My favorite’s have got to be The Piratelike captain, the pigtailed eyepatch captain, and the potential Shihoin ancestor( he looks like Ryo Himuro for all my Kengan fans out there). Those were the ones who immediately caught my eye.
Im a bit surprised to see no member of the 0 division in there. But I would go with Unohana, I just love her design. Okay but of the new ones I love the one in the front left and the one with the hat. I mean I like all of them, especially with what we got for the 0 division in mind
They all look like Kenpachi’s extended family, no wonder everyone feared them. Also Kubo continues to give us more lore, this really is the year for Bleach

We have since gotten the names of the original Gotei 13 1.Yamamoto Genryusai (our bearded guy) 2.Shihouin Chika (dark skinned man with white hair, yup yoruichis gramps) 3. izuhara Kinroku ("buisnessman") 4.Shijima Chihiri ( pale monochrome guy?) 5.Obana Danjiro ( hidden face behind arm man , possible Shiba ancestor?) 6.Saito Furofushi ( eyepatch purple twintail) 7.Shingyou no Busuna (beastly pirate , possibly Komamuras Grampa) 8.Katori Batsunsai ( stacked glasses girl, with the naginata) 9.Kumoi Entetsu ( tooth/tattoo/liples mouth bald man with round glasses) 10. Otogawa Furuoki ( hatwearing long haired fellow) 11..Unohana Yachiru (our Caring healer/ bloodlusty first kenpachi) 12. Zenjou Jiuhin ( facepaint huge guy) 13. Sakahone Saizou ( old hunchback) Also the prevelence of purple in their designs is probably due to japans association of purple with evil & death

Kubo never misses when drawing groups of authority, from the people who run the show, to future antagonists. The Gotei 13, the Espada, the Stern Ritters and the Western Soul Society captains, he makes everyone look unique but they all still fit together.
yeah, he is the king in that matter, but its also one of my fav. things in (shounen). a group of villians sitting or having their poses, be it in hxh, naruto etc. its the fcking best. the og gotei look marvelous. anyway, western soul soc.?
I pray they dive into the brutality unohana embodied as kenpachi. We’re owed far more context on her becoming the first kenpachi and how she managed the title when she had it. Her passive kindness left so much to the imagination and so much to be desired.
@@Exel3nce yes, it’s the title for the strongest swordsman in the gotei 13. There can only be one at a time and it’s passed off by killing the current kenpachi. Unohana was never defeated tho, she simply passed the role off.

As talented as all those mangaka are, Kubo has got to be my most favorite, he has such a talent for group pictures, and his character design is so pleasing to the eye, it's such an honor and experience to see him develop and refine his style from how jagged an sharp it use to be. couldnt have said it better. yes, with the big numbers the groups have, its quite hard to make them all look fantastic (like the fat ones or plain ones), but he still does a good job. the "main characters" of such pictures tho, they always have this fantastic look to them. be it their base design, their clothing, poses....they all lay out their personality. and if he does his casual outfit pictures - well, you cant get better than that ps. the only one i really dont like is the pink haired girl cause she looks like a copy of the hollow girl thats missing an eye
This is the group of killers Yhwach wanted to confront, how wished Soul Society was. Either way this is quite a reveal, the potential is strong and if the series continues with the hell arc, Karakura and other places will be in deep trouble and more so since they were already ruthless killers, imagine their hell forms......

It is possible that Tenjirou was in the Kido Corps or a similar unit that existed during the era. He said that he taught Unohana healing techniques and his demeanor with her suggest that he is definitely one of her seniors or at the very least parallel in class. Since Healing is Kido based, I think it's a very plausible theory.
Character designing is true art and Kubo has mastered it. Posture, clothing, colors, physique, facial expressions. A still image of someone can explain their entire character and arc. Kubo excels at it.
If they make this a one-shot and then gets adapted into a 3 hour film, I’d be super excited. Can’t wait for Kubo’s development on the originak Gotei 13🔥
It's like that meme of "which of this are you, tag your friends" and they are all the psychopath. And even a 1000 years later the last 2 remaining members chilled the f out and became granpappy war vet and nice nurse lady coming from arsonist and concivted killer
The og gotei 13 the strongest version it has ever been and for good reasons too these guys looks menacing and merciless as hell and for yamamoto to have the strength and charisma to band all these ruthless criminals together really tells a lot about his character when he was in his prime.
They all look so cool. I really hope the Hell Arc ends up becoming a full arc and that we get to see the original gotei, all the previous kenpatchi, and other characters we’ve loved and lost. It’d be so awesome.
Perhaps the 0 squad was established at the same time as the gotei 13, with at least ichibe and the inventors of the key tools (zanpakto and the uniforms, both of which they clearly already have) being recognized for their contributions and elevated without going through the captaincy at all. As for the established relationship to current characters, perhaps in the past they were more closely related to the gotei, spending time amongst them, and the seeming total isolation in the royal realm is a comparatively recent occurrence

0 squad was made up of former captain of course those captains would later die and be replaced by other captains in the 0 squad which is why they suck so much now the current 0 squad not really based on strong fighters but rather achievements in making stuff.

