There are some great drum lesson vids on TH-cam ((lots in fact) But Randall mentions some finer points i haven't found in other lessons. These have been very helpful to me indeed. Thanks Randall for taking your time to share your knowledge in these great easy watching vids :)
That´s the first video here on youtbe regarding the traditional grip bounce stroke that does it for me. Thank you very much for your videos. Great stuff.
Very intuitive and helpful. One question, i see how the rebound of the drum stick on the practice pad is more responsive than playing on actual drums?. Are my drum heads not tightened enough to produce a responsive hit like the pad? Thx for your practical Videos
Great video. I'm trying to get better at speed with traditional grip but my biggest problem is trying to play a strong back beat with my left hand as I seem to somehow buzz the stroke when I attempt to apply more power. Do you happen to have a video on that subject?
This is excellent stuff Randall! I have to agree with all of these comments. I hope I can ask you a question... When doing these exercises, I have to open my left hand in order to get the fast single stroke roll, (I bounce the stick with my index finger). When actually holding the stick in my left hand, the stick hits my ring finger when doing a single stroke roll. I have to open my left right up and get my fingers out of the way in order to get any kind of speed. By doing so I am losing control of the stick, plus it's harder to stop and start quickly and do accents. Do you understand what I mean? Do you have any advice? Thanks a million, Randall! Keep these great videos coming! Cheers!
when doing free strokes, do you feel the stick pressing back against the underside the of the forefinger more or do you feel the pressure more in the web of the thumb?
+Justin Montgomery When doing the rebound stroke properly you actually feel the stick very stable between both those points. It is a great feeling when the stick feels "locked in" to your hand between the forefinger on top and the webbing of your thumb. It flies with total relaxation, but you are in control. Takes some practice, but it comes. Stick should stay connected to your skin at both point.
Hey! thanks for sharing all this. I just have a problem, from the very first exercise "the dribbling exercise" my stick slides! I put the stick were you say and my right index finger seems to move along with the momentum of the stick ... but at some point my grip ends up in the but of the Stick :/ And i´ve been playing traditional for several years.
Make sure you keep your left hand holding the stick completely still. just cradle the stick and do all the motion with the right hand finger and bounce of the drumhead.
I'm really trying to Learn how to play traditional and I think I'm doing it right, it's really frustrating and so uncomfortable in my left hand and I guess because it's just a "new" thing for me. Any advice?
+Pro_Gamer38 Thanks for you comment and question. My first thought would be to just hold the stick in rest position and reveiw through all the aspects of proper grip and hand position. Tension is usually the cause of pain. Take a deep breath and relax. Make sure your neck, shoulder, and upper arm are relaxed and there is no tension. relax and make sure you wrist is in the proper position and then focus on practice the various motions smoothly. If you are not in pain and its just "weird" then keep going and practicing until the grip and motions become more natural and comfortable for you. Good luck!
,,,yes ROTATE that’s the word....you can see it in the thumb moving with the rotation. Great demonstration. Thanks
Thanks, perfect lesson. Flying So relaxed….Controlled bounce…all fingers on, thumb forward. Index finger gets more action. Great demonstration
