First off Donovan I have to say that you play BEAUTIFULLY!!! A million years ago when I was in Jr. High and High School I was a HUGE band nerd (which I always took as a compliment - LOL). Earlier this year I found my clarinet and oboe in storage boxes upstairs and am rediscovering the beauty that is music once again. I need to buy some new reeds for both instruments since I “tried” to play both, but as my mother so lovingly told me when I was in 7th grade band “it sounds like you are strangling a duck in the other room” (nothing but love from that woman) - LOL!!! Anyway, this comment is turning into a novel, so I’m gonna stop rambling and tell you once again that you play BEAUTIFULLY!!!! Keep up the WONDERFUL work!!! PS - Also, just curious but what brand of piccolo are you playing? I’ve ordered a flute that should be coming soon, but I’d LOVE to have a piccolo as well and yours is really pretty and sounds great!!

Keep your pinky up above the Ab key, as that might help with faster passages, because you have more finger flexibility. Hope this helps (even though you didn’t ask)

PLEASE I NEED ADVICE ON HOW TO PLAY THE PICCOLO. I for the life of me cannot play it. For background, I play flute competitively (high school) so my teacher said I should be able to pick it up after a few minutes, but for WEEKS I’ve been trying and I can’t get a solid sound
First of all, I'd suggest letting a piccolo player try to play on it, to see whether you or the instrument is the problem. If you don't know anyone, cover the end of the picc, close all keys and gently blow into the picc (not over it like you'd do while playing, you really want an airtight seal on the to see if some pads are leaking). As a flutist who started piccolo about a year ago I have some tips that worked in my experience. The embouchure is similar, you just have to make everything really small, the hole in my lip while playing is the size of a dry rice corn. Also the sides of my lips aren't spread to the sides like on regular flute, it's more in-between normal embouchure and whistling. You also have to hold the picc higher up your lips because the hole is smaller (for me it's just a few millimeters higher than flute, but you gotta try out what's best for you). To start I recommend playing notes between low g and middle d then slowly start building up your range. I also suggest starting with sheet music from when you were a flute beginner and continue up to your current flute level. If some pieces are too easy for you, play through them still, it's all about getting a stable embouchure you can rely on. Airstream direction and embouchure changes throughout different registers are similar to flute and should come pretty naturally. Just remember, the picc is waaay smaller then the flute and you small adjustments might caude huge differences. Anyway, have fun playing around and happy practicing.