You have character that literally created a blue print for soul reapers up there. As well as soon who taught at the time our strongest healer Unohana. 0 Squad as raw talented and gifted soul reapers. Soul King wasn’t looking for how many bodies you can pile up . But how you can grow soul society. Cause if that’s the case clearly Unohana would have been up there instead.
The guy in the bottom left looks SO GREAT. I love his design, very unique and very threatening and brutal. I think this group might include all 5 noble families. Shihoin, Kuchiki and Shiba seem obvious. I think the very top right or the bottom left might be Tsunuyashiro
I have a feeling Senjumaru probably would have had an affiliate status with the Gotei 13, not being a proper member but being affiliated with them. Maybe after the death of one of the 12th Division captains, they thought of her as a suitable replacement and she accepted the position.
Kubo does always have an antagonist group for each arc. Gotei 13, Espada, Xcution and the Sternritter so maybe this will be the antagonist group for the Hell arc. Too many good and well thought out designs just to be used for one episode

There is A LOT of personality in this one image alone. From the appearance, to how they hold their sword, and even where they're positioned in the layout tells a story about each character.
This photo has brought so many more questions to mind😭 I can't wait to see the next episode and I sincerely hope that Kubo actually expands on this original Gotei 13. I hope he sees how curious the fans are about them and decides to give us the backstory. Also at this point, we know that Nimaiya and Senjumaru were alive at least because they're carrying zanpakutos, plus Nimaiya was around since Yama faced Ikimikidomoe and they're wearing the clothes Senjumaru created so 3 out of the 5 Guards are accounted for. Tenjiro is the wild card.
My favorite of these captains from design alone is the unassuming lady with the pole arm. I love how much her aloof expression clashes with these other morose/psychotic killers. Her weapon is also pretty unique, as we don't see to many spear users in Bleach, and those that exist don't get the best showing.
My favorite designs are the girl with glasses who looks really innocent but as you said is probably the craziest, the girl with the eyepatch, and the one that's facing left towards the right hand side of the image. These designs are so good.

@@animanco6833 They would not be reincarnated due to what we know of the Hell Arc. Likely some of them were killed during the war with the Quincy and the others just killed over time. Soul Society was a lot rougher and life expectancy would be a lot shorter. Any of those whom died are now stuck in Hell.
I have a theory that Senjimaru is most likely the young woman in glasses that you theorized was the most terrifying of them all. She’s got the most similar appearance and I could see that as a young wide eyed and excited version of her.

The Gotei 13 was created by Yamamoto. The Zero Division by Ichibe. They were founded at relatively the same time. The Zero division members were alive at the same time as these original 13 Captains but fulfilled separate roles. Being fewer in number, the Zero Division is not as divided up into categories as the gotei 13. You have one member who makes the weapons, another who names them, one who makes the clothes, another who provides food and restores Spiritual Pressure, and another who heals. The Zero Division is designed to work separate from the Gotei 13 but supplement them only to the extent in which the Gotei 13 prevents issues from getting to Zero Division. It isn't strange that Shutara has access to the 12th Division not because she must have been in charge of it at some point, but because the nature of her position in the Zero Division (A seamstress of sorts) is that she understands and works with the fundamentals of things in the Sereitei. As if the all the Soul Society is a fabric to cut and shaped as her hands deem fit, but also as if the Soul Society itself (the fabric) had sentience and will enough to greet her and meet her half way "the doors merely opened for me". As if every material the Seemstress would use wanted to be used by her. In short I don't feel the Zero Division was ever part of the Gotei 13. I think it was more like: "HEY Yama, you're strong but we got a different job for you. Start the Gotei 13 and protect the Soul Society and we'll keep the Soul King cared for and we'll go about our separate functions. Oetsu will supply you guys with weapons, I Ichibe will name them and give them their abilities, Shutara will make the clothes and uniforms so we're not looking like the thugs we know we all are. I'm calling the shots up here so we know why I'm staying, and as for Tenjiro and Kirio. Well we're keeping the greatest healer because if ya'll get fucked up we got make sure we still continue to exist, and a guy's gotta eat so you know why Kirio is sticking around. Got it? Good. Let's get to it thugs. I mean captains." And so it goes. This corrects any concerns about Shutara's position and Tenjiro could have still have taught Unahana without ever being 4th Division leader. He could have came to The Soul Society to teach her when she made the transition from Kenpachi. Or she could have gone to the Soul Palace to learn. I don't think Ichigo, Byakua, Renji. Rukya, etc were the first Soul Reapers to go there outside the Zero Division (if you can consider them Soul Reapers).
Kubo as always creating some fantastic designs. The Pelt-wearing guy is my favorite, he really looks like the kind of brutal criminal we heard the original Captains were. Also, if all five of the Noble clans were involved with the first set of Captains, I think it means that we will learn who the final family is. Which is fitting, since we know they were concerned about the threat Hell could pose. And then, they themselves might end up being that threat. Which is some fitting irony considering what they did to the Soul King.
Bleach has been my favorite anime my entire life and the fact that bleach is back to being relevant makes me feel so good. Now I’m just waiting for a bleach game 2023 so I can feel complete in life.
I feel the sinister man in the bottom left has a poison power explaining the clouds and the fact his hands that would grip the sword look so weird like the sword is poisoning him
I was thinking Ice type. Almost looks like he should have a Russian accent. Plus the fur and pale complexion. Black near his hands could be frostbite and the clouds cold air.

I think the 0 division isn’t in the picture because they were already KNOWN as the 0 division. In order for the G13 to have uniforms they would’ve already been created which means the 0 division is made out of the people who made the materials possible for the G13 to even EXIST.
I think that this could mean both things that you said. Next episode will tell, but if he's finalized these designs, then I'd assume that means they'll be making more than one appearance
The evil-looking one reminds me of the usual depictions of Ivan the Terrible, or how mythological villains are often depicted in Slavic stories and media-like cartoons. He might be based on the legend of Koschei the Deathless, an immortal sorcerer who hid his heart in a needle, thus gaining immortality (think ancient Lich). His design with the fur coat, beard, exaggerated pale skin, and thin build screams Russian or at least Slavic inspiration here.
My favorite detail is Unohana towering above everyone in the image, potentially implying that she stands above all of them (except Yamamoto) when it comes to her skill as a warrior. No matter what awesome powers all these old captains had, Unohana was likely still the strongest with nothing but her sword and skills.
It will make a lot of sense if this was made as a tease for the new Hell Arc. After Unohana and Captain Commander have died I would believe the full original gotei 13 have gone to hell. Could we be blessed with a battle between the new Gotei 13 vs the very first in some fashion? I am quite hopeful
Hopefully in the end when the original gotei 13 are defeated their souls get released from hell somehow. Otherwise the new Gotei 13 will end up in hell themselves possibly once they die. Shoot imagining Ichigo being in hell once he's dead would suck.
Oh that hit me. When you said unohana and old yama died. They're the only original gotei 13 captain alive so it'll probably happen in hell arc. Let's just hope that kubo is revealing some hints for us.
@@YoJoRockThaBeat I would like that, cause that ritual might have been the ONLY way/solution that they could have kept some sort of balance between realms at the time, and hopefully they end up finding another solution to bring all of their souls peace in the present day. Maybe Kisuke and Mayuri together might be able to figure something out.
I've been told in other sources that purple is used a lot in Japanese character design to indicate people who are villainous or sinister. Alternatively, it can also mean nobility. Both of which would be good reasons for purple to be a theme across the original Gotei 13

