My daughter lives in LA. Many crimes are not reported, even assaults when there is not a major injury. If you call and report it the police may not arrive for 1 - 2 days to get the report. They may not show up at all. Even if reported, the current (soon to be prior) DA's office would often not prosecute. My daughter was assaulted and ended up in the ER. A detective went to the assailant's apartment where she admitted it and her brother confirmed it - on body cam. The DA refused to prosecute. People walk into stores, grab an armload full, and walk out. No one stops them or reports it. The true crime rate in LA is at least twice what is reported.
As a resident of LA this is wildly untrue with police response time. Maybe it just depends on what station is dispatching? Also violent crime in the city has been down. Customers wouldn’t report retail crime but the stores sure do and police make arrests often not in public to make for a safer arrest (so bystanders aren’t caught in crossfire) Because of the security tags and serial numbers stolen merch can be easily trace when being sold.

It seems like at some point there will be a lot of hungry people in the big cities of California as the trend in Oakland was in your Oakland video where they are losing many of their stores.
I'm always surprised how big some of these abandoned downtowns are for the original peak populations of 1000 people. Frosts downtown looked big for a small peak population back in the day. Frosts downtown also looked like a time capsule from the 1920's, and the 1930's. It is amazing that these empty down town buildings are still standing despite being empty for decades. I'm sure the small towns can't afford to knock them down.
me & my wife live in Italy, TX! another small town not far from those you visited in this video. a bit shocked you did not pass by the domes in Dawson, a pretty unique housing option. the domes here are rad ! hope you enjoyed stopping by : )
Bonnie & Clyde lived in the wrong era! I think their highest take was under $1.5k, they hit mostly gas stations and back country banks, of course that's in 1930s dollars so that would be about $28k today. But robbers and thieves can get a $950 deductible? Wow! I must not be understanding some of this, can a robber go to ten different stores and get $950 each, or $9,500 a day? If Joe and Nick's TH-cam earnings whittle they can always go the Bonnie & Clyde route or Nick & Joe in Cali. I don't think I would have the stomach to own a merchandise store there, blood pressure would get too high. One would almost have to sit on top of their store with a shotgun every night, or just let thieves take everything. I know I'm missing something legal element here.
I'm not really sure that comparing crime rates per 100K is 'fair' for these low populace towns, seeing as how the more people, the greater opportunity for crime may skew the formula. Don't take this as criticism! Thanks for the hours of pure entertainment y'all provide for us, your vicarious thankful passengers!
ye, it would have been more interesting to see their actual crimefigures...I mean; it's not really fair to inflate a town of around 820 to a 100 k city.
Prop 47 was passed because of our lifestyle changes, that no longer ties us to our previous conditions. Example. In 1975, no one was getting their phones stolen. And phones only cost about $35.00 to $60.00 each, and we kept them in our homes. Today, there are over 1,000,000,000 cell phones in America. With an average cost of $500.00. Most Smartphones average $1,300.00 to $1,800.00. And they are being stolen at an alarming rate, because the owners are so careless with them. This is a burden to put on a local law enforcement unit. The cost of trying to recover people's stolen cell phones would end up costing a huge amount of money.
A midwestern town of 600 with a median household income of $78K would have a tiny but occupied and maybe cute downtown (see your vids from NE, ND, etc.). Texas small towns not close to a big city just hit different.
Very good video. I have several comments. First, I wonder why Frost is not doing better due to its proximity to DFW? As to Dawson, I went through this town on my way to Kilgore, Texas a couple of years ago. Also, Braniff International Airways flight 352 crashed near Dawson on May 3, 1968 after flying into a thunderstorm. As to Coolidge, the poles with the bird on top reminded me what was done in Martindale, Texas during the filming of "A Perfect World". Martindale is now a suburb of San Marcos, Texas, but still has an old downtown. The movie producers did not think the downtown had enough old buildings, so they put up poles and wrapped material around the poles that looked like brick. They also built a frame and poured a very thin layer of concrete over it to look like the entrance. Of course, after the movie was filmed, this stuff did not last long. The movie was set in the 1950s and several cars of that era were used. The ones in the close ups had great paint jobs. The others had a "paint the bugs and all" paint job.
That is very misleading stats. Break it down to the percentage of population there are very very few crimes in that area. For instance in Coolidge there were a total of 26 crimes in one year and of those five violent crimes. And for all we know all five crimes could be domestic that happened in one family. I really enjoy your videos.
