FYI, a Canon EF-S user cannot go wrong buying the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens. It's a very sharp ~35mm equivalent prime and the only gripe anyone should ever have with it is the slow focus speed. It weighs practically nothing, the quality (at f/2.8 even!) is undeniable, the focal length makes it a great all-around prime, it's pretty cheap, and it's freaking f/2.8!

@@666Tomato666 No, f/2.8 is not dark. Most lenses that can reach f/2.0 or better are also not the sharpest at those apertures. Unless you're buying very expensive lenses, f/2.8 is where most fast lenses reach maximum sharpness. One stop is double the light, requiring half the ISO and noise for the same exposure, and you're hand-waving that? I own the EF 50mm f/1.8 and while it's a sharp lens, it's not some sort of magic low-light wand and its maximum sharpness is not at or near f/1.8. It's also an 80mm on APS-C which is a telephoto focal length and not practical for most casual shooting scenarios.

Would love to see you review the Fuji 16mm F1.4 and the 56mm F1.2. I got the chance to play with the 16mm at a trade fair yesterday, and man did it impress. Good lens no doubt from all the reviews I have seen. It was a little over priced for me when I was looking to buy one used so I picked up a 28-105mm USM and have been very happy with the picture quality. It’s not the sharpest lens but there’s nothing wrong with that. Some lenses have a character and the focal range is perfect for my shooting style. I own tge 10-18 EF-S and Sigma 18-35mm! I disagree with recommending the 55-250 though. I found it very soft, and returned it. Went with the 70-200 2.8 L 🤗
My APS-C travel kit is built around an EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, an EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM and an EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. The 1990 vintage EF 50 f/1.8 and a Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 fisheye are also usually in the corners of the old tamrac bag. Chris put Canon's EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM at the top of the fast standard zoom competition several years ago, though he did warn that some copies of that lens were reputed to suffer from excessive dust inhalation and/or early Image Stabilization system failure. Though Sigma's more recently introduced 18-35 f/1.8 lens seems to have a generally acknowledged advantage in lens speed and pure sharpness, that Sigma lacks image stabilization. As a slightly wobbly septuagenarian I still prefer the stabilized option, and I haven't noticed any dust or IS problems with my particular copy of the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.
This video has just become more relevant to me now that I picked up the R7 and do not like stacking my large RF glass on it. I'll have to check out the 55-250 ef's stm.
For my APS-C Canons, I mostly carry my own 'holy trinity': 10-18 IS USM, 18-55 IS USM and 55-250 IS USM. Full frame equivalent, gapless, range of 16-400mm without breaking the bank.
Hello. I've been watching you for years fondly from Turkey. I think you are the best channel in this field. I just wanted to say a little thank you. we look forward to your nice reviews 😌👌📸
I cant believe you mentioned the 60mm Tamron macro. It's one of my favorite lenses and no one talks about it. There are several times where I've thought about selling it but I just can't let it go for how good it is.
Love your channel as well! I‘m a fuji owner and would love to see more reviews about their lenses... I own the 16mm f1.4, the 56mm f1.2 and the 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens...I can just say from a realworld use point of view that I‘m having so much fun with those lenses! Very pleased indeed with the results!
Christopher, Any chance you might be able to get and test some of the Nikon APS-C lenses, in particular the 16-80 f2.8-f4 VR, so we could get a sense for how they compare with the other ones you've tested? I'm considering switching from Canon back to Nikon for its more impressive sensor performance and metering. But i struggle with what sort of lenses to pair up with any of those Nikon DX bodies. Thanks for all your tests, they are extremely helpful! Craig
Great review, as always, Christopher. Well done. (Slightly aggrieved not to find the one that I use didn't make it onto the list, of course - Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 Contemporary. Oh well.)
for aps-c.. i need a sharp telephoto lens for wildlife and birding.. need decent af speed... minimum 300mm on the long end and budget is 700$....what should i go for... from your videos i have slected tamron 18-400, sigma 100-400,tamron 100-400,canon 70-300 usm ii and tamron 70-300 di vc usd... did i miss any better lens... and what would be best...
