  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali contain 195 sutras organized into four chapters: Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada, and Kaivalya Pada. It expounds Yoga philosophy, one of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy. The munitrayam of Yoga is Patanjali, Vyasa, and Shankaracharya. A deep and thorough analysis of the human mind, the psychology of samskaras and the method of Ashtanga Yoga are some of the many unique contributions of this text. Swami Tattwamayananda will be teaching these sutras in the light of the traditional Sanskrit commentaries. The recommended text for this lecture series is “Raja Yoga” by Swami Vivekananda.
This series of lectures is hosted by the Stanford Hindu Students Association and given by Swami Tattwamayananda, minister of the Vedanta Society of Northern California, San Francisco. These videos are being cross-posted on Vedanta Society of New York's TH-cam channel.

    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Swami Venkatesananda, one of the direct disciples of Swami Shivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh, did a line by line translation of Patanjali's Yogasutra. He is very articulate and wrote it based on his own experience. This book is the best translation one can get from the recent past. I very highly recommend it.

Agree with the OP. No reason for TH-cam videos to have bad audio in this day and age. This is a uniquely Indian trait to ignore the small details like line in recording. So much wisdom in videos like this but poor audio quality ruins the experience. And please let's not talk about how the wisdom is important, not the medium and how it's 'good enough'. Nonetheless, thank you for the lecture Swamiji 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

You will notice that Indian spoken English is consistently more easily transcribed by the TH-cam language algorithms, more so than British, American or Australian English. This is either because Indian English is accent neutral or because Indian origin engineers in Silicon Valley are messing with us big time .

Pranam, lot of information he gave, explained beautifully.I have recently came across a term call Adhikari , related to students of vedanta. If i have understood a little bit of it , this term means to ask questions on such vast field - vedanta a student must qualify certain qualities. Can someone explain this, and how is it relatable/applicable in the present time for non monastic students of vedanta. Even I remember on of the vedantasara classes mahraj mentioned a term called samskaras. After samskaras one can ask qst. to the teacher. So does qst means only doubt ? 🙏❤

Student is qualified (adhikari), if he or she has these qualities :

