Someone tell him each character had their own melodies and genre’s that told their personalities. Pearl being the ballerina she loved elegance and perfect form, Amethyst being rugged and unpredictable, Garnet always being upbeat with high tempo, and Steven and Connie putting together a nice alternate style since he played guitar.
ikr, i was a little sad that he only checked out the songs and didn't find out just how much musicality is woven into the fabric of the show itself, but i suppose there was little chance of him knowing without actually watching a few episodes
@@violetrose674 Both? Both, her style is that of a ballerina and she was inspired by one from what I know, the knight part is for when she is fighting but she still keeps that elegance from the ballerina inspiration, she has the shoes that are similar to ballerina shoes
Rebecca Sugar is amazing. She also wrote music for Adventure Time that has some great songs. I love “everything stays” if you want to check it. Any of Marcelines songs from the show
there’s actually a really cool thing with each character being represented by an instrument. Garnet is a synth bass (cuz she’s two gems fused together), Amethyst is the drums, Pearl is piano and Greg Universe is guitar. the cool thing is Pearl and Greg are always fighting (that’s what It’s Over Isnt It is about), in the same way guitar and piano often class in rhythm sections.
And Steven had chiptune for a fairly good while, especially in the earlier episodes. But as he matured and experienced more, the chiptune was replaced.
Fun fact for you all! DeeDee Magno Hall actually put so much into her performance of “it’s over isn’t it?” that the animators had to reanimate the scene to fit the stunning vocals and big climaxing note at the end. This is the reason I love this show!
Undoubtedly, while people hate on the show for the rushed ending and lack of build up the show does some really good things. It has flaws throughout sure but the emotional lessons and music are top notch. As a man I can appreciate this show for what it brings
@@bruiseleeroy7010 I do need to disagree on the emotional lessons part. I liked the show, but it ruined itself a lot, and not to mention a lot of weird choices made by the main cast. The only arc I feel had the best follow through was peridots, as it wasn’t retconned, ruined, dragged on, or forgotten while it happened and afterwords. Garnet for example, was excellent up until after the fusion reveal because they left her character development sort of in the dust and made odd decisions regarding her established character in later episodes. But yeah, banger songs
I really like the lore of the world I kept watching just so I can get info on what happen to the world around them not a fan of the show per say but I liked the world and lore
My child was so into this show. 89 million streams don't surprise me, they were listening to it on loop all the time. We ended up watching the show through together and it's really so good!
A lot of the credit goes to Aivi and Surasshu, the show's background music composers and the ones that put togheter the instrumentals that go with the songs and lyrics that Rebecca composes on either her ukelele or guitar. They also used instrumentation to represent characters and it's just all too lovely
4:04-4:13 can we just take a second to appreciate the animation in that shot? it is so difficult to animate a camera rotation like that and they did it perfectly
Charles, did you know the singer Estelle was the voice of Garnet? And Niki Minaj also voiced a side character. And Patti Lupone... Actually there were a lot of great music people involved in Steven Universe lol
I'm not super experienced with the concept, but I believe "Let Us Adore You" is a good example of writing so that each instrument is playing their own melody (in this case the vocals). It's a beautiful song with great singing!
I do agree that it's a great song, but the thing that bothers me is that whte diamonds singing is way to loud. You can kind of hear yellow, but blue's voice is totally lost in the mix
I still can’t believe It’s Over isn’t it is Pearl’s ONLY solo song in the whole show and it’s easily one of the best ones (and there’s a lot of great songs in SU)
Agreed. Like in Finale from SU the Movie, there's a part where Pearl sings and sorta overtakes the part, it's where she goes "Here we are, Here we are, come so far", that last note is just so powerful and really shows the strength of Pearl's VA's voice. Shame she didn't get any more solo songs, unused potential imo
@@phebz4213 YES! Love like you reprise is one of my favorite songs of the entire show, the build up and the escalation and the climax and THE ENDING HHHHHHHHH song makes me go insane
So many great songs in this show, and it’s even better if you watch the whole thing (5 seasons, a movie, then an epilogue season). Different characters have specific instruments that represent them and occasional motifs too. Awesome mix of jazz and a video game music aesthetic!