YourTechGuide you can buy everyone - they are all sharp and good. Compared to canon or Nikon APSC Fujifilm feels like lenses made by alien with future technology.
Hi YTG, the Fujinon lens test charts on E-photozine will give you some idea of the relative merits of the Fujinon range, but because the range is still quite small and mostly very modern and all of very high build quality and performance you can be fairly sure that whichever lens you choose you will not be disappointed. I am currently the owner and user of at least ten fuji lenses and where there is a choice as between the 18-55 versus the 16-55 2,8 I now only ever use the later one because it is sharper, faster, better focusing, etc etc also twice the price!. One of my other favourites is the 10-24, just fabulous wide angle for landscapes, I just wish I could afford this new 8-16 F2.8!. In the end they are all brilliant but each of them has its special advantages, which ones you get depends on what you want to do, the more expensive lenses are certainly worth the extra money, if you can afford them. None of the reviews have really shown these lenses at their best, one of the reasons that the Fujifilm system is gaining such respect is that the cameras are capable of exceptional output, easily matching and in some cases surpassing Full Frame options, especially those with anti-aliasing filters and their cheaper lenses, the sort of resolution that really you cant see on a normal computer!. Cheers, Richard.
I am a regular viewer of your wonderful TH-cam channel. I recently bought Samyang 135mm f2 lens based on your glowing review. I will highly appreciate if you could do a comparison video for current 135mm lenses from Sigma Art, Zeiss APO Sonnar and Sony FE 135
Thanks for doing this, Christopher. Your videos have been so helpful for making decisions on which lenses to get. That Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is tempting me! Thanks for all the great content.
I bot 24mm f/2.8 stm a great ef-s canon lens for my aps-c. Is it 24mm on aps-c or 38.4mm, I am confused. Coz it is designed for aps-c so it should not get multiplied by 1.6x .
Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 are on my list for the next couple of years (no money currently). I don't like switching lenses often, so these two will be the daily drivers. The sharpness is INSANE. Yes, I will get the dock as well to calibrate them.
Hi Chris, if you had to choose between using the Canon EF-S 15-85 at 16mm or the Samyang 16mm prime, what would you choose?? Great reviews, looking forward to see what lens you review in 2019,
Christopher, I'd like to thank you for your amazing work reviewing lenses. You're hands down the best lens reviewer on TH-cam! Watching your videos helped me choose between the options I had and now I've got a handful of fastest and sharpest lenses on the market that turned my camera into a real beast.
I have an old Sony NEX-5R mirrorless camera with the kit 16-50mm lens. Picked up the Sony E50mm F1.8 OSS in the Black Friday sales last week and delighted to see it mentioned here in the Top 10. I'd like to add 1 more lens to my bag...so I have the 16-50, a brand new Prime 50mm and seeking 1 more recommendation...can anyone suggest anything?
Chris, i do video work for my daily research project. i have wide angle and potrait lenses. now im looking for standart prime/not-prime lens. Which one do you think i should take regarding image quality and low-light performance, they are : Sigma 35mm f1.4 art, Samyang 35mm t1.5, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or Sigma 30mm f1.4? i shoot with apsc sensor, that’s why i need 35mm as a standart lens. Sharpness in the widest open is important since i work often at night videography.
It depends what camera you're using. If it's a Canon digital SLR then the 35mm f/2 IS USM is the one you want. If it's a mirrorless camera then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is a good option
Not a single nikon lens. Interesting. I thought viltrox will make an entry here. I love sony & fuji lenses option. Also they offer IS & constant aperture for UWA zoom lenses & even some prime.
I have just bought the canon 17-55 for my canon M50 (will be using with canon adapter) and receiving in 2 days but now wondering if that is the best for videos? I mainly do videos (cooking). Any help would be much appreciated.
