Btw they don’t really “tour an album”. It’s more like they throw in some new ones here and there. These are special though. They have a “microtonal section” of the show where they just do four or five random microtonal songs in one string.
If you look at the liner notes for this album, you’ll see that some of the extra percussion you mentioned is actually field recordings of heavy machinery from Joey. Samples include MRI machine, hydraulic hammer, drawbridge, chainsaw, nail gun, and angle grinder!
funny you mention rowing a ship, as I forget where/when it started, but at live shows sometimes a chunk of the crowd will all sit down and start rowing in unison... it's pretty wild to see in person..ha ha
The moment we knew this was EXACTLY what you wanted was Doom City. You wanted it to hang on that sludgy riff so bad, we all INSTANTLY thought of Hungry Wolf of Fate and KGLW.
We all knew from the moment you liked the microtonal from rattlesnake you would’ve gotten to this moment and absolutely loved this song. The hype was real. I’m glad you think this album is just so solid.
this song is amazing, I saw them in columbus last year and during the microtonal section there was a circle pit going with people chanting BANANA TIME during both kglw intro and kglw outro
Yeah this is by far their best metal song not on rats nest or petro, and one of their best overall imo. Perfect transition into rats nest even if it’s stylistically much different.
Hey man if you want more info on this song and a few others from the kg and lw albums seek out the tape notes podcast with Stu. He talks about Joey adding all the machinery samples etc. As previously mentioned. But what you might like is how he envisaged the solo of this song. I wont explain it well. But in his head the time signature builds throughout the solo. Starting at 1/4 to 21/4. So way more goin on than you might think. Plus its a massive reccomend in terms of production etc anyway. You'd get a lot from it. Keep up the good work
Brilliant reaction as always! So looking forward to your infest the rats nest reaction! I know you said you don’t pay attention to lyrics, but IFTRN has one of the best storylines that King GIZZ had written and even the bits you do pick up I think will be intersting in linking to to the over arching story. Hellfire!
Since you've finished all the micro tonal stuff I would highly recommend checking out a live version of rattlesnake at some point. I'd love to see your reaction but even if you don't put it up on here you definitely have to check it out. Even just rattlesnake rattlesnake sounds a lot harder plus the change ups is just fantastic
It's funny you talk about them not being able to be replaced. Apparently when they first formed the band the concept was to have a band where the members are completely interchangeable and come and go as they please. The original 7 were the ones that kept coming back and the rest is history.
Haha -about that "gear" sound, there was a little claymation looking 'commercial' for the album when it came out and it utilized this song/that sound. It's a funny little piece of work.
ecstatic to see your reaction to ITRN. the music videos and the live set on KEXP are both great ways to experience the album, the only song that you’ll have to listen to the studio version for is Superbug, but it’s another doomy song which is great. also as someone else said we know you don’t like reading lyrics, but even if you just glance at them after finishing the song, i think it’ll do a lot for your enjoyment of the album. it’s the best story king gizz have ever written and it would be a shame for you to miss out on it.
I think K.G.L.W. is one of their best metal tracks. Microtonal doom prog metal. Just incredible. There'a always been a doomy feeling in the microtonal albums (Doom City and Nuclear Fusion from FMB for example), but not much metal until This track. A good friend of mine who really doesn't care for most metal (the only metal band she listens to being Primus, and she only started listening to then recently) considers it a 10/10 album. It was even her all time favorite album for a while. That's high praise for someone who doesn't like most metal. Just so you know, the music video for Planet B (first track on Rats Nest) is mixed differently than what you'll hear on the album. It's not like Blame It On The Weather or Pleura which use completely different takes, but it's less "crunchy" (I guess) in the music video than it is on the album, and the bass is a bit flat (as in not bass-y). It's not really a big deal though. You'll love it.
I'm sure the metal community is somewhat insular, and a bunch of aussie nerds who dabble in metal can be as good as they are and still outsiders in the genre, I can understand why they're kept at arms length
The KGLW lyrics may be a little on the nose but at least you can hear what they're singing for once lmao! Personally my favourite metal tune they've done, I'm not keen on Petro which is not a popular opinion lol. Definitely agree with you that LW is the strongest of the microtonal albums, seems like they're more comfortable with it by then.
You're now warmed up for ITRN 😁. Are going to skip Self-Immolate because you already did it a long time ago? Consider doing it together with the previous track (Venusian 2) before closing the album. Btw, you'll still find some microtonal riffs in some tracks you'll do.
Cavs asked which time signature the song was in.
Stu said yes.

Literal heavy metal, thats dope as fuck
Angle grinder, a welcome friend
and Cookie plays "Hammer and Anvil" haha
And if I’m not mistaken, Stu said the album was almost complete and ready and that it was Joey’s idea at the last second. So sick
Angle grinder, a welcome friend, Dorothy’s end!
Being retrospective, it's crazy how ITRN it's gonna be your 10th KG album in the dive, it feels like last week that you first reacted to Gila Monster!
funny you mention rowing a ship, as I forget where/when it started, but at live shows sometimes a chunk of the crowd will all sit down and start rowing in unison... it's pretty wild to see in person..ha ha

100%
As a guitar player myself, playing in this scale without microtonal instruments, is fun as hell.
We all knew from the moment you liked the microtonal from rattlesnake you would’ve gotten to this moment and absolutely loved this song. The hype was real. I’m glad you think this album is just so solid.
I've waited a long time for this moment.
this song is amazing, I saw them in columbus last year and during the microtonal section there was a circle pit going with people chanting BANANA TIME during both kglw intro and kglw outro
"Banana time" Hahaha that's a Band-Maid thing
this is what ive been waiting for, smiled real hard as soon as that first riff hit you hahaha i knew you'd fuck with this one
When a band sticks together, Band-Maid comes to mind.
Yeah this is by far their best metal song not on rats nest or petro, and one of their best overall imo. Perfect transition into rats nest even if it’s stylistically much different.
It’s primordial and like a all to arms for fans to be stoked

Came to mention this too! Dope listen 🤘
All caught up! I agree, this song is sick. See you on Mars...
I'm pretty sure that performance is from the day LW released, this was when hype levels were at 1000%

Glad you loved this one! Seeing this as a closer at the caverns this summer was truly mind blowing
Can’t wait to see your reaction to ITRN

Gotta be the red rocks 2022 version so fun.
@@ashleymenegon6319 superb version, was gonna mention my favourite bit but don't wanna spoiler it for anyone who's not heard it
Yeah we knew you were gonna love this one lol
They need to drop a doom album already. They're clearly good at it!
It's funny you talk about them not being able to be replaced. Apparently when they first formed the band the concept was to have a band where the members are completely interchangeable and come and go as they please. The original 7 were the ones that kept coming back and the rest is history.
This guy still somehow can't pronounce my name smh.. he has to be a venusian i guess. Have fun with Rats Nest!

Fawk yeah... I want a whole microtonal doom Gizz album
microtonal doom and industrial would be awesome.

Please Mr. DaRiff, do a short detour and do Willoughbys Beach

Play this shit over some The Temple of Doom. lol. This is so heavy and fantastic.
Great live video choice for the song, this looks and sounds great and as good as the studio.
Once they got rid of drummer 2 they all became essential. Although it bums me Lucas records the least. He’s great live.