@@orangesunshine7666 I love the show, it got me when I watched with my kids some od the episodes, especialy the ending of the season five and the movie, it is so simple yet powerful.
Musically speaking, Seven Universe was/is WAY ahead of its time. Every song is well made, well performed and speaks on some level to everyone. It deserves to be considered more than a kids' cartoon.
I disagree. Instead, it should set a new standard for what a kids' cartoon can be. Children do appreciate this kind of substance, effort and beauty! It's a shame that for so long, media producers felt it was fine to just half ass entertainment because they didn't consider children worth any of that. While watching the show there were so many moments where I cried and said "I wish someone had told/shown me this as a child! I needed to know! I needed to know but nobody told me!" And it made me happy for all the children who will grow up understanding these things. For all the kids who will tell their loved ones when they struggle with scary stuff because Steven showed them that you loved ones want to know how you feel, even if it's a lot for them to deal with! All the children who will clock deception because Pearl made a horrible, inexcusable mistake. All the children who will know the difference between love and infatuation because Garnet cleanly rebuffed the guy with a crush on her. This cartoon is SO GOOD because it was made for kids, but with respect and effort!
@@Broeckchen Agreed, but.... that's a HIGH standard to set as the average. I doubt we will have another show on the level of SU for quite some time, although, oddly enough, Centaurworld came close....
I love seeing you vibe like this. You might find it interesting that "Love Like You" was built up in snippets at the end of each episode. The fans didn't get to hear the entire song until the end of the show. This is one of the reasons that making it build like that was so smart.
It was at this moment that I realised that Stronger Than You has the same chords as Just The Two Of Us, which, given the context of the character the song is about (who is basically a culmination of two characters' love), makes perfect sense. And also that it's a blast to improvise over, especially with some of the more synth-y sounds on an EWI
@@PTSD_Guts unfortunately, you'd be way behind the curve on that mashup. There's already a really popular Stronger than you, Just the two of us, and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger mashup song and I doubt no one has tried it without that third one
As a guitar player "Escapism" is one of my favourite songs from Steven Universe. It was probably the first song from a TV show which I had learnt for the guitar which I could play over and over and not get tired of.
I keep thinking of amazing stuff too! Escapism, That Distance Shore, Let Us Adore You, Change, the instrumental of Whats the Use of Feeling Blue, Familiar, and even just the backing music.
I love when shows use music to tell a story or deliver a powerful message. "It's over isn't it" is a beautifully written song about loss and is easily one of the most memorable songs in any animated show for me. It combines the reality of losing someone you love with magic space rocks and this energy would resonate throughout the entire show
"It's over isn't it" is a banger, and is even better when you hear the story of how they had to re-draw some of the scene/storyboard because Deedee Mango Hall went harder than they expected.
You cannot appreciate “Stronger Than You” in its fullness without understanding what was just going on with the one who is performing. It is one of my most rewatched episodes of the series.
The way Charles plays the piano is just so, natural. So warm, so smooth. That just comes out of his amazing amazing understanding of music. Like cool lemonade on a hot summer day, Charlie.
I still listen to that album..i heard that album way before binging Steven universe and when i did watch, I had no idea who composed the music for it but the tone was so familiar.