A really useful list thanks... It would be useful to get a sense of how EOS m lenses compare to the efs equivalents eg 11 to 22 vs 10 to 18, 55 to 250 vs 50 to 250
Now that I shoot on FF I miss few of the APS-C lenses I owned, like the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and the 24mm STM. I also was quite interested in the 18-35 and 50-100 and I had the chance to test them on a Nikon body, and boy oh boy they are impressive. I really wish Sigma develops something similar for the full frame telephoto environment, the 24-35 f/2 is impressive but not perfect, the range is quite limited and the lack of weather sealing makes me want to go towards the Tamron 24-70 G2
I loved this video dedicated for poor people like me with APSC bodies. Thank you so much. Please dedicate few videos for crop sensor as well in future.
I am interested in cannon 70-200 mm F/4.0 USM II for my APSC body (77D). Using it on APSC body will convert it into 112-320 mm F/6.4. Can you suggest any other lens apart from sigma 50-100mm F/1.8 that provides similar result. I intent to use mainly for photography. Thanks 😊
Would love to see you review the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 speedbooster, and you could do a great comparison between M-body and your 6D full frame with EF lenses. I have Canon M5 and always hankered after a full frame camera but EosR is just too expensive, so I got the EF-EOS M2 to try today, initial impressions are the fov is great - almost full frame equivalent, but not had much chance to test, it doesn't auto-retract focus when camera switched off which is annoying with nifty 50mm but my other EF lenses all have internal focus so not so much of an issue, people have complained of infinity focus issue and it apparently drains camera battery even when camera is off.
What about the Sigma 56mm F1.4? That lens is incredible! Would the new Sony 16-55mm F2.8 make the list but for its price? Thank you for the great reviews, Father Chris./Warren
Ya this lens should be on the list for sure. No question its the best I've tried.. You will see it on most of these kinds of lists.. Best bang for the buck, crazy sharp.
I've not ever had an issue. Hands down you will not be disappointed. Order from eglobalcentral.com. Asian version and no warrenty but comes fast and is very cheap (half price)...@@opfinger
Federico Opfinger speed is good but it is a little noisy, but you get a lot of a lens for 300$, i prefer it over the 50mm f1.8 Canon when it's stopped at f2.8.
Ryan Lawrence i know man! I thought it was going to be #1, I'm sure Christopher missed this one, because in his review it was all nothing but sharp sharp sharp from corner to corner.
I wonder what is going on with the EF-S 55-250mm STM lens. DXO mark didnt particularly think it was great with a score of 13, saying "No improvement over predecessor".
Hi Christopher, glad to hear you're reviewing more fuji lenses in the future, can I suggest you try my favourite fuji lens, the bokehlicious XF90 f2, it costs a little more than half of the xf80 2.8 OIS Macro and it may not beat the 80 Macro for sharpness, but it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the Samyang 85 1.8.
Fuji lenses are all fantastic, but the one that really stands head and shoulders above the rest is the 56mm 1.2. It's the sharpest lens I've ever used, hands down. And I've used a lot of lenses across many camera systems! Please check it out when you get the chance, Christopher!
That's weird acefibble, I find this lens to be sharper than my 23 f2 and the 16-50 2.8. What body did you use it on? Great to hear Christopher, I will be watching out for them!
In my personal experience. The sigma art 18-35 and the sigma art 50-100 are great lenses. I do have the Canon 10-18mm that I used to shoot on my M50 and my 80d crop sensor cameras. I've always got good results with the first 2 lenses but the Canon 10-2-18 mm I got a lot and I mean a lot of chromatic aberration. I even use that lens on my Canon EOS R and still have the same issues
I really want the sharpest lens I can find for a cheap-ish budget for canon EOS rebel T1i 500D! Any recommendations for cheap-ish razor sharp lens with minimal other abberations? or am i screwed?
Hi Christopher, do you think you could make a review for the canon ef-m 32mm f1.4? ps: I think the canon ef-m 22mm f2.0 should be included in your list for the aps-c lenses :-) Thanks for your great reviews! I enjoy them a lot!
