For this show, they either hired people who could already sing or people they could teach how to sing (such as Zach Callison, who voices Steven, and who started voicing him as a kid and went through puberty while doing the show, so they had to artificially pitch his voice higher until he could do the voice on his own again). Music, not just songs but background music and leitmotifs, are very important in the show and as such getting good singers was important. The show itself may feel like it's slow to get going, but it's actually laying a lot of groundwork that you don't realize until it really gets going and you're like 'holy crud I didn't think that tiny detail was going to be relevant.' There are five seasons (with season 1 being double the length of the others, and is often unofficially split into 1a and 1b), then the movie, then SU Future, which is set a few years after SU.
i think youd like the show, it starts off kind of slow with silly little episodes slowly explaining things then lots of lore is built up over time. all the songs are bangers too

"Here Comes A Thought" you called relaxing and like yeah. It's about mindfulness and using it to help you process your thoughts and emotions. It was hugely helpful for me when it first came out.

The creator of Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar, is big on including songs in her work, so she made sure that the major character VAs could also sing.