I have a feeling that we ARE seeing Senjumaru in the original Gotei 13 Captain spread. I think its either the quiet, nerdy looking lady or the pink haired lady with the eye patch. I can see her appearance changing a lot, and asking Oetsu to reshape her zanpakuto for her.
Since we know these guys are all ruthless killers I wonder if Kubo will do some fun expectation subversion with their designs. For example, we know Unohana was regarded as the worst criminal of them all, yet her design is one of the more unassuming & vicious looking of the ones here. So maybe it'd be a cool thing if the really sinister guy in the front left was actually the first captain of Squad 4 and the healer of the group? Or if the orange haired man w two swords who looks somewhat heroic is actually the guy who's the next most brutal to Unohana.
I believe that Tenjiro Kirinji is still the healer of this time and that the healers in general were not directly part of the Goteii 13. I see it as these 13 being the lead soldiers, whereas any superfluous groups (healers, researchers, etc...) would all be separate divisions to focus on their specialties rather than being soldiers. The main Goteii 13 were recruited as killers after all, I doubt they'd recruit healers to part of that group.
@@lo4tr Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Healing techniques use a combination of Kido techniques. So couldn't there be a possibility that Kirinji might have been the part of the Kido Corps, maybe even be the Commander of the Kido Corps. We all know that there is a separate specilised squad for the kido corps. Couldn't that be a possibility?
That may be a possible inspiration. Another possibility would be the japanese cultural meaning of purple, that being of death ,venom & evil. This association of purple with badguys is pretty strong even today, to the point that when media is localized for japan , good characters who have purple in their designs are recolored( jp version of Rayman comes to mind)
I’m pretty convinced that Unohana likely believed the same ideology Kenpachi did, that being she didn’t need to commune with her sword for strength. I wonder if she learned her Shikai after training intone healing arts, hence why Minazuki in shikai is able to heal. PLEASE I hope we can get a hell arc
I agreeee , it could very well be difficult for unohana to unlock her zanpaktou and then when she did , she literally played with opponents for the fun of fighting
I always thought about it in a different kind. I think Unahana only cared for the maximum amount of power, that's why she never really bothered to learn anything about shikai and destroyed everything with her insanely powerful bankai. I'm dying to see more of Unahana, just love her.
I reckon the glasses girl is actually an ancestor of Nanao, Kyouraku's lieutenant. The glasses, black hair and the fact that she wields a weapon similar to Nanao's family weapon seem to add up, plus Nanao is known to be absolutely terrifying when she wants to be, so could be a lesser form of whatever that women did to be known as a blood thirsty killer. That or Lisa, his previous lieutenant, for much the same reason. I also personally think the guy you think is a beast clan member is potentially Kyoraku's ancestor, just due to relatively similar looks, and though it might be a stretch, his proximity to the woman I mentioned above. Just a thought.
Your take on supposed founder of the 7-th division is actually the most interesting I've seen for today. It could be a good possible way to tie Beast realm to the plot in Hell arc. Or maybe even organising Komamura's return as an active character in the plot.
They all look SICK, Kubo yet again making dope as hell looking characters. Hopefully we get to see them in action during the Hell Arc if we ever do get to see it continued.
Is it weird that I wasn’t expecting to see any of the zero division members in the original captains group? I thought the zero division members were selected because they were smart and created something that became super important to Soul Society and the soul reapers. So the uniforms, the food, the healing, and the asauchi. It wasn’t until they got to the Soul Place that they became super strong, by training or by having their bones turned into the oken.
if you think about it, only Senjumaru could make an appearance, but not necessarily. Hyousube was already a different thing/level, a creator of asauchi and a creator of healing techniques can be important people and have power without being one of the captains of Gotei
@@gammafrost Zanpakuto were created before the gotei 13 was a thing, so he didn't need to part of it. The only other person I can see being a part of the gotei 13 other than Hikifune would be maybe Tenjirō.

