    Thank you for this video. My hubby and I finally made a concrete vessel and got bored and painted them lol. Finally got the seal and did that but didn’t know we should do more than one coat. Yesterday I went and made other concrete vessels and made our first candle with the coco bright (in a tin can). I was so intimidated with the wax but realized doing colored concrete was more complicated lol but I am soooooo freaking proud. Also, I burned the candle for hours (almost 12 hrs) and it only burned 1/4 of the wax 🤗🤗🤗. Thank you for sharing your journey because if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t had started this. ❤️

    • @calafiacandleco

      Hi there! I do have a few recent videos demonstrating the quick dip. It can be a little tricky. You do have to keep an eye on them after about 10 minutes or so and dab off any drips. I like to carefully pick up the bottom of the jar when it's dry enough to touch, and dab around the lip of the vessel.

      Thanks for watching! Definitely don't put concrete down the drain. I wipe out as much as I can from the bowl while it's still wet with paper towels, and then I spray out the residual with a hose in my backyard. I just hose it off in the dirt. I've also heard of people waiting for it to completely dry and then they crack it out of the bowl. Hope that helps!

I went to stick the wick and it wouldn't stick with the sticker that is for the wick. I also tried the silicone glue. I thought maybe I should glue the wick in the center first and then shield it with the varnish. Still it didn't stick.....It's like the absorbed the glue. Either the sticker or the silicone glue the clear rod (silicone glue gun) Do you know which way I can glue the wick? I'm trying to think of another way.....Any advice welcome

    That’s something I didn’t give any thought to. I found Brewmill Candle company first when I decided to look into starting a small candle business. I just ordered the Rutlands concrete sealer like she uses 🤷‍♀️ It costs 14 cents per jar & that seems reasonable to me. It must work. She has a refill program on her concrete candles. There’s a guy (a little too animated for my liking) “up” something. He uses a paintbrush & applies some sort of sealer inside & out and it looks awful! I like that you only do the inside!!

    • @calafiacandleco
      @calafiacandleco  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I prefer the outside unsealed, but the one con about that is I have to pour very carefully because if I spill any wax on the outside, it stains and you can't get it out. But it's a risk I'm willing to take because I love the look of the raw concrete on the outside! I tried Rutlands in the beginning, but couldn't get it to work right for me. Hope it goes well for you!

      @@calafiacandleco We’ll see. I just sealed the first ones today. The first two I did a water bath for 24 hours. They don’t look nice at all. The second two look so much better. I ran them through the Rutlands 4 times. Once an hour. I’ll know tomorrow how they look. It’s a fun learning process even with the fails. I’ll have plenty of tester vessels 😂 I tried using mica powders today, but I didn’t know how, so that didn’t turn out so well 🥴

      It will vary for everyone depending on your location. For example, the jars will dry faster in drier weather areas. I personally have been waiting 5-7 days to seal, and then at least 24 hours before pouring wax. You can also weigh a jar every day, and when the weight starts to stay consistent, you know it's dry and ready to seal.

    New to concrete jars for candlemaking here. So a sealer is an absolute necessity? I've made several jars with cementall in silicone molds and they are super smooth to the touch, no discernable grain or porous texture. Have not experienced wet spots after a week of candles curing. Perhaps seepage takes much more time? Or occurs more on grainy/more porous concrete mixes?

      Hello! In my 2.5 years of experience doing this, I've found sealer to be a necessity. It may take some time, but the wax/fragrance oil eventually will seep through. Despite the vessels appearing smooth to the human eye, concrete is a very porous medium.

      That is a good question. I've seen some people use a sealer, and some people don't. I'm not really sure what the best option is.

      I would advise reading the safety data sheets and reaching out to the companies to ask if they are safe to use for this purpose. That's what I did and how I landed on Earth Safe. Someone shared on the facebook group yesterday another safe option from Ecoprocote called "Acri-Soy Penetrating Sealer". The company shared it is safe to use for candle jars. It seems to be a much more affordable option. I am probably going to give it a try when I run out of earth safe.

    I bought this sealer but the high gloss finish im not fond of. While testing ive been burning my candles down to the very bottom ...and the sealer peels off the concrete towards the end. Im still looking for something that doesn't peel

    • @calafiacandleco
      @calafiacandleco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm. How long do you let your vessels sit before sealing? When I tried this sealer for the first time, it was peeling off on some vessels. I found out it was because I wasn’t letting the vessels dry out all the way before sealing. Nancy advised it was the moisture trying to come out of the concrete that was making the sealer peel. Now I wait at least 3 full days before sealing and haven’t had that issue again.

    • @tradergirl7067
      @tradergirl7067 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calafiacandleco it varies sometimes they sit for days and sometimes maybe 24 hrs at the shortest time. I will see about letting them dry longer. Thanks for the tip. Your jars are awesome!

    • @calafiacandleco
      @calafiacandleco  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tradergirl7067 yeah give it a try and see! Since the sealer is water based and there’s water in the vessel, if it’s not completely dry it just keeps the moisture in.

      Hello, it depends on what the weather conditions are like for you. In drier climates, the jars will cure faster than in cold, damp climates. A good way to tell is to weigh a jar every day. When the weight starts to stay the same, you know they are dry and ready to be sealed.
