Saving the Yoshi Kids Without Sushie (300+ Frame-Perfect Inputs)

- Yeah, I just released Top 10 Most Difficult Glitches last month. And yes, we just obsoleted it with this trick. Altogether, this is the most difficult glitch sequence in Paper Mario as of its discovery in April 2016.
It's been known for a while that we could theoretically use Loading Zone Storage and Clippy to get around Jade Jungle without Sushie, but there were still quite a few kinks we had to work out. For one, the trees and debris in the jungle made things way more complicated, and there were concerns about LZS taking priority over the cutscene with the blue yoshi kid. Thankfully, Malleo and I managed to work this out and brought you this footage.

You can hold the A button when you start, because a A press has 3 parts, the start, hold, and then release. so if you only start and then hold, it's connted as half.

I noticed that jumping around OOB creates the water ripple effect even on "land" near the water. I guess the game simply checks if Mario has passed a 'waterline' boundary to toggle a flag on or off that creates those ripples. Dunno why that stuck out to me, but I love tiny little mechanical insights in games.

lol yeah, it's a speedrunning strategy, and most of us have speedrun this game before.

Although I personally don't care for the N64 era too much, but my goodness, the love put into breaking these games. Pannenkoek2012 and others for Super Mario 64, Stryder and others for Project M- I mean, Paper Mario, (previously) Narcissa Wright and others for Ocarina of Time...

heres a question, if you get the yoshi kids without sushie, will the game be in a (sorta) softlock state where the kids are saved but you now dont have access to sushie?
+MrMariosonicman Technically, you still need to obtain Sushie to trigger the yoshi hunt in the first place, but to answer your question in the "what if you skip Sushie" scenario, you would technically be softlocked without the help of other glitches. There is a skip straight to the volcano, and all of the areas sushie is required later in the game can also be skipped. We don't even obtain Sushie in Any% speedruns :o

Unfortionatly, almost all out of bounds glitches require you to ride a partner, usually Lakulester, so you would need at least 1 partner.

Totally not
They might've been aware of certain implications of how things were programmed, but they probably doubted the average player would have figured out how, exactly, to pull off 300+ frame-perfect jumps to save the Yoshi kids, at least the first time around.
It's like how they didn't cap certain counters in the game - yes, it's technically a bug, but its one that you have to go fairly out of the way to trigger, and it's likely not worth the work to fix it. Looking at all these glitches Stryder has unearthed, in fact, gives me that general impression.
@@SwordfighterRed It's also important to consider how many testers actually existed on the project and for how long. In fact, just the differences between the US and Japanese cartridge versions alone are likely numerous, and how much overlap existed between those testers?
As someone who's tested games, even I will tell you from one tester to the other, there's a completely different focus on, and different levels of bugs. Something like these inputs are so unlikely that even if I, the single tester, who discovered it could prove it was reproducable, its likely they still would've shipped it because the bug itself is hard for even my staff in cases to reproduce. This would've been a "ship it" style bug for sure, the average to above average players are not likely to ever know of this without visual assistance, and its hard when you have a large list of bugs (in theory) and only so many can be really targeted, to justify picking this one over another bug that would actually affect traditional gameplay. Like you pointed out yourself.
Note: using "bug" for oversimplification.

I'm curious - how many pixel-perfect inputs and angle-perfect inputs does this require on top of the 311 frame-perfect inputs?
I don't remember the exact number, but there are tons of angle-perfect inputs you need to pull off since the out of bounds seams are very narrow, and you'll end up back in bounds if your angle is barely off.
Not as many pixel-perfect inputs, but there are a couple. Navigating around the edge of a loading zone onto a seam requires you to be in a pixel-perfect position.
But can you do it with 0.5 a presses?

I really like how in some older games (like Pokémon, and Paper Mario) the glitches give you a whole second game to play. Nowadays glitches usually get patched after they are discovered. I guess part of that in the increased availability in multiplayer. In a singleplayer game, a duplication glitch is all in good fun, but in a competitive game it would be cheating.
