How Did Animals Spread Around the World After Noah's Flood? - Dr. Kurt Wise

- After the Flood, animals leaving Noah's Ark were tasked with spreading out, multiplying, and repopulating a barren earth. Since the Ark landed somewhere in the Middle East, areas like Africa, Asia, and Europe were easy to get to. But how did animals spread to far off places like the Americas and Australia? In this presentation, paleontologist Dr. Kurt Wise discusses one idea called the rafting hypothesis.
𝘐𝘴 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺? is a documentary series that reveals how science intersects with the Bible. In over a hundred videos, scientists and scholars explore the evidence for creation in six normal days, a real Adam and Eve, a global Flood, a tower of Babel, plus hundreds of other fascinating aspects of God’s creation. Dr. Del Tackett serves as your guide in this amazing series that has impacted millions of people worldwide.

It is really cool how nature (Mt St Helens) and modern technology is showing that old believes/theories didn't quite get it right but shows that the Bible is. Praise Jesus.
It’s easy God provided a way and put them where they needed to be. It’s not too hard to figure out.
God did bring the animals to the ark, so taking them back, or to a new locale sounds feasible.
Sure but we're looking at how exactly that occurred.
Kurt is proposing a theory here on the actual logistics, and it's pretty interesting.
Replace the word "god" with any fantasy character of your choice and the statement is still exactly as valid as the original. Since there is no evidence of the participation of any god in the process, then we can claim that any imagined entity could do it.

Dr. Kurt, I love your videos. I love your passion. Thank you, sir, for being submissive to the Lord!
You mean obedient.
Wise is a geologist, not a biologist.
@davidgardner863 Actually, Dr. Wise is a paleontologist by training, which means his expertise spans both geology and biology. Paleontology is an interdisciplinary field that involves understanding the fossil record, which requires a strong foundation in geology (to study rock layers) and biology (to study the organisms those fossils represent). While Dr. Wise's formal academic background might emphasize geology, paleontology inherently involves biological knowledge as well, especially when studying the history of life on Earth.
@@IsGenesisHistory If that is true then why does he get so much of both geology and biology so wrong?
@@samburns3329 Because he NEEDS to get it wrong in order to support his belief. He only got his degree so that he can have the credential and sound like he has "scientific" explanations. Even though there is NOTHING about the Great Flood that makes ANY sense AT ALL with regard to the natural world.
In the flood, wouldn't the saltwater oceans have merged with any fresh water lakes there were in the world, making everything saltwater?
That's an error of steady state logic, which assumes things work the same now as they did "back then", whenever that was.
The antediluvian ocean may not have been so salty as it is today. Maybe a creation geologist could take that up as a subject to examine in depth.
@@PatrickKQ4HBD 🤣🤣 You mean they could fabricate an imaginary narrative that contradicts how things work in the real world and is only believable to someone who is emotionally attached to believing it.
@@PatrickKQ4HBD In the short time since reading your interesting comment, I have been looking into the salt levels in the oceans and it seems that subtropical areas of the Pacific Ocean are becoming fresher, while subtropical areas of the Atlantic are becoming saltier. There difference in salinity between the two oceans has increased 6% in just the last 50 years. This certainly suggests these levels could have changed dramatically in the time since the flood. There is a lot that scientists still do not understand about the salt in the oceans. One of their big questions is why they are not saltier than they are, because they assume huge stretches of time for geological salt deposits into the oceans. If Genesis is actually history, their assumptions for how old the earth is may be far too long.
We don't know if the waters from the deep were salt or fresh water. And the rains would not be salty. Besides, if God speaks, something is now there. He speaks again and it is not. Cool
Such an endlessly fascinating topic. I calculated once that a single mating pair of domestic cats could spread across the world in just 100 years.
Spread across world in 100 years, living off what? If a cat needs a mouse a day for its survival, how much faster must the mice breed to keep up? Your calculations seems to forget a couple of factors...
Press X to doubt.
Thank you, Dr. Wise! This was a question I had sometimes wondered about, & this theory makes a lot of sense. Dr. Wise is my top favorite of the scientists on the Is Genesis History films. It gives me the opportunity to continue learning about the wonders of God's creation!
This doesn't explain the many symbiotic relationships seen in the natural world. Monarch butterfly caterpillars for example feed exclusively on the milkweed plant. Somehow milkweed plants and monarch butterflies just by luck _happened_ to drift to the same parts of the world. Hmmm.....🤔
Milkweed plants all over the world belong to the same family. Similar phenotypes are based on epigenetic regulation. Evolution believers call this convergent evolution. For true scientists, they can be called convergent epigenetic adaptations.