This is the Gotei 13 of Killers they mentioned and I've got to hand it to Tite Kubo because they do look like a bunch of Conquerors and Thugs 😆 very intimidating bunch. I would love a prequel of them during their prime and hay day before they got disbanded and killed off
The creepiest thing is how eye patches are used to restrict full power. I can’t imagine how powerful that girl in pink/purple hair is when there is already a kenpachi in the group
Maybe she just leaks tonnes of reiatsu and is unable to control the flow unlike the others, so maybe she is the hand grenade of the group, you throw her at the issue until the issue is no more. She could either be one of the weaker members or the third strongest, with yama at the top and unohana beating her because our eyepatch capatian might not actually know proper sword techniques and just relies exclusively in brute force and single minded determination, while unohana as the kempachi would know proper sword fighting and would beat her
My assumption regarding the Zero Squad is that they were formed a bit later. The people who were responsible for guarding the Soul King during the earlier time were selected members of the Royal Family. At this time, the Zero Division members, while they were not captains they could probably some of the more important individuals in the Gotei due to their innovations and stuff.
Something that I think really good stories do is having even more story to tell from many years before the current time. And I think Bleach is one of the best series at doing this. There is treasure trove of stories to tell with the early days of the Gotei 13.
Senjumaru could potentially be the woman with black hair and glasses in the upper-left corner. She’s in shikai (or has a unique sealed form), and the majority of what we see of her zanpakuto is gold. It’s kind of a stretch, but I could see it.
Really amazing surprise, some of them seem to be ancestors of current characters and possibly with similar abilities, if the hell arc happens it would be very interesting to show this old group, Kubo has a lot to show yet, I hope he is inspired to show all of this soon.
I appreciate Kubo's talent for character design so much. I feel the same about Oda. It's really easy to have characters who look the same especially when there are so many. But Kubo's style is so unique. These days, it seems that anime and manga characters all have the same generic face shape, eyes, lips etc. But both Kubo and Oda give us character who all are distinguishable from eachother even when they do look similar. Like Askin and Aizen. They look similar, but different enough that you could never mistake them for eachother.
I don't think Oda fits into this example because he makes characters with very different anatomies and sizes. Looking at similar base designs, I think Kishimoto stands out the most.
I’ve always admired how the need for awesome character design when they all have the same uniform is a necessity but Kuno exceeds that challenge. It’s subtle things he does but I often hardly notice they are all wearing the same thing because their designs are that good
I hope Kubo does another 1 shot at least giving us a bit of info on the original captains. I feel that the zero division was already made by this time because from I remember everyone that who is apart of it has contributed to the soul society in a major way.

Concerning Oetsu, in addition to the light novels there's a line in the manga that suggests he's been around since the beginning of SS which would put him almost as old as Ichibe - maybe another Plus originally born in the primordial world.
I am pretty confident about 7/13 squad numbers. 1. The Shiba looking guy 10. 2. Yama 1. 3. Unohana 11. 4. The Shihoin Guy 2. 5. The hat guy is probably a Kuchiki so 6. 6. I had the same theory about the fur guy because if the smoke that looks like transformation smoke, 7. 7. The girl that I have suspicions she is an Ise 4. 8. the Aizen looking guy 5. 9. the granpa 13. 10. The pinked hair girl might be the reason Katen looks like that we had the same situation only 3 more times in the story (Azashiro, Kisuke, Kenny) 8. 11. the tall person on top right 3 because they are a bit creepy. 12. the other glasses guy behind yama might be 12 but the last guy looks a bit crazy as well 13. and 9 is left for the huge guy with the red tattoo. Everyone make predictions to see if we are right in the end.
Pretty much my list of the captains goes as follows 1) Young Yama 2) Dark skinned person (possible ancestor of Shihoin clan) 3) Top right guy that looks like Rose with Kira's emo hair 4) slick back hair (may be a younger Kirinji, same hairline and similar facial fetures) 5) Bald guy (mostly process of elimination) 6) Right of Unohana (possibly a younger version of Byakuya's grandfather or his grand-father?) 7) fur coat (Looks like the most vicious besides Unohana. Could probably have started the 7th vs 11th division rivalry that sometimes went on. Also has kinda Iba like facial hair and the fur looks similar to Komomura) 8) Eye patch girl (Clear similarity to Shunsui and Katen) 9) Tattoo face (tattoos are a pretty common trope in squad 9 like Kensei and Shuhei's 69) 10) Wrist guards (possible ancestor of Shiba clan) 11) Unohana 12) Glasses girl (I think she kinda looks like she could possibly be a younger Senjumaru) 13) Old guy (Looks pretty sickly and wise which is kinda similar to how Ukitake is portrayed for most of Bleach. Also we know him and Shunsui are some of the first from Yama's school to be promoted to Captains, and this guy looks like he is very close to croaking any second)
I really believe that they are all cold blooded killers. All of them, not just the ones that come first to mind. This would of course give them the perfect position to be the antagonists of the hell arc (including Unohana and Yamamoto with some weird explanation). I also think that the numbers of the divisions was created by the order in which these captains joined Yamamoto Im really exited right now

Luckily the Soul society has 13 Captains with bankai aswell as the 0 division, some Vize Captains with bankai or Close to bankai, the vizard that became no part of the gotei again, the Team around Shop uraharra and some Other alies like the fullbringers or the remainig espada (maybe quincie?) aswell as Team ichigo of course (and aizen? I guess). The Numbers are there. But who knows what else might be lurking in the shadows of hell. Do we find some alies or even more enemies in the hellfire?
I like your theory on creepy pirate guy but i'd like to propose my own theory theory that he's got an ice themed Zanpakto. Giving me real Siberian hardass vibes. The mist around him makes him look like he radiates cold like Yamamoto's bankai radiates heat, and I think his discoloration (especially around the hands) hints to something like frostbite. He could still be a beast man, and I think it would be fitting if he turned into a Russian Bear
You know, there were a lot of talk about how the current gotei are the weakest version we've seen. Even though, I agree that the first gotei are undoubtedly THE strongest out of all (which are looking really awesome in this art, btw). There's one thing the first gotei didn't have that the current do. The current gotei are friends with Ichigo, the fact that I would always took into consideration.
The most exciting part is that Kubo could have had these ideas stewing for a decade ever since he drew the original silhouettes. These characters just look fantastic, like I would love to read an entire volume just about these characters alone even if they are only loosely related to the Bleach lore as we know it.
19:03.....it's entirely possible Senjumaru Shutara is the girl all the way to the left, considering her hair and eye color matches, and she looks like Kuna(who is modified/created by Mayuri), also the twintail girl on the right might be Kirio Hikifune considering same hair and eye color, and considering Hiyori's hairstyle.
@@holeeshi9959 From what I recall, Kirio doesn't come around until much later. And, I think that Senjumaru is relegated to being more of a seamstress than a soldier at this point and likely not recruited to the main fighting forces of the Goteii 13. Same with Kirinji being a healer.
Senjumaru was recruited in the royal guard for inventing the shihakushos, and from Yamamoto's flashback we can see shinigamis' already wore them before the Gotei so she probably was already part of Division 0. Meanwhile we know Hikifune became part of it just a hundred years ago, and they actually look nothing alike
The first Captains of the Gotei were the bloodthirsty defenders. There was no need for some of the Zero Division to be with them. They were probably supporting from behind - The Blacksmith, Seamstress, and Healer. Later on when the Wars declined maybe they made the duties of each squad more niche and got specialized Captains.
Looks like the ending of this week's episode tells use which division each is a captain of. Very interesting that it wasn't as we thoigh for most of them. But it was still very good.
I was pretty stoked about this reveal too but quickly became bummed when it didn't grab the cameo/backstory opportunity for any of the Royal Guard members, especially with Oetsu since we see them all holding their zanpakutos here or Senjumaru because of their garbs (I do like your theory that she's a junior at this point and got promoted a little later). Is it possible that Oetsu predates the Gotei 13 back when they weren't formed yet and he was just an eccentric blacksmith somewhere in Rukongai who caught the attention of the Soul King? You can't possibly get in the Gotei 13 without a zanpakuto (can you?) so it must have been invented way before. Ichibei is definitely older (the oldest?) since he named everything in Seireitei. As for Kirinji, there definitely would've been some forms of medicine/healing before him and his hot spring water treatment was a novel idea that got him that promotion.

