Will Speaker Johnson prove to be the worst sort of "Christian" leader?

  • Speaker of the House Mike Johnson debuts on the second tier of the MAGA Christian Lowerarchy - but will he STAY there? He already has a lot to answer for regarding his efforts to spread the Big Lie and overturn the 2020 election, but his actions toward Ukraine, in service of Donald Trump, are beyond comprehension. He still has a chance to redeem himself - but will he?

I highly recommend this article by David Frum in the Atlantic from December: "They do it for Trump: Behind the GOP's shifting excuses for abandoning Ukraine". I read it after I made the video, but it checks out. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/12/republicans-congress-ukraine-aid-trump/676374/

I am with you. We have let this get out of hand. Perhaps this is our generation’s struggle, the crucible through which we all must pass to either come out stronger together or be broken apart. I pray we can pull together.
I fear for my two little girls. What world have we created for them? God grant me the strength to protect them, and the wisdom to guide them down a better path than I have taken.
For my part, I have made the decision to not let fear or prejudice rule my actions any longer. I am putting away my phone more often and being present for my family. I even went to the park today and spoke with a stranger. How odd is it that I feel proud of something so simple?

    • @culturefaithandpolitics

It's a strong accusation from me, I know, but all of his words and behavior point that way. He's made many comments about how he'd end the war immediately if he's re-elected, which could only happen if he sells out Ukraine to Putin. He has made so many comments over the years about his admiration for Vladimir Putin that I could simply say he wants Putin to win, but I think it goes deeper - he wants Ukraine to lose because his first impeachment was all about him withholding weapons from Ukraine that had already been approved by Congress, unless Ukraine "did him a favor" by announcing an investigation into Joe Biden - who at that time was presumed to be a strong candidate against Trump. There have been right-wing events that I've seen where the speakers are adamantly pro-Putin, as well, because they see him as the protector of Christian culture against the more "liberal" Ukraine. So there's a lot there. I'm sure others could answer it more fully. Thanks for asking.

One of the main backers of Putin is the Russian Orthodox Church and in particular Patriarch Kirill (think of him as the Russian equivalent of Pope) who himself is an ex-KGB officer and who has issued official statements (the equivalent of Papal Bulls) saying this war on Ukraine is a ‘holy war’ ordered by God. The Russian state and the Orthodox church have a parasitic codependency - the only legal Christian church denomination in Russia is the Orthodox. Famously Lenin called the church ‘the opiate of the people’ and he was not referring as such to Christian belief but rather the fact that then as now the official church worked hand in glove with the Tsar to keep the people in ignorance and superstition.
For the past couple of decades Putin and Kirill have worked hand in glove to supposedly bring ‘family values’ to Russia doing such things as banning all LGBT rights in Russia and many other similar steps so both are immensely popular in fundamentalist Christian circles in the US.

If I were a tad more cynical and had been alive in Jesus’ time and you asked me who would still be around 2,000 years later, I would have said the Sadducees. The Pharisees were just nonpolitical, small-community centered (weak); the Zealots would be destroyed (backed the wrong horse); the humble service of the Christians would end up with martyrdom (stupid losers). But the Sadducees combination of conservative religion for the masses (the Temple) and realpolitik (dealing with the Romans aristocrat to aristocrat) - THAT would be effective.
