The Carbon Public Market is the oldest public market in Cebu established in 1901 after the removal of the carbon depot built during the Spanish period. Yes, the public market is named after the carbon depot ready for exports to different parts of Asia. The Carbon Public Market is open 24/7, not every night. It is the food market called The Barracks' that is open only at night. The Barracks is just a temporary structure to house displaced street food vendors who used to occupy the side streets of Carbon Market as the whole market is currently undergoing reconstruction, now at its first phase. All the existing aging structures you see around the area will be gone soon in 5 years' time. The developer is building temporary structures to house affected vendors until the redevelopment is done.
Wow very good knowledge. I didn't know a lot of that. But it did seem like the barracks area was kind of made to be temporary especially compared to the other part of the market.
Actually, the place that you went to with the word 'Carbon' written above the entrance is not the 'night market' per se but a FOOD MARKET. It's just a tiny part of the huge Carbon Public Market, comprising 7 city blocks, stretching from the southern edge where the NIGHT FOOD MARKET is located and up the northern edge where the Senior Citizen Park is located (that area with the towering image of Sto. Nino above a small chapel in the middle, just at the back of Cebu City Hall).
Yes we went all around the market. But a lot of the video was just of that area. We walked by the senior citizen park. If you look in the video and see the horse with lights near the end that was citizens park. We will probably go back to the market again.