Kubo never misses when drawing groups of authority, from the people who run the show, to future antagonists. The Gotei 13, the Espada, the Stern Ritters and the Western Soul Society captains, he makes everyone look unique but they all still fit together.

couldnt have said it better. yes, with the big numbers the groups have, its quite hard to make them all look fantastic (like the fat ones or plain ones), but he still does a good job. the "main characters" of such pictures tho, they always have this fantastic look to them. be it their base design, their clothing, poses....they all lay out their personality.

Either way this is quite a reveal, the potential is strong and if the series continues with the hell arc, Karakura and other places will be in deep trouble and more so since they were already ruthless killers, imagine their hell forms......

It is possible that Tenjirou was in the Kido Corps or a similar unit that existed during the era. He said that he taught Unohana healing techniques and his demeanor with her suggest that he is definitely one of her seniors or at the very least parallel in class. Since Healing is Kido based, I think it's a very plausible theory.

Character designing is true art and Kubo has mastered it. Posture, clothing, colors, physique, facial expressions. A still image of someone can explain their entire character and arc. Kubo excels at it.

The og gotei 13 the strongest version it has ever been and for good reasons too these guys looks menacing and merciless as hell and for yamamoto to have the strength and charisma to band all these ruthless criminals together really tells a lot about his character when he was in his prime.
They all look so cool. I really hope the Hell Arc ends up becoming a full arc and that we get to see the original gotei, all the previous kenpatchi, and other characters we’ve loved and lost. It’d be so awesome.
Perhaps the 0 squad was established at the same time as the gotei 13, with at least ichibe and the inventors of the key tools (zanpakto and the uniforms, both of which they clearly already have) being recognized for their contributions and elevated without going through the captaincy at all. As for the established relationship to current characters, perhaps in the past they were more closely related to the gotei, spending time amongst them, and the seeming total isolation in the royal realm is a comparatively recent occurrence

0 squad was made up of former captain of course those captains would later die and be replaced by other captains in the 0 squad which is why they suck so much now the current 0 squad not really based on strong fighters but rather achievements in making stuff.

The guy in the bottom left looks SO GREAT. I love his design, very unique and very threatening and brutal. I think this group might include all 5 noble families. Shihoin, Kuchiki and Shiba seem obvious. I think the very top right or the bottom left might be Tsunuyashiro

I have a feeling Senjumaru probably would have had an affiliate status with the Gotei 13, not being a proper member but being affiliated with them. Maybe after the death of one of the 12th Division captains, they thought of her as a suitable replacement and she accepted the position.
Kubo does always have an antagonist group for each arc. Gotei 13, Espada, Xcution and the Sternritter so maybe this will be the antagonist group for the Hell arc. Too many good and well thought out designs just to be used for one episode

There is A LOT of personality in this one image alone. From the appearance, to how they hold their sword, and even where they're positioned in the layout tells a story about each character.
This spread is surreal. I wondered about the lineup of the OG captains for so long, and yet Kubo didn't disappoint with this reveal.
This photo has brought so many more questions to mind😭 I can't wait to see the next episode and I sincerely hope that Kubo actually expands on this original Gotei 13. I hope he sees how curious the fans are about them and decides to give us the backstory. Also at this point, we know that Nimaiya and Senjumaru were alive at least because they're carrying zanpakutos, plus Nimaiya was around since Yama faced Ikimikidomoe and they're wearing the clothes Senjumaru created so 3 out of the 5 Guards are accounted for. Tenjiro is the wild card.
We will probably meet all of the og gotei 13 in bleach sequel manga, Hell arc will answer many such questions as all the dead captains go there

My favorite of these captains from design alone is the unassuming lady with the pole arm. I love how much her aloof expression clashes with these other morose/psychotic killers. Her weapon is also pretty unique, as we don't see to many spear users in Bleach, and those that exist don't get the best showing.

@@animanco6833 They would not be reincarnated due to what we know of the Hell Arc. Likely some of them were killed during the war with the Quincy and the others just killed over time. Soul Society was a lot rougher and life expectancy would be a lot shorter. Any of those whom died are now stuck in Hell.
I have a theory that Senjimaru is most likely the young woman in glasses that you theorized was the most terrifying of them all. She’s got the most similar appearance and I could see that as a young wide eyed and excited version of her.

