As a french it's really funny to see you talk about dragon ball. In France we got it in order, and got Dragon ball as an anime in the 80s. It's so our experience is really alien to the american or australian experience.
Tien is still a badass in Z. He sacrificed himself to use his signature move dozens of times to fight off 2nd stage cell which is significant for a human.
The way Team Four Star does that in DBZA is fucking incredible too. Tien and Krillin got a ton of respect from me for knowing they were outclassed but still wanted to try and be better in case it ever fell to them.
Also what many People overlook is that he never got his potential unlocked by the Namekian Elder like Krillin did and he still managed to hold up, I've always wondered why they didn't bring that back up again to make him more relevant
Loved this conversation and just wanted to add a bit of info. Launch was just straight up forgotten as a character by Toriyama so he simply said she chased after Tien so the anime added some filler to imply that. Meanwhile we still don't know what really happened to her because when we do finally see what Tien is up to in Dragon Ball Super, we don't see Launch anywhere. The whole Yamcha is a cheater thing was never really confirmed besides an interview where Toriyama said so, while in the anime the only time it ever happened was in a filler episode where Yamcha was basically framed as a cheater by the villain of the episode. Bra is not only just a GT addition, she was introduced in the last chapters of the manga 10 years after Buu during the tournament where Goku flies off to train Uub. She also is a big plot point in Dragon Ball Super when we see Bulma pregnant. The editor also definitely had a pretty big hand in saving the series because the first 13 or so chapters that focus on the Dragon Balls and Emperor Pilaf were much more gag inspired and weren't all that popular. It was the editor who suggested switching the focus more to the martial arts aspect of the story. (Plus also as Liam mentions, the editor made Toriyama create new villains multiple times during the android saga) The series is continued during the 10 year gap between Buu and the end of the manga with Dragon Ball Super, which has both a manga and an anime although Toriyama just does designs and gives rough plot outlines. He's been much more involved in the movies and apparently the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima. GT takes place after the end of the manga andhad almost no involvement from Toriyama besides some designs and has no manga. They initially wanted to put it in the 10 years after Buu but Toriyama wanted to keep that open incase he ever came back to the series. (Which he did) The biggest reason Toriyama did come back originally with the movie Battle of Gods was because of Dragon Ball Evolution. The movie was so bad it inspired Toriyama to make a good movie. (Also the guy who plays Piccolo in Evolution comes back as a voice actor in Dragon Ball Super as one of the best villains) The comment about Vegeta's redemption arc was more about how Vegeta gets stuck on Earth and becomes an ally (mostly because Bulma finds him cute) before way before he ever actually has redemption. He never would've even stayed on Earth at all without Bulma housing him and feeding him and providing him training technology. His "redemption" doesn't really take form until he see Trunks die and then culminates when he blows himself up. Mr. Satan is simply named Hercule in translations because the name Satan was too bad for the Christian audiences of the West.
When it comes to names with R and L, it's very worth noting that Japanese has neither sound exactly in the English context. The hiragana らりるれろ are often romanized as "ra ei ru re ro" respectively, but the sound is somewhere between the English R and L. This leads to a lot of complexity/confusion when it comes to translations using names (a lot of old anime just used American names in their dub and thus avoided the issue, but these days, they're less worried about the audience going "ew it's not using American names"). Piccolo would have ended with the ろ ("ro") sound originally, so he could be "Picoro" or "Picolo" In the specific case of Toriyama, however, there's an easy solution to this problem. The vast majority of Toriyama's names are puns of some kind, and they tend to be themed. Gohan is Japanese for rice, for instance, and Saiyans are generally food based. (Kakarot, Goku's Saiyan name is Carrot, Vegeta is a Vegetable, Nappa is a type of cabbage, etc) King Piccolo's minions are all instruments: Ukulele, Piano, Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum, etc. So....Piccolo is probably meant to be an instrument too....which he is - a very high pitched woodwind instrument. There is, of course, room for argument that since their names are written in Japanese (and furthermore in hiragana and not katakana, which is a set of characters used to denote words of foreign origin - English loan words are particularly common given the last 80 years or so of history) they should be pronounced as they would be pronounced in Japan. You'd probably have to ask Toriyama himself which he'd prefer,
I don't really mind it in Piccolos case but I still can't get over the fact that the english Version is Luffy when the japanese clearly call him ruffy. They roll the "r" so it might sound a bit like "L" but it's still clearly ruffy if people would listen. For Piccolo I feel that they tend to go more towards the "L"
The Japanese “r” exists in English, but it’s what we call a “flap D” in linguistics. Say water, writer, rider, butter, etc. at full speed. You’re not saying t or d, your tongue is flicking against the alveolar ridge. That’s the Japanese r. The Japanese perception of what constitutes an “American” name only makes it worse. “Marvel Frozen? That’s an American name…” (Actual line from a Tomino anime.)