My question has been when the critters left the ark and where green to roam.....what did the predators eat???
Sry spelling. Cannot edit.
My biggest question about this theory is what did the animals eat while adrift at sea for weeks?
Genesis 6:21: "And as for you, take for yourself every sort of food that is eaten; and you must gather it to yourself, and it must serve as food for you and for them."
I'm assuming the "for them" is the animals. So whatever noah eat, so did the animals, just gotta figure out what noah and his family would've eaten during that time period and that maybe the answer.
@@DarrylSteele69 That answers what they ate on the ark, but I'm talking about after they dispersed from the ark and got onto these ocean-spanning log mats which couldn't provide any vegetation for them.
@@danielwilliams7161 Nothing. They ate nothing. Because there was nothing to eat. God just did the whole thing by snapping his fingers and invoking magic. He created purpose-built magical animals who can survive on nothing just so he could get this job done.

Luckiky we see science in a broad spectrum of expertise conform the Bible and the ecisrance of our Lord. I hope you do the research ajd find God in your life. He is not far away ❤
Biggest issue I see with this hypothesis is that you are assuming that the ocean currents immediately after the flood were operating in anything like the current order we see today. How long did these currents take to stabilize after the flood?
Doesn't need to happen soon afterwards, does it?
They stabilized literally instantaneously. God stabilized them the same way he did any of this. He just snapped his fingers and got it done. Literally NOTHING about the "Great Flood" can be explained by ANY rational naturalistic process. Nothing. At all.
I wondered how the giant Rhea got to New Zealand. Must have wandered from Mt Ararat across the N African deserts to Senegal, jumped onto a log to cross the Atlantic to N America, wandered down to Peru, jumped onto another log to cross the Pacific to it's destination. Fantastic achievement with such limited resources👏
I've read that freshwater fish can slowly be acclimated to saltwater. The reverse is probably true as well. In any case, this might be worth looking into.
We must not forget the mini ice age after the flood lowered the sea levels to give land bridges between land groups. If you add that to floating masses it gives good animal movement for dispersal.
I still dont get it. If Kangaroos got to Australia on a log mat from another continent, then why is that the only place they exist?
Even though we have supposedly explored billions of miles of space, why is Life only found on earth? 🤔
GOD'S WILL BE DONE ✔
I'm sure these are all probable. The other idea is that the continents were still basically joined immediately post flood & speedily moved, to then come to the near stop as today.
No, they have mapped the mid Atlantic ridge, we know how fast the continents are moving now and in the past. Facts not myths.
After the flood was an ice age due to warm waters from the deep and mass amounts of volcanic activity. Ice age lasted a few hundred years. Oceans levels were lower and exposing land connecting land masses; also, ice sheets would have made connections in northern and southern regions.
Note: my understanding is that ice age didn't affect (ie, freeze over) the middle latitudes.
Nope. The most recent ice age thawed around 11,000-12,000 years ago. That is about 5,000 years before Genesis says the universe was created.
🤣🤣 You can't have an ice age with thousand foot thick ice lasting only "a few hundred years." It violates basic laws of physics. But then, literally EVERYTHING about the "Great Flood" violates basic laws of physics. You might as well believe God just snapped his fingers and did it all himself. Kinda makes Noah's ark absurdly, ridiculously irrelevant, but it's better than trying to come up with some scientific explanation for ANY of this.
We actually have evidence that migration across the Bering land bridge took place long before the biblical mythological timeline.
So if there was a flood that resulted in even the highest mountain peaks were under water, then how did all that water disappear before all the log floating animals starved?
And how would they survive when they reach land where everything is dead, and nothing left to eat?
I don't think young Earth creationists can convincingky explain the spread of the animals after a global flood about 6.000 years ago. But how can they explain that Noah gathered all kinds of animals from South America to Australia into his ark?
He didnt gather them....the Lord brought them to the ark. Obviously its something miraculous
@@godfather95mbs33 Once you invoke miracles your story ceases to be science and starts being mythology.
Simple, there was no South America or Australia before the flood. Only Pangea.
@@goody8839everything is a miracle. Don't forget that. Can any scientist make a blade of grass? Or an atom? If you read the Bible for yourself you will know the truth. Only God knows the end from the beginning and all Bible prophecies come to pass exactly as prophesied. Did you know that? The Bible states that everything detectable is made from that which is UNDETECTABLE! SCIENTISTS CALL IT NOTHING 😂. Can scientists make anything from NOTHING? Now that would have to be a miracle, wouldn't it? Don't be DECEIVED by men. Listen to Jesus who warned about DECEPTION in the end of END TIMES. Remember He knows the end from the beginning. Maranatha