Instrumental Steven Universe music is so soothing and calming. Reminds me of the Night in the Woods ost, perfect for on a rainy day when you're just chilling
Dang I haven’t seen this show in years but this definitely brought back some nostalgia! (Somehow I still knew “it’s over isn’t it” would be here and bam there it was)
I am partial by being a fan of the show, but the way it builds up to the full version of Love like you is so good. For those who don't know, Love like you is the end credits of the show, but the whole song never plays. Instead we got just snippets, harmonies and different instruments each and every time the show ended... pure stroke of genius, and it's no wonder that is the most streamed song, because listening to it brings catharsis
OH OH please let me talk about its development over the years because holy shit its art! For the first few seasons, we get the simple love like you melody and rebecca singing the lyrics. The first seasons are always referred to as the most lighthearted ones, since we're joined with Steven still learning everything about the gems and his powers. However as later seasons progress bringing along the plot developments of homeworld gems, pink diamond being shattered, and steven slowly uncovering Rose's past as one that wasn't as heroic as he made it out to be, "love like you" is straight up removed as an end credits song! Its instead replaced with these ominous instrumentals that's usually associated with homeworld. Diamond synths, a discordant piano melody, electric drums mixed in. You're drawn to a sense of dread as to where the story is going - after all, you started off love like you and now you get this? BUT with the heart of the crystal gems special, after Steven learns of his mom's nature and the diamonds come to earth, the end credits shift again - the final swings of the unfamiliar space orchestra dies away and we return to an opening swell of "Love Like You" playing again! Its cathartic! After years of not hearing it, we are literally given a return to the shows roots in one of the most important episodes in the show. The entire piece literally describes the flow of the story, with each section divided up to certain developments that we the audience undergo with steven. From that wonderful introduction, to pestering doubt, and finally a return to the familiar - a whole message of love and acceptance.
Love like you is the most genius song in the whole show IMO. The fact that you can interpret the song from different characters' perspective, it's beautiful.
What's more impressive even is the importance they gave to the music and how it's ingrained in the show itself: the first character you listened to (Pearl), is represented by the piano in both incidental music and songs. So of course her solo is mostly her singing to a piano background! What's more, the bridge of her song is a progression that tends to appear in music associated to her (that kind of descending scale), and to her personality of the more serious and mellow character on the show. So effectively, every character has a characteristical "sound"! (As said by other commenters, every character is represented by an instrument). And "Love like you" is really lovely, isn't it?
"It's Over Isn't It" is from the episode Mr. Greg, which was the episode the Crewniverse practiced making it an entire musical to see if they would be able to pull off something similar for the movie (Steven Universe The Movie). The movie actually starts with drawing back layers of red curtains and ends with a musical number sung on a lit stairs stage with everyone dressed in feathered top hats and big feather tails. The rest of the songs from Mr. Greg are: Like a Burger, Don't Cost Nothing, Empire City, Mr. Greg, [It's Over Isn't It,] Both of You, Don't Cost Nothing (Reprise)
wow i had no idea!! i always wondered why where were so many songs in that episode and why they were so incredible!! obviously every other song is amazing too but just wow Mr. Greg knocked it out of the park!!
as a music nerd that was also a fan of the show while it was airing, hearing Pearl sing a melody that lands on the 6th scale degree with the maj7 chord in the piano 0:53, it's an immediate "oh shit" moment
I cried in 98% of Steven’s episodes 😅 also I have a thing when I see someone explaining or talking about things they love, and this was so delightful, I’m totally in love with the host now!!
I can’t sing Rebecca Sugar’s praises enough when I say I don’t know how my life would be without their work. they are incredibly talented and I would’ve never really known my love for music if I didn’t grow up watching Steven universe and Adventure time (you can find more of Rebecca‘s music there because they worked on the show).
@@guacamollie2460 Lmao no. She made every decision herself. She made the crappy spinoff series, she made every villain unrealistically revert no matter what, and makes Steven the stereotypical God main character. It's just not good. Cookie cat carried the earlier seasons, it's just garbage without our cosmic feline ice cream treat.
SU is great. Every character gets their own instrument, and when they fuse the instruments fuse as well. Also, it's got some big musical talent for the regular voice cast (Pearl's VA went so hard in "it's over isn't it" that they had to reanimate it. If youre looking for shows, have you tried Over The Garden Wall?
Not only the songs are great in Steven Universe. but it helps the show flow so well. Every character is represented by an instrument and every single song plays a major role on the character development. You should check out Over The Garden Wall, hidden masterpiece not only in animation, but also some of the best soundtracks ever written imo.
This is what happens when the creator of a show has experience as a writer, animator, singer and songwriter. You get wonderful music paired with beautiful visuals. Rebecca Sugar is awesome, you can just tell they put all their love and hard work into the music and story.