The Gotei 13 was created by Yamamoto. The Zero Division by Ichibe. They were founded at relatively the same time. The Zero division members were alive at the same time as these original 13 Captains but fulfilled separate roles.
Being fewer in number, the Zero Division is not as divided up into categories as the gotei 13. You have one member who makes the weapons, another who names them, one who makes the clothes, another who provides food and restores Spiritual Pressure, and another who heals. The Zero Division is designed to work separate from the Gotei 13 but supplement them only to the extent in which the Gotei 13 prevents issues from getting to Zero Division.
It isn't strange that Shutara has access to the 12th Division not because she must have been in charge of it at some point, but because the nature of her position in the Zero Division (A seamstress of sorts) is that she understands and works with the fundamentals of things in the Sereitei. As if the all the Soul Society is a fabric to cut and shaped as her hands deem fit, but also as if the Soul Society itself (the fabric) had sentience and will enough to greet her and meet her half way "the doors merely opened for me". As if every material the Seemstress would use wanted to be used by her.
In short I don't feel the Zero Division was ever part of the Gotei 13. I think it was more like: "HEY Yama, you're strong but we got a different job for you. Start the Gotei 13 and protect the Soul Society and we'll keep the Soul King cared for and we'll go about our separate functions. Oetsu will supply you guys with weapons, I Ichibe will name them and give them their abilities, Shutara will make the clothes and uniforms so we're not looking like the thugs we know we all are. I'm calling the shots up here so we know why I'm staying, and as for Tenjiro and Kirio. Well we're keeping the greatest healer because if ya'll get fucked up we got make sure we still continue to exist, and a guy's gotta eat so you know why Kirio is sticking around. Got it? Good. Let's get to it thugs. I mean captains." And so it goes.
This corrects any concerns about Shutara's position and Tenjiro could have still have taught Unahana without ever being 4th Division leader. He could have came to The Soul Society to teach her when she made the transition from Kenpachi. Or she could have gone to the Soul Palace to learn. I don't think Ichigo, Byakua, Renji. Rukya, etc were the first Soul Reapers to go there outside the Zero Division (if you can consider them Soul Reapers).
Kubo as always creating some fantastic designs. The Pelt-wearing guy is my favorite, he really looks like the kind of brutal criminal we heard the original Captains were.
Also, if all five of the Noble clans were involved with the first set of Captains, I think it means that we will learn who the final family is. Which is fitting, since we know they were concerned about the threat Hell could pose. And then, they themselves might end up being that threat. Which is some fitting irony considering what they did to the Soul King.

I think the 0 division isn’t in the picture because they were already KNOWN as the 0 division.
In order for the G13 to have uniforms they would’ve already been created which means the 0 division is made out of the people who made the materials possible for the G13 to even EXIST.
I think that this could mean both things that you said. Next episode will tell, but if he's finalized these designs, then I'd assume that means they'll be making more than one appearance
The evil-looking one reminds me of the usual depictions of Ivan the Terrible, or how mythological villains are often depicted in Slavic stories and media-like cartoons. He might be based on the legend of Koschei the Deathless, an immortal sorcerer who hid his heart in a needle, thus gaining immortality (think ancient Lich). His design with the fur coat, beard, exaggerated pale skin, and thin build screams Russian or at least Slavic inspiration here.

My favorite detail is Unohana towering above everyone in the image, potentially implying that she stands above all of them (except Yamamoto) when it comes to her skill as a warrior. No matter what awesome powers all these old captains had, Unohana was likely still the strongest with nothing but her sword and skills.
It will make a lot of sense if this was made as a tease for the new Hell Arc. After Unohana and Captain Commander have died I would believe the full original gotei 13 have gone to hell. Could we be blessed with a battle between the new Gotei 13 vs the very first in some fashion? I am quite hopeful
Hopefully in the end when the original gotei 13 are defeated their souls get released from hell somehow. Otherwise the new Gotei 13 will end up in hell themselves possibly once they die. Shoot imagining Ichigo being in hell once he's dead would suck.
Oh that hit me. When you said unohana and old yama died. They're the only original gotei 13 captain alive so it'll probably happen in hell arc. Let's just hope that kubo is revealing some hints for us.

I've been told in other sources that purple is used a lot in Japanese character design to indicate people who are villainous or sinister. Alternatively, it can also mean nobility. Both of which would be good reasons for purple to be a theme across the original Gotei 13

I have a feeling that we ARE seeing Senjumaru in the original Gotei 13 Captain spread. I think its either the quiet, nerdy looking lady or the pink haired lady with the eye patch. I can see her appearance changing a lot, and asking Oetsu to reshape her zanpakuto for her.

Since we know these guys are all ruthless killers I wonder if Kubo will do some fun expectation subversion with their designs. For example, we know Unohana was regarded as the worst criminal of them all, yet her design is one of the more unassuming & vicious looking of the ones here. So maybe it'd be a cool thing if the really sinister guy in the front left was actually the first captain of Squad 4 and the healer of the group? Or if the orange haired man w two swords who looks somewhat heroic is actually the guy who's the next most brutal to Unohana.
I believe that Tenjiro Kirinji is still the healer of this time and that the healers in general were not directly part of the Goteii 13. I see it as these 13 being the lead soldiers, whereas any superfluous groups (healers, researchers, etc...) would all be separate divisions to focus on their specialties rather than being soldiers. The main Goteii 13 were recruited as killers after all, I doubt they'd recruit healers to part of that group.
@@lo4tr Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Healing techniques use a combination of Kido techniques. So couldn't there be a possibility that Kirinji might have been the part of the Kido Corps, maybe even be the Commander of the Kido Corps. We all know that there is a separate specilised squad for the kido corps. Couldn't that be a possibility?
Orange hair man doesn't have two swords. The other sword belongs to the big guy behind him.
In ancient Rome the color purple was very rare and was used to symbolize Nobility or Diety so maybe that's one of those Kubo hints.
That may be a possible inspiration.
Another possibility would be the japanese cultural meaning of purple, that being of death ,venom & evil.
This association of purple with badguys is pretty strong even today, to the point that when media is localized for japan , good characters who have purple in their designs are recolored( jp version of Rayman comes to mind)

