8 Tips for Spinning Instructors to Teach Jumps on Tempo to the Music

  • Tips:
    1) Get the song tempo using an app like DJ Player
    2) Do not do jumps to songs faster then 85bpm. bpm is the same as rpm btw!
    3) Have a plan and know the song (jumps the entire song, or just for part, what are the jump intervals, etc.)
    4) You count the beat every time your right leg comes over the top
    5) Count down, not up
    6) Start your count down on an even number like 8, 4 or 2 since music is written on even counts (8 specifically), but for some 3, 2, 1 works for those that hear beat
    7) Don't count the entire time after you've told the class what intervals you're doing
    8) Try to have people switch the jump lead leg for a drill with lots of jumps.

Great vid, I mountain bike from time to time and just have been asked to some spin/ cross training classes and I must say it's challenging. This vid will greatly assist. Thanks again and God bless.

I have been teaching spin for about 2 years now, thinking that I had these count techniques down, but I still learned some things from this video. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks, this is really helpful! Finding the right music for jumps can be difficult. Also the bikes I use have no cadence monitor so I have no idea what RPMs I'm doing!! I just go with the music!

Love your channel! Thanks for all the instructor tips 😅! Wondering how often you change your routines and/or music? Also, whether you ever use notecards in teaching, or what is your view on that? Thanks!

Generally, my routines stay the same while trying some new things from time-to-time. My class has no issues with that, but the music does have to change pretty often to keep things interesting (even if they don't like a song you play, they will give you slack for variety). I generally play the same songs for no more than two classes consecutively then change them out. You can re-use songs later of course. That is just how I do it. I hope it helps.

I was interested of being certified as a Spin instructor. I do identify the BPM which I count on the head and I do have a metronome on my head. I'm also a Music major as well.

I am new to teaching Spin and so confused on jumps. So you want your sings to be 85 bpm and your rpm. What if the song is 110bpm

    • @StudioSWEATonDemand
      @StudioSWEATonDemand  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I believe jumps are best for songs where the BPM are between 60 and 85 RPMs. 110 is too fast unless you use the half beat (55), which is a little slow. And all you do is match your cadence to the beat. So if your song is 70 (or 140) BPM then so is your cadence. Hope that helps!

    RPM is half the BPM

Completely wrong. Only true with a song that is 150 BPM for example and you cut it half and ride on a 75.

I teach rhythm cycling. we count the BPM as how many times ONE leg hits the bottom of a pedal stroke. (I.E. HALF of one rotation… so cut THAT number in half, you have the RPM). A lot of songs (songs that are between 100 and 130 BPM, give or take) can be heard at 2 different beats per minute. A lot of house music, for example, can be used at a March pace for 130ish BPM (65 RPM) or a sprint pace at 260 BPM (130 RPM). The song Crazy in Love by Beyoncé can be climbed with heavy resistance at 100 BPM (50 RPM) or jogged fast at 200 (100 BPM).
