  • @Stinkoman87
    @Stinkoman87 ปีที่แล้ว +423

    Another thing I feel Hoenn does best is town theming. Other regions have interesting things IN the towns, but Hoenn is the only region where there is something interesting ABOUT the towns. Towns in treetops, towns floating on the water, towns in inactive volcanos, and in the remakes, a town that's a giant mall.

      My fav is the town with the hot spring connected to the Pokemon center. I would spent so much time just chilling in the water, even though it doesn’t really do anything (as a kid, I thought it would help the Wynaut egg hatch faster lol) The aesthetic of it is just so calming. Same with Vertanturf (I hope that’s right) with all the flowers billowing in the wind and everyone talking about how clean the air is. It has such a chill atmosphere to it :)

    So funny thing about Gen 1. Regarding the "interconnectedness" of the region, it's surprisingly loose with gow you can do the gyms. You just need to do Brock first, Misty second, Giovonni last, and Koga before Blaine (so you can use surf to reach Cinnabar). You can just do Sabrina third and Surge seventh if you really want to

    • @honeycrisp808
      @honeycrisp808 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      These kinds of things would be cool if Pokemon didn't have locked levels for gym leaders. It's one thing for gen one, but even scarlet and violet have gyms you can do in "any order" but you're still forced to go along the level curse

      @@emblemblade9245 After you get Cut, you can go back to Pallet. If you have Surf, you can go south to Cinnabar. Since you don't need Strength to get there, you only need 3 badges, Brock, Misty, and Koga, to get to Cinnabar.

    I think the region design for Diamond, Pearl & Platinum is one of the best. It also gave me those Kanto vibes, since there where these many paths en passes through mount Coronet. Also many different random optional things to explore. Routes felt like ACTUAL routes. And different each time. Not just another patch of grass, or 5 steps and you’re at the next town. But the routes themselves where actually explorable and felt like wilderness where trainers would go out and train. It didn’t feel like “roads” like in more recent gens, where it would be weird for people to just stand around and wait for a trainer to pass all day. It felt like they where training there.
    But yeah the region. Like how you need to back track sometimes to explore a different part where you couldn’t go to before and stuf. As a kid I had to figure that stuf out all on my own. Since I didn’t speak English back than yet (cause it’s not my mother language), it was quite a challenge figuring out where to go or what to do sometimes. Which is why it reminds me of Kanto and Johto.
    That combined with the sometimes actual difficult battles that proved to be a real challenge, was engaging to play, train and try again. Cause I wanted to progress and explore the rest of the region. Don’t even get me started on Cynthia and the post game with a WHOLE NEW island. Or the actual world ending threat of Team Galactic and how sinister and serious they felt. Or the awesome Pokémon designs.
    Only flaw I personally had with it where the so many Hm’s. Which either held your team back in terms of moves, or you needed to leave one Pokémon out of the team most of the time to progress with an Hm slave.
    So yeah, might also be the nostalgia, but that’s why I think Gen 4 is still the best till this day. (Than I mean the improved Pokémon Platinum version.)