Japanese has no distinction between "r" and "l", sometimes it sounds more like an "l", sometimes more like an "r" depending on the accent and intonation of the person. Regarding Luffy, as far as I know, only in Germany he is stupidly called "Ruffy" because for some reason, the translator never bothered to read his name on his bounty poster written in Latin alphabet by Oda himself. My first introduction to DB was with DBZ. I had stayed the night at a friends house and we were watching toonami on Cartoon Network when an episode came on and it was in the middle of the Goku vs Frieza fight. At that point Goku was already a super saiyan and I had no idea what I was even watching but I enjoyed watching Goku beat the crap out of Frieza for a whole episode. Now you gotta remember this was the late 90’s so I had no internet or cable at home, I had no idea Goku even had black hair until I went to the library to use the computer and look up DBZ stuff. My first experience of the entire DBZ story was through a video game I played with my cousin on GameCube. Years later when streaming became available I finally watched the original DB as well as all of DBZ and GT and it’s amazing how so many fans have very different perspectives on the series depending on when and how they got introduced to it
I think Vegeta's first big step to redemption was while he was dying on Namek. He breaks down and tells Goku his history, and right after asks him to defeat Frieza for the Saiyans.
This was a super rad stream and fun collab wasn't expecting Liam to talk DB but still a dope time plus I'd recommend checking out GT for sure just for the fun of it 😅
Yamcha was like...completely faithful to Bulma. Like there is pretty much nothing in the entire story other than BULMA's word, the girl that said she was going to go find a better boyfriend simply because other girls liked him, to imply that he wasn't. Personality-wise he never displays any interest in anyone else besides Bulma throughout the series.
@binglybingler2598 Where's your source for "It's supposed to be real" in regards to Yamcha cheating on her? All we ever saw was Bulma loosing her mind that he got even the smallest attention from girls, it was never implied that he cheated, only that Bulma was so insecure she would blame Yamcha everytime a girl would flirt or even just express any sort of attention towards him. Now, i could be wrong, and have forgotten a specific manga panel or something. In that case, please point me in the right direction so i can re-read that specific part where it's implied he really did cheat one time.

Im fully prepared to admit im wrong, so i hope i don't come across as rude, but if it's as vague as you say im not convinced yet. People these days are way too fast and does too little research before making a judgement about whether someone is cheating or not, seen it way too many times irl as well.

it was crazy watching DragonBall z episodes out of context as a kid. There was this green alien people called God, the protagonist was also an alien?? There was this long implied history between the characters and this random guy who had a pig face. People shouted and turned blond. I loved it

Might as well clarify it here see Dragon ball GT is continuing the story as it was left off in the manga by Toei, there is no manga. Toriyama has no direct involvement in it he did some sketches for characters designs for it but ultimately was burn out of dragon ball. Dragon Ball super is where he got back into the Franchise after if I remember correctly he watch Dragon ball evolution and he didn’t wanted anyone else to interfere with his property. Some time later, Toei want to celebrate dragon ball anniversary with a movie tat being dragon ball z battle of gods, it was there and ask Toriyama to come start it and with his newfound Motivation Toriyama developed themovie script that help spark the return of dragon ball into popular consciousness. When ask to do a manga continuation of this, Toriyama declined for two reasons: he’s getting old and he lost his favorite pen. So he had himself someone who could do the art for him. Enter Toyotaro, a fan who's most famous at the time of making fan manga know of Dragon Ball AF, he emulate Toriyama style well enough that Toriyama ask him to do his art for the manga. Now we reach the very interesting part see dragon ball super is divide into three parts: the manga, the anime, and the movies. Each of them follow Toriyama storyboard of the story expect in different directions and execution. The anime doesn’t follow the first two Toriyama involves movies one to one and adapted it in a different way and neither does the manga but overall both are canon just different execution of Toriyama stories board of the arc.

