I am glad I found you channel. I am 67 years old and have decided to learn the violin. I played clarinet and baritone horn 50 years ago, and I miss music. I do sing, but I feel the need to make music and your channel and your unbounding enthusiasm has convinced me to take the plunge! Thank you for the inspiration!
Yay a new video!!!! We appreciate all you do, especially with being more inside right now! Learning violin as a hobby/side instrument at this time and your videos are such an encouragement!
Hello. For a few months now, I've been thinking about returning to the violin after a 13-year break. I'm 24 years old now and I thought it's too late... then I found your profile and made a decision - I buy a violin! We'll see what comes out of it. So thank you and good luck in your journey, xo ;)
Did you notice a difference in tone with the boxwood? On my instruments, it make a big difference. Even changing chinrests of the same type of wood, changes the tone notably. Also where the clamp is on the instrument, side mount vs clamp over endblock.
Your tail piece looks great! I gad to move my chin rest due to tentiin to my left index finger but olaced the chin rest to far to the left side, made the G string sound horrendous! The issue was the chin rest was interfering with the base bar and I corrected it by moving the chin rest a few mm to the right. I also have the Wittner fine tune pegs, they are like a dream! I gave just had a wolf tone on my G string and the site you mentioned in your video may help me correct it. I also cut my own bridges with some success so far, this way, I can change the width of the strings if I wish.
I ended up switching from a Kaufman chinrest to a customized Brandt chinrest for the same reason. Similar to your Teka, the Brandt has a high lip on the right side and almost no lip on the left side, while the Kaufman lip goes all the way across.
@@MarijkeViolin Definitely more comfortable without the left side digging into my jaw and neck. I'm surprised that chinrest patterns with a partial lip aren't more popular.
Exactly! Also, most people seem to have a Guarneri, but my jaw has no grip on that one. A rest with a lower left side seems to suit a lot of bony, pronounced jaws. I'm glad I switched to the Teka model, but I would like to try every single model one day, just to see and feel how they play. 🙂🎻
When you install the tailpiece when you have your set length with the tailgut, you should really burn and melt the ends of the gut to melt into the screw's, because often they will pop out. Keep in mind the tailgut stretches and has to be a certain distance between the bridge.
@@MarijkeViolin ohhh I see, that's good! I actually recently changed mine as well from a witner to and ebony one!!! It enhanced my sound slot and made my violin more resonant! Hope you enjoy the sound your violin makes!
Marijke, how many hours did you go to your teacher for lessons, I'am 13 years old and I'am going to master my second instrument. So it would be very helpful to know that. Thannkksss
Yes, the bridge of the violin is curved so you can play one string at the time, depending on the angle of your bow. Maybe it helps to look at your bow while playing the D string and make long strokes from tip to frog and back, trying to keep the bow at the same angle. Later you can do that on the A string. Once you got that down, you can alternate between the D and A string.
I would like to, but I have pegs with integrated finetuners which are glued into the peghead. Only a luthier can change them, but they only come in black and these pegs are a dream to work with. So I'll stick with these for a while. 🙂
After a while you get comfortable with tuning the pegs. And I have pegs with built-in finetuners, so actually I don't need finetuners at all. But I have one on the E string because I'm used to it and it looks fancy. 😎
Steel strings are less stretchy than perlon or gut, so tiny movement makes a big pitch change, hence fine tuners on steel e string, or on all strings if using d'arrio helicore set. Wittner pegs are even better choice.
Thanks! Very informative! I have a new old vintage German violin on its way (in the Post) to me. I wondered if I’ll have to change the tailpiece because in the photos the current wooden tailpiece looks to be a bit old and beaten.
Someone destroyed this video, by overdubbing with horribel noise that doesnt do any good, but prevent people over 60, or having english as our second language to flee, because we simply cant follow the spoken information, when its disturbed this way. So leave it out please. This is not a cheap commercial or russian porn, that people automatically connects this lousy backing sounds with, or is it?

Omg I didn't know that it was possible to change them. Thanks for teaching me something!
Yes you totally can!
I want that exact type of tailpiece and chinrest! They are so pretty!
Yes! Everything is linked in the description box btw. 🙂

Yes, I noticed a more open sound. 🙂
wow that looks really great.
its so pretty 🤩
Wow thats pretty look elegant than its used to be, i'm also jealous of your chinrest...😅😆
Yes, I was done with the plastic. 🙈

Sounds good! 😊👍🎻

Yes indeed, I did that too. Didn't want to make the video too lengthy though.

Yes, it's definitely more resonating now! 😊
Great job, your violin looks awesome. You were really lucky not to have had your soundpost fallen off. I was scared for you.
Thanks! I was scared of that too, so I kept it laying flat on my desk all the time.
Does the tailpiece affect the sound
What is the model of the chinrest that appears in 4:20?
Marijke, how many hours did you go to your teacher for lessons, I'am 13 years old and I'am going to master my second instrument. So it would be very helpful to know that. Thannkksss
I've been taking weekly 30 minute lessons from the start, which is 4 years now.
Is it true you never want to have the chin rest touching the tail piece?
I think so, yes. It would probably vibrate.
Hi Marijke, This is good information
Thank you so much !
Hello! Im new to violin and i cant do open string d and a. I just bump into another string. Are they supposed to be elevated?
Yes, the bridge of the violin is curved so you can play one string at the time, depending on the angle of your bow. Hi. Thanks for all. I want to buy a violin and start your videos. Can you help me to choose a violin?
I suggest to rent a violin from a luthier. If there's no luthier in your area: I've heard good stories about the Stentor 2 violin.
What electric violin do you use? Im in the market to replace my current one
Hi, I have a Yamaha SV-200. You can use your own chin rest and shoulder rest with it, which is a big plus.
@@MarijkeViolin thank you, ill keep it in mind
Omg it has been 3 weeks. I missed your content a lot I had nothing to watch 😭
Yes, I know. Work started again and I've been busy. But there's plenty of stuff in progress. 🙂
Marijke Violin what is the difference between your new tailpiece and old one?
Hi, may I ask if if the Teka chinrest is heavier than the Guarnari one?
I don't know, but I think It'll depend on the material. A guarneri is bigger than a teka, so possibly.
Tetul tamarind wood good sound
You also should change the pegs its ebony

@@MarijkeViolin nice
Why do pro violinists use a single fine tuner .....?
After a while you get comfortable with tuning the pegs. And I have pegs with built-in finetuners, so actually I don't need finetuners at all. But I have one on the E string because I'm used to it and it looks fancy. 😎
@@MarijkeViolin I get it it looks cool...😎

How's the Tonica E String?
I like it, it's not harsh. I am currently experimenting with different E strings though, I had a few spare ones.
Did you check the sound post after you changed ?😂
Yes, I did.
Thanks! Very informative! I have a new old vintage German violin on its way (in the Post) to me. I wondered if I’ll have to change the tailpiece because in the photos the current wooden tailpiece looks to be a bit old and beaten.
Thank you! And that's definitely doable by yourself. Have fun with your violin!
im gonna do the same with my tailpiece i need a beter wooden one
Nice! 😊👍
It's impossible to remove the chinrest
A chinrest can be removed by unscrewing the mounts.
Nice! My violin broke☹☹☹
Im aso a tekarist chinrest user too on my violin hahahha
Muito bom....

Should definitely let a proper luthier do that job
That depends. I asked my teacher if I could do this myself, and he gave me advice.
