- After several weeks of planning, we were ready to get the materials we needed and start the construction phase. The Just cats team gave us the keys to the candy store and it was time to get down to business. Although, as we all know, sometimes, not everything go according to plan.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give it thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :)

Dig this project, but there's other amazing things with this video; there are still people in the world that trust their keys to another, trust you with their tools, trust you not to cut your fingers off & trust you are not a lawsuit with legs. Even if you are related or fast friends, you ought to feel pretty damn good about it.
Sometimes the hardest decision is when to admit that your own project has a flaw, and to go back to the drawing board.
Bravo to you, and I'm glad you made that decision this early in the project.
The further you get into it, the decision gets even harder.
Finally we find out he’s a former cabinet maker! Explains the building skills. I built the inside of my van out with no experience, and now I love seeing others solve similar problems. Thanks for recording the process, and thanks for all the lessons!
Now that is the way I would like to go to Home Depot, no traffic lights with lots of lines, and a beautiful boat trip with scenery!
The boundless energy of these two is exhausting! I am so envious. Dan is part “Energizer Bunny” but Kika brings out his fun side. Their ingenuity and talents are amazimg. Having been a boater for 20 years watching brings back so many memories. Always amazed how Dan can fit himself (he looks like a six-footer) into spaces my 5’6” self would never go! Be safe and enjoy!
What an amazing gift from Just Cats to have access to their workshop. Awesome!!! Dan the man in the sailor man land candy shop!!!! Good call Dan - the KISS method is best for most projects - Keep It Simple Stupid :p Glad to see you decided to simplify the head design. I am sure it will save head aches down the road. Great video! Cheers!
Always had a passion for woodworking, I never missed the opportunity to check out the old stuff. When carpentry was done by hand. From the Polynesian canoes to ancient egypt. Before everything was hardware, it was pure ingenuity and genius . Armed with a compass a drill, chisel and hammer. If they wanted it ,they made it . Many skills joined the dinosaurs when power tools became the norm. I hope you get opportunity to walk those old ships and just admire it's construction . I never make anything " normal" anymore , years of kitchen and bath remodeling out the window.... no more. and no more hardware , joinery and dowels for everything. I even made my own block planes, the best I ever owned. Have fun with it, damn the torpedos and full speed ahead.
Not everyday you get to see a grown man playing with a floating bath mat. Two thumbs up!
So what sort of architects are you guys. You actually can do all the work, like everything. Definitely not just designers, its great to see you at work. I'm inspired to fix up my house now ha ha. And you do it together! Its all good, don't be put off by the head set back. Everything I think is harder in limited space on a boat. Great idea though, would have been amazing but you can die making your dreams come tru ha ha...good enough is actually good enough, really! I'm sure 2.0 will be great! Everything you do works out beautifully, you should be v proud of what you accomplish!
I know that there must be an occasional speed bump between the both of you but admiring the way you two just work and flow together is so inspiring...You're amazing Mentors for an old fart like me...And may more relationships be just like yours...It'd sure make this world a better place...And we could really use that right now.
Thank You...
Ha, I could Feel the fan as soon as you turned it on. 3:51
I also love the shopping (And How you go shopping) videos
And of course all the fabricating jobs on UMA... ✅👍👌
Love the shirt, Just bought a couch with a catamaran wrapped round it ..
Oh WOW!!! Access to that stocked workshop would be about the greatest DIY gift ever for doing any and all boat projects. WOW WOW WOW, I'm so jealous/happy for you to have had use of that.
I like that you are not only showing your successes but also when things get a little more complicatet.... Congratulations with your plan 2.0
Dinghy ride to Home Depot ... now that's a serious cruiser!
And everything is sexier in slow motion!!!
Thanks for sharing!
You have a magic carpet! Adapting to Plan B ... or C ... or ... is just as important as Plan A isn't it, just have to roll with it 👌
I guess you were the only people to go to Home Depot by boat for a while:-)! Another great video!
