Great interview Willy - I finally feel like I’m starting to get a realistic and nuanced sense of the of the war, the politics, the people, and the very long road to peace and stability ahead for Ukraine. It’s clear that whatever it takes for either side to win this war, winning the peace (two likely very different scenarios for Russia and Ukraine) will be no less difficult.
Nah mate. Russia has got this.

Big respect to Gibby for being as truthful as he can without risking his own life. And bigger respect to you Will for interviewing him and letting him speak without interruption. I have rellos who have served and what Gibby says sounds very much like their experiences. They also mentioned "just doing my job", which is essentially what was said during the Nuremberg Trials. It's a difficult conundrum when it's your leaders who are making the decisions

@willyOAM "Slava Natzie" translates "Glory to the Nation" (great work and golden guests you have!!)
As a ukrainain I can agree, but sadly in the same it matters who yells it.
You can't help but link both words when you see people with actual nazi symbols on them, screaming those words that sound similiar to the word "nazi"
And generally there does exist an unpleasant background in Ukraine in regards to nazi worshipers.
Not many, but it's as in every country.

This was definitely one of the best interviews you have done so far. Gibby was refreshingly candid and very detailed and organized in his recounting of events. He did a great job of bringing up the challenges of the fight there the corroborate with what others have shared.

Ukraine sounds really racist and he just takes a glass half full approach.
As far as restricting him to base, I see the opsec rationale for that. Since there are so few black guys in Ukraine, if he's identified as a soldier, it becomes impossible for him to put on civvies and go into town without being recognized as such, so where he is means his unit is not far behind. I mean, sux for Gibby, but I see a rationale for it.
Yea people may see that as being racist but it does make sense. Eastern Europe is like Africa or Korean where it’s just one race of people that make up the country so you stand out so easy being a black man in Eastern Europe. It’s Russian drones and spies everywhere.

Yep, sitting here realising my country is on the wrong side of history.
@@bendoubleu7516 Russia has always been on the wrong side of history.
Good interview. The last part about about the Ukraine army still being essentially a Soviet style army. Push comes to shove it reverts to Soviet style. Makes sense, and I've seen it happen in the battle field: Orders say, take that tree line, so when the tank in front of you gets blown up just go around it, advance, no retreat.
The Ukrainian military, who have been trained according to NATO standards, tell journalists in an interview that the benefit of this knowledge in real combat situations is close to zero. Because Ukraine does not have air superiority. Coming under enemy fire, a Ukrainian soldier cannot call for air support. Minefields lasting many kilometers. And it is not the Taliban in slippers and on mopeds who are fighting against Ukrainians, but a technologically equal opponent.
@@AndreyRadyukov I agree, your points about lack of full NATO arms and different army are valid. Ukraine can't fight all NATO tactics because as you pointed out they can't set the initial condition, air superiority. I've heard the complaint about NATO traininers being clueless about the extend of russian trenches and minefields. That IS a failure of NATO leadership for not coming up with new doctrine to suit conditions in Ukraine, and for not fully informing the instructors on the conditions in Ukraine and likely questions they would be facing.
But, there are lots of other things, tactics that Ukraine could/should adopt against the russians. Ukraine has already seen the Soviet style "meat" / human wave attacks don't work. But attacking russian positions with combined artillery and small units does work. Giving small unit commanders discretion gave them the breakthrough and advance in Kharkiv last fall.
@@joblo341 NATO instructors cannot teach Ukrainians how to fight effectively against Russia. The military doctrine of the NATO countries is designed for war with a deliberately weaker enemy. In a war with which there is no front with a length of 1000 kilometers. Against which, most likely, an offensive air operation will be carried out first. Where hundreds of American planes will destroy any resistance of enemy troops. And an American soldier will enter enemy territory when there is practically nothing to threaten him. This attitude to war among NATO soldiers and officers is formed from the moment they enter military service.
The Russian military is initially preparing for a war with an equal opponent. Land battles with which will take place on the fronts of thousands of kilometers. Since throughout its history, Russia has fought with Sweden, Turkey, Poland, France, and Germany on its western borders. Russians are good at fighting in this type of war. Unlike NATO countries, which are initially preparing for a different type of war.
You have watched Hollywood films in which stupid Russians arrange "meat" attacks. In reality, Russian officers are trying to protect the lives of their soldiers. You can see this by remembering the Ukrainian offensive a year ago near Kharkov and Kherson. Where the Russian troops retreated. We lost the occupied territories, but saved the lives of soldiers.
The use of artillery and small units is a tactic of the private military company Wagner. With the help of which they captured Bakhmut.
The Ukrainian army has no superiority in artillery over the Russian army. Therefore, attacking with small units, Ukraine lost more than 60,000 soldiers in three months and advanced several kilometers. Not having achieved the goals of their offensive. Therefore, Ukrainian tactics can hardly be considered successful.
The success of the Ukrainian army last year near Kharkov was due to numerical superiority from three to twenty times. And the lack of prepared defensive fortifications of the Russian army. As the Russian military say in their interviews with journalists - "Near Kharkov, the Ukrainian military had to try harder to find the Russian military. Because the distance between the nearest Russian units could be several kilometers of unprotected territory."
@@AndreyRadyukov Intersting perspective.
In general I agree with your high level view on the tactics the 2 sides use.
"Meat" attacks ... Sure some of the accounts could be propaganda, but some accounts strike me as believable.
@@joblo341 If you want to understand the thinking of the Russian military. I recommend you to watch the video of Konstantin Sivkov and Vladimir Trukhan.