Prop 36: California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36 to increase punishments for some theft and drug possession offenses. With the passage of Prop 36, California will now undo some of the key provisions from Prop 47, which voters passed in 2014 to address prison overcrowding by reclassifying some theft and drug-related offenses as misdemeanors.
When it gets to the point where reporting a crime is not worth the effort....crime is not reported. In addition, when you legalize things like drugs...or de-criminalize crime......then that makes the crime figures look better.
Probably a lot of people from the comments are wondering why you don’t occasionally interact with some locals to give your audience an insight into the culture of the towns you visit. Adds another dimension to your videos. You may have good reason and I as a subscriber would like to know. Many other TH-camrs that do the same thing do interact with the locals of the towns they visit. You may have already addressed this question as I imagine I’m not the first to ask or suggest it. This is not a negative criticism of your work just something that pops up in the comments often.
Once the farming died, and there was no, or little economy , everyone moved to Dallas. If you have ever lived in a small town in Texas you will know why they are all empty. C U Next week.
It's always interesting to see the towns with high incomes that look abandoned, and the poorer towns that are well kept. Makes you think that the numbers that the government pulls aren't corect.
My uncle always said Frost was the coldest town in Texas As "There was Frost on the water tank all year round" Also the higher dollar amt is because this is a bedroomn town for mant DFW people.
Proposition 47 was passed by voters in 2014 so no governor's signature was equired. This year Prop 36 was on the ballot. It would increase penalties for certain theft and drug crimes, including doing away with the $950 threshold . California takes forever to count ballots but it looks as if it's passing by a big margin at this point.
In Texas, theft is considered a felony if the value of the stolen property is over $2,500, with this range being classified as a "State Jail Felony" where the stolen property is valued between $2,500 and $30,000
The crime issue is easy… The FBI made crime reporting voluntary so most big crime cities immediately stopped reporting crime- including LA & NY to name a couple. 40% of areas no longer report to the FBI at all. That is skewing the math.
I have been watching your channel for some time and I love it! What site do you use to find the stats? You are the only channel I have come across that shows the stats and I find that very helpful. I am originally from Wisconsin but have been living in the Philippines for the last 6 years with my wife and our son.
Do a video on Richland and Barry Tx my dad was raised in Richland on a farm my mom was raised in Barry farming community when I was a kid. I’m 65 got memories of Barry and the old general store owned by Mr and Mrs Mooney they were probably in the eighties when I was a kid.
The only reason i support Prop 47 is so stores pay for their own security instead of off loading petty shoplifting to police and by extension the taxpayers. Additionally police have more important crimes to pursue, my taxes shouldn’t be going towards petty shop lifting cases. Most smash and grabs happen at major retailers, I guess the ones that don’t have security figure it cheaper to eat the cost. Alot of these thieves are stealing more than $950. Also the $950 limit is just for a felony, it’s still against the law to steal. (Edit: LA resident here) Great video as always btw🇺🇸😎
Interesting ask about $950 ( prop47) … not sure about individual states. In the province of Ontario Canada , our insurance deductibles usually start $1000. If it’s theft you have to file a police report…. Easy math …. Not to file a report?
I nearly choked when I saw you were in Frost, their PD used to have a guy nicknamed Elvis, cuz he looked like Elvis and was an impersonator. I’m sad to see you missed Hubbard, it’s a cute little town, and I want to live there lol. Mind your speed in all of those little towns, I fought a ticket in Blooming Grove for 7 YEARS lol. But I won eventually!
When people are allowed to take from a business so readily, something tells me that insurance isn't the big leak in the money bag that you seem to be suggesting it is.
so ( with that prop 47 thing) that goes per incident? So someone can steal worth of 950 dollars and get away with it...and then the next day again..rinse and repeat?? lmao thats insane. Even just 1 time 950 and nothing happens is already insane...But would that still happen if a store owner has the thief multiple times on camera on many occasions? Police just looks at the value and says; meh its under 950, we won't deal with this?? CA has lost it's mind.

Yes i think there are statistical problems when you get to towns of less than 1000. Probably need a different metric for low populatioin places.
ye, it would have been more interesting to see their actual crimefigures...I mean; it's not really fair to inflate a town of around 820 to a 100 k city.
