Apparently in the UK, in their fish and chip shops they serve a brown liquid and it is supposed to replicate the taste of vinegar. Cheaper than real vinegar, they have to dilute it before they give it to customers.
Love those kinda chips, fluffy and crunchy. Beat fries every time. This looks nearer to normal UK fish & chips than all the videos i've seen from America. The only notable difference is the fish shape.
In England you get a whole side of cod, that looks like what we call mini fish and chips which is usually a cheaper white fish like Pollock. Apart from that it looks exactly right. And vinegar... tartar is quite vinegary.
Greg do a crowd fund, come over to the UK and sample fish & chips across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, a couple of stops to the most popular chippys in each country, that'd be fantastic!

I'm a Brit living in Australia for 9 years and I was up in Queensland this weekend, and had to try Chumley Warner's British Fish and Chips in Birkdale. I have to say, it's the first time I've found British style fish and chips here, and I gave it a 10/10 score. I had a battered sausage and chips with curry sauce, and even the pork sausage was exactly like you'd expect in the UK. I think it's hard to find this style of fish and chips in Australia because the Aussies grew up with more crunchy chips fresh out of the fryer, where as the UK style is all about the steaming process inside the paper, has some crunch but they tend to be kind of soggy. Drenched in vinegar with a generous sprinkle of salt, not lemon juice and definitely not chicken salt. The batter also needs to stay in one piece and gripping the fish, which requires a thicker batter. Here in Australia, the batter tends to crumble and fall off. So although I like fish and chips here, it's not the real thing for me at heart :)
That looks legit. Can't imagine chips without salt and vinegar. And I spotted pickled onions and eggs behind the counter. Your other Aussie fish and chip reviews look great too, but they look more like clean-cut french fries rather than fat English greasy chips. Grego you've done well. All that's missing is curry sauce, but that's a contentious issue.
Most fish and chips places here in the USA serve lemon slices, vinegar and salt; naturally. Here, the fish used to be halibut (I think the best) but now serve cod; usually.
Really glad you found some authentic fish and chips, I have to say they did look amazing. If you wanted mushy peas then you have to order them separately. But if you want to find the worlds best, please get to Tenby in South Wales, UK. They have some of the most incredible food. Love the channel and much respect.

In _"Prisoner Cell Block H"_ on old TV _"Vinegar Tits"_ was the nickname of a warden. In an ideal world, I wouldn't have had the batter quite like that, as a personal preference. Those beer-batters like you get in Suffolk are light crispy with sort of airbubbles. Looks like a good fish and chips you have there though. I like chips like that on the rare occasion I have them.

Proper chip shop vinegar isn't vinegar at all. It's non-brewed condiment. You can tell because it doesn't smell as strong as malt vinegar. That fish is still only half the size of the ones you get in Haydon Bridge, Northumberland. As for mushy peas. That's what soft Southerners from places like Yorkshire eat. :-) More likely to get a pickled egg up here in the North.
Hi there if from Scotland if u could tell me ur favourite chip shop near mermaid waters as I’m over there at Christmas would really appreciate it cheers Jamie
Lol! Nice one! Any curry sauce. ? Love the Gordon Bennet. But to my horror is also an Aussie artist. Or as we call them over here ...painter and decorator. ;
@@GregsKitchen Curry sauce is fantastic with fish n chips. It's a hot curry sauce (as in temperature hot) that comes in a small carton that you then pour over the fish n chips, lovely.
The secret to the chips is they use a kind of bleach called drywite (it’s not bleach, but it’s some kind of chemical) which stops the outside colouring when they fry them. So they can fry them until the middles are soft, without the outside getting dark brown.
Hi Gregg I’m from Birmingham England and those chips look exactly like the ones at my local chippy I’d just suggest you have more vinegar yum yum oh and mushy peas xx
Could be that the vinegar had a light taste because most chippies actually use a non brewed condiment (acetic acid I think) instead of 'real' vinegar. It has a very particular but mild taste. I tend to have some at home because I prefer it to malt vinegar on chips.
It depends what you compare. Either can be bad or good. Theres some really crap chip shops in the UK and I'm sure theres some really crap ones in aus I'm sure. Vice versa theres some good ones in aus and the uk.
