Now, if Disney had made Robin Hood, and it was instead a live-action adaptation of the fox one (done with mo-cap and CGI), it would have made a billion dollars.
Another great episode, Dan and Roth! I look forward to Charting every week and appreciate all the time and research Dan puts in to this show to make it the best breakdown of the domestic and international impact these financials play in current and future entertainment decisions!
The Favourite recently announced that Olivia Coleman will be considered for Lead Actress and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone will both be considered for Supporting Actress
@@Lily_James I haven't seen the movie yet but from what I've heard I think they're marketing Olivia as the lead because Rachel and Emma have both won before. It's similar to when Nicole Kidman won Best Actress for The Hours even though she had the least screen time of the three female leads.
Bohemian Rhapsody (the song not the movie) was no.10 on the Spotify worldwide charts earlier this week and it has also entered the actual charts. Which honestly gives me life!
Just wanted to share some valuable info about Australian release dates for films. There’s many instances, especially from Disney, where films are released earlier/later than the US release, to coincide with school holiday periods throughout the year here in Australia, depending on the state. I’m sure it’s similar with other countries. Example: Disney released Nutcracker in late November, closer to Christmas. They’re also releasing Ralph Breaks the Internet on Boxing Day (what we call the day after Christmas), and Mary Poppins Returns in New Years Day. Ralph and Poppins are released in the End of Year Summer holiday period in my state here in Australia.
Haven't seen Grindlewald don't plan to but based on what you and Jeremy Jahns said, maybe JKR needs to let someone else write the script if this series goes forward.
Or separate her ideas into the "Dumbledore-Grindlewald history saga" (that she obviously is focussing on) and the "Fantastic Beasts world of adventure" stories (that would equally be worth exploring). Having the films trying to do both at once isn't going to help the storytelling.
On the other half of the hemisphere the kids are on summer vacations so we have three months worth of kids movies coming up, that’s why movies like Ralph breaks the internet or into the spider verse open in January here 👍
El Atelier de Kamui I’m in Denmark, so same hemisphere, but we still don’t get it until February. But it could be down to Danish produced family films coming out for Christmas maybe? There’s at least one
Seeing Robin Hood tank at the U.S. box office puts a huge smile to my face. Though, my biggest fear is that the international market is gonna help this movie make up its budget. I cannot say for other international markets, but I can only say for the Indonesian market. Here's what happened: last Tuesday, I came to see Robin Hood, and I had a hard time trying to find a seat. It was the first time I watched a movie with a sold-out crowd since Infinity War (let that sink in). Last Friday, I came to see Wreck It Ralph 2, and the theater was like a graveyard. Yeah, there's like 4 or 5 people there, but overall, the theater was practically empty. On the one hand, sure, Tuesday that week was a holiday, while Friday was a regular working day. On the other, on that Friday, I found out that Robin Hood was the only film with a sold-out show. Again, if there is any chance Lionsgate wants to make a Robin Hood sequel, their only best bet is the Indonesian market. Though personally, I don't want to see anymore Taron Egerton's Robin Hood in my lifetime. I prefer a sequel to Russell Crowe's Robin Hood over the 2018 one any day.
I'm just here curious to see how long BoRhap stays in the top 5 and where it ends up. In London, screens are still at least half full for it and that's with 3-5 showings a day still.
No one's talking about it, I haven't finished this video yet, so I think Dan will mention it. But it only dropped like 12%from last weekend. That's amazing. I hope that means it's got long legs.
Bohemian Rhapsody is #1 grossing film of the year in Czech republic. And I loved it even though it is not very truthful and I love and overall know the Queen story.
I love you two so much! I can’t believe I’ve followed this show for almost a year now. Also if you have nothing else to talk about next week, maybe look at Burn the Stage and how it broke records for cinema event films despite being a Korean language subtitled documentary, and how it’s actually getting an ‘encore’/smaller rerelease 😊
Dee Raver ooohhh that would be interesting to hear about as well! I’m so sad I’ve been unable to see it as it’s not even getting a theatrical release in Denmark
I honestly cant believe they did another gritty Robin Hood i mean you would've thought after the flop that was last years gritty King Arthur(though i gotta admit i like it as a guilty pleasure)that they would've put it on the back burner if not scrapped all together how many more Robin Hood movies will it take for the studios to realize they do not work and no one wants them the last decent Robin Hood was Robin Hood Men in Tights and that was a spoof comedy

Unbreakable is still in the top 5 of live action opening thanksgiving weekends. Just goes to show how much of an animated opening weekend this traditionally is.
