I still tear up after 2 years. My father passed in Jan 2020 and he's the one who played this song for me on our stereo. My dad loved music and my family usually had good sound systems. I remember the days of listening to rush, boston, pink floyed, janis joplin, the beatles, led zepplin, among many other greats brings back so many memories of my dad setting me down and bus looking at album covers and him telling me the names of the songs. His favorites were villa strangliato and 2112.
I remember primus touring with rush when I was in 6th/7th grade around 1991 and at that time it made no sense to me at all why a cool band like primus would be playing with some nerds like rush 😂😂😂 Once I started playing guitar it worked itself out
Thanks for making me feel real old ! No I saw Farewell to Kings tour in Chicago 3 nights in a row close up And now I'm in 9th row this next week in StPete with 50 yr best friend that was with me in 1977
My favorite Rush song. Remember getting the album and listening to Xanadu over and over when I was in 8th-9th grade. Primus did Rush proud on this one. Well done gentlemen…Well done indeed 👍🤘
I saw RUSH for the first time in the mid seventies and several times after that . I took my son to see.them twice ( their last two tours...I'm so glad I did . I miss them so much , at least I have most of their albums . RIP Neil ...
Hah!, can’t stop thinking of the girl that was stoked to get asked to go see Primus by a guy she’s been interested in (Rush is ‘hot girl repellent’, in case you are new to their work, and Xanadu of all gems, hah!!!!) Probably some of the coolest, smartest, and best people you have ever met, Rush fans, for whatever reason, are generally going to be the people who would rather watch star trek or twilight zone re-runs instead of the Oscars, Kardashians, or anything mainstream or “cool”. I was fortunate enough to see Primus open for Rush back in high school and the recent passing and life story of Neil was so truly sad, this video is heart warming as I’m sure these guys miss Rush as much as any of us. Thanks for posting this vid, you rock!
I have never heard anyone but Rush play Xanadu. I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to cover this song. Les and the boys knocked it out of the ball park though. Nailed it. Nicely done! 🤙
My favorite song in the universe since I heard it live in 78(?). It's the song that turned me from a RUSH fan to a Rabid RUSH fan! Well done, guys! Well done!
Man l respect this band so much ..Thank you for this tribute to Rush! But my memory has to do with beaver, car crashes and fishing back in them day's. L Ya
That was completely awesome and it brought a tear to my eye and I am not joking. Having been to nearly every Rush tour since 1982, I really miss those guys.
I knew Les cited Rush as one of his biggest influences, but he takes it to a totally different level here. To pay homage to one of THE most technically sound bands ever shows how much he wants the world to hear and enjoy their music. Kudos to Primus for pulling this off!
What an amazing job with one of Rush's complex masterpieces...As a fellow musician, I know what it takes to keep this masterpiece tight..You better have your "A" game...:)...Primus showed me a side I hadn't seen...I always knew their "waters run deep" ...So killer to introduce young people to One of the greatest bands in music history...over 4 decades of loving their music... MURRAY FISHMASS!
pretty cool, a tribute to fairwell to kings, rush's best work imho. saw them a few times back in the day, this was very good, especially enjoyed larry lalonde's playing, nailed alex's amazing work.
Saw'em in Berkeley on their home turf. Absolutely crushed it. Chills up my spine when Larry started in with that repeating Lydian riff. Also, twin double-neck attack (Rick & Gibson, no less) FTW! This album was life itself to me at age 10.
As both a Rush and Primus fan, I gotta say, they *nailed* this, right down the little details like the bell tree. If I didn't know this was Primus, I would swear I'm listening to the Exit Stage Left version.
Very good guys. Rush (A farewell to kings) with Max Webster (High class in borrowed shoes) was one of my favourite Toronto concerts CNE August 23, 1977. This song also got me through grade 12 poetry, it was the poem Ode to Kubla Khan along with numerous other Rush classics. Cheers
Holy hot damn, I would have loved to be in the crowd for this! The idea of Primus performing such an inspirational and powerful album sounds weird, maybe ridiculous...but Primus handled it exactly how Primus handles things like this. I'm sure Neil is looking at this in the afterlife, smiling and knowing he helped make this happen. It's no secret that Les Claypool respects Geddy and the rest of Rush, so seeing him and the band put in the effort to make an entire tour based on playing Rush songs is fucking amazing.
