Got our doors up today! I liked this video 7 years ago. Putting the metal on and this weekend and adding windows to ours.

Using this design for a remote hangar in Alaska. Will post up a vid when we are done. Will add some removable vertical 2x6's along the back side of the doors for additional wind bracing behind it. We will not be going in and out a lot over the winter and will keep the doors open most of the time in summer. 1" foam board on the back will be light and good enough for firing up the wood stove up in winter. Thanks for the great idea!

I’ve been waiting 7 years to build me a set of these doors. Hopefully this year is the year.

I'll be using this design in my hangar/home. 2 containers stacked side by side and two on top of those, spanned with a pitched roof. Plane in the middle. Where it belongs. Putting this concept on both ends. Thank you. Russ Chandler, Broken Bow, OK.!

Super Design!! They could be attached at the bottom of the door too.

Heck yea Dude! Those doors are the SHIT! Only had to watch the first 1:31 to see the genius in this. Building our new place in rural Alaska a little bit at a time and this is defiantly the only way to go for us. Thanks very much for all of the info.

Where I live , these doors would last until the first storm , then they would collapse and the rest of the light weight building would blow apart.

My thoughts exactly at the 1 minute mark of the video. Back to the bi-fold horizontal build.

This is a very interesting option. I just started my search for a hangar door and estimates range from 3500 to 7000 for a 36x10. My home/hangar built is planned for mid 2021. Will definitely be on the list for consideration.

Did virtually the same design except I had the fold out rather than in. Been working for about 5 years.

That design for the doors is pretty ingenious. I think when I build my hangar I am going to do something similar. Although I think I am going to use foam sandwiched between 3/8" plywood glued up with PL300 and then skin the outside of that, it will make for a light but stiff door, then I can put a 2x4 border to solidify the frames that will get glued and screwed in.

Great job. Any chance i could get a copy of the plans Jim Robinson of the Erie air park did not give you? I’m interested in building just such a door for my T-hangar

Hey I noticed I am seeing this three years after it is posted can you tell me how the doors are holding up and how they do in the wind? You’ve got my curiosity up your design is in genius in my opinion

Mr. Bean Patch. If you’re still around I’m about to build your doors. Would like for you to be able to watch our video. It’s taken us 7 years to get our building done. But with Gods help we’re almost done.

Just wondering how your doors have held up over the 6 years since you posted. Have you made any changes to them or would you do anything different. Thanks.

Just a suggestion/idea, if you placed a skin on the inside (same as on the outside) your door would be MUCH MUCH stiffer. They look way too floppy now. Even so, impressive!

I'm to the point of building doors on my hangar and came across your video and I'm impressed with your doors and the price. I was wondering if you could show me the outside where the hinges are and how you handled the metal and trim around the hinges and the seams? Thanks Robert

I agree with you that they are a little "floppy" for my liking, but the basic concept is a good one. I would turn the 2x4's on their side for rigidity which of course would necessitate a bit of further engineering on the center hinge part. But again I say a clever design. And cheap too I think.

Those doors appear to flex quite a bit. How do they handle on a windy day, and how to you secure the doors to prevent them from moving and getting damaged?

The doors do flex some but I have some cables that I am going to run diagonally to stiffen up the flex I pin them to the ground when open and I don't open them on real windy days. Not the best but at this price point, I am very happy with them. Thanks for the Question Jim.

You are genius, man if you don't mind that I can use your idea on my hangar that would be nice. I did get quotas for 8k plus on 40-45th foot span. This is the answers I was looking for. Thanks .

How much was the total cost of this hangar? Looks simple but goood!
You can maybe add the door stiffness if you put metal also inner side of the door. And as many screws as possible, also outer side. It makes it like box.

Not sure those doors would survive strong winds. Seemed pretty flimsy when opening and fully open.

This is great for a short term product. 29 gauge metal is way too light. But hey put the drug rug on and have fun. Cheap is absolutely what it is.

A friend has doors like this on his hanger and they big and heavy even using steel studs. They are not good for a long term solution.

Brave work. Are you an engineer? If you want to stiffen the doors, no cables(alone), will help you. The thickness of your doors is the problem. You could make it out of Titanium and still will flutter. You need to widen the thickness of the doors. How could you do it, without increasing their weight that much, to snap your hinge(s)? Just screw another similar cover plates on the inner side of them (instead of the insulation you mentioned). Add the cables(if you have it, but not mandatory) in between and poor some polyurethane foam, here and there, up to your budget( caution-the foam expands once it cures; find a way to press the plates together), and mention twice that it was my idea. :) They will still flutter a bit, but according to the width you manage to achieve, it will be much less. The best gain is that no (usual) strong wind will break your doors, though.

To thicken the doors all you do is turn the 2x4s sideways, the weight will not change, the amount of lumber will not change. All that changes is the thickness. That's how I had my doors done.
