I feel like there's something a lot scarier when these videos involve real life stuff, rather than just a private recording. I guess the idea of this thing haunting numerous people just makes the whole world's atmosphere feel dimmer and darker.
This is hands down the best one yet. I loved this, everything about it really struck me with awe. The scripture with the sticky notes on it, the prototype commercial and the "end this once and for all" text. This tape is so different from the other 6 and is so intriguing with the really vague scripts and commercials.
That was...well, for a lack of a better term, amazing. The general aura to the whole thing was unsettling, the usage of beta footage was really well done, and that ending...even though the video's only a few minutes long, I'm not spoiling anything; that ending genuinely creeped me out, way more then the original upload's did, no doubt. Fantastic work as always, Greenio; I can't wait to see your future content, both in this series and your other stuff, too!
during the ending, he uses a distorted "Is That The Door?" sample off the zero g altered states sample library. it was also used in postal 1, max payne, silent hill, and half life 2
I think this "Jim" guy is a vital character to these tapes and I think he's the guy playing these "personalized" copies of Mario 64 to begin with. I'm pretty sure what's happening here is Jim is living in a personalized hell where he has to beat Mario 64, a game he tried so hard to contribute to, in a very cryptic way. In this case, he needs to reach the "4th floor", a concept he tried pitching to Nintendo (look in 1:06). It seems like everytime he dies he needs to restart (Look in 5.30.97, after Mario dies he's being sent into a white void to restart) and each one of his playthroughs are different. The phrase "It's time to wake up" is repeated throughout all the tapes and what I think they mean by that is Jim needs to beat Mario 64 (presumingly by reaching the 4th floor) so he can finally "wake up" and escape his own hell. That's just my theory though.
Man another good one. Loving the new additions to this lore from existing theories like the fourth floor and cold cold crevice. Also I’m guess the “I’m not having fun” is in reference to the Wario “you want fun? Wario show you fun”
So here is what the 7 tapes each mean 11 November 1995 - Scrapped commercial with dark backstory 20 December 1995 - Accidental commercial airing 22 January 1996 - Internal Castle Plexus 5 November 1996 - Wario Apparition 11 March 1997 - L is real 2401 30 May 1997 - Scrapped creepy ending 2 September 1997 - BoB threatening error effect
If any of you ask, the track at 1:34 is Half Life 2's radio. Same on as in 05.30.97, but slowed down. I am unsure about the backwards music at 1:17 though.
I actually realized something. The canceled ad is somewhat similar to the rumble pack ad they had were a Sega and a Sony goon kidnap a Nintendo employee and interrogate them. Heck that weird Mario head doodle looks like the Mario doll’s head when squished by the vice grip they used. This and the Mightyman and Yuk mention in an earlier video (which was a real cartoon) add the spice of realism to these for me, great work Greenio
The concept of this is actually really intersting!! I love how this meme brought more interest towards what SM64 could've been. Especially since it was such a revolutionizing game! Also love the ending xD
Tbh, there really is a difference in quality between the original and the re-upload. I'm so glad you care a lot about this project and it's quality, this kind of stuff really brings back memories to a lot of us, and the effoert that you put into it just makes it better! Thanks, and i cant wait for the next tape!
I love the Mario-Wallace at 0:23, such a nice funny touch that sounds like something people would do in production, and relevant for the time (at least, I think it would be)
The best part of these tapes are the subtle hints at things. Something like in the last tape the player dying. You can hear them mashing the buttons, getting faster and harder before the slow down and completely stop before Mario dies as well. Things like that make these tapes awesome.
1:50, I could clearly recognize "radio" from from half life 2, if you actually haven't used the file in your video, then the coincidence makes this whole thing even more disturbing.
I gotta say, I love how the script is based off of (I'm pretty sure) an actual ad! I saw it in a video once, it's a nice touch and makes this seem more plausible, too!
You know what would be the ultimate troll move? Replacing actual Super Mario 64 roms in emulator sites with these modded "personalized" copies, imagine the game going as you expect for the first few hours only for things like this to start happening out of nowhere.
Oh, this is GOOD. I'm hoping that "yes this is an ARG" thing wasn't just a joke (I mean, it probably was, but I hope it wasn't) because that would be AWESOME.
1:28 - Mario after his thirtieth run-in with the Wario Apparition. You can't see it on account of him not having a face, but he is understandably quite annoyed by the specter's constant pranks...
The remastered version has the monologue discouraging the mission about "destroying the core" because it's correlating to Jim's false memories after he had a seizure.
Okay the sudden faceless Mario made me drop the phone real good. Definetly much better than the past version, but that one was good too
Same here! Didnt expect it at all, really got me by surprise