great interview because of the great answers from Gibby. One thing I don't understand is why there are people in Slavic countries supporting nazies. Himmler said the Slaves are only good for working and only need to write their name and count to 10. So since my teens I have this question why would someone in a Slavic country like Russia, Ukraine Poland call him/herself a nazi? Only people with no knowledge of history or only van count to 4 would join them. I really don't get it. Why downgrade yourself? P.S. there are left, right , middle wings in every country.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend maybe? It's Slavic infighting, with Ukrainians hating Russians, who better to hate Russians than Nazis?
The idea of an ethnostate also appeals to people who feel like immigrants stole their country. They resent the Russians that live in their country. They blame them for their poverty. Racism exists everywhere, even among subtle shades of white, yellow or black.
The ideology is appealing. Some slavs (look into Stepan Bandera) might want to make their nation strong by emphasizing national pride and removing societal ailments like foreigners or minority populations (like Russians/Jews/Poles). German nazis successfully spread the ideology in Ukraine during WWII. The remnants are likely what we see today
@@FourEyedOwlRemoving societal ailments ?!!!!
Nazi means rasist. Ukrs have been told by their own government, that they are Europeans or basically white supremacist, while the Russians, with the rich history and culture, are subhumans, including their own citizens from Donbass. The same as rednecks in the US, believe in the rasist sh**t. Ukrs hate Russians more than Nazis hated jews and Gypsy. Good brainwashing propaganda, I'd admit!
@@rdsc.455 Well yeah, according to extreme nationalist in the 1940s. Non-traditionalist and minorities were to blame for why the country was sick/not prospering. They removed these "ailments" by putting them in camps (WW2 Germany) or just outright slaughter them (Wołyń 1943). I don't agree with any of this, but it's likely ingrained in their ideology.

