    Hi guys. Enjoyed the video.
For outboards I see a lot of people suggesting the Yamaha 2 stroke 9.9 hp. They are good but weigh 80-85 pounds. The Tahatsu/Nissan (same engine different sticker) weighs 57 pounds. It's what most of the charter fleets in the Caribbean use.
If you want to go bigger, the Suzuki 15 or 20 hp (same block, different computer chip) 4-stroke is the weigh to go. It's electronically fuel injected so you won't ever have to clean a carburetor. It weighs 97 pounds. The Yamaha 2 stroke 15 weighs 85 pounds but is louder and uses way more fuel than the Suzuki.
    Good luck and fair winds!

Going across the Atlantic without an inflatable boat that can literally save your life if you had "problems" with UMA is the biggest thing I would be thinking about for the upgrade. You do touch upon Dory having sinking issues. Love you two talking about your trials and tribulations. Lot of knowledge you're passing around.

Hi UMA, you are in my home town. My old stomping grounds too. Lived there from 1959-1989 before life took me to Ga. worked on several boats and for a marine surveyor for awhile when I was in my teens. Have fun!

Love your videos and really great to see you hook up with "Learning the Lines" - Some months ago I suggested to them that they 'look you up'.
Whilst not wishing to sound too much "health and safety" red tape - I was nonetheless a little concerned to note that neither of you use the kill cord when motoring Coco. There have been several serious accidents in recent years, even in small dinghies, with folks falling out and then getting 'run over' by their boat. In UK there have been fatalities over recent years and in July this year a man was found guilty of manslaughter after his girlfriend was killed by their dinghy after they fell out - no kill cord. I know that sounds a bit 'prudish' but as a sailing instructor the RYA (and the RNLI) drums the use of kill cords into us and - after all - its not that much hassle to clip it round your leg...
Keep up the great work - fantastic videos...
    Mike (UK)

My cousin and her boyfriend were motoring from their boat to shore and got hit by a wave, the boat tossed them both and landed right on her boyfriend. His side and right leg looked like a jigsaw puzzle afterwards. It was awful. Things like that can happen in a heartbeat.

Just upstream from the last rail bridge shot is the municipal 'marina' where I parked (and sold) Sylvia G in 2013. There is a memorial ashore marking the spot where the original white settler farmed before the fort of Fort Lauderdale was built. Your video brought back happy memories. Thanks.

Please don’t miss the opportunity to fish for Bass Peacocks in the canal. They can get quite large, they are excellent “action” fighters and ranked as a top choice for flavor and eating quality. They were originally imported to the canals from South American as a way to control other invasive exotic species that thrived in the canals. Although the names suggest they are Bass, because of their large mouth, they come from the cichlids family much like the Oscar.

I've done 5 knots with 2 big people in my inflatable dinghy using our sail kit alone (which is a must have when the engine quits. A good hard floor tied into the transom makes planing easy with less power. You might need your dinghy to move your sailboat in an emergency so a larger engine would help especially in rough weather. Although you can only get on a plane in somewhat clam (or protected) waters... rough waters can really slow ya down especially with 3 or 4 people in the dinghy.

Gidday from OZ, the reason that "Free Range Sailing" chose a porta boat instead of a R.I.B. was so that crocodiles could not climb in and it was easier to store on a small boat. They are circumnavigating Australia in a 30-foot sailing boat, "Mirral", that was built in Australia 50 years ago. They upgraded the porta boat and improved its design enormously. Well worth a look.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah. They’re great for just going to and from shore. But we like to explore on our RIB, which means a larger outboard, which the portaboat just can’t handle.

Fun way to spend the day and see some "different" things !
15 hp is what you need to haul 4 or 6 people. Down side on larger engines is that they tend to have separate fuel tanks. There in weight between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke outboards.. They don't sell 2 stroke engines in the US anymore, but they are still quite popular in most other parts of the world.

Having purchased a similar sized and design dinghy this year (Highfield) I would definitely recommend the lightest 15hp you are able to find. We went with a Mercury 9.9 and with two of us in it we are still not able to get up on plane. People may say "should be able to" which is exactly why I went with the 9.9, but I can say first hand it just does not happen. With just me in it I jump right up on plane and then it is scary fast, but they just do not like weight.

