  • Hello and welcome! In this video I take a spalted sliver birch log and make a curvy bowl on the woodturning lathe.
    I originally got this wood in April 2021 and it had been sat under a cover until October 15th when I prepared and sealed this blank. The plan was to set it aside again and wait a little longer for the piece to dry out some more but.. after seeing the spalting I couldn't wait any longer so here it is.
    Shaped and sanded to outside to 320 grit, sealed with Chestnut Product's Cellulose Sanding Sealer and polished up with Yorkshire Grit Original and Microfine. The inside was sanded and coated with flaxseed oil.

    We cut down a bit of our hawthorn hedge on Monday and as I was throwing it into the skip I thought, 'I really should be sending this to Pog.' But I didn't. Oh well.

    Thats a very nice piece mate. i also realy like the forstner bit; where did you get it ?

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Andy, much appreciated! It's a Milwaukee set of 5 I picked up a few years ago, 29mm --> 65mm. They have removable threaded spike centres too so if you take it out it leaves a flat bottom with no poke hole, worth every penny!

    • @tfturning
      @tfturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! To remove the bulk from the middle? I'm using a Jacobs chuck with a Forstner drill bit (65mm I think). Thanks for watching.