Because Putin and co hate nazis right.
There is nuisance involved. The nazi or WN culture in Ukraine is just a smaller culture thats growing in ukraine right now, ukraine by the way being the poorest country in ukraine with not much access to western media. For ukraine, National Socialist rhetoric is their counter to soviet rhetoric., the soviets starved 10 million ukrainians in the holodomor after ww2. Hi everyone, thank you Willy and your Guest for the episode.
Was thrown unto this episode automatically after some other Ukraine coverage, so would not comment on anything besides one moment which stood out to me because it involves Ukrainian language I'm a bit familiar with.
I am a lithuanian, with quite a bit of Russian around me, and now with refugees, Ukrainian too. I'm not fluent in any of those,
but familiar enough to point out that greeting/slogan/shout "Слава нації!" is not a n.... saying, but literal "Glory to the Nation!", as ukrainian word for nation is "нація" and it is used in dative case in the slogan. So I believe it'd be a misunderstanding to interpret it as showing allegiance to that disgusting ideology. It is a saying from a nationalist worldview, as it involves the concept of a nation of course, but can be used by all sorts of people and does not contain radicalism in itself.
In my language "nation" has couple of words at least and one of them sounds identical to ukrainian one, including the damned sounding consonants.. Wouldn't raise a brow in any circles however.
Why is everything blurred now?
So he was a fuel specialist in the Marine Corps and went to Ukraine trying to give officer's advice how to conduct combat missions? Seems really odd I know Ukrainian officers and their military is definitely not a free for all and has regulations and order, maybe the foreign volunteer units are like this I don't know.
mine fields, lack of air support and use of helos and at times lack of artillery support is the reason why. nato doctrine is outdated on mine fields on the scale of millions of mines in ukraine. you drive armor and men up to that you are just a big artillery target.
Perhaps Ukraine needs more fuel specialists doing the strategic planning, as they can't F things up more than the Ukraine brass... Z beotch's
@@giovanni-ed7zq nato doctrine is based on air supremacy. if you have it, if you can ensure the security of the demining crews, the millions of mines are no longer such a big problem. when you don't have air supremacy, demining becomes an almost impossible task.
As is with any good leadership the sorting of advice is so much more important than where its coming from. Midtier leadership is where the battles are won and lost, I've been involved with many aspects of the people who are not aware of the butterfly flapping it's wings somewhere in the Amazon forest causing massive wildfires in Canada theory.
It's really sad when ego trumps commitment to the general cause and incompetence should be a "whistleblower" event.
Taking on conditions of dangerous levels and finding suitable workarounds is what makes the adrenaline run boys!
Stay within the bounds of capabilities, get the word out, and stay safe!
The job of every person in the military is to know basic infantry combat maneuvers/tactics
Dude you have to do an interview with someone from the DPR side of Ukraine, soldier or civillian. It will be an eye opener for many people.
No it won’t.
Because it doesn’t change anything.
I don't think it would be an eye opener. I have seen some interviews with people from D/LNR (in Russian and Ukrainian, barely any know English) and for the most part it's either the same stuff you'd hear in Russia from Russian soldiers, people who are pro-Ukraine and in hiding, and the last bunch who are scared shitless and are hiding from the draft. Two of those 3 above will never show their face unless they're already in Ukrainian controlled areas because the security service in the D/LNR is very vast and people have been killed for treason due to the things they say online (unlike in Russia or Ukraine, the D/LNR still practices executions). Keep in mind that most of the people I've seen interned are civilians so their stance will be a bit different from that of soldiers.
DPR is an anarchist state. It's even worse than any poor region in Ukraine or Russia. If you say at least something that's not close with idea to these people, they can surely execute you or at least make you silent.
In terms of this war, it doesn't matter as Russia already mislead 500 times with it's goals. Occupied and murdered regions that don't relate to DPR or LPR what so ever.
It was clear from the beginning, that it's a war with territorial gains and not some "liberation". Almost any type of weapons were used, except nuklear. Lots of casualties and lots of soldiers were used by russian goverment. If you think that around 200k - 1M soldiers is low, than you are clueless. It's a really big countity that can only compete with WW2 period. Very weak ideology of russian liberation on neighbour territory during peaceful era.
There are over 800 interviews with Muscovite POWs on TH-cam , 40 min-2.5 hour long each

6:03 you don’t become a soldier because your smart 😂
Keep these interviewers coming Willy! These are always my favorite hearing from the soldiers of Ukraine.
There is a sign on the cabin (У ) Educational transport 😂
how stupid is it to show video that is 98% blocked. Why bother?
25:30 - Yup, the US armed anyone who was willing to fight the Soviets during the Soviet-Afghan war, not caring how extreme they were and then only to have to go in there a few years later to try and disarm them again (and from how that war ended actually only ended up giving the more up to date weapons).
Glad to see this guy address it so honestly.
I mean it could mean a few things though. I don't think the US government haven't taken this into account at all. Why do you think the hesitancy in supplying more and better modern weapons? Arm them just enough to beat this enemy and not too strong so we can take them easier in the future.
Well, if they do have to go in there at a future point, luckily I am too old to be conscripted and far enough away to probably not have my country be involved. And if they do expand conscription's age range like Ukraine did now and I might just be so ticked off for having to go in and help clean up the US' mess that I might go out of my way to sabotage it. Might make me crazy enough to do things like mentioned at 16:26 Like to the point where pride in my country gets overshadowed by the stupidity of what they are getting involved in.
Even in the Afghan war the USA armed Ukrainian Nazis to fight the Soviets, you can find photos of Yaroslav Stetsko meeting with Mujahideen in the Oval Office.
part of the big WACL-ABN cluster of Nazis used to fight anti-communist conflicts that came from the USA absorbing the Nazi's Eastern Front intelligence arm to form the Bundeswehr under Reinhard Gehlen (and the Wolverine terrorist units used to execute strategies of tension in the USSR).
The "hesitation" has only be because they want to DRAAAAG it as long as posible with less as cost as posible.
Olygharch in washington know their abuse it getting more and more dificult to hide, people are at their limit, french revolution all over again.
So their try to .ind expending, WHILE still saphoning money, why you think the budget hasnt been accounted correctly BU DECADES?
Also, afghan fudge to get people "back in" fail, they need a NEW FEAR and a war to keep Defence expending going UP.
Is expecially notisable when each new adition is either to counter a russian action, or when ukrain show extensive failure.
Keep ukrain alive enough so russia can exaust itself by punching it.
Typical proxy war.
Very good interview Willy. You are seeking the truth.