@@goody8839 We can't have a good faith conversation when your position begins with atheism.
Really large floating masses, huge in size, even in height, moving about upon ocean waters. So large as to begin “ greening-up” of plants surviving long enough as to support insect and terrestrials.
That it is. How true and rational science is made
This delusional nonsense? Grow up! There was no global flood in human history! This is post hoc rationalisation at its best!
The idea of ocean currents having something to do with terrestial species on either side of ocean bodies is interesting. That got me thinking. Why can't these similiar species between Australia and South-America simply be explained by the migrations of polynesian sailors? These people were experts on going from island to island, surviving. It's likely that they brought along seeds and organisms which they were familiar with in order to set up live stock and agraculture fast.
Fascinating!
Thanks for this interesting presentation. Extremely encouraging.
Remember, Mt. Saint Helen has erupted many times over Centuries, causing constant logs floating over Centuries.
How can the Biblical Model explain the occurrence of current animal species living on the same continents as their fossilised predecessors? Also how can the multi-layered stromatiltes be explained seeing as each layer would appear to have taken a long time to form and there being so many layers making it irreconcilable with the Biblical timeline. These seem to me as the two most intractable problems for the Creation model...I ask this as a believer and find them troubling.
I think angels delivering animals to their intended habitats is a better explanation. They made sure the 2 or 7 kiwi birds did not get lost or separated on the way to NZ.
Don't forget how these angels segregated Galapagos finches onto the Islands where by chance Darwin found them on his Beagle expedition in the 19th century, just in order to prove that the Bible story was going to be vindicated.
@@tikaanipippin Those ones must have adapted by non-evolutionary means, but yes, it is likely that angels delivered the ancestral tanagers to mainland Ecuador.
Could Noah have picked up those ants, earthworms, snakes before the flood?
With such a small population of both predator and prey, how did either survive the distribution of animal life?
The animals weren't released all at once. Birds first. Then birds of prey. Grazing animals next. Hunters last. Also the continents were closer together: see catastrophic plate tectonic.
God is in providential control of all of history. So there has to be solution. My first thought is that the prey could have had a head start, and could bred faster.
@@deepcosmiclove, That just means you have to feed the carnivores longer before they’re released.
@@deepcosmiclove unsatisfactory, nowhere near plausible.
For animals that would be predatory comming right off the ark, there would be corpses for ages to dine on from the floods death count. The predators wouldn't need to dine off of still loving organisms for quite some time.
So you are making up a story to compensate for the shortcomings of another made up story.

You're right. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Another possibility you didn't mention is that not one word of this is even close to being true.
@CarmenVeranda Even if you do not accept a young-earth creationist paradigm, you are still tasked with explaining why closely related animals are living in parts of the world separated by vast stretches of ocean. Today, lemurs live only on the island of Madagascar while their closest relatives lived on mainland Africa (as evidenced by the fossil record). Tortoises and iguanas living on the Galapagos islands are closely related to tortoises and iguanas in Central and South America. The closest fossil relatives of South American hoatzins, monkeys, caviomorphs (a group of rodents), and phorusrhacids (terror birds) are all found across the Atlantic. All of these examples of disjunct distributions post-date the break up of Pangaea (even according to an old-earth timescale). So literally the only way to account for them is by rafting.
Okay....but another possibility could be that it is true 🤔

For those who don’t believe in the flood. Then how is that there is 250 plus flood stories around the world. You will find similarities in the stories .
Lots of human cultures have flood stories because many human cultures arose near bodies of water subject to periodic flooding. These flood stories all differ in their details and there is zero evidence they are describing the same event. There are also numerous human cultures with NO flood stories.
People need water. Floods happen often. People remember the really big ones.
But if there is evidence for the great flood, then it is evidence that one of the other flood stories is true and the Bible story got it wrong. So then we can conclude that Zeus caused the flood, and Deucalion survived it. Or maybe it was Enlil who caused the flood.