@@yoloboogie3674gotta disagree, SU was great from start to finish. I think it got a bad rap because it got rushed at the end but that wasn’t Sugar’s fault. And future just blew me away, you don’t see that kind of intense character study in animation often
oh 100%, having skills in a bunch of different stuff makes it so you can intertwine each thing with purpose. This show has some beautiful visuals, beautiful audio, and a beautiful story
For the longest time when the show was airing the song "love like you" was only given in pieces as the ending theme and it was always my favorite song from the series and when it fully played for the first time I was so happy. I'm glad you appreciate it as much as I do. Id suggest making a video on some Halo music like from Halo 3: ODST. Martin O'Donnell's work is really good in my opinion and there are a lot of pieces that have jazz styles and influences.
Dude, this is just the tip of the TIP of the iceberg of mind-blowing tracks recorded for this show. Steven Universe changed my life and heavily impacted my music and composition and I’ll be forever thankful for it 👌
Really glad to hear you play "Love Like You" That song was especially popular, not only because it's one of the most beautiful pieces of writing in the show, but because it was the end credits theme, and since the credits are shorter than the song, different episodes would play a different section of the song... giving you just a taste of its beautiful melodies, and leaving you wanting more. And then I believe it was one of the season finales where they finally play the full tune, and it was such a powerful moment.
You could really check the music in the game "Celeste". The topics treated in the game are rounded really well by the musical compositions, definitely worth listening to alone
this video took me back to when i sang "love like you" at a high school performance and,, to see him so excited about the music got me so emotional, i remember when most of my friends wouldn't understand or took for granted steven universe's music because it was a "children's show" and damn,,, seeing someone analyze the music to this depth and get so excited about it is so cool and dear to me!!! thank you for making this video!
"Love like you" is literally the one song that's played in the very back of my mind for as long as I'd been watching the show. It's my brains background music, I'll have other songs stuck in my head but when there's nothing else for a minute, I start humming Love Like You. This show changed my life, taught me stuff about emotional growth that I didn't know, and took over my life while it ran. I get teary still to this day thinking about it being over lmao. Steven Universe is absolutely legendary, best cartoon to exist yet.
Not enough love for composers Aivi & Surasshu in these comments, I feel! They're the music duo behind all the soundtracks and literally had just one week to compose each 11 minute block!
Yup! Rebecca Sugar wrote some of these songs fully, but most of them she wrote the lyrics, and aivi and surasshu wrote the melody and everything else, and performed the instrumentals
I adore that someone who's so strong in the music theory department is so impressed by these songs, Steven Universe is an extremely important and comforting show in my life and music is also a very big part of my life, so it all mixed together it's lovely seeing someone so musically inclined enjoying it too!
I don't get why it's not classified as a musical as its genre anywhere though. It's clearly a musical, characters randomly break into song in certain episodes like in Mr Greg
For those of you who had Disney Channel (Cable) in the early 90's, you will be surprised to know that the voice of Pearl(s) was performed by DeeDee Magno-Hall from the original "New" Mickey Mouse Club! And this means both the spoken AND singing voices! Honestly, I was a HUGE fan of that show as a kid and she was one of my favorite cast members. Her voice is AMAZING!
Completely different show. MMC was a live-action variety show. DeeDee's last season was the season they had her, Keri Russell, JC Chasez, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Cristina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling.
I would love to see a video on the music from Over the Garden Wall! Its soundtrack showcases intelligent writing that goes beyond the vast majority of “kids shows” .
The music is insane especially when you watch the show. That first song also gets the melody referenced, like a quote earlier/later in the episode and its so hidden its just a total mind melt. Also I'm slightly sad Charles didn't comment the opening of stronger than you and its near replication of bill wither's 'just the two of us' which (again, going along with the story), is hella poetic way given Garnet (estelle) is singing about her being two fused gems and 'just the two of us' as a hinted intro is almost like an inside joke, poetic AF.
I haven’t listened to SU music for years and you start with my favorite song that I would listen to on repeat over and over. This brought back lots of memories. (That whole episode was full of great songs).
