The definite articles in Portuguese are the same as the typical endings of any noun as of the gender and number of the nouns themselves. The indefinite articles would have to come from the Latin word “unum” which means “one.”

Oi, você pode dar alguma dica sobre quando e onde usar o artigo definido? Porque quando tenho alguma dúvida eu normalmente ponho ele nas minhas sentenças por padrão e não sei como arregalar isso.

Do you have a link to the video where you talk about the gender of words.

As English native speakers I think that in general we don’t have as much trouble with noun gender as others would think because we are already accustomed to memorizing so many non standard English pronunciations (being non-phonetic). Portuguese noun gender for me is just something you need to remember along with the word. That said I still make mistakes pluralizing the articles.

É interessante você dizer isso, porque o maior problema que ainda vejo nos falantes nativos de inglês é justamente misturar os gêneros das palavras! Conheço alguns que já são praticamente fluentes e têm excelente pronúncia, mas ainda usam artigos masculinos com palavras femininas e vice-versa!

It’s true we do make quite a few noun/gender mistakes. But I was probably thinking of the time in my class when we discussed exceptions, and I noticed that regarding the common exceptions (such as o dia) was already using it correctly without really thinking about it. But then I had the advantage that when I grew up as a child I would listen to my mother speak portuguese. So even though I didn’t specifically learn it at the time, I was absorbing the accent and some phrases.

Entendi! Realmente, tirando as exceções, as palavras em geral seguem um mesmo padrão quanto ao gênero.