I’m pretty convinced that Unohana likely believed the same ideology Kenpachi did, that being she didn’t need to commune with her sword for strength. I wonder if she learned her Shikai after training intone healing arts, hence why Minazuki in shikai is able to heal. PLEASE I hope we can get a hell arc
I agreeee , it could very well be difficult for unohana to unlock her zanpaktou and then when she did , she literally played with opponents for the fun of fighting
I always thought about it in a different kind.
I think Unahana only cared for the maximum amount of power, that's why she never really bothered to learn anything about shikai and destroyed everything with her insanely powerful bankai.
I'm dying to see more of Unahana, just love her.
I reckon the glasses girl is actually an ancestor of Nanao, Kyouraku's lieutenant.
The glasses, black hair and the fact that she wields a weapon similar to Nanao's family weapon seem to add up, plus Nanao is known to be absolutely terrifying when she wants to be, so could be a lesser form of whatever that women did to be known as a blood thirsty killer.
That or Lisa, his previous lieutenant, for much the same reason.
I also personally think the guy you think is a beast clan member is potentially Kyoraku's ancestor, just due to relatively similar looks, and though it might be a stretch, his proximity to the woman I mentioned above.

Your take on supposed founder of the 7-th division is actually the most interesting I've seen for today.
It could be a good possible way to tie Beast realm to the plot in Hell arc. Or maybe even organising Komamura's return as an active character in the plot.
When this was revealed we all finally knew why everyone feared Unohara even though she looked harmless.

They all look SICK, Kubo yet again making dope as hell looking characters. Hopefully we get to see them in action during the Hell Arc if we ever do get to see it continued.
The Female captain with the pony tails and eyepatch has a really cool design ngl. Sorta has a ‘Baiken’s younger sister’ vibe.

Is it weird that I wasn’t expecting to see any of the zero division members in the original captains group? I thought the zero division members were selected because they were smart and created something that became super important to Soul Society and the soul reapers. So the uniforms, the food, the healing, and the asauchi. It wasn’t until they got to the Soul Place that they became super strong, by training or by having their bones turned into the oken.
if you think about it, only Senjumaru could make an appearance, but not necessarily. Hyousube was already a different thing/level, a creator of asauchi and a creator of healing techniques can be important people and have power without being one of the captains of Gotei

@@gammafrost Zanpakuto were created before the gotei 13 was a thing, so he didn't need to part of it. The only other person I can see being a part of the gotei 13 other than Hikifune would be maybe Tenjirō.

This is the Gotei 13 of Killers they mentioned and I've got to hand it to Tite Kubo because they do look like a bunch of Conquerors and Thugs 😆 very intimidating bunch. I would love a prequel of them during their prime and hay day before they got disbanded and killed off
The creepiest thing is how eye patches are used to restrict full power. I can’t imagine how powerful that girl in pink/purple hair is when there is already a kenpachi in the group

Maybe she just leaks tonnes of reiatsu and is unable to control the flow unlike the others, so maybe she is the hand grenade of the group, you throw her at the issue until the issue is no more.
She could either be one of the weaker members or the third strongest, with yama at the top and unohana beating her because our eyepatch capatian might not actually know proper sword techniques and just relies exclusively in brute force and single minded determination, while unohana as the kempachi would know proper sword fighting and would beat her

My assumption regarding the Zero Squad is that they were formed a bit later. The people who were responsible for guarding the Soul King during the earlier time were selected members of the Royal Family. At this time, the Zero Division members, while they were not captains they could probably some of the more important individuals in the Gotei due to their innovations and stuff.
Something that I think really good stories do is having even more story to tell from many years before the current time. And I think Bleach is one of the best series at doing this. There is treasure trove of stories to tell with the early days of the Gotei 13.
The old hunch back guy is the healer guy. He invents the healing pools and regains youth.
Senjumaru could potentially be the woman with black hair and glasses in the upper-left corner. She’s in shikai (or has a unique sealed form), and the majority of what we see of her zanpakuto is gold. It’s kind of a stretch, but I could see it.

Really amazing surprise, some of them seem to be ancestors of current characters and possibly with similar abilities, if the hell arc happens it would be very interesting to show this old group, Kubo has a lot to show yet, I hope he is inspired to show all of this soon.
I appreciate Kubo's talent for character design so much. I feel the same about Oda.
It's really easy to have characters who look the same especially when there are so many. But Kubo's style is so unique. These days, it seems that anime and manga characters all have the same generic face shape, eyes, lips etc.
But both Kubo and Oda give us character who all are distinguishable from eachother even when they do look similar.
Like Askin and Aizen. They look similar, but different enough that you could never mistake them for eachother.
I don't think Oda fits into this example because he makes characters with very different anatomies and sizes. Looking at similar base designs, I think Kishimoto stands out the most.
They look really nice, and I hope that we will get more of their backstory in Bleach anime.
I’ve always admired how the need for awesome character design when they all have the same uniform is a necessity but Kuno exceeds that challenge. It’s subtle things he does but I often hardly notice they are all wearing the same thing because their designs are that good
I hope Kubo does another 1 shot at least giving us a bit of info on the original captains. I feel that the zero division was already made by this time because from I remember everyone that who is apart of it has contributed to the soul society in a major way.
0 squad was made up of former captain of course those captains would later die and be replaced by other captains in the 0 squad which is why they suck so much now the current 0 squad not really based on strong fighters but rather achievements in making stuff.