My favorite Steven Universe song is probably Other Friends from the movie. I mean what's not to love about that song? It's the closest Cartoon Network has done to a quality Disney villain song. It's catchy enough to make you want to root for the bad guys (in this case, Spinel).
Watching a "Music Person" just absolutely LOVE the music from literally my favourite piece of media in the history of children's animation makes me SO HAPPY! I thought I personally just loved the music but being told by someone that knows music just how good it is and why it is THAT GOOD is just AMAZING!
Steven Universe was an underrated gem for many reasons but its soundtrack was probably one of the best in shows of it's caliber. Sad it's over but happy that it's spread to you too😁!
How is it underrated? I'm just curious, to my knowledge this is one of the most popular shows of the past decade, maybe you mean underrated critically?
@@nwcr_ maybe but it was underrated pretty generally too. It even got ended prematurely with little signs of a return for a while. But when it came back with Steven Universe the movie and Future? THATS when I felt like it became of the most popular shows of its era Good point tho!
I don't have the faintest idea what he's talking about with all the cords and notes and what not but his joy is so infectious i watched all the way through!
Seeing a person's reaction to my favorite show of all time for the first time always warms my heart especially when they appreciate the music so much like this- This makes me happy
I didn't realize I've already watched this, but I'm back after 2 years and I still get that overwhelming joy from seeing your reaction, the way you take the time to appreciate every chord, every note, in all of these songs fills my little Steven universe-lover heart with warmth and nostalgia. Thank you for giving these songs a listen. I cannot be more grateful that my favorite show is so widely credited for the music.
If you were to do another one of these, I’ve got four suggestions: Shining Through-this one is inspired by bossa nova tracks, right up your alley. Prince Pearl’s Theme-I’m biased because a chord near the end makes me cry but it’s such a dynamic composition and it’s written for TWO pianos! Happily Ever After-great representation of the leitmotif system that the composers use in this franchise. True Kinda Love-if you thought soloing over Stronger Than You was fun…
Am i the only one who cries like a baby whenever "Here we are in the future" is played, cause looking back they had such an adventure, and it just hits you that it's their journey is nearing it's end
Not at all, that song and Finale literally make me start to cry whenever I play them. It's weird, because I practically grew up alongside Steven, so finally seeing their story come to an end was just heartwrenching, and bittersweet
please please please do more Steven Universe songs! there are so many good ones, I would love a part two! some of my favorites musically are "Peace and Love on the Planet Earth" "Escapism" "Drift Away" "True Kinda Love" "Change your Mind" and "Do it for Her", but even just the instrumental parts of the movie album are so phenomenal
One thing I actually like about the show is that not all of the characters sing traditionally well which creates a very unique and very relatable sort of sound. Although we are watching Season 5 and I realized that Steven is actually getting really good at singing! It's so cute!
Your insane excitement for Love Like You is exactly how excited I was when I first heard it as a musician. It was the final song at my wedding, such a beautiful thematic piece!
im not sure how much it has musically but one of my favourite songs from steven universe is "Do It For Her" its so good and it ties into the story and gives you just a little hint of pearl and rose's story while pulling you along with the current story of connie and steven and UGH SO GOOD there are so many good songs
It's hard to believe how long this show has been over for, it has definitely helped with my maturation (that's a word I think), the music is just so memorable that the messages in the lyrics just stick.
Yes, it is a word! And ditto on everything you said! I went from 14 to almost 20 alongside the whole show, rewatching so much of it in between and I still watch it as my comfort show. Much love, friend!
@@baghouse2678 The music for one, the childish yet entertaining action, then later into the show they begin to discuss real topics like abandonment, death and more
@@baghouse2678 It's really funny and smart, it has really good representation, and like others said it tackles some big topics in a really good way. The characters are really complex, get emotional, and are flawed. Everyone gets character development and it always feels earned. It also has fantastic music. Like, complex jazzy stuff in a few places.
Something I love about the song "made of love" is the chord progression seems to be similar (if not the same) to "Just the two of us" by bill withers. I've always loved that element because it ties in so nicely to the characters of ruby and sapphire being a strong couple!
