    NOTE: As we are getting this question a lot in the comments, we wanted to point out that 红茶 (hong2cha2, literally "red tea") refers to "black tea" in English, and 黑茶 (hei1cha2, literally "black tea") refers to "dark (or fermented) tea" in English.
    _Study hints:_
    1. Subtitles of *translation* in multiple languages can be turned on/off at the video settings.
    2. Playback *speed* can also be adjusted at your convenience.
    Hope you enjoy this little story! 加油!

    I believe the best way to learn a language especially when focusing to maximise vocabulary is to get the meaning from the context and read as much as possible. That's why I subscribed to this channel. It's been 20 days since I started learning Chinese, and I found these videos much more useful!

    0:27 Doesn't 红茶 means "red tea" ?
    Why do we translate it as "black tea" in English? I'm sure it's the proper translation, but I'd like to know how it is that way.

    • @MandarinClick
      @MandarinClick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, indeed. In Mandarin 红茶 literally means "red tea", and 黑茶 is another kind of tea: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermented_tea . We are afraid we don't know the origins of the translation as "black tea" instead of "red tea", but maybe some other viewer can help us.

    • @rexnemo
      @rexnemo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that the red tea describes the colour of the drink itself as black tea gives a delightful reddish colour to the infusion . So I guess there is more than one way to look at the drink . As an English tea drinker , I thought about this when I first saw the description in a Chinese textbook .

    • @MandarinClick
      @MandarinClick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as we know, what in Western countries is called "black tea" is what in Chinese is known as 红茶, while 黑茶 is an older kind of tea known as "fermented" or "dark" tea en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermented_tea. But we are not experts! And the world of tea is endless... Maybe we should ask 王先生. ;)

      I think it kind of translates as "at the same time" but is used like "while" e.g. "while they talked, they drank tea". "一边" must be used in both phrases in Mandarin though unlike "while" in English.

    Why "yi ge cha bei" and not "yi bei cha"?

    • @ispeakmandarin
      @ispeakmandarin ปีที่แล้ว

      一个茶杯 emphasizes the tea cup regardless of whether there is tea in tea cup, but mostly the expression 一个茶杯 indicates that it's an empty tea cup.
      一杯茶 just means a cup of tea

    Doesn’t Hong Cha mean Red tea?

      Thanks a lot for your comment! 红茶 (hong2cha2, literally "red tea") refers to "black tea" in English, and 黑茶 (hei1cha2, literally "black tea") refers to "dark (or fermented) tea" in English.

      Hi, thanks for your comment! Please note what in Western countries is called "black tea" is what in Chinese is known as 红茶, while 黑茶 is an older kind of tea known as "fermented" or "dark" tea en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermented_tea.

      @@MandarinClick I noticed that also. So what we are calling black tea is your red tea while the black or dark tea is known as a fermented tea. Good to know!
