GWM Tank 300 Review: hybrid 4WD off road test! Beats TOYOTA and has Mercedes G-Wagen interior!

  • The GWM Tank 300 is a new hybrid 4WD SUV from China. Yep, Toyota has been evicted as a leader in the 4x4 space with this new hybrid rival!
    The 2023 GWM Tank 300 has a lot of firsts for the Australian market.
    It's the first petrol-electric hybrid 4WD to be offered here, and it's also it's the first ladder-frame chassis SUV to offer that type of powertrain. That means it can run on electric power alone at times, or use its battery pack and motor to push the Tank 300 along in assistance to the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
    This model includes a locking rear diff, proper 4x4 with low-range, and it's a five-seater with a decent boot. Watch the video to see the interior, though - it is MINDBLOWING. Like a Mercedes G-Wagen but for those who don't have $400,000 to spend!!
    It's also the first model under the new specialist off-road Tank sub-brand from Great Wall Motors (now GWM). This model line will include more off-road SUVs soon, but as a first offering in the market, this has a lot going for it.
    It also has no direct rivals. There is not vehicle it clearly competes against on price (from $55,990 drive-away), because the Jeep Wrangler starts at more than eighty grand these days! Plus there is no other hybrid off-roader that can do what this thing can off-road... it's pretty accomplished!
    I didn't get a chance to drive it on-road at the launch event (thanks to GWM for having me along), but let me know if you want a follow-up on-road review - I'll try to arrange it.

    Hi everyone! A lot of you have called out the payload limitation of this vehicle - yep, I’ve confirmed it is 400kg payload for hybrid models. That’s a severe limitation on the usability of the vehicle for families or even adventurous buyers who want to accessorise their 4x4. For instance, my family would likely exceed the limits on our regular big trips to see family, as we have two dogs, a toddler and always take a boot full of stuff. We don’t camp, but I know how much camping gear can weigh!
    I’ve learned that the petrol model, due soon, will have a slightly better payload capacity - more like 475kg - but still not as good as it should be, really.
    Consider this, however - a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four-door model has between 560kg and 570kg payload. That means all those heavily modified Wranglers you see are likely in excess of payload limits, especially if they have more than a couple of occupants.
    Tell me your thoughts!

    • @Harrychambers1
      @Harrychambers1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don’t forget, Matt, the tare mass only includes 10ltr of fuel.
      You need to take another 70kg off the payload if you’ve filled the tank.
      I think this just reinforces the point that the Tank is a fun car rather than a workhorse/family hauler.
      For me it’s a Jimny with most of the problems fixed.

    • @veryaware

    • @Harrychambers1
      @Harrychambers1 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@veryaware it’s a 5 seat car.
      But at an average of 80kg per person you are over if you fill the all the

    After some 18 million cars made and 43 years in business, it would be pretty bad from China's only private and most reputable car company to put some shabby cars on the road. In today's world you don't get to win over new customers with Chinese "shit". Truth is, China now not only has the world's second most active space program (because you need to have pretty good manufacturing and engineering standards to do that) but now they're producing not only world class, but often world leading vehicles. I don't personally like the look of this car, too much of a retro style (and it ain't bronco copy, coz it landed the same time as the Bronco on that market and it takes some 5 years to engineer and design a new car). Now if it had the Haval Dargo look, I'd be much more interested. My GWM Cannon is 2 years old now with over 35,000 km and haven't missed a bit and I don't think this Tank will either.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, China has long been a small player for cars in Australia, but some of the established brands from Japan, Korea, the US and Europe need to be on notice. The Chinese brands aren’t mucking around.

My only gripe is that it is not in diesel (yet?) and that it looks too much like Hummer H3, with its ridiculous pushrod 3.6 Commodore engine. This would be superb with a 3.0 diesel to accompany the impressive electric plant. Price is good too.

    Anytime new cars come out, especially in Australia, I wonder about servicing, dealer networks, outback and rural support for breakdowns etc. Also no diesel? Will need at least 12-24 months in country before we start to see reliability and support network in action.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The reliability of this powertrain is certainly something of an unknown quantity. But the Tank 300 will be sold and serviced through GWM’s already pretty-extensive network. The brand has more than 80 locations for sales or service across Australia, which - admittedly - is no Toyota (200-plus), but is good for a brand that is on a growth trajectory.
      Diesel - yeah. It would fit nicely with this vehicle. But don’t bank on it.