Sooner or later people are going to have to face the fact that the continents broke apart in the days of Peleg, 100 years after the global flood. An asteroid hitting the earth could have been a contributing factor along with centrifugal force of the spinning Earth which caused the continents to slide north as a result. South Africa appears to be where the South Pole was before the breakup.
* It’s the reason for the glacial striations stamped on top of bedrock like a gigantic (broken) seal covering South America, Africa, India and Australia from glaciers that were moving from south to north from the time when the continents were all still connected to Antarctica at the South Pole. Of course this was after all the sediment layers from the global flood were deposited.
* It’s the reason fossils including Spinosaurus and sediment layers line up between South America, Africa, Madagascar, India and Australia. (The fossils and sediment layers were deposited first and then the continents broke apart, 100 years after the global flood.)
* It’s also the reason there are many frozen animals and forest ecosystems buried by tsunamis from the rise of sea levels in North America and Siberia as the continents were being shoved into the Arctic from the centrifugal force after the earth broke apart, possibly due to hardening of the sediments and other contributing factors.
* It’s the reason animals made it to South America from Africa and humans did not make it there since they were still trying to build the Tower of Babel before the breakup of the continents. However jaguars were separated from leopards, greater grisons were separated from African honey badgers, tapirs were separated from …tapirs, otters were separated from …otters and all of the other animals arrived at various isolated places around the world before the breakup of the continents.
* It’s the reason why the lifespan of humans was cut in half *a second time* since the global flood from a less than 500 year lifespan to a less than 250 year lifespan. It was a time of dramatic changes.
* It’s the reason why the meaning of the word Peleg in Hebrew that meant “divided” turned into “as (where) the waters flow” (in between the continents) in the later Aramaic form of Hebrew. That’s quite an impressive but understandable change in meaning.
* It’s the reason people isolated into family groups and began speaking their own language. (Everything that happens is of course ultimately by the power of God.)
* It’s the reason for the formation of the Marianas trench and other subduction zones. The potential for movements of the plates and continents is very likely considering the volumes associated with them. It wouldn’t take much geologically speaking to get them to move although they have reached a place of equilibrium at this point.
* It’s the reason there are dinosaur footprints showing that a dinosaur began walking in Africa and this same dinosaur continues walking in South America also showing that the breakup of the continents happened after the sediments were deposited by the global flood.
*Last but not least, it’s the reason penguins never made it to the Arctic since there was no land there for them to breed in the Arctic. …And now you know the rest of the story, the whole story.

The "rafting model" explains nothing, really. How almost all classes of Marsupials ended up in Australia?: For species, whether plants or animals to end up in the South America/Australia region is not explained by showing an ocean current (of modern day!) circulating between southern South America and Australia - cause how did they get to either of those two places from Mount Ararat, to begin with? (Think, for example "sloths crawling across Asia, climbing on a mythical raft on its way to South America"? If that was even possible - given the time-scale at open sea, why did the animals not simply climb onto a raft at the BEGINNING of the Flood and stay put, there? That would, in fact, by orders of magnitude be a more plausible explanation than the one given, here).
The "rafting model" is but a desperate straw for Young Earth Creationists to cling to, because however impossibly unlikely, it is the least desperate brain child, when the Earth HAS to be 6000 years old and the Flood HAS to have happened 4,500 years ago, and all land-living life HAS to have spread from eastern Turkey.
But reality is that this is ludicrous. It doesn't even qualify as a "model". Models have to have something of substance to be based on. This "model" does not. It really is merely "for-a-lack-of-anything-else,-we-pretend-that-this-is-a-valid-hypothesis-and-invite-you-to-pretty-please-not-laugh,-cause-if-you-do-we-might-counter-by-questioning-your-faith".
And here you are. Thinking everything came from nothing, life came from non life and chaos produces order. God's word is truth
@kurtdejgaard You seem unaware that even mainstream scientists are beginning to accept oceanic dispersal (via rafting) as an important mechanism for explaining disjunct distributions of plants and animals around the world (Ali, et al. 2019). For example, this is how monkeys, caviomorphs (a group of rodents), hoatzins, and phorusrhacids (terror birds) are thought to have gotten to South America, across the Atlantic Ocean, from Africa. As such, I do not think it is a fair assessment to say the rafting model is "useless" or lacking substance when even mainstream scientists are beginning to use it as well.
While the presentation above does utilize modern ocean current configuration, ocean configuration in early Cenozoic (post-Flood) times would have been largely the same as it is today because the continental arrangement was also largely the same. More specifically, there very likely would have been a form of South Equatorial Current in the early Cenozoic.
Regarding your specific sloth example, tree sloths do not appear to have existed at the time of the Flood. They seem to belong to the same created kind as the ground sloths, and likely descended from them. Ground sloths were more at home on the ground and could travel much faster than their modern, tree-dwelling cousins. This if further explained here: zoocreation.com/the-sloths.

