Travis getting hyped by the end of the game about being a badass fairy is so fun and charming. It was like a light switch turned on and he got super into the build he got. Tbh I thought daemons had better stuff than fairies, but as a fan of beetles, I really love his character so I'm happy that he choosed fairy and made it badass like that.
Travis is probably more animated than anyone else because they were all clearly having a blast, but I would love to have as much fun doing anything as Travis had in this one shot 😂
I wish there was more Travis in this one if ONLY because he was trepidatious about playing that race to begin with. I feel like he spent a lot of time in the back lines but I'm glad he still had a blast.
I like how there's no set or suggested lore about how the races interact. I mean, you didn't have to have a rivalry between goblins and humans in 5e, but there is that precedent. It seems like Daggerheart could be considered a clean slate for character creation.
I love how truly in-character Taliesin and Liam are throughout. Sam, too, but the other two are so very physically embodying their characters. Interesting to see Travis taking a break from a crazy accent, too, after a having to do two campaigns with three (or more) very distinct accents all the time. He deserves a break after Chetney alone.

I think for sure Marisha and Liam will bring a version of their characters. Because they both already seem to have ideas. Sam might bring his character back, but might change races. @@imperialknight3942sounds like it just wouldn't be right for that particular table. I can see it working really well for some people I play with, and less so for others. No reason you couldn't just continue a loop around the table though, and the DM breaks when activated.
@@imperialknight3942 Either they'd have to learn to share the spotlight, or they'd stop being invited to the games. There IS someone stopping someone from taking 4 actions in a row: The GM. Whether that be in-game consequences, or an out-of-game discussion
You can easily play this with a "everyone goes before someone goes again" rule. During this one shot Matt called people for their turn a few times to spread actions more evenly. This system might get weird if your table is stacked with power gamers, but it's fairly easy to see that daggerheart is not made for those people anyway. I haven't looked that deeply into it yet but MCDM's new system might be more fitting for groups with more focus on strategic play.
It requires a skilled DM and a sharing group of players. I've had DMs in Fate and Apocalypse system games that also hog 'turns' with their NPCs and adversaries too, so I can see that happening too.
When the daggerheart campaign starts, we need to see the session zero, loved knowing a little about them before getting started. It really helped me get invested in the characters quickly.
Really enjoyed this. Love how collaborative DaggerHeart is so far. I would like to see something to ensure quieter players get a turn in combat and that prevents over eager players from unintentionally running over others
a great way to handle this is give out a couple warnings to an over eager player then if they still cant handle sharing the spotlight not playing with them anymore.
For those commenting about going back to live shows: As tough as it is to hear, it's not about you. They pre-record to fit in with their lives and it works better for them
Agreed. Whenever I see them live now it always feels like they're half exhausted, rather then just enjoying things. Pre recorded gives them enough space to have lives and is better for them as a business.
I literally can't tell the difference between live and prerecorded kinda like WWE there is no difference except the actors get more of a break without us having to know
the energy in this episode would not be replicated over weeks of scheduled live shows. they're excited about their new game, recurring episodes would not be like this.
I honest to god don't understand why people care if it's live or pre-recorded. It's not like they are stopping every minute to read and answer chat like mostly streamers. And being honest, I didn't realized they pre-recorded until I read a comment not long ago.
After character intros I realized.... did they unintentionally create a Kung fu panda ttrpg?? I'm here for it but I realized they pretty much have the whole crew!
Yeah, that's my only critique. If you want to play Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew, this is the game for it. If you want to play a more Tolkienesque, or Dragonlance-feel campaign, I'm not sure if this would work unless you start banning races... uh, heritages.
@@davidarmstrong1617 Eh, it still has the races that exist in Tolkien and Dragonlance, doesn’t it? Humans, elves, dwarves, and the like. So play those. Nothing saying you absolutely must play every character option in the system.
@@ffreed Hence why I specifically said, "unless you start banning races." That's not a problem, per se, but I know a ton of players get their panties in a twist when they are denied core rules options.
@@davidarmstrong1617 I suppose. I never understood that mentality, though, if the person was never going to select a given option in the first place. I’ve seen it in RPG and video game communities: people act like the existence of an option means they’re forced to play it. But then, that kind of player is going to be difficult to cater to anyway.
The lax nature of one shot gave me early campaign 2 vibes and I love it; seems so much freer to explore and enjoy the little moments with this system too. Love how unforced character scenes and action feel (not that im saying C3 is bad) but im loving Daggerheart already
That was a great one-shot. Now excuse me, I'm going to create some Galapa enemies, some Fungril NPCs, a couple of Human player characters and finally give light to my Super Mario campaign.
I immediately fell in love with each of these characters! Instant investment in the world through these characters. Ashley already even seems to have a better grasp of this system. I would love more of this group and I can't wait to start my own Daggerheart adventures
The cards and simple character sheet probably help her out a lot. Having something quick and physical is a lot easier to track than the dnd character sheet and dnd Beyond which can place character abilities spells and stats sometimes all over the place.
It's fascinating how the set and tech had been designed with the expectation of no live shows anymore. People mentioning the apparent issues with audio balance here are seeming to not notice how much rebalancing has been happening in post in C3. The personal shotgun mics are fantastic for that, but must be a pain for managing with live improv. Especially when you have some performers who are naturally louder/more reasonant and some who are medically incentivised to avoid being loud.
Happy, Happy Anniverary. I have been with you since the first Campaign. You mates deserve all that you have acheived and more. I cannot wait to see this! Thank you!
I loved the fact that they were actually live again! Felt like a true return to form! As for the system, I liked it and can see a lot of potential. My one concern seems to be echoed by quite a few people and that is that without initiative I could see quieter players being skipped over and not really having their time to shine. I personally like the no initiative aspect, but am curious to see how they combat that issue.
I heard one person suggest action tokens for the players. When they do their action, they hand in their token. When all the tokens are handed in, pass them back out
Already house ruled everyone gets 1 token and only once they are cashed in get everyone get their tokens back Only system we could jurty rig that seemed to keep order making sure everyone got a go