Concerning Oetsu, in addition to the light novels there's a line in the manga that suggests he's been around since the beginning of SS which would put him almost as old as Ichibe - maybe another Plus originally born in the primordial world.
I am pretty confident about 7/13 squad numbers.
1. The Shiba looking guy 10.
2. Yama 1.
3. Unohana 11.
4. The Shihoin Guy 2.
5. The hat guy is probably a Kuchiki so 6.
6. I had the same theory about the fur guy because if the smoke that looks like transformation smoke, 7.
7. The girl that I have suspicions she is an Ise 4.
8. the Aizen looking guy 5.
9. the granpa 13.
10. The pinked hair girl might be the reason Katen looks like that we had the same situation only 3 more times in the story (Azashiro, Kisuke, Kenny) 8.
11. the tall person on top right 3 because they are a bit creepy.
12. the other glasses guy behind yama might be 12 but the last guy looks a bit crazy as well
13. and 9 is left for the huge guy with the red tattoo.
Everyone make predictions to see if we are right in the end.

Pretty much my list of the captains goes as follows
1) Young Yama
2) Dark skinned person (possible ancestor of Shihoin clan)
3) Top right guy that looks like Rose with Kira's emo hair
4) slick back hair (may be a younger Kirinji, same hairline and similar facial fetures)
5) Bald guy (mostly process of elimination)
6) Right of Unohana (possibly a younger version of Byakuya's grandfather or his grand-father?)
7) fur coat (Looks like the most vicious besides Unohana. Could probably have started the 7th vs 11th division rivalry that sometimes went on. Also has kinda Iba like facial hair and the fur looks similar to Komomura)
8) Eye patch girl (Clear similarity to Shunsui and Katen)
9) Tattoo face (tattoos are a pretty common trope in squad 9 like Kensei and Shuhei's 69)
10) Wrist guards (possible ancestor of Shiba clan)
11) Unohana
12) Glasses girl (I think she kinda looks like she could possibly be a younger Senjumaru)
13) Old guy (Looks pretty sickly and wise which is kinda similar to how Ukitake is portrayed for most of Bleach. Also we know him and Shunsui are some of the first from Yama's school to be promoted to Captains, and this guy looks like he is very close to croaking any second)
I really believe that they are all cold blooded killers. All of them, not just the ones that come first to mind.
This would of course give them the perfect position to be the antagonists of the hell arc (including Unohana and Yamamoto with some weird explanation).
I also think that the numbers of the divisions was created by the order in which these captains joined Yamamoto

@@kaimanthelizardwizard1248 I honestly dont think that would be enough. We probably need many 2 vs 1 as they are probably that much more powerfull than the current Captains. Luckily the Soul society has 13 Captains with bankai aswell as the 0 division, some Vize Captains with bankai or Close to bankai, the vizard that became no part of the gotei again, the Team around Shop uraharra and some Other alies like the fullbringers or the remainig espada (maybe quincie?) aswell as Team ichigo of course (and aizen? I guess). The Numbers are there. But who knows what else might be lurking in the shadows of hell. Do we find some alies or even more enemies in the hellfire?

I like your theory on creepy pirate guy but i'd like to propose my own theory theory that he's got an ice themed Zanpakto. Giving me real Siberian hardass vibes. The mist around him makes him look like he radiates cold like Yamamoto's bankai radiates heat, and I think his discoloration (especially around the hands) hints to something like frostbite. He could still be a beast man, and I think it would be fitting if he turned into a Russian Bear
I believe that Kubo does things like this on purpose, so that he can hear your in depth analysis of his work. You're really good at this.

You know, there were a lot of talk about how the current gotei are the weakest version we've seen. Even though, I agree that the first gotei are undoubtedly THE strongest out of all (which are looking really awesome in this art, btw). There's one thing the first gotei didn't have that the current do. The current gotei are friends with Ichigo, the fact that I would always took into consideration.
The most exciting part is that Kubo could have had these ideas stewing for a decade ever since he drew the original silhouettes. These characters just look fantastic, like I would love to read an entire volume just about these characters alone even if they are only loosely related to the Bleach lore as we know it.
19:03.....it's entirely possible Senjumaru Shutara is the girl all the way to the left, considering her hair and eye color matches, and she looks like Kuna(who is modified/created by Mayuri), also the twintail girl on the right might be Kirio Hikifune considering same hair and eye color, and considering Hiyori's hairstyle.
She has nothing to do with Hiyori and both eyes still there

@@holeeshi9959 From what I recall, Kirio doesn't come around until much later. And, I think that Senjumaru is relegated to being more of a seamstress than a soldier at this point and likely not recruited to the main fighting forces of the Goteii 13. Same with Kirinji being a healer.
Senjumaru was recruited in the royal guard for inventing the shihakushos, and from Yamamoto's flashback we can see shinigamis' already wore them before the Gotei so she probably was already part of Division 0. Meanwhile we know Hikifune became part of it just a hundred years ago, and they actually look nothing alike
The first Captains of the Gotei were the bloodthirsty defenders. There was no need for some of the Zero Division to be with them. They were probably supporting from behind - The Blacksmith, Seamstress, and Healer.
Later on when the Wars declined maybe they made the duties of each squad more niche and got specialized Captains.
Senjumaru got promoted to Zero Divison because she made Shihakusho, which means she was already in Zero Division when there was 1st Gotei.

Looks like the ending of this week's episode tells use which division each is a captain of. Very interesting that it wasn't as we thoigh for most of them. But it was still very good.

I was pretty stoked about this reveal too but quickly became bummed when it didn't grab the cameo/backstory opportunity for any of the Royal Guard members, especially with Oetsu since we see them all holding their zanpakutos here or Senjumaru because of their garbs (I do like your theory that she's a junior at this point and got promoted a little later). Is it possible that Oetsu predates the Gotei 13 back when they weren't formed yet and he was just an eccentric blacksmith somewhere in Rukongai who caught the attention of the Soul King? You can't possibly get in the Gotei 13 without a zanpakuto (can you?) so it must have been invented way before. Ichibei is definitely older (the oldest?) since he named everything in Seireitei. As for Kirinji, there definitely would've been some forms of medicine/healing before him and his hot spring water treatment was a novel idea that got him that promotion.