A lot of the credit for Steven Universe’s music has to go to Aivi and Surasshu. They’re responsible for the instrumental tracks, and though I’m not confident, I’d be willing to bet the played a large role in the accompaniment for the vocal songs, too. The melody, though, is likely (almost) always straight from Rebecca Sugar themself.
I used to do a lot of one hour composing competitions with Surasshu (one of the main composers of the soundtrack) back in the day. He's an absolute genius.
My experience learning music is like a language, and hearing someone take apart things, and talk in-depth about how they feel, what they are "saying" with different things in the music, is helping immensely. Im at that early language learning stage where i hear "words" that I know I've heard before, or sometimes can place in other songs, but not yet at the stage where I actually know what those things are. here's hoping I reach a new level this year.
I was accepted to a really amazing music school recently, and I've been on the fence because I'm not sure what I want to do with my life yet. Watching you improvise to "Stronger than you" might have just pushed me over the edge.
Steven Universe music's has so many layers not just with the theory side of things, also with how the music and theory relates to the show and the story that's being told. For example: in "it's over isn't it" the line she sings at the end of the choruses "It's over isn't it, why can't I move on" stays on the same note adding to this line the feeling of being stuck and not moving on (insane writing and attention to details). Big fan of the music!
To be honest, I’d REALLY love to see you react to the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack. Songs like Hollow Bastion, Night of Fate, Destati, Dearly Beloved, Dance of the Daring, Vector to the Heavens, Traverse Town. Just some of the greatest video game songs with such interesting compositions and emotion.
holy hell it's been a hot while since ive looked up anything about SU. then this suddenly appeared on my recommendations, i cant tell you how much nostalgia i felt when you played "Love Like You"
There's something very heartwarming to me how he says these make an incredible gateway because they _are_ in that the show was rendered(?) for a young, impressionable audience, so it's like a perfect opportunity. I feel like he would have also really enjoyed True Kinda Love, Other Friends, _maybe Both of You???_ (it's shorter than the ones I mentioned) and Here Comes a Thought. He'd probably be pleased to know that the singer of Other Friends (Sarah Stiles) _is also_ an actress known for her work in Broadway theatre. Edit: I actually forgot to mention how much I'd love for him to hear those renditions of Love Like You where it's just the ending bits from the show strung together, because there's like a specific part in it (an interlude? idk my terms) that has such a nice piano bit before the guitar that brings us back to the main theme. Best video I've found would be from Phizzy.
You have NO idea how excited I was to find this on my recommended!! I would love a part two, the scores for Steven Universe are also amazing - I think you'll really like Pearl's Theme and so many others!! If I remember correctly, Deedee went so hard in “It’s Over Isn’t It?” that they had to redraw pearl to show the emotion in the song
This makes sense. Goddamn that thing made SU stop feeling like scripted tv for a min.
Yep! They had to change the story board before they fully animated it because she put her SOUL into that song.
I was not ready for the amount of emotions that song put me through I just had to call it a day and stay in to just cry in bed with it on repeat lol

@@floridaman7243 i'm talking about the chord vocab
@@Northflowo either way
@@Northflowo here's some basics to understand
in chords we notate each note of a scale with numbers, let's take the C major scale
So the notes CDEFGAB Will be notated with each respective numbers, so the tonic (the first note of the scale) would be a 1
so you can notate the notes with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and so on if you go to the next octave [9; 11; 13 ...]
So let's take a Cmaj chord as an example [C - E - G]
the C would be 1 the E would be 3 and the G would be 5
a 7th is the 7th degree of the scale added to the chord so Cmaj7 would be [C - E - G - B] with B as the 7th
If we take a minor scale, like A minor the same thing goes - notes are notated through numbers, but this time, A is the 1, so the 1 3 and 5
would be [A C E] and because it's a minor scale, it will sound minor
if numbers in chords are flat or sharp you just raise the degrees up or down by a semitone (the smallest interval in the western temperament) so a C7b9 would flatten both the 7th and 9th degree
Now sus chords, Charles made an entire video dedicated to them, so I advise you checking it out!