Thanks for sharing, love Primus & this was a surprisingly well-done cover of a difficult classic Rush song!! (Of course, nothing will EVER compare to the amazing trifecta of Rush💔)👏🏼💓✌🏼
Who can cover this? I've heard other bands attempt it, and even somewhat emulate it. However, these guys actually played the song....in time, with proper tone, and even got the visuals right. Amazing. Primus is awesome.
1977, The Tower Theater, Philadelphia - my first concert - ticket cost me $5.50, it said Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Rush, I thought there would be 3 bands, it was TP's debut - I was 15, we showed up in a 1971 AMC Gremlin - what a night, still my favorite Rush album. Nobody can quite pull off an Alex Lifeson solo but this is badass!🙂 Thanks for posting.
This was NOT a 5 minute rehearsal to get this nailed down, well played lads.amazed and impressed.i worked tirelessly for weeks on end to nail a rush track with an old band of mine.their music aint a piece of pie...the timing can get you in a flash.much appreciated.
i don't know how very old this makes me however i saw Primus once as the opening act for a metal band. that was the only time i got to see them. they blew up as i thought they were going to.
A gloriously outstanding attempt at the Rush masterpiece, which NO other group would attempt!! Primus sucks and does what NO other group could because they are outstanding musicians. I applaud the group for not even attempting, but for doing the piece justice.
Yeah, just imagine what sort of legacy Primus could have if they wrote and performed music up the level of their raw talent. Their songs are demented bullshit in my opinion, but they certainly can play.
The best “Rush” concert I’ve been to. They nailed the whole album from front to back. So great to see them is a small club (The Coca-Cola Roxy in ATL).
This a good performance, it also illustrates just how amazing Rush was musically. If you listen to the Exit Stage Left version and compare it to this, you immediately hear how incredible the performance was by Rush.
Absolutely - and along with Jacob’s Ladder and La Villa, those three performances on Exit Stage Left are some of the most legendary live version “epics” of all time. I’d add Freewill from Exit to that as well…
It's not just about all the right notes in all the right order and combinations... It's about timing..., phrasing..., & dynamics... Those are the reasons that great symphony orchestras are led by great conductors instead of blinking metronomes... While I highly respect that they could get all the right notes in the right order and combinations..., which is no small feat in and of itself... And I also highly appreciate the period correct instruments... I mean, a 1275 & a 4080 side by side on a stage is just liquid cool... However..., the phrasing..., the ebb & flow of the time..., and the contrasts between delicate & explosive..., well it's like they just phoned it in..., kinda' just plodding through it... Just compare the volume swell guitar intro..., this performance..., and the Exit Stage Left cut..., (album OR the video recorded on a different night...), the way Alex speeds up and slows down..., almost the way a bird would speed up while swooping down to the ground, and slow down when coasting a bit after flying upwards..., or the way a rollercoaster speeds up at the bottom of a loop..., but slows down at the top of a loop... And the way Alex slides into the next note..., the intensity and speed of his vibrato..., and how he varies them as he goes... It's extremely expressive..., and really makes you feel it... This video...? Nope...
Yes John. All of that taste and style is what makes Rush actual artists not just musicians. There are loads of technicians out there who can play the parts exactly. That isn’t hard at all for a pro level player. It’s the artistry that makes it magic. And the originator will always capture that better than anyone copying the parts. In Rush’s case, the artistry is at a very high level, especially with Alex, which is on clear display in Xanadu. He’s one of the most artistic players of any genre anywhere, and doesn’t really get enough credit for that.

It brought me to the verge of tears, is all I can say. Thank you Primus. Rest in peace, Neil. Long live Alex and Geddy.
Greatest Rush song ever!! I've fought with my brother in law over this song which I believe pound for pound is better than Stairway!!!! Kudos to Les and the boys for this fantastic version!! And yes super difficult song to pull off!!
Part of me disagrees. That part says Cygnus X1.
Watching this tribute video, that part of me can shut the hell up.