@warriorboy105 They've brought in a lot of guests for different one shots etc. Like ExU or Candela. I'm assuming OP meant it's nice to see the original cast do something other than the main campaigns.
That was a great show! As someone new to the D&D world and Daggerheart, I truly enjoyed it. Just two weeks ago, my two sons and I played D&D together for the second time, with one of them serving as the DM. We absolutely loved it, and the best part was being all together. Your cast is wonderful. I wish you great financial and friendship success!
Guessing it is to keep the momentum of having the playtest being out going. Wouldn't really be great if they would be like "haha, we have this one shot for our new system we want you to playtest!" and then not have the VOD up, since this will be a lot of people's way to experience how the system works, myself included XD
My group play tested this system and it was SO FUN! The lack of initiative order really keeps everyone engaged and thinking on their feet the whole time. Rather than waiting, sometimes for a long while, for your turn you stay focused to see where you can best jump in. The mechanics behind the roles, fear, hope etc. I thought I wouldn’t like but I loved it and it somehow makes you feel like your GM is more a player so the whole table is just energized more. Also for timid role players the starting questions really brings the role play and your character to life so quickly! Forming deep relationships with deep characters. I can’t say enough, they have really made some great decisions here! (I said all this in the survey too!) We will keep using Daggerheart!🖤
This was my first long video of this channel and I really loved it! Would really like to see more daggerheart and / or those characters. It feels like I've found a new hobby space and love it
No-initiative seems like the difference between Scrabble and Bananagrams. Instead of making plans that are outdated by the time your turn arrives, everyone is scrambling at the same time for the best result.
I’ve only ever seen live episodes when they were doing quirky side-shows, it was so cool to see them play a game live! 10/10 experience, hope they get back into it but definitely understand why they prefer their current format.
I would love to see the Menagerie again. The Characters are so intriguing. Maybe you could do a 4 part series like EXU Calamity with them. PS: This is the first time in my 25 years of life that I commented on a TH-cam video. This should show how much that would mean to me.
Something I really, really, REALLY like about how this is set up is that character creation has options that would allow you to be exclusively RP and it wouldn’t take anything away from the game if there was no combat. Something I’ve pitched to my d&d group is a one-shot or campaign where it is exclusively exploration and puzzle based, which sounds amazing to me (for context, I like games like Myst). But when I actually tried gaming it out I realized so much of progression in d&d is combat based, so it felt like you were cutting off a limb because there are so many features that would just kind of sit there. But with Daggerheart I’ve already built out about 12 different characters that you could play a non-combat archeology campaign where all you do is explore and flesh out the world and solve puzzles and mysteries linked to different regions, cultures, and histories. Think the new Tomb Raider games, but if you were just exploring an ancient culture and solving complex issues and puzzles rather than constantly battling a shadowy and power hungry organization. (Dreamy sigh) Now, a disclaimer: despite how this ☝️probably sounds, I don’t dislike combat. Having said that, it has been a LONG time since I’ve seen a dungeon delved that didn’t have a two hour long combat interruption while making discoveries, which is kind of what prompted the thought of “what if there wasn’t combat”. It honestly sounds like a cool kind of dynamic shift from a hero-v-forces of evil concept to a “there’s so much knowledge lost to time, so let’s find it” concept. That, and I’m a massive nerd.