What about the canon Ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM? I’ve also been trying to find a comparison to to the sigma 18-35 DC Or another sigma that is the closest comparison to it. Of sigma had a 17-55 f/2.0 even I would buy in a heart beat I think.
@@christopherfrost so i guess its safe to assume you would choose the sigma 18-35 over the canon 17-33 f/2.8? but what about the extra 20 degrees to get the nice compression. :( any suggestions in bigger zoom range with wider aperture?
Christopher Frost Photography :( that’s discouraging. But like you said it’s the price to pay. Last question. And thank you so much for keeping up with this. Thoughts on the sigma 17-55 f/2.8. As compared to the canon and sigma 18-35. ?
@@Malukevin407 You mean the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS HSM? I've done a special comparison video about that called 'Fast standard zoom lens comparison test' or something like that - check it out on my TH-cam channel :-)
@@christopherfrost well, I'm looking for a 2.8 mainly for night shots of milky way or landscape under star light to avoid going high in ISO. By the way my camera is a canon 80d. I saw many reviews of the canon 10-18 and many of them are complaining of it because the build quality is not great and get broken down often. The tokina on the other side "as per reviews" is a better quality built and sharper than canon. That's why I'm asking you if you have used already both and have a clearer opinion of it.
How about what is the best apsc BODY ... ? I'm still on a 550D simply because I can find no improved quality in the images made with more recent body models .. particularly low light "high" iso. Sure full frame would step me up quite a bit but if I want to stay in the apsc price range, what are suggested options ?
I'm looking at 80D, but quite expensive for my budget. 70D m2 could be an option, tho I think that money vs quality, the 80D is a much bigger step up than the 70D m2, no ?
@@Chapter3Fan I recently bought a second hand 100d (after being pleased by my 450d for some years) and I'm really happy. Prints of 30 x 50 cm are almost perfect if I work carefully while shooting. But I must confess that I rarely shoot at ISO-settings higher than 800.
@@exurban5207 exactly ... thing is ... I sometimes have to shoot some indoor events from work and then I use my 550D along with the 5Dm3 from the office .. and in low light it's quite obvious how much difference there is. Sure the 5Dm3 is a LOT more expensive and is FF and is also more recent so it's to be expected that there is a step up, but if I look at online image quality (low light) performance amongst canons crops, there isn't nearly a step up in the same or similar way.
Another great video and review - I was disappointed not to see any 18-50 or 18-55 "walkaround" lenses in the list such as the very capable Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for example.
What about high performer APS-C lense from Tokina: 14-20mm f2.0? I would appreciate a review of it from you! That would be a nice Christmas present! Also wondering, why Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM is not listed?
Never tried the Tokina lens I'm afraid, and the Canon lens is still nice but a bit long-in-the tooth now - the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is considerably sharper
Great review, just what i'm looking for... just curious, do you think Samyang 85mm outperform Samyang 135mm in term of sharpness and color fringing? thanks...

For my APS-C Canons, I mostly carry my own 'holy trinity': 10-18 IS USM, 18-55 IS USM and 55-250 IS USM. Full frame equivalent, gapless, range of 16-400mm without breaking the bank.
Wow, those are my next purchases.
What about the 18-135mm is stm lens?

Hello. I've been watching you for years fondly from Turkey. I think you are the best channel in this field. I just wanted to say a little thank you. we look forward to your nice reviews 😌👌📸
Still rocking my Canon 50D. works like a champ. this video is much appreceated
What a great job you do. Thank you so much for your hard work. Merry Christmas.
I like most people started out on a crop sensor. I only shoot full-frame now the majority of the time. But, it's good to see crop sensor getting love.
I cant believe you mentioned the 60mm Tamron macro. It's one of my favorite lenses and no one talks about it. There are several times where I've thought about selling it but I just can't let it go for how good it is.