I watched Totally not Mark's video on hxh and didn't like his review, most of the times the focus was only on the main characters ignoring every one else even if important in the plot and was too superficial on the plot
I grew up knowing of DBZ but never seen a ton of episodes and honestly i learned a lot about DBZ from the Team Four Star series - which is a fun watch!
It's interesting when liam talks about his jungled up experience watching DBZ. My experience is all over the place too. I never read the manga but I first saw random episodes of the Dragon Ball in Chinese dub whenever we visit my cousin and he had it playing. I was about 10 years old. Then in my high school years, I saw the english dub of Dragon Ball Z aired on TV with repeat episodes of the saiyan saga. It always ended before I got to see Goku fight Vegeta. It's not until 2018-2019 where I started to binge watch it from beginning OG to Z to GT then Super in Japanese dub.
This was a lot of fun and a great conversation. Yeah it's wild the impact Dragonball Z has had on the industry. It's so funny when people who just come across it now a lot of the time will say things like it's MID or whatever and compare it to things that grew because of the stuff that Dragonball pioneered lol. It's why I never list DBZ when I'm talking about my favorite anime/manga cause it holds such a special place in my heart, but there's a bunch of series I like more most of which built on the back of Dragonball (though my fave Berserk I don't think it borrowed too much).
I hate watching YT channels who discuss modern anime because most of them shit on DBZ for being MID or basic or too cliche. Like bro DBZ was the foundation or the mean around which other anime built upon. I love One piece and HunterxHunter but they would not exist today if they did not build on top of what Dragonball had built. Which is better, Iphone 15 or the first Iphone? Of course Iphone 15, but do not forget the revolutionary change the first Iphone brought and shit upon it.

@@godofthunder5485 I agree, the Dragonball manga is still very good even today, though the anime does have some pacing issues by modern standards. But it does not matter, if you grew up with DBZ you will always love it. I have rewatched DBZ like 10 times including all filler content and never get bored with it. That is hard for a lot of DBZ haters to digest when they mock the DBZ fandom, that it is possible for an anime to hold a special place in so many people's heart.
A couple things to point out about naming schemes in DBZ: Videl is easy to remember because it is an anagram of Devil, and she is the daughter of Mr Satan. Also Gohan actually named his daughter after Piccolo instead of sticking to the typical name for his family (both a piccolo and a pan are types of flutes).
Merphy if you get a chance I highly recommend watching the creator commentaries of the DragonBall z abridged! They're funny, insightful, abf really heartfelt.
All the post Z series have some Toriyama involvement, sometimes more limited sometimes less. As far as GT goes, it can be summarised a "The anime only series following DBZ. Most of the arcs have great underlying ideas that had some issues with execution."
The reason why Vegito became no-longer-Vegito was explained in Super. Only Kai beings can be perma-fused with the earrings. Mortals have a 30 minute limit.
Is normally 1 hour (even if in dbz the old kai told him that was permanent until explained later) and is reduced if the fusion is so powerful that the power sustaining the fusion gets used up. With Black was also pemanent and is explained with "it was the fusion of two of the same person"
It's still a retcon. Now the hour time limit is the reason but if you only watch dragon ball through to Z the explanation is the weird Magic within Super Buu causing the Potara to malfunction. Which I honestly prefer because Potara having the risk of perma fusion stops them from being abused narratively because now they are just risk free Fusion Dance, if only difficult to get a hold of but even then instant transmission to the supreme kai and borrowing them then instant transmitting back Is faster and less complicated than the dance.

I just spit out my water when I heard you said you read a fanfiction where Vegeta and Bulma had a baby name Bra, not knowing she is a real character, like omg this is the best part of the entire stream.
The thing with GT is that it technically could still fit in the timeline because it takes place so far in the future, albeit with inconsistencies. But it's also a largely disliked show where Toriyama only did a few designs and it was thrown together by Toei to keep the franchise together and it feels like it's basically not considered canon by anyone.
The reason “Super is canon aswell is, Akira rights the Story of Dragonball Super, but he didn’t wanna do the drawing of the manga so he chose Toyotarou to draw the manga, but the story of “super” itself is all Toriyama”…unlike Dragonball Gt which was mostly the Toie company that did that which is why its deemed non canon

In English there is some gunk that sticks because we have always said it that way. It's sai-an not say-an but we've always said it Say-an in English. Or it's Tenshinhan NOT Tienshinhan but we have always said it as Tien. Bra is Bulla, she was in the 2018 movie as a baby so she made it to canon! Next year's DB Daima is exploring Demons but we they get there in a space ship probably. So... fushion earings, that was retconned 7 years ago to only be permanent if one fushee is a kai. Toribot mostly writes outlines with major story beats, others fill it in and he goes over it and approves or makes changes.
One thing about Dragon Ball is that Toriyama didn't split DB into DBZ. That's something the anime did and manga outside Japan. There is a proper English release of the manga that has all of Dragon Ball as it should be without the split in 3-in-1 editions which I own. Thing about Super is that it is cannon but GT is not so it's ok to not know it and yes Bra shows up at the end before Goku takes Uub to train.
Also, pretty sure his name is Hercule Satan, and you know how Japan loves calling people by their family names... so the localizers switched it around to use his name. Also, Videl is an anagram of Devil so... yeah. She's great though. Wish they continued doing stuff with her.
I don't know if merphy knows this but there was a long period of time after our child hoods where Dragonball had ended and then it came back with battle of gods movie after the horrible live action and then we started this new age of dragonball where new series are being made again.
It's so interesting to see Merph perceiving Yamcha as a "serial cheater" when there have been almost no instances of Yamcha being explicitly shown cheating and only panels with Bulma describing Yamcha as a cheater. Knowing Bulma's tendency to blow things out of proportion and straight up make things up when it suits her as well as her tendency to play her sexuality up for her own gain, you just can't help it but wonder how trustworthy that narrative is. Dragon Ball isn't that deep, but its shallowness has so much capacity for taking simple matters deeply, like doubting exactly how trustworthy Bulma's narrative of Yamcha "cheating" and Yamcha's narrative of "totally having a girlfriend during Android Saga" are. It's one of those series that's got so much space for theories and speculation exactly because only the bare essentials are thoroughly explained with the rest being pushed out of the way as ✨Dragon Ball Magic✨
Iirc she thirsted over general Blue while still dating Yamcha, so if you were to ask me which one between the 2 was ever gonna cheat then... Lol. Hell, personally I don't doubt at least prior to Buu saga her and Vegeta weren't 100% about each other either. Also I think there's a line in Japanese og dragonball about both her parents having side pieces, but I'll have to double check that. Wouldn't surprise me though lol

