  • @just_here_to_learn
    @just_here_to_learn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +115

    Understanding the difference between reading for pleasure and reading to learn is critical.
    When reading for pleasure you have the flexibility to read in almost any manner you like. If the book is bad or doesn’t connect with you don’t feel compelled to finish it. Move on to another book that resonates more with you. Additionally, I often read more than one book at a time as I think variety keeps me more engaged in the book I’m reading at that moment.
    Lastly, I do think it is important to keep in mind that books are another form of art. And great writers think carefully about every aspect of the book they write. This results in an intimate one sided street with the reader because the writer is sharing their personal story and perspective. Therefore, I think the important job of the reader is to respect this vision and give the book the moment it deserves. You don’t have to like the book or agree with the message but I think you can still respect it. I always try to keep that in mind as I read and I think it makes me a more appreciative and attentive reader.
    Just my long-winded 2 cents.

    • @hibak8196
      @hibak8196 4 ปีที่แล้ว +94

      Allow me to disagree. My reading skills weren't that great when I started reading so I did skip some descriptions I found tedious and I still do sometimes. I can always go back and reread these things if 1) the book is worth it and 2) the info in it turns out to be important. It's always much more fun to be able to read without having to skip/skim stuff, but I'd rather read and build my skill gradually than feel bad about not understanding everything and getting bored or giving up.
      After doing some rereads, I agree it is a fuller experience as I said, but also skipping just didn't have that massive of an effect to take away the "actual finishing" of the book.

  • @VikingSchism

    I can't do Kindles, I need to have a physical book in front of me. Skipping is dumb, especially when reading fiction. Maybe it's just the books that I read but if you skip anything then you can miss massive pieces of foreshadowing or setup for later in the book. The way to read more is to read more. Make time for it, develop your reading speed so you can read without losing comprehension. One final note is that if you're desperate to read more books then just read shorter ones
    In other words, read what's interesting to you, there's no silver bullet that'll make you magically read 100 books in a year. You have to give it time, and even then there are other factors such as book-length and the complexity of the writing

I grew up on the Wheel of Time series and absolutely love it. I hope you like it too. I will say that unfortunately you may want to just skip book 6 up until the last three books written by Brandon Sanderson. I really like Brandon Sanderson as an author in his own right and I was so happy when he took over the series after Robert Jordan's death. The reason why you should skip books 6 up until the last three are that the plot doesn't move forward at all. It's like Robert Jordan loved the series so much he didn't want to finish it.

    I think knowing that you can skip some parts in a book is really important, I have a habit of trying to count how much new things I've learned compared to how much I've read every time I finish a book, and I concluded that most of the times it wasn't enough compared to the time I spend reading and that's because sometimes even if we get the point that the author is talking about we continue reading all the examples or we see some concepts that are repeated in many books which we already know (this is always the case in self dev books) but we read them again just to say at the end that " I have read this book entirely "and not feel guilty to add it to your Goodreads account.
    i think from now on i ll try to skip some parts in non fiction books howerver in fiction books i m steal not okey with skipping because its like skipping part in movie once you strat doing this you cannot stop and for me i think its a bad habit.

    Thanks! I’m still on the beginner stage and currently trying to build a habit of reading books but I got stuck for a while because I wanted to finish the book which was surprisingly boring. However, I already moved past it and started to read new ones.

    Hi Dr Ali
    Your advice and the affects of Covid 19 left me no choice but to switch from books (unable to visit bookstores plus the increased 3 week delivery time for online purchases) to a kindle with the greatest advantage of having access to thousands of books instantly. Can't wait for it to arrive in a few days' time.

      Yes. In fact ancient greek philosophers shared the same beliefs. Some people just read many books with a superficial understanding.

    ... i started reading 5 years ago, i tried to read a light novel because i couldn't find any manga that i didn't know or that was to my liking but i couldn't even finish the first page 😂 and 1 year after that i was so bored because i couldn't find any good mangas that i tried it again, reading novels with my basic english and trying to understand it actually made fun and i couldn't... I CAN'T stop reading, i'm reading 24/7 i finish 200 chapters or even more in ONE DAY. Before, my parents wanted me to stop playing videogames and go out or read something, now they want me to stop reading and think that i'm crazy 😂😂😂
    For me, reading is watching a movie with my imagination, i don't even have to think anymore as long as i read my brain builds the world for me. If i don't read for a day or two then i get depressed 😅 btw just today i decided to buy a kindle paperwhite it should arrive in 1 week, really excited about it 🤣