    Beat part of gen 1 is probably its level design. It feels very interconnected and simple to pick up and play.
    best part of gen 2 is that postgame and just expanding the pokemon world. It is the only big sequel that is not the same gen and Gamefreak made sure to add as much as they can for gen 2 and more for HGSS.
    Best part about gen 3 is that even though it is probably one of my least favorite gens on the account of not playing everything but firered and emerald, it is the only gen to be 60 fps all the way through. So, the gameplay feels super smooth. gen 5 is 60 fps in battle but not anywhere else.
    Best part of gen 4 is just expanding the moveset and the special/physical split. DP were very rough but Platinum smooths out lot of the rougher edges. I think expanding the world lore to include god tier pokemon is also up there.
    Best part of gen 5 is the story. it is probably the only gen to actually have a proper RPG styled story with twists and turns you expect out of it. For BW2, postgame easily. It is right there with HGSS for giving you bang for your buck with what you can do past the main story.
    Best part of gen 6 would be the expanded shiny hunting methods. You got pokeradar back, friend safari, masuda method, chain fishing, dexnav etc. It is what led me to be a shiny hunter and a big reason as to what kept me a pokemon fan to this day. Honorable mention goes to the customization, especially outfits for Serena. She gets 5x as much outfit choices with way more variety. I so fully regret playing as Calem for my main Y file that I chose the female avatar for every other game and even non-pokemon games since. Although, it seems Gamefreak has decided to pretty much homogenize the outfits in later gens.
    Best part of gen 7 is just atmosphere of the Alola region and the Pokemon designs. It feels like a tropical paradise and probably one of the top region I would like to either visit or live in if I could go to the pokemon world. UBs and regional variants breath so much creativity in the region than megas ever could. I love mega but they are definitely artistically limiting. You can only make these fully evolved mons so much more extreme before they become overdesigned or break the game balance.
    Best part of gen 8 might be all of the small quality of stuff they added to make raising mons and just general navigation way easier. You can now just change moves on the fly. You got PC boxes on the go. You can use vitamins for all of the Evs instead of just 100 per type. Exp candies and exp share for really fast level ups postgame etc.
    Best part of gen 9 are probably the rivals honestly. By splitting the game story into three parts, you get decent amount of screentime to all of them and they don't feel cookie cutter. it also makes the finale one of the best in the series next to BW1. Of course, the giant seamless open world would be the best part if not for the technical issues.

    What i loved about scarlet and violet is that if you catch pokemon under level 10 at the beginning of your adventure and raised them to higher levels without a badge they would still obey you its like they grew with you as you wondered the land tho it took some of the pressures of raising them to high between gyms it gave freedom at the start and control too because if you catch over your level cap they wouldn't obey you😂

  • @tk24life
    @tk24life ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Another factor that adds to Kanto's replay value is the ability to take on most gyms and other challenges in any order. This makes each play-through feel unique, especially since this means you can fit almost any Pokemon onto your team, depending on which order you take gyms and other challenges on. In Generation 1, it seems like every Pokemon is viable for a casual play-through, compared to other generations where you have Pokemon like Shuckle that are unusable in play-throughs. I don't think we've seen these qualities in any other region.

The next time you come home, you're a far cry from the last time you could have gone home before the ledge. Your Pokemon will have evolved, you'll have faced dozens of battles, fought off Team Rocket more than once, earned a number of badges. You'll have gone from a little kid playing with Pokemon to a full-fledged Pokemon trainer. And, after seeing so many sights on your journey, Pallet Town will seem... small.
    It also divides the world, in a way. Viridian City and Pewter City seem so big compared to Pallet Town, but Lavender Town is about the same size and is considered small by the standards of those past Mt. Moon. The world before Mt. Moon has much different standards for what constitutes a "city" than the world after.

    The open world of Paldea also comes with the drawback of trainer battles no longer being an obstacle you need to navigate taking supplies into account for. At any point you can just fly to the nearest pokemon center and heal up. It would have been nice if there were some dungeons to delve into like the old cave, forest, or ocean route. You just never get the desperate "If I path around the grass like this and avoid this trainer I can make it to the next town" feeling which was a shame.