Piccolo is like 3 to 5 years older than Gohan. Piccolo is the big brother. Gohan admires Piccolo, but is inspired by and respects Gokus position on the battlefield and place in his life.
Toriyama is basically like Toeis Walt Disney at this point, They show up once a year with a suitcase full of money begging for new character designs from Toriyama, Toriyama probably reaches into his drawer and pulls out a couple of characters and Toei makes a movie off of it

LIams experience with Dragon Ball Z is the same as mine. Watchin it in the mornings on Cheese TV, I always missed the end and then watching it Paytv at my grandparents house in the afternoons and all over the place having not seen the middle.
At the beginning I was like "oh good it's liam. He's good at bringing maturity out of people, plus Jay's not here so we might get to see adult Merphy today." But nah, she couldn't keep the rat in her at bay for longer than 10 minutes 😂😂🐀🐀
With Merphy having read Dragon Ball, probably the originator of modern Shonen and One Piece, I'd really like to see her read Naruto and Bleach, particularly Bleach.
Bra is in the manga, at the end of the series at the tournament where Goku flies off with Oob. I don't think she has any lines and only appears briefly so no wonder people forget about her and more remember her from GT. Lunch does not appear at the end of the manga, only in the anime. Toriyama originally planned for Lunch to be included but swapped her for No. 17 instead which explains why No. 17 says "It's been a while since I heard that voice" referring to Goku even though he has never met Goku before, the line was written for Lunch. Trunks specifically mentions No. 19 and No. 20. Toriyams's editors' comments went further as they were not satisfied with Cell so Toriyama made it so Cell can transform which must mean Cell was originally not supposed to transform. Then when he absorbered No. 17 they said now Cell looks like a moron. It seems they were happy with Cell's perfect form, even though the second form was Toriyama's favourite. Hercule comes form the FUNimation dub, his name has always been Mister Satan. Hercule was made up by FUNimation to avoid calling him Satan. FUNimation changed a lot of things, character names, attack names, pronunciations, etc. It's really annoying for me so I always stick with the Japanese version which is fine for the anime but for the manga there is only the Viz translation which is not as bad as the FUNimation dub but is still far from an accurate version.
We had weird rules in the industry in the late 90s to early 2000s. In The Big O, we weren’t allowed to use the word “god,” and in Outlaw Star, the word “kill” was verboten despite one of the leads being an assassin. Or everyone drinking “hot chocolate” or “tea” instead of coffee and sake in Tenchi and Sailor Moon.
@@CantankerousDave Wow I had no idea about coffee being changed, really weird. I remember in Dragon Ball in the English dub with Kami it's as though Kami is his name when it is actually his title meaning God in English. We never find out his real name other than being called the child of Katatsu. Yeah 90s and early 2000s dubs for anime were wild.