It's very nice, but not quite as sharp as these
Love your channel as well!
Craig
I am tempted, but unfortunately I just don't have the free time :-(
own canon 55-250 and it is fantastic. however for apsc cameras the 55mm is too narrow for me TAT
I have tamron 70 - 300. Good lense and quite cheap
*we need some fuji lenses to be tested so I know which one to buy.*
YourTechGuide you can buy everyone - they are all sharp and good. Compared to canon or Nikon APSC Fujifilm feels like lenses made by alien with future technology.
16mm F1.4 is amazing. 56mm F1.2 is also pretty great.
Yes true all these lenses listed in this video are far behind fujinon lenses
@@kevindiaz3459 *fuji sharpest lens is the 90mm f2. I already own the 16mm*
Hi, what about the canon 17-55 f2.8
I bot 24mm f/2.8 stm a great ef-s canon lens for my aps-c. Is it 24mm on aps-c or 38.4mm, I am confused. Coz it is designed for aps-c so it should not get multiplied by 1.6x .
If you own a Canon APS-C camera then you always, always, always, always multiply by 1.6x, no matter what lens it is, always. So, yes, it is 38.4mm
@@christopherfrost Thanks. You are great
Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 are on my list for the next couple of years (no money currently).
Great reviews, looking forward to see what lens you review in 2019,
The Samyang would blow it away, but that's what you'd expect, as the Canon is a zoom lens
I was surprised the Canon 17-55 f2.8 didn't make the list or even the honorable mention.
The Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is considerably sharper
thanks for that, My two favorite lenses are the 55-250 canon stm and the sigma 17-50. In my opinion both are as sharp as much more expensive lenses.
I just found the 55-250 STM in a pawnshop for $50! I will use it with a Fotodox adapter on my Canon m50, cant wait to put it to use!
fingers crossed for not a cropped video this time!
In a year's time people are going to be mystified by that comment (thankfully) ;-)
@@christopherfrost no, the Internet never forgets!

Here I am, over a year later, puzzled by that comment.
Thanks for recommending the Samyang 85 1.8!! It’s become my favorite lens
I have just bought the canon 17-55 for my canon M50 (will be using with canon adapter) and receiving in 2 days but now wondering if that is the best for videos? I mainly do videos (cooking). Any help would be much appreciated.
A really useful list thanks... It would be useful to get a sense of how EOS m lenses compare to the efs equivalents eg 11 to 22 vs 10 to 18, 55 to 250 vs 50 to 250
Thanks for the videos! Have a great Christmas to you too and God bless!
I would add the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8.
Yet another amazing video, loving this :P
Now that I shoot on FF I miss few of the APS-C lenses I owned, like the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and the 24mm STM.
I also was quite interested in the 18-35 and 50-100 and I had the chance to test them on a Nikon body, and boy oh boy they are impressive. I really wish Sigma develops something similar for the full frame telephoto environment, the 24-35 f/2 is impressive but not perfect, the range is quite limited and the lack of weather sealing makes me want to go towards the Tamron 24-70 G2
Are that means my Maro 80mm Fuji lens is out. Expensive but fantastic.
I loved this video dedicated for poor people like me with APSC bodies. Thank you so much. Please dedicate few videos for crop sensor as well in future.
I’m poor too with the eos m 😂
Can you suggest me 4 lenses that would fit perfectly for me ?
Hi Chris... great list and very concise review as usual. Hipe next year you can review the MITAKON 85mm 1.2
Thanks 😊
the 22mm ef-m, instead of the 11-22mm, great list! merry christmas!
I have the EF-M 11-22 IS STM and I agree it's a good one, and probably the one I use the most on my M3 and M6 bodies.
Hello great video. Do you min d share the microphone name that you use? Thannks

@@christopherfrost Thanks It makes an extremely great sound for me. I bet you are using some preamplifier to go along.
22mm f2 ef-m?