Instead of combat you should just have some thrilling moments. Like avoiding hidden traps, falling debris or whatever. There should be some element of danger imo even if no combat.
@@joncarr5545 Oh, absolutely! That’s why I made the Tomb Raider reference, because there are non-combat puzzles that are 100% lethal or spit poison at you if you get something wrong, or ruins filled with booby traps.
I get the appeal in theory but I see problems that can arise from it. 1. You are intentionally/unintentionally blocking out players who DO enjoy combat in some capacity. Which is probably a good chunk if not the majority of the ttrpg community. Even Daggerheart has combat oriented classes and abilities. 2. After the novelty of the experience wears off, it can quickly become boring to not have variation in the gameplay loop. 3. Exploration and dungeon delving often results in the GM talking A LOT, so an entire campaign of just that is exponentially more. As a GM myself, I try not to talk beyond what I need to despite how much I enjoy my own voice. And even with a party that likes to RP amongst themselves, there is only so many times they can do that before they are looking to the GM to actually give them something to do.
@@nojusticenetwork9309 I mean 1) It wouldn’t be “blocking” anybody considering the concept would be discussed with the group before anything could even be initiated. 2) RP isn’t exclusive to the delve and would include societal interactions and attempts at gaining information from locals and sources that could payoff during puzzle solving, trap interaction, finding specific information you’re contracted to find, ect. Even better if the puzzles are difficult and a trip back to the surface for additional attempts at finding pertinent information becomes suggestible. So “novelty” isn’t a word I would associate with something that has this much innovation potential, and also feels kind of dismissive to games like Myst or Nancy Drew where the entire point is exploration, discovery, and interaction with a complete lack of combat. 3) If it was just five hours of a person behind a screen talking then I would suggest a podcast. It’s meant to be collaborative and interactive. The teamwork of solving puzzles, untangling information, discovering secrets, and finding ways to wheedle, bribe, intimidate, or charm information from people is all PC based and, if we were to go off the map marking process from the group character creation video, even what has the potential for discovery would/could be a collaborative process. People actually interested in this would be coming in with the knowledge that narration would have a little more heft, but group discussion, personal backstories, individual interaction, and conflict between PCs and NPCs would still be primary facets of gameplay, especially since I doubt players would just sit there and twiddle their thumbs if they felt unfulfilled with the process. So I can appreciate the perspective, but most of what you mentioned seems like a bit of a short sighted view, especially when considering combat is 1 of about 20 other aspects that are provided when playing a social narrative game. ACOFAF on Dimension20 is a great example where if they didn’t have the hunt, a duel, or the final combat at the end it wouldn’t be some massive impact to gameplay or narrative, and the latter two could viably be replaced with scenes designed around social exposure and consequences, a tact that is actually switched to during the duel when Andhera interrupts what is ostensibly a death match only for the scene to segue into a new social alliance and an attempt from Hob to humiliate the Court of Wonder.
So I'm sure it's coincidental but what I think is really fun about the heritages that daggerheart has you can make an actual Mario party! You have Koopas (turtle people), mario/luigi/peach/daisy (human), toad/goomba (fungril), Yoshi/bowser (drakonia), donkey/diddy Kong (simmia)
@@caitlyndeambra2209Yep. The Galapa are obviously the Turtles. The Katari could be easily reflavored as Splinter or fox mutants like Alopex or Ninjara. Lots of possibilities.