It's not that we didn't know ribs were better, but the porta bote came with Uma and we were living on $50 a week at the time. Great video! You do a fantastic job editing and the subject matter is always interesting. You 2 have made the best choice, in my experience, choosing a hard bottom inflatable. I've been on the water over 50 years and when inflatables started really catching on, 30 some years ago, I made the switch and have never regreted it. Now a little advice from a salty old codger. I think your inflatable has Hypolon tubes, the longest lasting material, PVC doesn't hold so well in the Caribean sun. I know you put your dinghy up on the fore deck. If it is possible, leave the motor installed when lifting the dinghy aboard. I used a spare jib halliard to accomplish this and made a snap on 3 point bridal to lift it level. If you want to plane that little boat with 4 adults a 9.9 or 15 hp motor will be required. Stay far away from the 4 stroke motors. As you probably remember the Carabean is overun with Yamaha motors. That means parts and service will be easy to get. Be sure and stick with a 2-stroke they are available world wide, only here in the USA we have to suffer with the horrible power to weight ratio of the 4 strokes. Ask any marine mechanic about their issues. I can't wait to see your next adventures.

Great feedback. I still enjoy my 10' Porta-bote but it's also new so many of the shortcomings from years past have been worked-out. The transom is definitely better and I like the ability of simply strapping it to the stanchions. I actually ditched my RIB to get this one. Only real downside is the weight limits for the transom which can limit HP, especially when going with a 4-stroke. I believe your 5HP is a 2-stroke correct?

Yet another great episode guys and I really enjoyed it. I know I said something similar to this when I commented on your live feed a couple months back, but since you're getting a bigger motor now you might want to consider getting an outboard mount on Uma herself instead of just hip towing. I say this because one I think it would be more efficient if and when you should have to motor again but also because big easy sailing had a dinghy destroyed by other boaters while hip towing. Apparently some of the power boaters thought it was funny the speed up and increase the size of their wake when they saw what was happening. I imagine in rough Seas it would have the same effect but that's the example I've seen which is all I can go by as I admittedly have zero real-world experience.

That little outboard does a good job. If you went with a 10hp. you could run around 20 knots per hour, but it will also use around 1/3rd to twice as much gas. This is one of those cases of what's better. saving time or money. lol.
And I for one am SO glad you two got this new inflatable because that porta boat made me nervous and I wasn't even in it. lol.

Was in Alaska in Nome and working at a radio station. Had a lunch hour, so ran up to the local river, fishing, paying close attention to the water. Caught a salmon, and just as I pulled it in, had a 737 roar over my head, afterburners roaring as it took off ! Shocked the heck !!! … Recommend this stuff called Stabil (fuel stabilizer) if your not using the gas in your engine. Here, in two cycles (California) people even get this gas without corn gas in it. Helps a lot. Two cycle engines and carbs are finicky.

I realize 4 people can all sit on the pontoons, but it’s hard to tell if you can fit all of your water jugs?? I was wondering if you are able to deflate the pontoons and would that allow you to get it to squeeze into the cabin.... but I suppose if it’s tied down really snug it’s ok but it just seems like wind could sneak under it. We looked at 4 strokes but they are 46kgs minimum which is just to heavy to man handle on and off of the push pit rail when stowing for passage or beaching etc.
FYI ..the Suzuki 9.9hp is a detuned version of the 15hp so for the same weight we went with the extra grunt, super glad we did it’s awesome to be able to tow water toys with the dinghy .🤙

Great Dinghy. I do love my Livingston 8 footer with the Yamaha 8 HP. (it planes with two people but no groceries on board). Its nice to get on a plane and race around and cover distance like its a car. We do 20 miles like its nothing. But you do need to get into the two cylinder engines to avoid the vibration and noise. A 15 hp is the rocket but them bas*&^ are VERY HEAVY in the four stroke engines. The modern two strokes they sell outside of america are nice, (lighter) but once you get use to the quietness and torque of the four strokes, your hooked. Let the Dinghy Adventures begin. Gyus. You must use the cord that conect your rist in the motor switch. It doesn´t matter the sise of the motor, if you fall in the water, you be hurt by the propeller. You have to use it in any condition.

and outboard with no capt go in circles , so you may have to avoid the prop many times , which is why the safety cord was added . also you should always tie your motor to the boat the clamps are known to slip from time to time , in 40 years only had it happen once and having it tied is the only reason did not lose motor , love the video as entertaining as anything on cable and better then most.