Oh no...Dan gets access to the whole shop? Like a kid in a candy store. Mcgyver couldn't be any happier! Njoy my brother, njoy!...👊
If Home Depot were smart, they’d put out a small dock for dinghies, and a few signs in the river pointing to the shop. LOL Loving your videos btw, and a new follower. Love your do-it-yourself attitude.
Cant wait to see the finished product! That workshop looked insane. I'm getting workshop envy. Lol.
This made me smile, the number of boats I have received the most wonderful designs for fit out and then the reality hits and its back to the drawing board. Great video as always guys, enjoy the air con
Your design and idea was great, ...but sometimes simple works too. Thank you for sharing, we are enjoying your progress. Safe travels.
Hey Dan and Kika, Just binge watched your vids, I thought I was the Meister of fixing a boat on the cheap and coming up with alternative solutions. Dan Mate hats off to you, you do some incredible stuff and YOU is the MEISTER. But forget the shower curtain, 2 pack epoxy, varnish and paint, make it a wet room & a bilge pump on a hose from the shower drain and out the sink outlet.
Cheers guys love your stuff
Those guys at Just Cats really hooked you up!!! Don't feel bad Dan, no plan ever survives first contact! Congrats.
We were at Just Catamarans doing boat stuff. We'd only had the boat a month or so, and I had to get her in and out of a really tight spot for the first time. Everyone there was great coaching me.
Hey guys, just binge watching your journey. Haha looks like the architect’s conception vs build ability has hit a snag! 🤣 love watching your rebuilds and ingenuity around problems 👍🏻
I know it may look hard but so far i think you guys have done well on the head modification. Think it over !!! don't give up so easily
The folks at Just Catamarans are treating you right!!
Nice video work.
Great job with the dinghy run to Home Depot!!
Nice layout thinking. Thrilled to see what you came up to.
Enjoying watching all your adventures. We live in Colombia and someday we hope to go around the islands in the Caribbean like you guys do. We are learning a lot from you.
Gratz for your first docking with Uma! That was perfect! Cheers Harry.
Your videos are really interesting. You guys are the real deal.
Wait. No one said “cheers.” How can I stop watching without it?
LOL we wont forget you next time ;)
When all said and done is gonna be great
They Say...If its worth the concept its worth the effort...I have faith that you both will prevail ...Thanks for your Vlog always great content...
I paused at 13:00. You just learned the most important lesson an architect can ever learn... what looks good on paper can be a total nightmare in reality.... take that from someone who has lived with having to solve the problems the clever architect created...
Kika's hair is so beautiful, gorgeous, wow she IS amazing.
You guys make great videos! When she let's her hair down she is a knock out!!!
the gratuitous hair in the wind moment is funny as hell . love you guys
Love your videos guys. Good for you!! By the way, SLV in the slip behind you. Go figure!!
the KISS approach never fails, definitely don't dive too far into complexity unless you have the time to make a few attempts. Love your channel guys, you've really woke up a 20 year old desire to sail in my heart, unfortunately i'm a bit tied down with the internet.. Maybe after 2020 when StarLink launches!
Great video"
I guess as we used to say in the Navy' Damn the bad luck !
May be put he sink on a drawer type thingamado ?
Thanks for sharing.
Hoh Hoh Hoh...look at all those fittings and stainless hardware. Your messing with my addiction buddy. Nice video. And Yesss. Home Depot IS my stop for all my marine grade items. Been using them for years with no rust problems. Just need to shop smart and build well and everything will last and work. My boats are testament to this. (Ya ya,...you naysayers. Not to worry, West Marine will take your money with a smile).
I used the exact same peel and stick tiles to cover the countertop in my NYC apartment.