I respect that this conversation is sticking to the manga, but I _am_ disappointed that my favorite content probably won't come up: the DBZ filler, especially between the end of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber training and the Cell Games. Even if y'all don't check out any of the rest of the anime-original content, please consider checking that out.
I had a similarly weird timeline with the dragon ball manga. A friend had the first 4 volumes but the manga translation was up to volume 18. Since the newest volume was way easier to find I started reading at volume 18 while buying the earlier volumes when I found them. So volume 17 was the last I read.
My favorite moment is when that Short-Bald-Fake-Monk-Background-Character suddenly...SUDDENLY!!!...got one of the hottest gals of the lore- #18!!! Am still amazed at that..😂
(There's a mangaka recommendation below, Oshimi Shuzo) GT is considered to be not canon, but it exists in those funky Dragonball Heroes and Xenoverse thingies as some timey-wimey alternate universe/timeline stuff. Super is indeed canon and happens between the besting of Buu and the Goku vs. Oob Tournament. I'm getting a bit worried on how Toriyama and Toyotarou are handling that - since the Super Anime is the source for this era it seems, and the manga adapted the anime, until new arcs were manga exclusive... If they want to keep the vs. Oob "Finale" as it is, they'd need to take all the godly powers away from the characters or... They can incorporate it and make Oob into someone that will tap into godly realms, fitting, as the reincarnation of evil Buu, that was so much more powerful than the strongest waking being in the universe with Frieza (not created, not sealed away, not sleepy Beerus), someone who got another role added to him later... You might get there. I'm not much of a book reader anymore, only reading Murtagh now because I'm loyal to the World of Eragon. So, basically only manga. So it's a delight to see you getting umm. Nudged by your community to those big manga stories! Can't wait to see where it'll go. And if you'll get your toes into stories away from (battle) shounen manga. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Do you like it darker, unsettling from a totally non-supernatural angle stories? Oshimi Shūzō might be someone interesting for you. - Aku no Hana / The Flowers of Evil, containing inspiration from Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. A... psychological but not edgy teen drama story. - then we have Chi no Wadachi / Blood on the Tracks. It hit me hard over a long time. Could have been a normal slice of life and/or coming of age story, but... You see, the MC has a mother. And I'm not sure if this story will catch you or make you very, very angry, since you have your stances when it comes to how family, blood-related or found, should treat each other. It ended this year. It was an outstanding work to me, and the art and how the characters act... it was unnervingly close to reality. Your community might have already recommended it to you, or decided against it because they know you better. Funfact: The anime adaptation of Aku no Hana got stomped online for the Rotoscopy approach - something Shuzo himself said was exactly how he envisioned an adaptation if I remember correctly. Then he drew Chi no Wadachi, and it looks so real. As if to spite all those who didn't like their animay characters looking like real animay characters during the Aku no Hana anime time.

Launch was just straight up forgotten as a character by Toriyama so he simply said she chased after Tien so the anime added some filler to imply that. Meanwhile we still don't know what really happened to her because when we do finally see what Tien is up to in Dragon Ball Super, we don't see Launch anywhere.
The whole Yamcha is a cheater thing was never really confirmed besides an interview where Toriyama said so, while in the anime the only time it ever happened was in a filler episode where Yamcha was basically framed as a cheater by the villain of the episode.
Bra is not only just a GT addition, she was introduced in the last chapters of the manga 10 years after Buu during the tournament where Goku flies off to train Uub. She also is a big plot point in Dragon Ball Super when we see Bulma pregnant.
The editor also definitely had a pretty big hand in saving the series because the first 13 or so chapters that focus on the Dragon Balls and Emperor Pilaf were much more gag inspired and weren't all that popular. It was the editor who suggested switching the focus more to the martial arts aspect of the story. (Plus also as Liam mentions, the editor made Toriyama create new villains multiple times during the android saga)
The series is continued during the 10 year gap between Buu and the end of the manga with Dragon Ball Super, which has both a manga and an anime although Toriyama just does designs and gives rough plot outlines. He's been much more involved in the movies and apparently the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima. GT takes place after the end of the manga andhad almost no involvement from Toriyama besides some designs and has no manga. They initially wanted to put it in the 10 years after Buu but Toriyama wanted to keep that open incase he ever came back to the series. (Which he did)
The biggest reason Toriyama did come back originally with the movie Battle of Gods was because of Dragon Ball Evolution. The movie was so bad it inspired Toriyama to make a good movie. (Also the guy who plays Piccolo in Evolution comes back as a voice actor in Dragon Ball Super as one of the best villains)
The comment about Vegeta's redemption arc was more about how Vegeta gets stuck on Earth and becomes an ally (mostly because Bulma finds him cute) before way before he ever actually has redemption. He never would've even stayed on Earth at all without Bulma housing him and feeding him and providing him training technology. His "redemption" doesn't really take form until he see Trunks die and then culminates when he blows himself up.
Mr. Satan is simply named Hercule in translations because the name Satan was too bad for the Christian audiences of the West.
When it comes to names with R and L, it's very worth noting that Japanese has neither sound exactly in the English context. The hiragana らりるれろ are often romanized as "ra ei ru re ro" respectively, but the sound is somewhere between the English R and L. This leads to a lot of complexity/confusion when it comes to translations using names (a lot of old anime just used American names in their dub and thus avoided the issue, but these days, they're less worried about the audience going "ew it's not using American names"). Piccolo would have ended with the ろ ("ro") sound originally, so he could be "Picoro" or "Picolo"
In the specific case of Toriyama, however, there's an easy solution to this problem. The vast majority of Toriyama's names are puns of some kind, and they tend to be themed. Gohan is Japanese for rice, for instance, and Saiyans are generally food based. (Kakarot, Goku's Saiyan name is Carrot, Vegeta is a Vegetable, Nappa is a type of cabbage, etc) King Piccolo's minions are all instruments: Ukulele, Piano, Tambourine, Cymbal, Drum, etc. So....Piccolo is probably meant to be an instrument too....which he is - a very high pitched woodwind instrument.
There is, of course, room for argument that since their names are written in Japanese (and furthermore in hiragana and not katakana, which is a set of characters used to denote words of foreign origin - English loan words are particularly common given the last 80 years or so of history) they should be pronounced as they would be pronounced in Japan. You'd probably have to ask Toriyama himself which he'd prefer,
I don't really mind it in Piccolos case but I still can't get over the fact that the english Version is Luffy when the japanese clearly call him ruffy. They roll the "r" so it might sound a bit like "L" but it's still clearly ruffy if people would listen. For Piccolo I feel that they tend to go more towards the "L"
The Japanese “r” exists in English, but it’s what we call a “flap D” in linguistics. Say water, writer, rider, butter, etc. at full speed. You’re not saying t or d, your tongue is flicking against the alveolar ridge. That’s the Japanese r.
The Japanese perception of what constitutes an “American” name only makes it worse. “Marvel Frozen? That’s an American name…” (Actual line from a Tomino anime.)