I've watched every episode from day one and the one thing that comes across time and time again as that these two young adults seem to think they are indistructable and they don't respond well to suggestions about improving safety, you only need to look at the comments about their propane bottle storage inside the boat (thankfully they've finally got rid of propane} or the comments about life jackets and harnesses. I really enjoy this channel but fear that the impetousness of youth will get the better of them and they will learn a hard lesson - I truely hope I'm wrong

I don't think there is any harm in offering suggestions. The real issue is too many people don't offer them, they use self-righteous tones instead and make it sound like an order or insult them if they don't follow them. And they never state their appreciation for the video, just whine and moan.
I think something like gets better results ---
Hey ... great video. Loved the tour of Fort Lauderdale. We are up here in Saint Augustine and haven't made it down there yet, always great to get a heads up on things.
I noticed that you weren't using the kill switch on the boat. We always use ours, I'm deathly afraid of falling overboard and either getting hit by the prop or just not being able to get back in. It's a bit of a pain at first, but over the years it's become a habit. But I know people who never use them and seem to still be alive, so to each their own.
Anyway .. looking forward to your next video.

Great fun and great to watch ! Ref Coco, suggest Suzuki 4 stroke as great power to weight ratio, incredibly reliable and economic. To get on the plane trim the outboard in initially and as she picks up speed trim the outboard out (you will hear the engine sound less strained and the engine pick up revs as she hits the plane, at which point you cut back revs and maintain the same speed), you move quickly and save fuel. Exploring, then suggest you fit a keel guard (rubber type protector) to the keel, allows you to beach and drag Coco up the beach without causing too much damage. Finally to save pumping out the water install an elephants trunk through the transom which means if she is full of water you lower the trunk, start the engine and go forward, the water self drains, when empty close the elephants trunk, simples ! :) My RIBs have been flooded to transom depth and it works, may be slow at the start but soon clears the water out. Google it and if you get a grey wrinkly articulated thing that's not it, that's an elephant ! LOL Anyway hope that lets you enjoy life more and keep living the dream, please !

If you guys decide to get a new motor, you should get at least a 25 hp. It'll do everything you need, and will give you more entertainment options as well. You can water ski behind it and it'll be powerful enough to get you out of trouble if it happens.

I've owned RIBs for over 10 Years, and its a great choice. If you consider buying a new motor, id buy the Yamaha 9,9/15 (the old ones like 1999). They are very cheap, extremely reliable and very light for its horsepower. I've personally owned a couple, and I have loved them all. You probably wont plane with a 9,9 though.

If you want to keep costs down you might concider keeping your current motor but extending the handle so you can move the body weight more forward. You were so close I bet it's all you need. Of course handling a lighter weight motor has advantages as well.

Hi guys. we upgraded to a Highfield 2.7m Rib and a Yamaha 6HP, 4 stroke before we left the UK. We would agree with everything you said. However, we wanted a 10HP 2 stroke, and you cant get them in Europe as they do not meet the emissions regulations... The daft thing is that the 4 stroke 6HP is so heavy the rib will only plane with one of us in it. If we had a 10HP, 2 stroke it would be less weight and would plane, making the longer journeys more efficient, having a lower environmental impact. The issue appears to be not about Co2 but the lubrication oil? Yet there are oil alternatives that are better or less destructive making 2 strokes as efficient if not better than 4 strokes. 4 Strokes also have very significant weight, manufacturing and component additions that make the overall carbon footprint or energy consumed to produce per horsepower, far higher than a 2 stroke. Finally, if you submerge a 4 stroke it takes a lot of work and sometimes component cost to recover. With a 2 stroke its a vey simple operation and generally if its not electronically controlled, do-able by the owner. So why the push for 4 strokes worldwide? The facts in their entirety dont follow the legislation? Discuss.... Rant over! Sail safe, Ant & Cid xx

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup. We're going 2 stroke again for all the reasons you mentioned. 4 strokes make sense on large center consoles, but little dinks like ours.