I happen to agree with you, and the Lerxst solo at the end is one for the ages
Your brother in law is an idiot if he doesn't recognize Xanadu makes Stairway look like Twinkle Twinkle...
@Antioch One of, indeed..."Science, like nature, must also be tamed..." Have you checked out Tyler Warren's permanent Waves cover...It's very profound for any rush heads... th-cam.com/video/GD5Xo1Tkh4U/w-d-xo.html
@@godbluffvdgg thank you!!!
A fine rendition, gentlemen! Brought tears to my eyes.
Man I can remember hearing certain songs by Rush and it's a feeling of putting your finger into a golden soul
Tremendous respect for this tribute. I know Les was a big fan. Keeping this music alive is greatly appreciated. 🙏🏻
I remember primus touring with rush when I was in 6th/7th grade around 1991 and at that time it made no sense to me at all why a cool band like primus would be playing with some nerds like rush 😂😂😂 Once I started playing guitar it worked itself out
Saw them together on that tour in Portland Oregon. It was fantastic.
I saw them together in '94 in Chicago. One of the best double bills I've ever seen.
I saw them in Milwaukee for that tour
Thanks for making me feel real old ! No
I saw Farewell to Kings tour in Chicago 3 nights in a row close up
And now I'm in 9th row this next week in StPete with 50 yr best friend that was with me in 1977
My favorite Rush song.
Remember getting the album and listening to Xanadu over and over when I was in 8th-9th grade.
Primus did Rush proud on this one.
Well done gentlemen…Well done indeed 👍🤘
Saw this last year. It was my first Covid show.. It was the most needed show I have ever seen.. And it rocked!
Wow amazing!! Thanks to the guy who posted this and Primus for having the balls and skill to play this that good!! Bravo
That was absolutely amazing. Their musicianship is impeccable.
They even nailed the visuals - Pretty close to how I always imagined it.
*_A Tribute To Kings Tour where Primus performs "A Farewell to Kings" from start-to-finish is ongoing out 2022._*
i got my ticket for April 15 first night of the tour!
Blew me away at Berkeley show. Wish my creaking 54 yr bones could've been down in the mosh pit. Moshing to Rush was a sight to behold
Rush classics will never fade away.
They are timeless 🎶👍
I always loved Rush, I always love Primus. THANKS SO MUCH! Awesome
One of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite bands.... Outstanding!!!
Brought tears to my eyes. Well done boys!
I saw RUSH for the first time in the mid seventies and several times after that . I took my son to see.them twice ( their last two tours...I'm so glad I did . I miss them so much , at least I have most of their albums . RIP Neil ...
Might be THE best Rush song, and that’s saying quite a bit. Glad they do it justice.
My fave Rush tune 😀
And somehow the keyboards are SPOT ON! Fantastic!
Farewell to kings is a monumental part of my life. Great job guys.
Very cool that they would play this. Love the way the audience obviously appreciated it too.
The Best rendition ever heard! Bless You Guys!! Bold as Love!! Miss Rush, Bravo Primus!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼☝🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I saw this tour in OKC. They did a really good job with this.
Friend told me that he saw them a few months ago and as an encore they played the entire 37 minute album.
Great vid. Thanks.
Well done!
I saw Primus with Rush way back in the day. Thanks guys, much appreciated!
Man l respect this band so much ..Thank you for this tribute to Rush! But my memory has to do with beaver, car crashes and fishing back in them day's. L Ya
This is a masterful job on an impossible song both to play and to sing. Bravo!!!!
The respect and homage that primus has given to rush over all these years is awesome
Beyond bloody wonderful!! Finding this made my day and lifted my spirits as only Primus and Rush ever could.
That was completely awesome and it brought a tear to my eye and I am not joking. Having been to nearly every Rush tour since 1982, I really miss those guys.
I only want to add a tiny bit more to the mountain that's already here: they maintained all the musicality of the original.
The solo was AMAZING! Great job, Primus!
Listening to this made me appreciate Rush even more.
Sublime versión!, gracias por compartirla!!
Great job emulating Alex Lifeson's tone.
If any band was to do this it should be Primus.
One of my all time most favorite songs.
