This is a very simple project to do but will be a great addition to my camping portfolio.
The ability to travel, park and sleep comfortably in a car anywhere is a big advantage.
I hope you enjoy this video and it gives you some ideas. You can probably create your own simple car micro camper and do an even better job than I did for not a lot of money.
In total my Micro Camper conversion cost me around £120 Cheap cheap cheap and very practical

So basically, instead of a "Tiny House", you have created a luxurious "Tiny Tent" - perfect! 😊

I shall try it out tonight Dan, and the wife wants to try it tomorrow. Not enough room for two so if the wife wnats to come on my journeys she and the dog will stay in the car and I'll pitch a tent next door

Excellent! Well done. If length ends up being a bit tight, you could move the cook station to the drivers seat when you park up and alter the sleeping base to allow you to sleep diagonally to gain a few extra inches.

I think that Micro Camper project came out really well! Quick and easy conversion and a great Base Camp to be used as a jumping off point for much deeper adventures which you can stock pile up some reserves to resupply to continue on. Great job! My Grandfather had converted a few vehicles over the years when I was young and we did many adventures using a similar setup.

Great job Sandy. I have done a bit of this in the past, once for a month in my own vehicle, doing just what you're planning to - create a mobile base for your outings. I found a few things out.
    1) If police or others see those silver blinds, they know you're in there 'camping', and will harass you to leave. A lot of places in the US frown upon this, which is ridiculous, but it happens. I found that painting the side facing the exterior flat black made my windows look 'blacked out' and drew less attention.
    2) Even if it were an Overlanding trip, where all exploration is done by 4x4, I took along a rucksack with all essentials to 'walk it out' in case of vehicular break-down - canteens, sleeping kit, food, etc, just like you normally would have. Yes, you should 'normally' stick with the vehicle, but in some cases if you are in an area where there isn't much traffic, you might have to still consider walking out of there for help. Keep your cell on charge all the time in the vehicle too as coverage might be spotty, or none at all in which case your cell could run dead pinging like mad to try to find a tower.
    3) For warmer months, create some mosquito/midge screens for a couple of your windows for ventilation. I found that if I made them to fit between the top of the frame, and the top of the window, I could roll up the window slowly and get a tight fit there. That way you can also make them whatever height you wish as well, if you only want to vent a few inches from the top, you just make them as wide as your window, and a few inches tall, and roll the window up to tighten. This also keeps people from just breaking through your screen and opening your vehicle (security). These will also help with condensation in winter months if you choose to do this at that time as well.
    4) Took a military sleeping bag with me and a couple of wool blankets. Cars are really not insulated for living in, so you might get a bit colder.
    5) A way to keep your perishable food cool is essential. For longer trips, and if you are going to be doing this often, I suggest an electric unit, and a dual battery setup. I would look at the National Luna kit out of South Africa, they're solid.
Ok I have given 3 cents more than my alotted 2, I hope you don't mind.
All the best, and have a good time :-)

Cool tips there Nicholas. I will try painting the silver dark and see if it works. Food provisions will be purchased frequently and also cans will stay fresh for months. I think all will be good

Thanks for a fun little video Sandy, I have made over many vans, pick up trucks, and station wagons over the last 50 plus years, my first was a 1961 Ford Econoline back in 1967, the most fun was a 1981 Datsun king cab pickup 5 speed diesel 55 miles to the gallon I still have it in the yard, I have had maybe 20 over the years some were motorhomes and full van conversions, but the most fun were the ones I put together myself, I ran them from White Horse in Yukon and Yellowknife in the northwest territories into Mexico and most places in between, today I run a 2001 Honda Odyssey. now you can get out on the open road and make us so great road videos with your new setup!

Hey fantastic stuff Sandy! I did the same with my Skoda, I use it for fishing trips.. a couple of things I did Sandy was to get some of those wind/rain deflectors that got on the windows so you can have the windows cranked down slightly at night to aid ventilation without rain/wind getting in. I also string a bit of cord accross the middle of the car between the front passenger and drivers grab handle. I can then just throw a blanket etc o we it to provide privacy from the front. Looks awesome already looking forward to seeing your adventures.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thats a good idea John on the rain/ window deflectors. I'm going to try sleeping in it tonight and tomorrow the wife will give it a try. Whoever sleeps in the car gets to sleep with the dog. Not enough space for two people but it's cost me next to nothing so I can't complain.

What a fantastic setup! I love the cabinet for all your cooking/washing up gear. I have a Peugeot 306 hatch that I have slept in the back of a few times (I always throw a basic camping setup in the back of the car when heading to festivals etc). Bit of a pinch, but one of the plus points of being 5ft 2. I think I will make one of those cabinets so that Mr M and I can have very civilised picnics when the weather improves. The Polish army bed roll is very tempting too! Happy travels in Wiltshire Man's Mobile Metal Tent.

Thumbs up for this inspiring video! This is unquestionably the most practical and efficient, yet elegant solutions for a small car / camper conversion I've seen on the internet. It is often said that the best solutions are the simplest - and from what I've seen here, I can tell you are a man who thinks things through and then proceeds to execute your brilliant ideas with relish, adjusting and improvising as you realize each component. I'm an American, and must confess that simply watching the application of your often humorous intelligence moved me to point of getting a little misty-eyed. I am not alone in the universal recognition of simple and effective ingenuity!

Great video Sandy. I've spent a few nights car camping in the back of my old VW Passat Estate. I didn't have a level bed like that. You've inspired me to rig something like this up. The biggest problem I found was inadequate ventilation. Modern cars are pretty much completely sealed. It gets all very misted up and damp with everything closed. If you crack all the windows an inch that's fine, but then the rain comes in. There is a solution available for the VW T5 van that cracks the tailgate open an inch and a half. if the wind isn't too bad/in the right direction, that stays rainproof apparently. I'm gonna try and engineer that for mine.

Excellent little RV ya got there. For hand washing etc there is a clear plastic rectangular container in 2 sizes with a large fill cap and little spigot that will stay running when you open it. Made for lemonade etc for large home gatherings is great for camping. Also, for window screen, you can get a roll, cut in oversized and attach them to the outside of vehicle windows with magnets. Leaves you the ability to roll up windows if rain comes during the night. Those rug- mats are a great idea. Enjoy!

i lived in a car for nearly 2 years and really enjoyed the way of life
you could sell those cooking stove cupboards
but when you compare car camping to wild camping etc eg people accept wild camping as a thing etc but people dont accept car camping so much but by comparing the two it does make car camping seem luxurios in conparrison

I thought my Kia Sorento would be a simple fit with fishing bed but soon found it left little room (out of a bare 36") and an uneven floor re-introduced my housemaid knee complain (1st fitting 6'2" Electrician) .