Wow! Another great episode. Dan you are the craftsman! I had my boat docked in a canal right around the corner from you for several months. Small world. Uma 2.0 is looking sweet
It is really good that you are planners, Nothing nicer than a well thought out plan! STOP! In the Army(any branch of the service) you must make a plan and everyone involved must know the plan and in most cases must practice the plan.... However, as soon as you engage the plan, almost every time, the plan MUST be changed, usually on the fly, to meet the actual situational objectives.
Ah man! I've had a few (or 70) projects that went that way! Haha :) Part of success is knowing when you have to change the course to get an end result. :) Looking forward to seeing the outcome!
wow. solid wood boards, don't seem many of those in boats these days. but far easier to work with.. can't wait to see the result.
Not many live aboard boaters do a Solid Works model of their designs. Love your architectural sensibilities.
Great work! The projects you guys tackle are impressive! Best wishes.
is that Sailing La Vagabonde at 14:52?
Hey pity about your plans , but I think you were onto something , cant wait to see what you come up with next ,exciting to have a blank canvas , practical and innovative solution sure to be found onboard Uma somewhere.
Full workshop access? You guys fell on your feet there!!!
Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men... It was a cool idea though! the drawings looked pretty wicked. Good luck!
Don't worry be happy. Try and find a solution to reinvest with an impermeable material to avoid having to hang hype shower curtains..
Showering in he head is a good way of washing down all and keeping clean the head!😊
You can do it!😁💪👍
As a fellow Canadian I was waiting for you to compare the floating carpet to a puck on an air hockey table. :)
Ah, the challenges we encounter taking a project from concept to construction. Regardless of high tech or low tech, the smart money is on the end product being functional and looking great.
Given a choice between making something complicated, and something simple...always chose simple. Complicated things are halfway to broken when they are brand new. "Broken is the enemy. The first and the last. The enemy always wins, but we must fight him anyway."
Little at a time and don't let it overwhelm you.
Bit of a little more than you could fabricate. Glad you chose to admit it and make a change. I'm sure in the long run the revised plan will still be wonderful, especially since you upgrading from a bucket !
My dad Ronald Oakman is your biggest fan I’m Nicholas Oakman he dose not miss one. Just keeps getting better man wicked videos
From Blue River?
Sailing Uma yep you got it from blueriver. I congratulate you on your lifestyle we all dream of living the life you have created for your self I never want sailing uma to end.
U guys are awesome, such a great inspiration
Everything takes time, your head will be finished before you know it, sometimes putting too much thought into a project destroys it, just go with the flow...!!!
Yarmouth Nova Scotia says hello.....you guys rock!!!!!!
If I only had two architects and a couple twenty somethings to rebuild my boat?? Sigh!
Yeah KISS is a great design philosophy.👍😉
Drill some holes in the lazarette cover and play some air hockey 😜
Or get a hamster and give him one hell of a magic carpet ride ... ok, yeah, I’m a huge Steppenwolf fan, and older than dirt!
Hey me also, did you eat dust to cause of being so poor... We added ants to our dirt back then .. be safe bud,
Y'all are amazing... DIY king and Queen.. always enjoy learning. Great entertainment. I do have a question. How bad is it when you are in the middle of the ocean in a very bad storm. What happens if lightning hits the boat.? Or even close to you.?
The magic flying carpet!
Best hair. Ever!
i would have loved to see your design come to life.
Wow That cabit you showed on the computer that you designed looks like it belongs on a 200 million dollar mega yacht! The only thing missing was electric motors and hydrolics....LOL! I said it before and I'll say it again. You really should think about designing your own line of boats. You have the experience of living aboard that translates into what will work and won't, and you guys are chuck full of great ideas! It would be a natural, best of all you could do it while you sail and continue the adventure! Keep vids coming they're great. Can't wait to see your completed head!
Can't wait to see how it turns out! I have to say, though, my boys (9 and 11) we're bummed there were no out takes or bloopers! 😆👍
also, good job on the editiggggg, your B-Roll is on point these days ;)
I'm sure your head will turn out great regardless, but I thought you would hinge the sink cabinet like you did your table, and then just use a barrel bold to lock it open/closed. I was guessing PVC pipe for the plumbing. Can't wait to see how it all turns out. Cheers!