Mine cost $120 and I don't see any reason to pay more
The streets are very clean, with no litter.
A midwestern town of 600 with a median household income of $78K would have a tiny but occupied and maybe cute downtown (see your vids from NE, ND, etc.). Texas small towns not close to a big city just hit different.
Lived on the tracks that were sold probably in 1972. We drove back & forth to Dallas for work
Very good video.
That’s a dang buzzard..lol stay safe and happy holidays..god bless..
I've seen videos of entire neighborhoods of NYC and SF boarded up and empty. Very different reasons than these dying towns, of course.
I love your videos but this one is probably the most interesting one you've done ❤
Wow, thank you!
When it gets to the point where reporting a crime is not worth the effort....crime is not reported. In addition, when you legalize things like drugs...or de-criminalize crime......then that makes the crime figures look better.
Dawson streets and walkways are stunningly clean!! Awesome
California passed Prop 36, which changed Prop 47, but I kinda thought the subject was off-topic. Stay safe and far off the interstates.
Joe & Nicole, love your videos ❤. ps Cats too😺👍
Once the farming died, and there was no, or little economy , everyone moved to Dallas. If you have ever lived in a small town in Texas you will know why they are all empty. C U Next week.
It's always interesting to see the towns with high incomes that look abandoned, and the poorer towns that are well kept. Makes you think that the numbers that the government pulls aren't corect.
The leaded glass doors in that second building are amazing, worth a few bucks for sure.
This is good for the people of California.
In Texas, theft is considered a felony if the value of the stolen property is over $2,500, with this range being classified as a "State Jail Felony" where the stolen property is valued between $2,500 and $30,000
Thanks!
Thank you!!
What database did you use for your crime stats this week? The charts looked weird as all the individual stats said N/A but high overall numbers.
AreaVibes. The FBI is in the process of updating the numbers.
THANKS JOE AND NIC ❤
The crime issue is easy…
The FBI made crime reporting voluntary so most big crime cities immediately stopped reporting crime- including LA & NY to name a couple. 40% of areas no longer report to the FBI at all. That is skewing the math.
Thanks, Joe!
I have been watching your channel for some time and I love it! What site do you use to find the stats? You are the only channel I have come across that shows the stats and I find that very helpful. I am originally from Wisconsin but have been living in the Philippines for the last 6 years with my wife and our son.
The site I use is Census Reporter, which pulls the latest estimates from the U.S. Census. 😀👍
(Edit: LA resident here)
Great video as always btw🇺🇸😎
Interesting ask about $950 ( prop47) … not sure about individual states. In the province of Ontario Canada , our insurance deductibles usually start $1000. If it’s theft you have to file a police report…. Easy math …. Not to file a report?
I nearly choked when I saw you were in Frost, their PD used to have a guy nicknamed Elvis, cuz he looked like Elvis and was an impersonator. I’m sad to see you missed Hubbard, it’s a cute little town, and I want to live there lol. My in laws live just east of Dawson by maybe 5 miles on Highway 31, Dawson just got a new Dollar General Market, I guess they didn’t like Family Dollar getting all the business. Mind your speed in all of those little towns, I fought a ticket in Blooming Grove for 7 YEARS lol. But I won eventually!
Somehow some of these "abandoned towns" seem more beautiful than Gary Indiana & Camden NJ.
Another interesting video. You should show the names of notable people who were born in these small towns, Wikipedia lists them.
Probably nobody.
He usually does.
The theft thing has to do with insurance the more you complain/report your rates go up so you have to move or pay the premium to be in that area.
When people are allowed to take from a business so readily, something tells me that insurance isn't the big leak in the money bag that you seem to be suggesting it is.
Bedroom Communities of Waco/Corsicana. Cheap land with good access to amenities. Nearby lakes are a plus!
16:10 that's a black vulture. They're common in the southeastern US and often hang out near landfills and dumpsters.
so ( with that prop 47 thing) that goes per incident? So someone can steal worth of 950 dollars and get away with it...and then the next day again..rinse and repeat?? lmao thats insane. Even just 1 time 950 and nothing happens is already insane...But would that still happen if a store owner has the thief multiple times on camera on many occasions? Police just looks at the value and says; meh its under 950, we won't deal with this?? CA has lost it's mind.
We voted for Prop 36 this time around which changes elements of Prop 47.
