Victorinox Alox Knives: a brief overview

  • In this episode I take a peek at my Vicotrinox Alox Knives. Alox knives feature anodized aluminum scales, most often in silver. The Pioneer, a four implement scout type knife, was the first Swiss Army Knife to feature Alox scales and is probably the most available and affordable pattern today.
    Consider this episode an introduction. I will talk in more detail about the knives shown in the episode in later videos. Let me know what you think of my "Wanderhut" (Hiking hat)

    Love my Alox Victorinox Farmer. The Alox is a wonderful handle compared to the plastic scales.

    My recommendation is the wonderful rancher in alox. It is derived from the pioneer but replaces the can opener with a useful hawkbill pruning blade.

    @2:06 that 90 degree half stop is to have more torque for a flat head screw but also to have it fixed as you strip wire with the main blade (the wire stripper function works along with the blade)… when that is on 90 degrees you can lift the blade, put a wire through and then release the blade… the tension from the blade cuts the insulation on the wire as you rotate the SAK around it and then you can just strip the insulation

    A very good overview.
    Subscribed and waiting for the detailed videos! :)
    I hope you'll clarify a few points like the year stamp being an indicator that it's a Soldier. That's already almost 100% correct if it's in combination with the coat of arms on the front scale, otherwise not. :)
    And the topic of hollow rivet vs. key ring vs. bail etc. is also a complex topic.
    Oh, and a '99 Soldier is by far not "one of the last ones" ;) but I'm sure you know that.

    Really like these alox Pioneers. They are sturdy, strong, easy in the pocket, and always seem sharper to me.
    Tobias, they also make a small alox Bakers knife or Twine knife that has a small serrated blade and worth checking out too.

      I've got one of this baker's knives hiding around here somewhere! I just don't nowhere I put it! This is why I like key ring, bales, and lanyard holes. I can hang the knife up in plain sight!

    Nice video. I understand the "old cross" ran from 1957 - 1999 after which it was discontinued to be replaced by the current style emblem on the Alox knives. My Alox Cadet has the new style, more agessive nail file. Thats a good variation to get.

      There are so many nice Alox colors out there, and I own quite a few of them, but the "standard" blue is still one of my favorites.
      If I had to choose one color only, it would be probably blue.

    Great video. So far I have just the Pioneer. Undoubtedly the strongest folding pocket knives made are these Alox knives. I've even dressed a limit of squirrels with mine, just because I wanted to, and it worked fantastic without need for a touch-up after. No snap on scales for gore to hide under. Great pocket knives.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The blades on the Alox Pioneers are indeed thicker and stouter than the other similarly sized SAKs. They actually are made more robust.

    • @Tilbily
      @Tilbily 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias Not only that, the knife handle appears more robust. The aluminum scales and heavy rivet construction form a strong unit together, if I'm not mistaken. As opposed to pins and bone, Delrin etc.

  • @slick_slicers
    @slick_slicers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The Pioneer X with scissors is my favourite and most used SAK of all. The scissors and the bottle opener are the only tools I really use. If the Cadet had scissors, it might be more used as it has a nail file. I’m planning on getting this year’s ltd editions as they’re blue, which is my political colour. I have the red ones, but here that’s the opposition!

    Does the colour on the red scales wear off and get scratched?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes with time. Surprisingly the silver on the silver alox will do the same. it is also an anodization process. It does not happen quickly but it does happen over time.

    • @marcdee4427
      @marcdee4427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What’s under the silver alox ?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcdee4427 alox. The silver is an anodized coating which gives it a better sheen. The natural color underneath is very similar but you will be able to notice the difference when you examine it closely. This is actually why some prefer the other colors as you wind up with a distinct “pocket worn” character to your knife after years of carrying it. Many actually love this look!

    • @marcdee4427
      @marcdee4427 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias oh I didn’t know that thanks 😊 I’ve just ordered a cadet in silver, we don’t seem to get many colour variations here in England. Thanks so much for the information, love your videos. What’s your opinion of the steel used in saks?

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, it doesn’t flake off. It wears off after long use. How quickly will depend on how much you use it and how roughly you use it. It’s on there preset good. Victorinox knows what it is doing. This isn’t like the anodized coating of cheap knives out of China.
