Damn it’s crazy I remember watching this video months ago getting hyped up to leave for osut and I just graduated today from BCO. 795th and now I actually understand everything you’re saying as I rewatch
I did army basic in fall of 1988 at Jackson. No audible bugle call heard at 04:30 at the barracks, reveille, just a bunch of hollering and 60 men scrambling in the open bay when the lights went on. 15 minutes to shave, shit, piss, don PT uniforms, get beds tightened up and have your stupid ass outside on line. My buddy constantly telling me to hurry up in the morning as I was tightening up my bunk. I was one of those look-pretty trainees. I spent too much time on my bed trying to get it perfect for fear the drill sergeants would tear it up. I can't remember any such color "phases" back then. Just 8 weeks of pure misery. Soldiers of America do feel proud and tall once they hear the band music stepping onto the parade field clad in Class A's.

The gun range? The machine gun range? If you do the field in the winter snow at permanent duty station, you have an artic-grade sleeping bag issued and you don't want to get out of that thing in the morning or to pull guard shifts. My buddy and I were issued a canvas shelter half to assemble a pup tent. I was in basic in November 1988, the final FTX to be followed by a 15 mile road march back to the barracks, and it got chilly and damp lying down prone to pull guard shift in just winter BDU's and field jacket. I want to be standing up on the surface or in the foxhole in chilly weather to pull guard to move around and step in place to stay warm. I was a 63B10, LWVM, and we, the motor pool section, often had GP medium tents with stoves or hermann-nelsons for wintertime FTX.

When you pack to leave for MP OSUT your recruiter should give you a packing list but some things I brought were Hygiene Products, Two Pair of Civilian Clothes, a back pack, and my phone. That’s about it because when you get to reception to inprocess before you get go to training they will give you an Eagles Cash Card to buy everything you need from the Troop store so don’t worry if you forget anything.