I thought I heard the studio for The Favourite announced Oliva Colman was being poised for lead actress and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are going supporting
I think one of the reasons Ralph Breaks the Internet is taking so long to come out in certain markets is because they have to dub it. My aunt was doing background singing on Moana here in Norway, and that was done a while after the movie came out in the US.
Are you guys going to do a review for the favorite? I want to see it but no theaters near me have it and I don’t want to go out of my way to see it if it’s not good
Two things. First, Olivia Colman has already been submitted for Best Actress, while Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone will be fighting for supporting actress. Second, Toni Collet just won the Gotham award for Best Actress, which means she (thankfully) might not get forgotten.
Am i the only one that thinks Mary Poppins isn't going to do so well? Ill be surprised if it does better than Christopher Robin I mean the original was made over 50 years ago, and its going against Aquaman, Transformers and that animated Spiderman movie. I honestly can't see kids being like "Forget those cool looking comic book movies. Take me to go watch the British, musical , nani movie mommy!"
The reason Ralph Breaks the Internet has a long rollout is that it's a kids movie - so does best when released around school holidays (December/January). International markets don't have Thanksgiving, so it's pointless to release it now in those markets.
Dan, you were talking about Venom perfect boyfriend advertising campaign in China. It seems that we got a similar one. Have you seen Venom dvd trailer? The movie is presented as another Love actually. Hilarious! I love it.
I feel like one of the only period pieces that was kind of ‘hip’ that actually worked was A Knight’s Tale and that’s probably because it was an original story and not just trying to update an old story.
The release roll out for Ralph is pretty standard for the big Disney animations. It's been the same for Chico, Moana etc. I think it's partially due to the high quality dubbing they do for these movies, since they are aimed at kids and Disney won't just cast anyone as the voice of their stars.
This relates to Monday December 3rd, 2018 ------------------- Nice work!! This had to be exhausting. This makes total sense to me. I actually think Venom rode Spider-Man’s back. Please tell me you have a “read only” feed into BoxOfficeMojo’s database. It would make refreshing the data much easier. Data doesn’t lie... I’m in awe (as a fellow analyst)
When comparing movie box office between films released years apart, is the "adjusted" number just adjusted for general inflation, or movie ticket price inflation? I don't know the actual numbers, but I doubt they're the same.
You are not alone. I liked Viggo and Mahershala but I was not impressed by how much they beat you over the head with the "white savior" premise. They lost me with the scene when he stops over on the side of the road for the bathroom and goes back for his wallet.
World release schedule of animated movies (in countries where English is not even the secondary language) is dependent on the median age of the audience. The younger the median age, the most likely they will need to have dubbed versions of the movie, therefore the release is delayed for the voice actors of that country's language to be completed. Movie's that are skewed towards older kids (and adults) are fine with subtitles which requires almost no delay. In Korea it looks like Ralph2 (dubbed and subtitled) will be released in Jan2019 and Spider-verse will be released the same time as the rest of the world
On the part of Ralph Breaks the Internet opening slow around the world, for Australia we didn’t get it on the Thanksgiving weekend because Thanksgiving isn’t a thing here. Instead we’ll be getting it on Boxing Day (Dec 26), the same thing with Moana 2 years ago. Kind of annoying really :/
In may European countries they moved Ralph Breaks the Internet to January because they feared the competition with Fantastic Beasts, which is going well over here
I thought I mentioned this on another Charting with Dan when you all talked about slow international animated movie rollout; they dub animated movies for theaters. That takes time, more time than a simple subtitling. Kids don’t want to read subtitles, and in some cases are so young they can’t, or definitely can’t read fast enough for how fast subtitles would flash by. So they dub animated movies internationally when needed so kids know what is going on story wise. Thus the slow roll out of Ralph Breaks the Internet.
True but with Disney's even more increasing power, you'd think of all the studios out there that they'd be most savvy to already dub their films and not just for the biggest markets such as China, Japan, France & India.