My first introduction to DB was with DBZ. I had stayed the night at a friends house and we were watching toonami on Cartoon Network when an episode came on and it was in the middle of the Goku vs Frieza fight. At that point Goku was already a super saiyan and I had no idea what I was even watching but I enjoyed watching Goku beat the crap out of Frieza for a whole episode. Now you gotta remember this was the late 90’s so I had no internet or cable at home, I had no idea Goku even had black hair until I went to the library to use the computer and look up DBZ stuff. My first experience of the entire DBZ story was through a video game I played with my cousin on GameCube. Years later when streaming became available I finally watched the original DB as well as all of DBZ and GT and it’s amazing how so many fans have very different perspectives on the series depending on when and how they got introduced to it
I think Vegeta's first big step to redemption was while he was dying on Namek. He breaks down and tells Goku his history, and right after asks him to defeat Frieza for the Saiyans.

Yamcha was like...completely faithful to Bulma. Like there is pretty much nothing in the entire story other than BULMA's word, the girl that said she was going to go find a better boyfriend simply because other girls liked him, to imply that he wasn't. Personality-wise he never displays any interest in anyone else besides Bulma throughout the series.

All we ever saw was Bulma loosing her mind that he got even the smallest attention from girls, it was never implied that he cheated, only that Bulma was so insecure she would blame Yamcha everytime a girl would flirt or even just express any sort of attention towards him.
Now, i could be wrong, and have forgotten a specific manga panel or something. In that case, please point me in the right direction so i can re-read that specific part where it's implied he really did cheat one time.

Might as well clarify it here see Dragon ball GT is continuing the story as it was left off in the manga by Toei, there is no manga. Toriyama has no direct involvement in it he did some sketches for characters designs for it but ultimately was burn out of dragon ball.
Dragon Ball super is where he got back into the Franchise after if I remember correctly he watch Dragon ball evolution and he didn’t wanted anyone else to interfere with his property. Some time later, Toei want to celebrate dragon ball anniversary with a movie tat being dragon ball z battle of gods, it was there and ask Toriyama to come start it and with his newfound Motivation Toriyama developed themovie script that help spark the return of dragon ball into popular consciousness. When ask to do a manga continuation of this, Toriyama declined for two reasons: he’s getting old and he lost his favorite pen. So he had himself someone who could do the art for him. Enter Toyotaro, a fan who's most famous at the time of making fan manga know of Dragon Ball AF, he emulate Toriyama style well enough that Toriyama ask him to do his art for the manga. Now we reach the very interesting part see dragon ball super is divide into three parts: the manga, the anime, and the movies. Each of them follow Toriyama storyboard of the story expect in different directions and execution. The anime doesn’t follow the first two Toriyama involves movies one to one and adapted it in a different way and neither does the manga but overall both are canon just different execution of Toriyama stories board of the arc.

It's interesting when liam talks about his jungled up experience watching DBZ. My experience is all over the place too. I never read the manga but I first saw random episodes of the Dragon Ball in Chinese dub whenever we visit my cousin and he had it playing. I was about 10 years old. Then in my high school years, I saw the english dub of Dragon Ball Z aired on TV with repeat episodes of the saiyan saga. It always ended before I got to see Goku fight Vegeta. It's not until 2018-2019 where I started to binge watch it from beginning OG to Z to GT then Super in Japanese dub.

