We've had our puppy for 4 weeks now and we have got her used to her crate but we mainly use it for travel. We don't use it for rest other than during the night and feed all meals inside it. When she should rest we get her to calm down using exercises we've learned from you, and then she gets to sleep on a blanket on the sofa. She comes up to us and seeks eye contact and sits before being allowed up, all thanks to what we have learned thanks to you. You are truly invaluable, thanks for all the great content.

Hey there, my name is Paul I live in the UK and in a couple of months my partner and I will be getting a Rottweiler puppy already named her Athena. Was online reading a whole bunch of stuff and came across at your videos on TH-cam and I have to say a big thank you words are all well and good but seeing it in practice and seeing a person actually do it is essential especially for me I’m a very visual learner. So between now and the time we pick up our little girl I will be doing some training with your videos meeting watching them understanding them thoroughly buying all the equipment that I need in full preparation for when she arrives.
Once again thank you so much for your awesome videos they are very much appreciated specially from us.

Such a cute pup on the thumbnail. Excellent tips! My boy is 4.5months and recently started testing boundaries. He has so much energy I find it hard to wear him out enough even with a great game of fetch and trick training. I'm impatiently waiting for agility club to open again to get more ideas to keep him entertained and learning. He loves learning new tricks.

Thank you for this video. I have been becoming frustrated with bad behavior and needed to be reminded that the puppy needs to be in the crate unless I can give her undivided attention. Kayl, I love watching you work with the dogs. You demonstrate the perfect balance between fun/loving and assertive. You correct without the use of anger or punishment, quick and simple but effective, and you focus on the rewards. Some trainers I find are too reward focussed and afraid to correct their dogs. I think this is a disservice to the animal. Thank you for showing us how it should be done.

I’m in Australia and have a 6 month border collie.
She is good at listening when at home.
Park is pretty good. Problem is she is very very distracted with other dogs or people. Treats etc she isn’t even interested in.
Went to a puppy training centre. She is so distracted with the other dogs.

    Thanks,

Is there really no time out of the crate without the puppy being my focus of attention? I'm reaching my limits. When will I have time for myself again without having the puppy in the crate?
With all the puppy's sleeping time, that makes already 14 hours of crate a day. Putting it in for additional time seems really much to me.
Can't it lay on my feet or play with its toys?
    Thanks for your answers.
I really like your videos. They are a great source of training for me!

I have a question. I have an 8 week old puppy and he is dong great using your tips, 2 days and no accidents!. I am working at home like many these days, but I am concerned about over crating. I have a puppy play pen set up in my office right near me with chew toys. So my question is whether or not this is confusing for the puppy and should I just stick the crate when I am not taking him out to potty, training sessions and play time?

  • @doomy6728

Our havanese puppy is 20 weeks old. We have had her since she was 9 weeks old. The potty training has not been successful for she still has quite a few accidents in the house. She sleeps through the night from 9-6. How long should she be staying in her crate during the day (I know puppies need 16-18 hours of sleep) and how long should we be keeping her out to play and train with her? We also have another dog who likes to play with her when she is out of her crate. Also, on days where it rains, which happens a lot over the summer almost every day, she is afraid to go out to go potty when we take her out of the crate. We will end up carrying her out to go somewhere, but she ends up scratching us, fighting to go in. It's been frustrating, and I feel like she sees our frustration. By the way, we love all of your videos. They have been so helpful. The best we have seen so far. =)

Do I have to use food reward, I have trained to sit, stay and wait for me to place food bowl down and then command they can eat . My struggle is for them to listen most when wanting them to be in house and not roam , eventually will just relax but takes a bit . Also is there a list of commands best to use , to sit of course sit , stay etc.

First of all, thank you. I watch McCann dog training videos frequently and they have helped me a lot.
After watching this video, I do have a question. I have a 3 months maltipoo who will grow to max wright of 7 lbs. So if I understand correctly, when I start the crate training, the puppy is supposed to be in crate all the time except for potty breaks, walks, exercise and training. Did I understand you correctly? I have been using a crate and a pen. He is not a good listener and listening to you it looks like I did not handle him correctly. :o) Please advise.

Are there any videos for training older puppies, I have a 7 month old border collie/ Australian Shepard I got from a family who was going to send him to the pound because they could not deal with his ‘too much energy’ living in town. He has little to no training, can not walk on a leash, they had him on a retractable with no control. I’ve just begun teaching to sit and lay down, he is a constant jumper on people and furniture and headbutts me in the chin regularly when attaching leash. I’m implementing these bonding/training and bonding techniques but is there any tips to handle the jumping?

Hi there! Do you have advice for teaching opportunities when our puppy is not food motivated? I haven't tried giving her treats yet, given she doesn't seem too interested in her food (same food the breeder was providing). I'm afraid if I give her treats she will become even less interested in her regular food.