But then, I guess, that's the least of your worries: A post-Flood Ice age with a mile-thick ice blanket that "just" came and went in Europe, North America and Siberia, while nobody noticed, must make it hard for anyone with a science background to continue all of this, with a straight face.
PS. I like your "land-sloth" hypothesis. Rapid adaptation by evolution (a process that must be at least 100 times faster than Darwin's) is needed.
Do you also suggest that the emu flew to Australia and then rapid-evolved in the same way to lose its ability to fly?
Maybe all Australian animals had wings and lost them after they arrived, by the same process.
-Again, a considerably more likely explanation (however ludicrous) than the rather desperate raft-suggestion.
PPS. As for you "raft" reference, a quote from it: (quote) "The few cases where LDOR has been invoked for mammal colonization have all involved small-bodied animals, several of which are able to drastically reduce their metabolic rates through torpor/hibernation when food and water are scarce." (unquote)
Which of the kangaroos can do this?
Koala?
Wombat?
Tasmanian Devil?
...
Unbelievable 😂
What an interesting hypothesis, at utterly no scientific reasoning to support it. Considering the timeline that most people believe that the flood occurred. We have absolute knowledge that many people of the earth did not suffer any such occurrence in that time strain. The fact that the biblical words that were used from the original Hebrew were translated in a completely erroneous fashion. Indicating that a flood that was tremendously large but limited to a fairly large geographical area. Which did not occur across the world. Indicates that it was either a localized event. Or it's a complete mistranslation of the huge global catastrophes, plural, and we have still have localized animal populations that are completely different from anything on other parts of the planet, especially when you look at animal species that are natural to Australia but virtually nowhere else on the planet. This is the most childlike construct I have ever heard.
I am of the theory that many of the changes that scientists think take great eons of time to occur do not occur in Long stretches as much as people would like to think. But there are great stretches of time where some isolated occurrences do happen, or have happened. The Chinese for example have written records that go back long before the timeline of the flood and list no such occurrence, and they have a very consistent timeline for their history. And have been shown to be highly accurate when you finally learn the truth. But many of the things listed in the Bible are either not in exact chronological order, and/or their chronological order is considerably abbreviated.
There is approx 200,000 to 300,000 species of animals that inhabit Australia, of which approx 100,000 have been categorised, think about the probability of that number ( and actually in mating pairs ) floating on logs to Australia 😂😂😂😂
You need to Stop using the MERCATOR Map, it is Absolutely out of scale and Distorted.
Pleasee Re-Do your video with correct distances on a Gleeson Map or even ball.
Lol
Noah’s flood never happened. All those animals on one boat? 😂🤣😂🤣😂 NO CHANCE!!!!! It’s another FAIRYTALE! in Religious books.
Some simpler answers: Kangaroos didn't need to hop back to Australia because the writers of Genesis didn't know kangaroos or Australia exist, therefor there were no kangaroos on Noah's ark. Simplest answer:Noah's ark and the worldwide flood are myths.
Surely the kangaroos, wombats, koalas, thylacines, platypus, and wallabies would have simply hopped onto a QANTAS flight, no doubt they would have been able to negotiate a good group rate.
It’s easy God provided a way and put them where they needed to be. It’s not too hard to figure out.
So God magic, that’s nonsense
@@artifacthunter1472 , But God couldn’t figure out a way to save all those animals from drowning in the first place?
