If I remember correctly , Rebecca Sugar chose the VA cast because of their singing abilities . For me , Steven Universe has been always one of the best shows in terms of the OST.

So that means Steven pretty much is just _guessing_ what others want from him, and does his best to live up to that.

Oh and about the audio distortion: I don't think that's the only thing going on here. It really does sound kinda distorted. But additionally to some weird problems along those lines, it also might be the British dub, which is the US dub, except in Europe playback is at a different frame rate than in the US (PAL instead of NTSC), so they actually changed the speed of the whole thing slightly, rather than deciding to alter any frames (which would be a nightmare for frame-by-frame animated stuff like this), so you get a slight pitch shift too, to match the changed frame rate. And it takes a slightly different time to get through it all.

If you’re liking Steven Universe I would DEFINITELY definitely recommend The Owl House, obviously not giving story details but it’s structured like a more plot driven Steven universe where there’s still fun episodes but it delves into its lore and continues the story more often then not