  • @mizusenshi8172
    @mizusenshi8172 ปีที่แล้ว

    Johto has always been my favorite though at first I wasn't sure why. I think Gen 2 was when I really got serious about the games (it was the first game I bought a strategy guide for) plus I like a lot of the Pokémon. Also more recently when I started playing Gold and then Crystal on 3DS for the first time (I had only played Silver before) it just felt incredibly nostalgic. Also I think it was around Gen 2 that I got seriously into gaming in general, since I really only became a proper gamer with the N64, largely by playing Pokémon games like Snap and Stadium.
    Second place would probably be Sinnoh. The Gen 4 games got me back into the series after a brief period between Gens 2 and 4 where I fell out of love with both Pokémon and just anime in general (meaning I never played Gen 3, though I'd like to remedy that now after playing Alpha Sapphire and also hearing how cool Gen 3 is from all the Hoenn baby Pokétubers). Gen 4 was the first time I really participated in Mystery Gift events too, so it's memorable for that. Also the spin-off games like Ranger and Conquest.
    It's funny you mention the roller skates in Kalos cause I kinda hated those things TBH. Like, they were cool, but unlike the bike you couldn't TAKE THEM OFF. Having the option to take them off would have been nice. Also I don't feel like they implemented customization ENOUGH honestly - sure you could buy clothes, but aside from Lumiose City's shops, there weren't that many boutiques, unlike later gens where basically every city has places to customize your character (heck, Paldea lets you change your outfit even out in the field). Of course being on 3DS they may have had some limitations. I will also say they did better with the 3D models than some other 3DS games I've seen (granted, some of the Pokémon models are odd, but the ones of human characters are well done). The Kalos games also have good lore I think, and the best designed Pokémon League IMO (I mean come on, it's a freaking CASTLE). I'm also a Francophile, so I think I enjoyed Kalos a lot for that reason.

    Kanto: I love how open ended it is. On my last FR play through i just skipped surge and did the gyms in a completely different order
    Johto: i know people dont like it but back tracking in Johto is fun. Dark cave, union cave, and surfing all get better the more you progress in the game.
    Hoenn: Ah the best reigon, everything you do is incredible. Hoenn design for the first 5 gym part of the story is great. So many routes making movement increadbly easy to go through
    Thats all i got im not really interested in the later stuff, not right now

    I'll be honest, Paldea's open region is one of the things I like least about it. Not that I don't appreciate the freedom it gives the player, but they didn't implement it well; there is no level scaling, so you're either over or under leveled depending on where you go, large areas of the map feel empty and uninteresting, The Team Star bases aren't worth exploring once the boss is taken down, and so on.

Say what you will about Dexit, the amount of choices you had just when you entered the wild area after like 15 minutes of gameplay was amazing. Honestly galar has a few other really good points, the overall writing of the main story might not be good but the individual character writing really brings a lot of characters to life and makes the gym leaders and rivals memorable, it's also interesting how in the end, none of the rivals actually got what they set out to do but in the way the found something there passionate about, hop quiting the trainer life to become Sonia's assistant, bede becoming successor to the fairy gym and Marnie pulling an uraraka and not wining the literal legue but making a big enough splash she whon what she wanted.
    also the side drama with the gyms was great, Nessa being on a tight rope between modeling and losing gym battles, Leon and ryhan having a rivalry, also its the game that i feel visually captures the essence pokemon the best being stialised and magical instead of trying to be realistic. The character animation was great, people talk a lot of sht about hop and how using the same animation for cutscenes but no one talks about the subtle animation tweaks for hops pokeball and battle animation trough his character ark, every gym all the important trainers had lively animations to react to things in battle and sometimes they changed to reflect the character.

    The use of music in Unova is very varied and ambitious and Celestial Tower and Elite Four battle themes are imo masterpieces! That being said I don't think Unova (as entirety) has a better soundtrack than for example Hoenn and Johto games where I feel like every single boss battle theme is incredible!
    I feel that Sinnoh music is often very overlooked while it contains such brilliant tracks like Global terminal, Team Galactic Battle themes for grunts, commanders and Cyrus, Mt. Coronet (upper), Giratina theme, Lakefront and Lake cave themes, Dialga/Palkia theme, Frontier Brain battle theme, Lake guardians battle theme etc.
    But there is no Pokémon soundtrack I've heard that I dislike. If we were to include spin-offs the best soundtrack would have to go probably to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers Of Time/Darkness/Sky. Just phenomenal musical work in that game!