I’m getting my puppy in a couple weeks. I really want to feed her homemade training treats since, I’m really afraid of giving her commercial treats. Do you have any tips on that?

How do you do treats everywhere and for every good decision without over feeding?

  • @JennyYasi

Be careful if you have a dropped line on a dog who is romping around other dogs, they could get tangled together, tangle around another dog's leg, and cause an injury.

Hi my 16 week old puppy is barking at me for the food when training... How do I stop this, I don't want to mess up the training we have done and want to progress on to other things. She is doing the command (sit) but barking whilst doing it! Help?

Love the concept of full attention on puppy when out of the crate but what if they are too afraid to ever be in the crate? Ours will lay near it but never go in and even if we lure him in with food he’ll immediately freak out when he’s done eating. He also won’t let us leave the room (even when he seems to be sound asleep). I assume this is separation anxiety and we are working very very slowly on it but in the meantime he’s making plenty of “mistakes” as it’s impossible to watch him 24/7 and have no crate time

?? Something that I’m struggling with is how much time should my 5 month old puppy be in the crate? My husband and I work full time but very close to our home, so we get to go home on lunch to walk her and entertain her for about 1-1/2 hours. When I get home from work, she’s basically out the rest of the evening until bedtime when she goes back in the crate. It’s exhausting though because when I’m home in the evening, it’s non stop play/entertaining and training. We do put her in the crate while we eat dinner now, which has helped all of us. But, how long should those training sessions and entertainment sessions go for? She does tend to get real nippy when she’s frustrated or even tired but won’t rest.

Hi guys, you make the best puppy videos out there! Could you please make a video on how to live with a puppy in the first couple of weeks? For exemple: the first night. We' need to show the puppy that the crate not only is a place where good things happen, and then it'll spend the first night there (and maybe it won't like it at all). Should the crate have a little bed (some people say that crates should be totally empty while the puppy is inside)? OK, then comes the first morning: is it better to take the puppy out for potty right away? Should we play, feed, show the puppy how cool his/her crate is? How should we lure the puppy to get in the crate (and having it stay quietly so we can work for a couple of hours? 😂How long should we keep the puppy in the crate before it goes potty, play, eat again? So suggesting a detailed schedule, and showing how to do things, would be just AMAZING. Sorry if I'm asking too much! We have adopted adult dogs in the past, so we're newbies in terms of puppies... And we know they need a lot of routine/schedule. Thanks a bunch ✌️

my puppy whines and jumps against the crate door when i close it, but doesn't mind being in there with the door open. How can I get her to stop whining and jumping? she won't just self settle or stop long enough to reward and even making noise doesn't interrupt her behavior.

My puppy has such a food drive, that if i try to train her during her meal like give her food by hand she just acts like a goblin jumping at the bowl knocking food out and gobbling it up as fast as she can. I have a spiral slow feeder bowl that slows her down but shes just as crazy going after the slow feeder bowl since its just more difficult. Idk how to calm her down about food.

I have a puppy question. My puppy is 10 weeks old. How can I stop my puppy from being aggressive with my older 10yr old dog?? They play fine together until my puppy decides to play aggressively with my pretty patient older dog??? And sometimes they are good together and sit together or groom?? I don't understand. Thank you.

My puppy is 13 weeks old and not crate trained. He is getting better in the crate but I have not expected him to be in there very much. We have 2 other dogs and they spend a lot of time playing. He is good about paying attention to me but I’m wondering if this might cause problems for us a little further down the road? I’m also wondering if he might not be getting enough down time?

HELP my 6 month husky Shepard will only potty in his cage and will not go outside. Since we’ve had him he will not go outside. We do like in a carpeted second story apartment. At this point potty pads won’t even help. He goes straight to his cage, and even if we take him out when he attempts to go, he stops and waits until he’s back in the cage. Help :(

Every time you say “puppy” I wonder until what age are your tips applicable? Our Australian shepherd pup is 3,5 months old but he often acts like an adult dog so I’m confused if I should treat him as small puppies you’re often showing in your videos.
For example, he’s not used to staying in crate with the closed door, starts screaming if you leave him in there for 15 seconds. Should we keep him lie there? He’s so used to wondering around the apartment and sleeping in the floor in his favourite corners.
Our pup has hours when he’s going crazy but most of the time he’s collected (and quite stubborn). 😂 Also not strongly food motivated.

My rescue will barely look at me and I can’t get her to come. Even out of her crate. But I’ll try some better treats. I’m a solo dog owner so I can’t just run to the store and grab some cheese and chicken. But I’ve only had her 6 days. She just turned 8 weeks 2 days ago! She doesn’t follow me around unless she’s trying to attack my pants/shoes when we’re outside. Or trying to bite my hands/feet when I’m playing with her (or working on training). I have never had a dog like this. Anyone reading the comments have any suggestions?

I don't like it at all. Why don't you lock yourself in a cage. If you don't have the time and the right conditions to keep your dog, stay away from them