Wow! Great cover. I really appreciate when I hear legit, established bands cover Rush. Their music should never die!!
pretty cool, a tribute to fairwell to kings, rush's best work imho. saw them a few times back in the day, this was very good, especially enjoyed larry lalonde's playing, nailed alex's amazing work.
I was at the Farewell to Kings Raleigh, NC show. AMAZING!!!
Saw this tour, not many bands can do Rush justice, but Primus crushed it. One of the best shows ever!
There will never be a 1-2 punch of albums like Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres! Well done, Primus!!
I was going "Will Les play a twin neck Rickenbacker?" and sure enough...
Chills. Such a good job covering such a GREAT song.
First time I ever heard of Primus & seen them was when they opened for Rush in 92, I think it was, at Chappel Hill N.C.
Saw'em in Berkeley on their home turf. Absolutely crushed it. Chills up my spine when Larry started in with that repeating Lydian riff. Also, twin double-neck attack (Rick & Gibson, no less) FTW! This album was life itself to me at age 10.
The Gibson is Alex’s he loaned it to them!
Excellent job!!! Thank you, Primus for keeping the spirit of Rush alive. One of my favorite Rush songs!
Neil may not have found xanadu but I'm sure he approves from wherever he is watching from. Good job boys.
Saw Rush play this on their A Farewell to Kings tour many years ago - great memories!
As both a Rush and Primus fan, I gotta say, they *nailed* this, right down the little details like the bell tree. If I didn't know this was Primus, I would swear I'm listening to the Exit Stage Left version.
Primus are touring covering the entire Rush epic A Farewell To Kings as part of the show ; mad respect; this is actually surprisingly good...
Holy Balls!
i have not ever heard any other band even try to play this song. AMAZANG! Not an easy feat. Can tell much respect for RUSH.
Fantastic footage! Wish I could see the whole tour
Rest in Peace Professor ... Thanks Primus !!
You know you’re badass when other Great bands cover your songs
Thanks for sharing, love Primus & this was a surprisingly well-done cover of a difficult classic Rush song!! (Of course, nothing will EVER compare to the amazing trifecta of Rush💔)👏🏼💓✌🏼
Wow! Absolutely nailed it. That is an insanely difficult song and Primus nailed it. So impressed!
Who can cover this? I've heard other bands attempt it, and even somewhat emulate it.
However, these guys actually played the song....in time, with proper tone, and even got the visuals right.
Amazing.
Primus is awesome.
Saw this concert in Columbus OH. Was my first ever concert, had a great time. Worth every cent!
You know Primus is doing a cover when they play good music.
Farting in public is what you were born to do.
Im a Primus fan but this was fucking funny
1977, The Tower Theater, Philadelphia - my first concert - ticket cost me $5.50, it said Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Rush, I thought there would be 3 bands, it was TP's debut - I was 15, we showed up in a 1971 AMC Gremlin - what a night, still my favorite Rush album. Nobody can quite pull off an Alex Lifeson solo but this is badass!🙂 Thanks for posting.
I came as a Primus fan… I left as a Rush fan! Simply magical🥰🙏🏽
This was NOT a 5 minute rehearsal to get this nailed down, well played lads.amazed and impressed.i worked tirelessly for weeks on end to nail a rush track with an old band of mine.their music aint a piece of pie...the timing can get you in a flash.much appreciated.
I ABSOLUTELY ADIMRE THIS PERFORMANCE of One of My MANY GREATEST Songs!!!
i don't know how very old this makes me however i saw Primus once as the opening act for a metal band. that was the only time i got to see them. they blew up as i thought they were going to.
Big Rush fan. loved the video, has inspired me to listen to Primus more, looking forward to exploring more of heir music, thank you.
WOW!!! I knew these guys had skills, but damn!
Such chills. Sometimes it feels like the world might be ok.
It's not.
Best Rush cover band ever, nicely done 👍🏻
Primus is playing entire Farewell to Kings album on current tour, can't wait!
This a good performance, it also illustrates just how amazing Rush was musically. If you listen to the Exit Stage Left version and compare it to this, you immediately hear how incredible the performance was by Rush.
Agreed...