Amazing how handy you are
I discover that Home depots on the florida coast carry a lot of Marine grade stuff paints, etc.
8:30 min. "Sailing La Vagabonde" 😁
sure was. can't miss that symbol on their bow. I think Kika framed the shot perfectly.
oh that dingy.... its been through a lot. haha
you guys are legends! come to LA, ill take ya SAILING!
Excellent 🙌👍
Sad, your plan looked so good. I think that your idea with the sink sounds great but realise that the boat does have move while crossing the Atlantic. So what you need in my opinion is a small, deep sink to prevent the water swaps out.
Did you think of using rubber hinges? Easy, fast and simple DIY solution.
Ben, take a think about one of the smallest HomeDepot AC units, think about a box that let it snap onto the deck-hatch. only in harbor, but heck, all you can eat AC when on shore power. Just saying.
He Drone guy! Nice seeing a familiar face here.
Bo Lorentzen good with a generator too.
Magic carpet ride on UMA ..
Nice work mate ~
Is that La Vagabond aft and to the left when docking close to Just Catamarans. Is that the SLV logo on the bow?
Yes it is
It'd be fun to see two of the prettiest women in the TH-cam sailing community meet up...
Just sayin'
haha it is. I noticed that immediately and wondered if others noticed. Double checked on their logo and side view of their boat. Sure enough...
Scott In Florida - amen to that!
The next instalment will have them all 'beer chugging' and bathing in each other's egos. This channel started with SOOO much promise but is rapidly turning into just another flavour of self gratifying tripe.
urghh... i unsubscribed from those guys a year ago...
I'm on the edge of my settee awaiting the remodel of your boat's head. I'm wanting to do something different with mine so looking to you for ideas. Good luck. I was sad for you that your design didn't work out though. I could see disappointment in you. :-( All things yield to diligence, though, my friend.
Hey guys, the day you docked near the work shop you had La Vagabond right behind you. Are all the popular channels planning a get together in Miami?
So I'm a Jarhead. Murphy's Laws of Combat #Whatever: No plan survives the first round of combat. Jarhead solution, Adapt and Overcome. You got this.
That swing out sink was a good idea.....to bad it became too difficult to build. I see you are also a SketchUp Make 2017 user. I used AutoCAD for years but switched to SketchUp when I wanted a easier to use 3D platform for my personal projects. I'll be making an offer for my own sailboat, probably next week....thanks in part to you two neat people! I've searched for several years to find one with my idea of the perfect liveaboard sailboat for single handed control at the helm. Want to make a few changes to the sail controls and no electric drive motors....yet!
That really sucks! I hate putting a ton of effort into a project, only to realize that something I hadn't considered scrubbed it!
I built a robot, but had designed the castor wheels in the rear. It was impossible to get it to go in a straight line! I had to completely start over... Cost me a fortune too!
I love your life great on ya looks amazing with an amazing partnership
So funny, when the drive-by happened, i was already wondering will they show getting the camera... hahaha
woot woot great video guys :-)
Cant win 'em all guys! No matter though, we all know you will get it done in the end and done well too :)
Sorry to hear your head layout had to be changed.. But all that matters is you make it work for you.. I hope you two had a wonderful 4th of July, and that you are doing well.. Peace!
Does all that tile weight off center your boat? Or did you account for that? Knowing how much of a planner Dan is I'm sure he thought about it but just curious if it matters at all.
There's a liquid at Home Depot in the tile section called latex acrylic, looks like skim milk, paint or mop it over the areas you want the peel and stick on, let dry, 2 coats is best, will make area super tacky and the peel and stick will adhere much better to ply or wood surface ... fyi
That would of been so easy I wish I had of been there to help you guys.