      Pranam,
I have prepared the following answer using the words of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Sarvapriyananda maharaj and other senior Swamis I have had the privilege to study under.
You are right! An Adhikari is one who is qualified for vedantic study.
Householders CAN realise God no matter how far the goal might seem and however much the difficulties we face.
      Sri Ramakrishna says:
"SUB-JUDGE: “Sir, must we renounce the world?”
MASTER: “No. Why should you? A man can realize God even in the world.
You may ask, ‘If worldly life is so difficult, then what is the way?’ The
way is constant practice. At Kāmārpukur I have seen the women of the carpenter families flattening rice with a husking-machine. They are always fearful of the pestle’s smashing their fingers; and at the same time they go on nursing their children and bargaining with customers. They say to the customers, ‘Pay us what you owe before you leave.’
“An immoral woman goes on performing her household duties, but all the time her mind dwells on her sweetheart."
In order to become qualified, we have to practice these 4 things constantly.
      1. *Viveka* - discernment/discrimination.
This is done by asking ourselves-
      Q. "What is the real source of happiness? What is the real source of unhappiness?
      A. The Atman/Brahman within is the real source of bliss. Unhappiness is due to identification with the body-mind complex.
      Q. "What is permanent? "What is impermanent"
      A. Brahman alone is permanent. All its appearances are impermanent.
      Sri Ramakrishna says:
'Lust and gold’ is impermanent. God is the only Eternal Substance. What does a man get with money? Food, clothes, and a dwelling-place-nothing more. You cannot realize God with its help. Therefore money can never be the goal of life. That is the process of discrimination.
Consider-what is there in money or in a beautiful body? Discriminate and you will find that even the body of a beautiful person consists of bones, flesh, fat, and other disagreeable things. Why should a person give up God and direct their attention to such things? Why should a person forget God for their sake?
      Q. "What is real?" "What is simply an appearance of the reality?"
      A. Brahman is real. All the appearances of Brahman from Ajnana (ignorance) downwards are without substance - they are appearances of Brahman because they do not exist independent of Brahman. Brahman lends them their existence.
      Sri Ramakrishna says:
"There is fire in the hearth; therefore the rice and pulse and potatoes and the other vegetables jump about in the pot. They jump about as if to say: ‘We are here! We are jumping!’ This body is the pot. The mind and intelligence are the water. The objects of the senses are the rice, potatoes, and other vegetables. The ‘I-consciousness’ identified with the senses says, ‘I am jumping about.’ And Satchidānanda is the fire."
Brahman lends existence to the world in the same way fire lends heat. Take away the fire - you cannot cook.
      Further, Sri ramakrishna says:
MASTER: “Man experiences three states of consciousness: waking, dream, and deep sleep. Those who follow the path of knowledge explain away the three states. According to them, Brahman is beyond the three states. It is also beyond the gross, the subtle, and the causal bodies, and beyond the three gunas-sattva, rajas, and tamas. All these are māyā, like a reflection in a mirror. The reflection is by no means the real substance. Brahman alone is the Substance and all else is illusory.
“The knowers of Brahman say, further, that it is the identification of the soul with the body that creates the notion of duality. In that state of identification the reflection appears real. When this identification disappears, a man realizes, ‘I am He; I am Brahman.’ ”
      2. *Vairagya* - dispassion
With the conviction that Brahman alone is worth pursuing, as non-monastics we have to give up all other attachments mentally. At the same time we need to have attraction for the spiritual path.
"MASTER: “Tell me, what is the meaning of renunciation?”
M: “Renunciation does not mean simply dispassion for the world. It means dispassion for the world and also longing for God.
      MASTER: “You are right."
"The householder may be a ’hidden’ yogi. None recognizes him. The householder should renounce mentally, not outwardly.”
      3. *Shad sampatti* - six fold treasures to sustain our spiritual question
      - shama - restraint of the body
      - dama - restraint of the mind
      - uparati - withdrawing from distractions
      - samadhana -after withdrawing from distractions, staying focused on vedanta
      - titiksha - fortitude - putting up with what life throws at you and continuing to study and apply Vedanta.
      Sri Ramakrishna said:
      1. Je shoi sei roi je na shoi sei naash hoi - ""forbear! Forbear! Forbear! One who forbears wins all. One who doesn't is destroyed."
      2. Look at the anvil of a blacksmith -how it is hammered and beaten ; yet it moves not from its place. Let men learn patience and endurance from it."
      - Shraddha - having a working faith that your teacher is not going to deceive you and approaching vedanta with due reverence.
Sri Ramakrishna said "Once a person has faith he has achieved everything. There is nothing greater than faith."
      4. *Mumukshutvam* - Longing to be free.
      Sri Ramakrishna says:
M: “Under what conditions does one see God?”
MASTER: “Cry to the Lord with an intensely yearning heart and you will certainly see Him. People shed a whole jug of tears for wife and children. They swim in tears for money. But who weeps for God? Cry to Him with a real cry.... Longing is like the rosy dawn. After the dawn out comes the sun. Longing is followed by the vision of God."
Hint: all 4 qualifications are causally linked. Viveka --> generates Vairagya ---> generates shad sampatti ---> generates mumukshutvam
We may not have all these qualities, but we have to start studying vedanta anyway. The fact that you have started studying vedanta itself indicates that you have the seeds of these qualities. These seeds will flower by -
      1. *Karma Yoga* - Selfless action - overcomes selfishness.
      Sri Ramakrishna says:
      M. (humbly): “How ought we to live in the world?”
MASTER: “Do all your duties, but keep your mind on God. Live with all-with wife and children, father and mother-and serve them. Treat them as if they were very dear to you, but know in your heart of hearts that they do not belong to you.
“A maidservant in the house of a rich man performs all the household duties, but her thoughts are fixed on her own home in her native village. She brings up her master’s children as if they were her own. She even speaks of them as ‘my Rama’ or ‘my Hari’. But in her own mind she knows very well that they do not belong to her at all.
“The tortoise moves about in the water. But can you guess where her thoughts are? There on the bank, where her eggs are lying. Do all your duties in the world, but keep your mind on God.
      2. *Bhakti Yoga* - devotion to God overcomes unhealthy emotional attachments
      Sri Ramakrishna said:
"Bhakti is the only essential thing. One obtains love of God by constantly chanting His name and singing His glories.
God reveals Himself to a devotee who feels drawn to Him by the combined force of these three attractions: the attraction of worldly possessions for the worldly man, the child’s attraction for its mother, and the husband’s attraction for the chaste wife. If one feels drawn to Him by the combined force of these three attractions, then through it one can attain Him.
      3. *Raja Yoga* - meditation overcomes a scattered unfocused mind.
      Sri Ramakrishna said:
"By meditating on God in solitude the mind acquires knowledge, dispassion, and devotion. But the very same mind goes downward if it dwells in the world.
As it is very difficult to gather the mustard seeds that escape out of a torn package and are scattered in all directions, so it is not a very easy affair to in gather and concentrate the mind which runs after worldly things in diverse directions."
The final step of the ladder is the problem of ignorance.
      Sri Ramakrishna said:
" A person cannot see God on account of the barrier of māyā. Just look: I am creating a barrier in front of my face with this towel. Now you can’t see me, even though I am so near. Likewise, God is the nearest of all, but we cannot see Him on account of this covering of māyā."
If we study Vedanta and listen carefully, reflect on the teachings and meditate on these truths with such a purified mind, the truth will be revealed in a flash.
      Sri Ramakrishna said:
"If the matches are dry, you get a spark by striking only one of them. But if they are damp, you don’t get a spark even if you strike fifty. You only waste matches. Similarly, if your mind is soaked in the pleasure of worldly things, in 'lust and gold’, then
God-Consciousness will not be kindled in you. You may try a thousand times, but all your efforts will be futile. But no sooner does attachment to worldly pleasure dry up than the spark of God flashes forth.”
TRAILOKYA: “What is the way to dry up the craving for worldly pleasure?”
MASTER: “Pray to the Divine Mother with a longing heart. Her vision dries up all craving for the world and completely destroys all attachment to ‘lust and gold.'"
To sum up - Adhikari is a student who is willing to transform themselves in order to manifest their inner divinity.

