    Hi, this was really helpful. Thank you.
    I watched this because I'm having a thought on buying a left handed chin rest and fixing on this right handed violin I got (I'm left handed)
    Will this work? Will I need to re-string my violin?

    After carving my own wooden chin rest I have fitted it and it works well but I was concerned about the possibility of over-tightening. Is this an issue, particularly with older violins?

      I basically tighten until it doesn’t move anymore. No more

    How far in does the chin rest are set. Does the metal posts touch the violin body? Should really be include this information in the video.

      When you push the chin rest brackets in all the way (towards the violin), the vertical turning portions will be very close to the violin. Typically the top portion of the turning vertical pats nearest the rest itself will be closer. Sometimes the vertical turning portions will contact the violin but usually, they do not. Either way is fine though. It just depends on your style of chin rest. Hope that helps!

    When there’s quite a bit of cork material stuck firmly to the violin when the old chin rest is taken off how to best remove it without damaging the vanish on the violin?

    • @KennedyViolins
      @KennedyViolins  ปีที่แล้ว

      So, this is one of those issues that has come up for us a few times. The varnish is already damaged if the cork is stuck and doesn’t just come off by brushing it with your finger. We figured what was happening was that the maker doesn’t let the varnish dry completely before installing the chinrest on the violin. To correct this, the spots on the varnish have to be refinished. I have no suggestions other than to acknowledge the varnish is already damaged and I either suggest having a luthier repair it, or just live with the prints it leaves on the finish. It's possible in some instances to remove the cork with a minimum of damage to the varnish underneath with some gentle cleaners but it really depends on the type of varnish your violin has oil, lacquer, or spirit. So, without knowing this, I can't really recommend anything. More than likely, you'll just have to take the violin to a reputable shop and have the violin's finish retouched by a professional.

    hello dear Kennedy.
    In order to change the height of the bridge, what is the standard distance between the strings and the lower and uper part of the grift?

      This page may offer some info that you'd like: kennedyviolins.com/pages/orchestral-instrument-setup Also, we usually shoot for about 3.5mm from the top of the fingerboard to the E side (near the bridge) and about 5mm for the G side. Some may go a little lower or higher but we find that a compromise between the highest and the lowest specs works the best for the most people.

    ¿What can i do if my chin rest slips from the violin?

    • @WhiteDragon689
      @WhiteDragon689 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would just add or replace with glue the material that touches the violin. Cork is a good one to use. Leather, even felt would do for a while. Just avoid wood or plastic contact with the violin.

      Ashley Godfrey Haha I bet you look like a pro with that wee £9 bendy wire!

    • @WhiteDragon689
      @WhiteDragon689 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made one with a piece of wire and thin dowel or thin shaped wood. Make sure the wire part is not long enough to touch the back of the violin or you will scratch it really bad! Just make a small hole in the end of the dowel and super glue it in place. Cost? I already had the stuff.