there really is something so much more endearing about them actually being live. I can't put my finger on it but its palpable. I understand why pre recording is so much easier and efficient for them but having bells hells live every once in a while would go a long way
That subtle feeling of being live is a heady feeling for actors. It can fill them with nerve and keep them on their toes in a way a camera can’t. They don’t see the audience, but they know in the back of their minds that we are there. That’s why it feels different without a clear reason to point towards. It’s all subtle mind stuff, but it makes all the difference.
I don't disagree, but also this was a big night for them on multiple fronts - ninth anniversary of CR and also the launch of the playtest of DH. Of course, they were more emotionally charged and excited at the table. Having said that, I do not oppose an occasional livestream one-shot with this group at all, it would be quite fun for everyone.
Meh. I would rather the cast not have to think about a live audience. Like in games I run, I much prefer a relaxed group of players that are focused on each other. Them being live just never really meant anything to me.

@coreyh3994 he might have hung back because of the impression that wizards/mages are more squishy.
I like how there's no set or suggested lore about how the races interact. I mean, you didn't have to have a rivalry between goblins and humans in 5e, but there is that precedent. It seems like Daggerheart could be considered a clean slate for character creation.
I remember the sheer joy in the chat when Sam's The Seep from Session 0 was used for the oneshot. It was just thousands of people shouting THE SEEP!
The fact that marisha just straight up played Jessica rabbit is everything 😂
Jessica Rabbit, Betty Boop and Harley Quinn all together

hey CR team WE LOVED THE ONE SHOT (and it's live aspect). Happy 9th Anniversary!!
I keep forgetting Taliesin is not just playing a dashing rapier wielding rogueish warrior, but also a turtle-man XD
YES! THIS! SO MUCH!
He’s Orly if Orly was Kingsley
Is he, perhaps, in the relative ages of his people, a teenager?
There was so much cool, crazy uncle vibes in his facial expressions during the game too. Loved it

Omg this is so perfect, I couldn't put it better myself
Would ABSOLUTELY love to see the Menagerie return again. You can’t let it end here with just this sample size of a potential story 😊
Seriously. I was picturing the animation the entire time. A cartoon would be amazing advertisement for Daggerheart too. That was great. It was very cinematic.
If what I've been lead to believe is true, then Campaign 4 will be Daggerheart so I would not be surprised in the slightest if we see some returning characters.
I think for sure Marisha and Liam will bring a version of their characters. Because they both already seem to have ideas. Sam might bring his character back, but might change races. I doubt Travis will given he does like being a spellcaster. And I am not sure about Ashley or Laura, but I have a feeling they might be sisters with their next characters. Talisen I am not sure about.
@@iceman3317 I hope Travis does bring his back or at least make a spellcasting character since it is something he's not familiar with. Gotta do something different.

This was so much fun! What if instead of having advantage/disadvantage the verbiage was dagger related like... having an edge/drawback. e.g. "you have an edge on that roll" etc. 🤔💝
Love this. Especially because it's hard to separate hearing "advantage" from rolling a second d20 and taking the higher roll. A different term to signify the bonus d6 would be great. You should submit this to their game feedback!