Anyways hope that explains a bit of the chord vocab

@@bruiseleeroy7010 I do need to disagree on the emotional lessons part. I liked the show, but it ruined itself a lot, and not to mention a lot of weird choices made by the main cast. The only arc I feel had the best follow through was peridots, as it wasn’t retconned, ruined, dragged on, or forgotten while it happened and afterwords. And it all comes together when they fuse!

I remember people piecing all the snippets together on SoundCloud lol changed my life
@@kingsaracoon9594 yes!!! its so goooodddd

Watching a "Music Person" just absolutely LOVE the music from literally my favourite piece of media in the history of children's animation makes me SO HAPPY! I thought I personally just loved the music but being told by someone that knows music just how good it is and why it is THAT GOOD is just AMAZING!
Honestly, I'm just grinning from how much he was clearly just enjoying the music and enjoying the vibe. He looked like he was having so much fun
Steven Universe was an underrated gem for many reasons but its soundtrack was probably one of the best in shows of it's caliber.
Sad it's over but happy that it's spread to you too😁!
hahahaha. a gem
@@kkw6170 LMAO i didnt even mean to do that but it worked out anyway😂
How is it underrated? I'm just curious, to my knowledge this is one of the most popular shows of the past decade, maybe you mean underrated critically?
@@nwcr_ maybe but it was underrated pretty generally too. It even got ended prematurely with little signs of a return for a while.
But when it came back with Steven Universe the movie and Future? THATS when I felt like it became of the most popular shows of its era
Good point tho!
@@chidi329 just for the sake of clarity, I’m fairly sure that the premature near-cancellation was at least in *part* due to the same-sex wedding?
If you were to do another one of these, I’ve got four suggestions:
Shining Through-this one is inspired by bossa nova tracks, right up your alley.
Steven Universe honestly has so many jazzy tracks, I'm surprised it flew under Charles's radar
please please please do more Steven Universe songs! there are so many good ones, I would love a part two! some of my favorites musically are "Peace and Love on the Planet Earth" "Escapism" "Drift Away" "True Kinda Love" "Change your Mind" and "Do it for Her", but even just the instrumental parts of the movie album are so phenomenal
I LOVE HOW PASSIONATE HE IS!!! IT'S... it's honestly amazing... it really is... he's an amazing guy I'm happy to see in this life...
@@aliyahpulido953 me 12 to 18
"Stronger Than You" makes me cry every damn time I hear it. This show is incredible, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys animated shows.
LITERALLY SAME
True it is The best Series in The world
what makes it good? haven't seen it and I'm curious
Well no wonder her last name is Sugar. She added just enough sugar to make these songs exquisite masterpieces
Sugar causes diabetes...
But its nice in moderation :)
0:58 I love how the higher-scaling instrumentals contrast with Deedee’s lower vocals. It nails that melancholy feel.
Watching you improvise to "Stronger than you" might have just pushed me over the edge.
seeing a professional jazz musician nerd out over one of my favorite songs ever created is making me very happy 😭
I would love an album where Charles would just play over Cartoon Instrumentals, it would be divine
yea
Roxas's Theme, too!
@@Ace_Maus Oooo yes, that one makes me cry!!
holy hell it's been a hot while since ive looked up anything about SU. then this suddenly appeared on my recommendations, i cant tell you how much nostalgia i felt when you played "Love Like You"
There's something very heartwarming to me how he says these make an incredible gateway because they _are_ in that the show was rendered(?) for a young, impressionable audience, so it's like a perfect opportunity.
Him talking about music notes: 7:27
Me whose a Steven Universe fan: "I like your funny words magic man"
This music in Steven Universe always seems to fit the characters and the scene perfectly.
I was so glad it started with "it's over isn't it"
That song's amazing
You have NO idea how excited I was to find this on my recommended!! I would love a part two, the scores for Steven Universe are also amazing - I think you'll really like Pearl's Theme and so many others!! Even if you don't do a video, just play it in the background while you're doing something. You'll love it!
The way he smiles while listening to the music is so wholesome😌
I love how at 2:02 you can see him freeze when pearl starts singing again