Kindly suggest a reasonably wide angle lens with night photoshoot and astrophotography within this range of price 600 USD for D5600 Nikon
What about the Sigma 56mm F1.4? That lens is incredible! Would the new Sony 16-55mm F2.8 make the list but for its price? Thank you for the great reviews, Father Chris./Warren
So, the Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 ois didn't make the cut, damn, i have that one and the 55-250 Canon stm.
Ya this lens should be on the list for sure. No question its the best I've tried.. You will see it on most of these kinds of lists.. Best bang for the buck, crazy sharp.
how good is the af speed of the 17-50?
What abt tokina 11-16 f2.8??
I wonder what is going on with the EF-S 55-250mm STM lens. DXO mark didnt particularly think it was great with a score of 13, saying "No improvement over predecessor".
Hello, I have heard that the Canon camera has a problem of the focal focus of Sigma-18-35 f/1.8 Art and calibrate it too??
I have just bought a new Fuji camera, so reviews will be coming in the new year :-)
That's weird acefibble, I find this lens to be sharper than my 23 f2 and the 16-50 2.8.
I've been looking forward to this.
Hi Chris, Could you please suggest some sharp lenses for Canon 700D.
Since the 700D is an APS-C camera....I'm pretty sure he just did mention some in this video.
Hi Christopher, do you think you could make a review for the canon ef-m 32mm f1.4? ps: I think the canon ef-m 22mm f2.0 should be included in your list for the aps-c lenses :-) Thanks for your great reviews! I enjoy them a lot!
It would be interesting to compare the Samyang 85mm f 1.8 with the Fuji 90mm f2.
Do they make the Samyang lens with Auto Focus?
What about the canon Ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM? I’ve also been trying to find a comparison to to the sigma 18-35 DC
Or another sigma that is the closest comparison to it. Of sigma had a 17-55 f/2.0 even I would buy in a heart beat I think.
Nowadays the Canon 17-55 is not all that sharp - it's fine but a long way from *these* lenses
@@christopherfrost so i guess its safe to assume you would choose the sigma 18-35 over the canon 17-33 f/2.8? but what about the extra 20 degrees to get the nice compression. :( any suggestions in bigger zoom range with wider aperture?
@@Malukevin407 That's the price you have to pay I'm afraid! Realistically your only other option is something like the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC

HI Christopher....love your reviews... please, review the sony 10-18 for aps-c!!! Cheers!
I actually tried to but the copy of the lens I borrowed was terribly de-centered, so I had to send it back. One day I will review it
@Christopher Frost Photography
what would be your choice between a canon 10-18, tokina 11-16 and tokina 11-20?
sharpness and quality wise.
thank you
Personally I'd go for the Canon lens unless you really need an f/2.8 aperture
@@christopherfrost well, I'm looking for a 2.8 mainly for night shots of milky way or landscape under star light to avoid going high in ISO. By the way my camera is a canon 80d.
I saw many reviews of the canon 10-18 and many of them are complaining of it because the build quality is not great and get broken down often.
The tokina on the other side "as per reviews" is a better quality built and sharper than canon. That's why I'm asking you if you have used already both and have a clearer opinion of it.
@@oulebsirislem3991 All the information I can give you is found in my reviews. Watch my review of the 10-18 and you'll see what I think :-)
Chris, we'll love to see Nikon lenses please. Your quality reviews really helped me when I was Canon user.
Hey what was the reason for your switch?
Fujinon XF 23mm F2 R WR Would be nice start since i see a lot of return videos of it but many like it so I don’t know where to put it.
yey another great video ^_^ yehey for APS-C's!
They'er just not as sharp as these particular lenses, TBH.
Few of my lenses made it to the list and m really glad I own them. 😊
Are you going to do a 10 sharpest APS-C for 2024? Or a best lenses for the R7?
I am missing the ef-m 32mmf1,4 - which is awesome and the Samyang 12mmf2....
Great review, just what i'm looking for...
just curious, do you think Samyang 85mm outperform Samyang 135mm in term of sharpness and color fringing?