@@stereomanuk movies aren't finished until right up until release these days. A good dub takes time, you have to find good voice actors and they then have to record a good take of the line. Like I said, it isn't as easy as simple subtitles. And even subtitles can be messed up. Koreans complained that a key line by Dr. Strange in Infinity War completely changed the meaning due to the bad subtitle interpretation. Dubbing can be even more nuanced. So, with the down to the wire scheduling of modern movies, add on the time it takes to do a quality dub, then add that to the release schedule of a kids movie, and you have slow roll outs of animated fare.
@@vfplayerWhat are you suggesting the timeframe of a dub is? I don't claim to actually know but looking only at "The Incredibles 2" then I'd guess at 'three months maximum' which if they only dub a film after the final cut is fairly fast to get the nuances, the cadences and mouth movements right. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&id=theincredibles2.htm Are the bad old days of only one or two people dubbing movies for a whole country gone?
I saw the original Head full of Honey a while back, it is a delightful film about the relationship between a granddaughter and her grandpa who has Alzheimers. Hope this is successful seeing as how it's the same people doing a different language version, not some giant studio buying up the property. Either way, the original is delightful and sad and heartwarming and I encourage poeple to see it :D
Venom is not the second highest superhero debut behind Black Panther and in the Top 5 of Superhero solo movies, behind Iron Man 3 and Dark Knight/Dark Knight Rises.
Roth said something about Lin producing the music for Mary Poppins, but I’m pretty sure in a recent interview he said he nothing to do with the music this time around
Roth, could you tell me where you bought your jacket? My daughter loves it and I’d like to get her one for Christmas. I apologize if this is an inappropriate question.
Oh the Till Schweiger movie he made in Germany and it was a huge hit. It depicts ageing and getting dementia/Alzheimer and is totally reliant on a good cast. In the German original his daughter played the granddaughter of the main star. Will she do that here as well?
I believe Fox Searchlight decided that Olivia Coleman is lead and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are supporting. They should think about using Coleman’s upcoming time on The Crown to show how great she can be playing a queen.
Unless movies hold, which would be my plan. You still have to contend with more important things. Maybe someone is exhausted and they choose a movie? Movies without hold will struggle IMHO
Regarding Ralph Breaks the Internet, didn't Incredibles 2 have a long roll out? Maybe because it worked with that, they figured they do it again????? Idk.
It’s going to be a rough week for the box office “audience” in my demo. The focus should be on shopping for gifts for religious holidays anyway. I’m not spending $16 for anything on the slate, but that was likely planned. Maybe relax this week?
Fun Fact about that Til Schweiger: In Germany he was box office gold for a long time, then critics got fed up with his slimy feel-good-bs-movies while at the same time he embarrased himself on national tv several times with political opinions and now kinda everyone turned sour on him. I recommend: do not see that Remake, give Anna and the Apocalypse a shot - not perfect , kinda cheesy high school musical im britain , but real fun and a great cast :)
Remember the US wouldnt have cared about Queen without Waynes World. Sure they were famous and they were awesome on thier own. The fact is they were kind of over in the US by mid 80s the only reason a certain generation heard their music after/because they saw Waynes World. Then they were rediscovered by US audiences
Can we just take a minute and be Thankful for Dan, his hard work, his professionalism, and sometimes, when we're lucky, his rants.👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dan, your chart show makes my week !
Charting is so much better of a show then Box Office Breakdown.
Shouldnt it be robin hood misses the mark?
I think we were all just waiting for the confirmation that Robin Hood flopped. Like it wasn't news, and we already knew.
Now, if Disney had made Robin Hood, and it was instead a live-action adaptation of the fox one (done with mo-cap and CGI), it would have made a billion dollars.
Hit like if Creed 2 was awesome
At least, the movie will be million times better.
I would totally go see that, especially if they got Andy Serkis to do the mo-cap and Lin Manuel Miranda to play the singing rooster.

In terms of solo super hero movies I had thought Iron Man 3 was the largest grossing in foreign markets with 800 million outside the US.
Venom outgrosses Justice League!
Unless movies hold, which would be my plan. You still have to contend with more important things.
Maybe someone is exhausted and they choose a movie? Movies without hold will struggle IMHO
It sucks to see overlord kicked off the charts so soon. I loved that movie
It looks like there will be another big bomb of the year - Mortal Engines.
It's definitely Dog Tooth.
Doesn’t this mark the third or fourth Robin Hood movie they made consecutively which bombed?
