I love watching this. Pipe drumming you have no choice. I had jazz experience and corps drumming, but pipe drumming... Everytime I pick up sticks to this day, thirty years, I pick them up traditional. I was taught matched and on a set will go back, but ... I love traditional. I love the feel of it, and I'm a lefty so I like it more. You can crack it and do a lot.
I have watched other Gary video's, or vignettes as he likes to call them, and the thorough explanation you see on this vignette, is on all his clips. Every clip that Gary uploads is greatly appreciated.
I've worked on my left hand traditional grip always for a long time. In a right-handed grip I favor my left hand so much that now my right hand sucks!! For real!! I find I now have to develop my right hand more to catch up to my left in the traditional grip!! Go figure. So now I'm always looking for the right hand techniques. I know it sounds silly but it's true!! Thanks for the help buddy. It's always good to share what we know. 🙃🥁
You are a master! I've watched your playing clips which are fabulous, but you have helped me to get a handle on how to play traditional grip that is not only comfortable for me, but makes sense. Keep on preaching the truth, and someday I hope to get a Skype lesson with you.
You are speaking my language..... drumstick control and trigger control. I just don’t have that speed..... maybe someday because this Ol’ Vintage Drummer is still working on it! Thanks and Blessings!
This cat is a BMF on this shit @ 3:10-3:17. Effortless and highly impressive. A real pro. Great instructor, as well. Been a drummer since 1969 and still impressed to the hilt by players of this caliber.
You're not too shabby yourself Mike Clark! HaHa! You're funk drumming innovations are fantastic! I'm a friend of Gary's and studied with him. He is a great drummer and teacher. Do you still do clinics? If so I'd love to attend one. You are truly one of the all time greats! Cheers!
I as a jazz drummer prefer to use traditional grip over matched. Although I do use matched grip from time to time. I have some trouble playing a left handed one hand roll as my wrist doesn't really move that much. I use a push pull method when doing it but I can't play it very fast. I want to found my own band and play charts. I've been playing for about 20 years. I love Buddy Rich and this video is helpful to jazz drummers who use traditional grip.
Amazing stuff my friend! I've been looking for a vid like this. To use my index finger or my middle finger or my thumb!?? I've been digging and digging and now I finally know what to practice. I'm going to use my thumb (for single stroke rolls)...nothing gets in the way and you're right where you need to be when you want to play anything else! God love ya! Thanks a lot! D
…Can I practice the thumb motion when I am just sitting without sticks….or even just with the sticks as in air practice? Seems it would at least get the thumb use to the motion? Thanks.
Wonderful. Thank you so much. Best left hand technique video EVER! So, if you had kept going, from the point at which you said that you keep the wrist motion the same, but the stick goes higher when you remove the index finger.... Basically, so you can do accents just by adding or removing the index finger right?
Is the left hand fulcrum supposed to be a little higher than the fulcrum on the right hand, because your right hand fulcrum seems lower on the stick--than your right hand? I have Vic Firth sticks, and the fulcrum for my left (and right) hand is between the flag and the 'H'; but slightly covering the H. This is something I've been puzzling over since I started playing traditional (6 months ago). Buddy Rich had his left fulcrum very high on the stick. But Jojo Mayer keeps his fulcrum a fair amount lower on the stick. If anyone has some advice/suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
This is perhaps one of the best videos on TH-cam about the traditional grip. I have trouble making the thumb and the index work in unison though. Does these two have to touch forming a cross the way many of the other tutorials on traditional grip teach? This is in regard to playing basic single strokes. Thanks.
Keith Dunlap i use a rubber O-ring size number eight. It helps to keep the stick where it belongs so it doesn't slide like you're talking about. I get them from Lowe's
Thanks... for me it seems as I trigger my index finger to throw the stick down .... the stick does not travel at a 90 degree angle to the drum head... just the motion of moving the index finger towards you makes the stick not travel up and down but at an angle toward my body... driving me nuts!!! Any suggestions? thx, Dave
I'm switching over to traditional grip because the best drummers in the world all have better control, speed and more techniques. I watched Ted Mackenzie, but like I told him when i called him, I need to take lessons with a human right there watching me so i don't do something wrong or develop bad, wrong habits. So, how is it possible to learn the correct way to learn traditional position when you are not here to see what i'm doing every second?
I know a guy who is trying to do this.He is fucking useless at drum rudiments and embarrasses himself trying this single stick stroke.I giggle to myself,he thinks he is the next Buddy Rich.
This is without a doubt one of the best instructional videos I've ever watched. Keep 'em coming!!
Among the best demonstration of left hand stroke movement and position. Looks so natural -
By far, the best explanation of the left-hand traditional grip.

I love traditional grip. You make me love this technique even more. You use it beautifully. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
best instructional i have ever seen on traditional grip, hands down, including all the pro videos. thanks very much! very helpful stuff
You are a master! I've watched your playing clips which are fabulous, but you have helped me to get a handle on how to play traditional grip that is not only comfortable for me, but makes sense. Keep on preaching the truth, and someday I hope to get a Skype lesson with you.
This is the best and simplest explanation I have seen. Thank you Gary!
Well demonstrated, clean technique- very helpful. I liked the language you use in your explanations - very clear.
This is great stuff. So essential for playing the snare drum.
This just blew my fuckin mind. What an incredible help. A million thank yous for your gracious and vastly informative knowledge.
I play both traditional and matched. However I use mainly wrists and finger control when playing on the kit.
ATTENTION: THIS IS THE BEST LESSON ON THE LEFT HAND TECHNIQUE!!!
You are speaking my language..... drumstick control and trigger control. I just don’t have that speed..... maybe someday because this Ol’ Vintage Drummer is still working on it! Thanks and Blessings!

This is totally informative. Gary is a great drummer and a great teacher he knows how to break it down...I just watched this three times

Shows everything you need to be able to do, how and why to do it. Very good!👍
Great explanation: really helps. Must practice keep stick at angle thanks

Highly detailed video. Thank you for the excellent tutorial
Thank you! I enjoyed your lesson.
This is so well done that I, a non drummer, want to make the effort to see if I can produce a reasonable stroke. See how good you are .........

...much discussion about thumb....keep it « closed » with the turn of the hand. Not tight nor « back ». Great instruction video. Thanks
This video really helped me a lot in a short time. Thanks
Best teacher!!! Your explanation of double stroke in previous videos is treasure! Is that Spivack, Gruber approach to technique?
This helped me immensely thank you ,thank you...
This is such a good video thank you so much
great video you touched on my issues with traditional grip would love to take a Skype lesson with you thanks .
Precious information. Thanks a lot!
Excellent! Thank you for posting.
Please get your video portal up. 18 dollars for a year of your instruction is a no brainer.
Great lesson Excellent. What should I be practicing for speed ? Both open and closed finger control ?
Sei veramente bravo grazie ho visto meno ascoltato sto a roma comunque grazie mi serviva vedere la posizione delle dita grazie ancora

What stick do you use?
Hey I am a beginner and I can't stop my stick from sliding forward in my left hand when in the traditional grip, any tips

Where do I put it on the stick or my finger? If my finger which one

I have the same problem. Were you ever able to correct it? If so, what helped you the most?
Great explanation of the grip and it's variations. Thanks for posting.