This was a lot of fun and a great conversation. Yeah it's wild the impact Dragonball Z has had on the industry. It's so funny when people who just come across it now a lot of the time will say things like it's MID or whatever and compare it to things that grew because of the stuff that Dragonball pioneered lol. It's why I never list DBZ when I'm talking about my favorite anime/manga cause it holds such a special place in my heart, but there's a bunch of series I like more most of which built on the back of Dragonball (though my fave Berserk I don't think it borrowed too much).
I hate watching YT channels who discuss modern anime because most of them shit on DBZ for being MID or basic or too cliche. Like bro DBZ was the foundation or the mean around which other anime built upon. I love One piece and HunterxHunter but they would not exist today if they did not build on top of what Dragonball had built.

@@godofthunder5485 I agree, the Dragonball manga is still very good even today, though the anime does have some pacing issues by modern standards. But it does not matter, if you grew up with DBZ you will always love it. I have rewatched DBZ like 10 times including all filler content and never get bored with it. That is hard for a lot of DBZ haters to digest when they mock the DBZ fandom, that it is possible for an anime to hold a special place in so many people's heart.
A couple things to point out about naming schemes in DBZ: Videl is easy to remember because it is an anagram of Devil, and she is the daughter of Mr Satan.
Also Gohan actually named his daughter after Piccolo instead of sticking to the typical name for his family (both a piccolo and a pan are types of flutes).

All the post Z series have some Toriyama involvement, sometimes more limited sometimes less. As far as GT goes, it can be summarised a "The anime only series following DBZ. Most of the arcs have great underlying ideas that had some issues with execution."
The reason why Vegito became no-longer-Vegito was explained in Super. Only Kai beings can be perma-fused with the earrings. Mortals have a 30 minute limit.
Is normally 1 hour (even if in dbz the old kai told him that was permanent until explained later) and is reduced if the fusion is so powerful that the power sustaining the fusion gets used up. With Black was also pemanent and is explained with "it was the fusion of two of the same person"
It's still a retcon. Now the hour time limit is the reason but if you only watch dragon ball through to Z the explanation is the weird Magic within Super Buu causing the Potara to malfunction.
Which I honestly prefer because Potara having the risk of perma fusion stops them from being abused narratively because now they are just risk free Fusion Dance, if only difficult to get a hold of but even then instant transmission to the supreme kai and borrowing them then instant transmitting back Is faster and less complicated than the dance.

Goku was always my favorite, and I never understood why people love Vegeta so much, but I enjoyed this chat.
The thing with GT is that it technically could still fit in the timeline because it takes place so far in the future, albeit with inconsistencies. But it's also a largely disliked show where Toriyama only did a few designs and it was thrown together by Toei to keep the franchise together and it feels like it's basically not considered canon by anyone.
Even Toriyama himself said it’s considered a side story but I always liked to think of it as canon even though I know it’s technically not. 🤷♂️

In English there is some gunk that sticks because we have always said it that way. It's sai-an not say-an but we've always said it Say-an in English. Or it's Tenshinhan NOT Tienshinhan but we have always said it as Tien. Bra is Bulla, she was in the 2018 movie as a baby so she made it to canon!
Next year's DB Daima is exploring Demons but we they get there in a space ship probably.

Toribot mostly writes outlines with major story beats, others fill it in and he goes over it and approves or makes changes.
One thing about Dragon Ball is that Toriyama didn't split DB into DBZ. That's something the anime did and manga outside Japan. There is a proper English release of the manga that has all of Dragon Ball as it should be without the split in 3-in-1 editions which I own. Thing about Super is that it is cannon but GT is not so it's ok to not know it and yes Bra shows up at the end before Goku takes Uub to train.
Toriyama also designed the characters from one of the best video games of all time: Chrono Trigger.
Dragon Ball has amazing references to the journey to the west.

I don't know if merphy knows this but there was a long period of time after our child hoods where Dragonball had ended and then it came back with battle of gods movie after the horrible live action and then we started this new age of dragonball where new series are being made again.
It's so interesting to see Merph perceiving Yamcha as a "serial cheater" when there have been almost no instances of Yamcha being explicitly shown cheating and only panels with Bulma describing Yamcha as a cheater. Knowing Bulma's tendency to blow things out of proportion and straight up make things up when it suits her as well as her tendency to play her sexuality up for her own gain, you just can't help it but wonder how trustworthy that narrative is. Dragon Ball isn't that deep, but its shallowness has so much capacity for taking simple matters deeply, like doubting exactly how trustworthy Bulma's narrative of Yamcha "cheating" and Yamcha's narrative of "totally having a girlfriend during Android Saga" are. It's one of those series that's got so much space for theories and speculation exactly because only the bare essentials are thoroughly explained with the rest being pushed out of the way as ✨Dragon Ball Magic✨
Iirc she thirsted over general Blue while still dating Yamcha, so if you were to ask me which one between the 2 was ever gonna cheat then... Lol. Hell, personally I don't doubt at least prior to Buu saga her and Vegeta weren't 100% about each other either.
Also I think there's a line in Japanese og dragonball about both her parents having side pieces, but I'll have to double check that. Wouldn't surprise me though lol

