I have only recently got into these knives and I've fallen hard for them. I started with the Victorinox Walker and I was delighted. Then I was lured with a Spartan. Now I love the satisfying ''snap'' when the tools are closed and I love holding them in my hands. I have since bought the Midnight Manager and the Deluxe Tinker and I can't stop

I only own one sak and that is the classic sd . It comes with the toothpick and tweezers .I use it 2 or 3 times a week , had it for 5 years , does most of what need . I would certainly miss it .

To my taste, the best is the old Golfer 84mm with scissors. I have a couple of them. I often carry a Compact. I use the scissors as much as the blade. The best is the old, very rare, Alumnus, a little on the thick side, being three layers. It has all the tools I need.

Best all around for me is the Alox Bantam and a Celidor Classic SD in the 1st aid kit.

Dan, just subscribed to your channel. Rapidly turning into a SAK addict. Currently have 18 in the collection. My go to light carry is the cadet, but I got the pioneer in mail yesterday and really like it. Also, to those who have not yet discovered suspension clips, get some and you won’t regret it.

Liked and subscribed. Relatively new to SAKS, only a couple years into my collection. I've had a Leatherman Skeletool clipped inside my pocket for the better part of a year and it's become a bit too much for me. I went back to a Climber which is much lighter even though it's three layers, and it works for me. Never had an Alox SAK but definitely in the future. The Alox knives look like they'd fit in well in an office environment and almost seem as much of an accessory as a nice watch. I like having scissors but the Highlander would be high on the list too. I prefer the key ring attached as I use a suspension clip to carry my SAK in my pocket so I dont have so much bulk in the bottom of my pocket. Thanks for the vids I've learned more about these knives just this evening than I've learned in the past year.

Cellidor Bantam is the most lightweight, I think. But it is too lightweight, sometimes I forget about it and then it lies around in some dinner jacket's pocket. So for formal occasions I prefer the Alox Cadet. It's thin, it's got useful tools and it looks elegant.

In my opinion Sportsman is the more complete:

nail file (as small philips screwdriver)
bottle opener (also to leverage, screwdriver and wire bender)
can opener (as large philips screwdriver)
corkscrew (also for the knot + mini screwdriver possibility)

    toothpick
    tweezer
    stainless steel pin slot

I carried several Vics over the years. I learned quick that a smaller, lighter one is better for EDC. I have an Executive that works well for me, but I always find myself going back to a three or four layer 91. I have 84's both cellidor and alox, although those are just for the collection..... But I think that the scale tools on the celli are must haves. I am one of those gross people who use the toothpick DAILY. :0) Plus, my work requires me to move pallets occasionally so I get splinters. That means no alox for EDC.
On a side note, I have carried both a 111 Fireman slide lock and a Rescue tool as EDC for many years! Now THOSE are heavy and big!

I do carry a manager as it had perfect screwdriver, bottle opener and a pen - I normally do not need a pen but then I need it it's really saving some trips also pen works as bathroom door opener if my two year old locks himself in. And pen is mightier then a knife. still the most used EDC tool is a smartphone.

Or, the "Rambler" would cover All your needs , small knife , scissors , file , bottle opener , small Phillips screwdriver , toothpick , tweezers perfect for a day at the Office.Or even better yet, it might be better to be at home with All your SAKs and not be at the Office , then you can carry Any SAK you want 😁👍👍 Decisions , Decisions Dan 😁

The walker is slim and cool, if a bit impractical in urban areas. The saw works great on plastic clamshells and the like.
I carry a super tinker, a waiter, a walker, an electrician, or (rarely) a spartan. I own a cadet, and that or my waiter combined with a classic on the keys would be my slim carry. I also have a sportsman in nylon, and I hang that off my archery quiver.

This guy gets it. Trying to go with a 2 oz SAK, but it’s hard if you want to buy any new knives that are practical. Seems like most knives Victorinox makes are 58mm keychain style knives or 91mm “full-size” knives. 85mm options are limited. I’d go custom, but that can get expensive. Ideal tool would be a special mechanic, th that’s crazy difficult to find and super expensive on eBay. Hopefully Victorinox will continue to innovate and give us more capable medium-size lightweight knives.