In answer to the second part of your question about Samskaras, Swami Vivekananda said that:
"Samskara can be translated very nearly by "inherent tendency". Using the simile of a lake for the mind, every ripple, every wave that rises in the mind, when it subsides, does not die out entirely, but leaves a mark and a future possibility of that wave coming out again. This mark, with the possibility of the wave reappearing, is what is called Samskara. Every work that we do, every movement of the body, every thought that we think, leaves such an impression on the mind-stuff, and even when such impressions are not obvious on the surface, they are sufficiently strong to work beneath the surface, subconsciously. What we are every moment is determined by the sum total of these impressions on the mind. What I am just at this moment is the effect of the sum total of all the impressions of my past life. This is really what is meant by character; each man's character is determined by the sum total of these impressions. If good impressions prevail, the character becomes good; if bad, it becomes bad."
As the result of having wholesome and beneficial samskaras, we become interested in spiritual life and study Vedanta😊

Question: in both examples, namely digging a canal or carving a statue, a person knows very clearly from the very beginning what he or she wants to achieve and how the ultimate result should be/look like. While embarking on the path of yoga, does one also know what is the ultimate result except for the kaivalya? Even though the idea of kaivalya sounds attractive, it is still ambiguous.

    • @joytothewild
      @joytothewild ปีที่แล้ว +2

Kaivalya means when our highest self that is pure consciousness is realised through meditation. It is not knowable beforehand because it is not an object. You cannot grasp pure consciousness, everything cognizable is an object illuminated by consciousness, consciousness itself is not cognizable. But it can be experienced in a state of kaivalya. The verse 2 and 3 of yoga Sutra says: yoga is the cessation of the modifications of the mind, then the seer (consciousness) is established in its natural self. Realisation of that through meditation is kaivalya.