Lunch does not appear at the end of the manga, only in the anime. Toriyama originally planned for Lunch to be included but swapped her for No. 17 instead which explains why No. 17 says "It's been a while since I heard that voice" referring to Goku even though he has never met Goku before, the line was written for Lunch.
Trunks specifically mentions No. 19 and No. 20. Toriyams's editors' comments went further as they were not satisfied with Cell so Toriyama made it so Cell can transform which must mean Cell was originally not supposed to transform. Then when he absorbered No. 17 they said now Cell looks like a moron. It seems they were happy with Cell's perfect form, even though the second form was Toriyama's favourite.
Hercule comes form the FUNimation dub, his name has always been Mister Satan. Hercule was made up by FUNimation to avoid calling him Satan.
FUNimation changed a lot of things, character names, attack names, pronunciations, etc. It's really annoying for me so I always stick with the Japanese version which is fine for the anime but for the manga there is only the Viz translation which is not as bad as the FUNimation dub but is still far from an accurate version.
We had weird rules in the industry in the late 90s to early 2000s. In The Big O, we weren’t allowed to use the word “god,” and in Outlaw Star, the word “kill” was verboten despite one of the leads being an assassin. Or everyone drinking “hot chocolate” or “tea” instead of coffee and sake in Tenchi and Sailor Moon.

I remember in Dragon Ball in the English dub with Kami it's as though Kami is his name when it is actually his title meaning God in English. We never find out his real name other than being called the child of Katatsu. Yeah 90s and early 2000s dubs for anime were wild.

I had a similarly weird timeline with the dragon ball manga. A friend had the first 4 volumes but the manga translation was up to volume 18. Since the newest volume was way easier to find I started reading at volume 18 while buying the earlier volumes when I found them. So volume 17 was the last I read.
When it comes to what's shown in the manga, Bulma was always the one with the really roaming eyes.
GT is only half bad. Baby and the dragons are awesome. And SSJ4 is the best transformation in all of dragon ball. I have spoken.
My favorite moment is when that Short-Bald-Fake-Monk-Background-Character suddenly...SUDDENLY!!!...got one of the hottest gals of the lore- #18!!!

GT is considered to be not canon, but it exists in those funky Dragonball Heroes and Xenoverse thingies as some timey-wimey alternate universe/timeline stuff.
Super is indeed canon and happens between the besting of Buu and the Goku vs. Oob Tournament.
I'm getting a bit worried on how Toriyama and Toyotarou are handling that - since the Super Anime is the source for this era it seems, and the manga adapted the anime, until new arcs were manga exclusive...
If they want to keep the vs. Oob "Finale" as it is, they'd need to take all the godly powers away from the characters or... They can incorporate it and make Oob into someone that will tap into godly realms, fitting, as the reincarnation of evil Buu, that was so much more powerful than the strongest waking being in the universe with Frieza (not created, not sealed away, not sleepy Beerus), someone who got another role added to him later... You might get there.
I'm not much of a book reader anymore, only reading Murtagh now because I'm loyal to the World of Eragon. So, basically only manga.
So it's a delight to see you getting umm. Nudged by your community to those big manga stories! Can't wait to see where it'll go. And if you'll get your toes into stories away from (battle) shounen manga.

- Aku no Hana / The Flowers of Evil, containing inspiration from Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal. A... psychological but not edgy teen drama story.
- then we have Chi no Wadachi / Blood on the Tracks.
It hit me hard over a long time. Could have been a normal slice of life and/or coming of age story, but... You see, the MC has a mother. And I'm not sure if this story will catch you or make you very, very angry, since you have your stances when it comes to how family, blood-related or found, should treat each other. It ended this year. It was an outstanding work to me, and the art and how the characters act... it was unnervingly close to reality. Your community might have already recommended it to you, or decided against it because they know you better.
Funfact: The anime adaptation of Aku no Hana got stomped online for the Rotoscopy approach - something Shuzo himself said was exactly how he envisioned an adaptation if I remember correctly.
Then he drew Chi no Wadachi, and it looks so real. As if to spite all those who didn't like their animay characters looking like real animay characters during the Aku no Hana anime time.