For me the Wengers are out because of their can opener and the Evo scales feel good in the hand but they're not pocket friendly. If I'm dressed up and have to take something light I alternate between the Cadet, the Sportsman and the Waiter. Plus I always have a Vic Money Clip so I have the scissors.

  • @lifenature6402

The Manager with pressurized pen is always in my pocket, except when I'm sleeping or under the shower. Than I like the Golfer 84mm and the Compact (one of my favorite). Lately I got an Alumnus 84mm with shissors, a little bulky beeing a three layers. If I need a blade and whish to be minimal I opt for a Waiter.

I don't think you had one there that had a saw.... IMO Swiss Champ is #1 and the bulk and weight is a lot easier to carry around than most people think. #2 is the Huntsman for all the basic tools including scissors and saw. #3 is the Trekker for everyday carry as EDC one hand open knife with locking blade. And if I was to go completely ultra light yet still stay functional, I would go with the Walker and the Bantam if I am wearing a suite or need my knife to be very slim.

I currently carry a waiter (84 mm) with the corkscrew swapped out for a Phillips screwdriver from a small tinker (84 mm)....easy mod.
My next knife will have all the features of the 3 layer Hiker (91 mm) in a 2 layer 84 mm knife:
get a small Tinker (84 mm) and swap out the two short blades ( can opener and bottlecap lifter) with a wood saw and a combo tool taken from the Walker (84 mm).... a perfect marriage requiring just a little file work to clear the tip of the saw down into the knife by trimming down the back spring on that end of the knife.
I wish Victorinox would sell that from the factory...call it the "Small Hiker" ...I bet it would be a big seller.

I've used Huntsman for like 15+ years, and it was so useful all these years. I even used the saw to cut some branches in the orchard. You can use it in areas where no other saw would fit. But then I lost it somewhere in the appartment and cannot find it) So I got the Outrider, and I love it. It's like Huntsman on steroids, so powerful, with knife lock. Now I'm thinking about something smaller like Bantam or Compact. One of the best variants I've seen is a mod called Compact Alox. But that is pretty expensive to make.

How’s this for a solution... classic sd on your keys and use and a bike inner tube sheath on your belt? Obviously choose a size that slips over your belt and cut it allowing for an extra 10mm either side of your knife. I carry my alox bantam like that even wearing a suit and it just hides in plain site and you don’t notice it’s even there. The best place for it to lay flat is either side of you flies inside one belt loop. If you fix it on the side where your belt overlaps when done up then that’s stealth mode territory!😂 I found 120mm hides the silver ends of the bantam and helps to hold it in place. Beauty of it is being a tube you can push the knife out either end. It just sits there held in by friction.

I allways prefere to have two blades on my SAK so I'd go with the Tourist for light edc. I only wish they put a small blade instead of the useless nail file on the Cadet.

To answer you in the corkscrew. I think I’d rather omit that. I don’t open wine or drink alcohol, so I’d rather have a philips there or nothing at all. The philips feels good in the hand. I think that’s the advantage of omitting the back tool. Better feel in pocket and hand.

    Good video, Dan.
I've had, and have, a bunch of SAK's. One of the first things I do with a new one is remove the key ring and file off the tab. I hate that thing It gets in the way, causes hot spots (and blisters), and wears holes in my pockets. Life is just slightly better without it..

I like the Wenger Highlander. I’ve had/carried a translucent model for several years, but now that it is out of production I’ve decided to sharpen/clean it and set it aside for special occasions. Now I’m carrying a 3-layer Camper, which I really do like (I’d trade the corkscrew for a phillips though...), but after watching your video I think I may keep an eye out for something slimmer on dress up days (I don’t work in an office).
Great video, thanks for the comparisons!

@ Rick Temmen... Also, there is a shockingly big difference in how well 2 or 3 of the very same tools work in hand between my new Night Manager and my Classic SDs. The handle is as important... or *more* so, than the tools themselves in determining the knife's effective utility on the task.

A latter model Voyageur might serve you well. Combine with a Rally for the file and Phillips. I most often carry a Compact with a Rally. Now I'll shut up before I start ranting about how Vx gets rid of some of their best knives. Oops, too late.