    • @SVImpavidus
      @SVImpavidus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

It would be good if someone without any allegiance did the direct comparison in respect to HP, Co2, oil particles, impact environmentally and efficiency over distance? There is a a lot of information in the hive mind regarding water line length, weight, horsepower, etc. Our experience is that overall, two-stroke actually has less impact, given all the data may be better for the environment, considering the added Co2 impact of manufacturing a 4 stroke to a 2 stroke. Hopefully, dilithium crystal chamber technology is just around the corner, or Harry Potter will come back and with the "wand" and we will all have plasma inverter induction drives powered by sun light and the will to get to our destination :-) Ant & Cid xx

2 cycle vs 4 cycle, Since I am working up a AVON W400/WorkBoat, Here is the observation, Weight rating VS Transom Strength.
    Cause and effect:
Always go for the maximum engine weight a rib can handle, which means 2 cycle outboard engines, higher Horsepower ratio per pound.
Example my workboat can take a 40HP 2 cycle, But cannot use a 4 cycle outboard greater than a 25HP, because 4 cycle engines weigh more.
Since UMA is moved with the outboard motor from time to time, I recommend an upgrade in transom strength (I already did this) to mine.
Step one: increase thickness via application of 1/4 inch marine plywood inboard and outboard.
Step two: 1/8 thick aluminum diamond plate, inboard and outboard.
Step three: Aluminum Channel on top of the Transom which the outboard mounts on.
Step four: 1/2 inch welds, aluminum diamond plate to aluminum channel, creating a sleeve that is lowered onto the transom/plywood and bolted in place.
Step five: Mount outboard with lock plate which blocks the outboard motor transom fasteners from being accessed-Theft prevention.
Step six: Tag Rib with GPS locater for recovery should it be lost over board or stolen.
Yes I know this is a workboat upgrade, but I have seen the use your ship to shore dingy has been used.
FYI: Hypalon is Superior to PVC, I prefer 1300 MIL-SPEC Hypalon, specifically original AVON RIBS or workboats, they can be purchased for 3 to 5 hundred dollars and will need about $200 to $300 dollars in repairs and some upgrades, like paint on Transom, patches and wear/rub reinforcements, in the end you end up with a hull that is 14.5 to 16 feet for a lot less than a new rib- love the old boats.

The Sirocco UL280 is only rated for a max 8 HP outboard. That should be enough to get the two of you (Team Uma) on a plane as long as you don't have too much stuff in the boat, maybe 50 pounds or so.
If you want to be able to plane with 4 adults and skin diving gear, you'll probably need a 11.5 to 12' RIB with a 15 HP engine. That's a big RIB and engine for an Uma-size sailboat. If you are like most cruising couples, it will just be the two of you on Uma 90+% of the time. I suggest you get a 8-10 HP outboard for the UL280 and that should provide enough planing capabilities for Team Uma, though just enough with an 8 HP. Talk to Sirocco and see what their thoughts are for putting a 10 HP on the UL280. The extra 2 HP that a 10 HP engine will provide is likely to mean the difference between struggling to get Coco up on a plane with Team Uma and 50-100 lbs of stuff and easily getting on a plane with this load. My guess is that Sirocco will say your guarantee is void if you put more than a 8 HP engine on the rear. I suggest you borrow a 10 HP engine and see how the RIB floats with the extra weight of the 10 HP engine. It will probably be OK since a 10 HP doesn't weigh that much more than a 8 HP. Then consider enhancing the connection between the transom and the hyperlon tubes to handle the additional thrust of a 10 HP engine. Trying to accommodate a 15 HP engine with this approach is probably too much of a leap.
When you have 2 guests on Uma, the four of you can chug along at 4 knots in the RIB.