Okay, "Let's make a molehill out of this mountain." is unironically a cool line. Cheesy as it is, I love it.
I love the basic world building during character creation. And how it was so effortlessly added to the session. Such as the 'seep'.
The way the session 0 felt like it was easy to incorporate their ideas it also provides a path for more DM control on select things if they wanted so Homebrew settings is still on the table
"Effortlessly" 🤣

A lot of us don’t have a group to try daggerheart out, seeing how the game plays will help us give feedback about what we like and what not
Ah, yes: Pango and Wango, sons of Django, enjoyers of Mango.
I hear they love to dance the Tango, enjoy playing pachinko, and drive around in Durangos.
"my wango got stuck into the seep and turned all red"
I can't believe none of them are named Tango.
I’m loving the whole “no initiative just go for it” thing. And having clear rules for tag-teaming an opponent is pretty cool too. Can’t wait to try this system out! Great job, Crit Role!!
Idk. Seems like it will make "ball hogs" just be more annyoing. Nothibg is stopping someone from going 4 times in a row while the others just sit waiting. Weird system. Def needs a turn order

Go to the live feed on the channel and they have a 2hr session 0!
Really enjoyed this. Love how collaborative DaggerHeart is so far. I would like to see something to ensure quieter players get a turn in combat and that prevents over eager players from unintentionally running over others
You could be conscious enough to remember give your play mates a spotlight or use the optional initiative rules
a great way to handle this is give out a couple warnings to an over eager player then if they still cant handle sharing the spotlight not playing with them anymore.
Yeah, only play with a bunch of passive nerds.
GM'd my first session of Daggerheart last weekend. IT'S SO GOOD!
I literally can't tell the difference between live and prerecorded kinda like WWE there is no difference except the actors get more of a break without us having to know
Also, if it's pre recorded we get to have good subtitles, which are a necessity for some of us
the energy in this episode would not be replicated over weeks of scheduled live shows. they're excited about their new game, recurring episodes would not be like this.
I honest to god don't understand why people care if it's live or pre-recorded. It's not like they are stopping every minute to read and answer chat like mostly streamers. And being honest, I didn't realized they pre-recorded until I read a comment not long ago.
Would love to see a series of this. Like an episode every few weeks, like the candela obscura sort of length
After character intros I realized.... did they unintentionally create a Kung fu panda ttrpg?? I'm here for it but I realized they pretty much have the whole crew!
You could also do a She-Ra and the Princesses of Power RPG with the system as well.

I thought the same thing. Curious fact: Marisha is playing bards in both one shots (but very different from each other)
I appreciate that Daggerheart has a built-in mechanic for Fluffernutters

When all the tokens are handed in, pass them back out
Well that's a good idea! Quick, simple, and maintains the no initiative feel.
Already house ruled everyone gets 1 token and only once they are cashed in get everyone get their tokens back
Only system we could jurty rig that seemed to keep order making sure everyone got a go

(I said all this in the survey too!)
We will keep using Daggerheart!🖤

Loved everything. Absolutely amazing. PLEASE make this a full campaign.
(Dreamy sigh)
Now, a disclaimer: despite how this ☝️probably sounds, I don’t dislike combat.
WORLDBUILDING!!!!!!
Ashley was born to play a tiny frog with a hat.
Only took her about 35 years of acting to find "that one role." Worth it, IMO.
That's because the frog is just Auggie from Candela Obscura.

there really is something so much more endearing about them actually being live.
Yeah, there simply is a something special about being live. CR just lost a bit of its magic with the prerecorded episodes.

Please, yes, more daggerheart!! The excitement during combat was palpable!! You could see everyone was really engaged!! Loved it, and love you guys!!
This was an absolutely stunning showcase! we were spoiled to have not one, not two, but THREE different maps 🥹🫶
so much work has gone into this game and I think that I echo many many others when I say please, please continue!!
The characters, the dynamics, the art, and the story.. all too good to leave as a single one shot!
To the Menagerie of heroes, sending love from Japan! 🇯🇵 ❤
What a fun intro one-shot. Would love to see more of this Menagerie! Would love to see more of their backstories be part of arcs if possible, like a trip to their hometowns or making it to Kexon's destination. They could even just be their own one-shots, but I feel like there's a campaign in the works, even a shorter one.
The teamwork makes me so happy. What a fun battle mechanic of not having to hold actions to do that!
Happy NEIN'th anniversary, Critical Role.❤🧡💛💚💙💜
As a Dark Tower fan, I appreciated the lobstrosity shout-out.
I’m obsessed with the character art SOOO much, oh my gosh I’d definitely commission them again
Good luck finding an opening, usually when cr asks artists for art they are full for the next couple years lol
