      I wonder how durable it is? Rattle can chrome loses its shine kinda easily

    • @repletereplete8002
      @repletereplete8002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I'm a Molotow sponsored artist and it retains it's shine really well and is durable as the company is a graffiti based art supplier which is known for their high quality, long lasting paint and inks. The only drawback to it is it has a very long drying time compared to spraycan chrome.

    Thank you Adam. That show actually helps people realize that not everything always goes as planned. Watching you clean the airbrush gave me time to contemplate the many things that I may not be prepared for, but might better be if I get them done now. Also, I practically forgot i have an airbrush which I stopped using because I couldn't afford a compressor and the canned air is so wasteful. I'll remember to use it as costume season approaches, especially now I have a compressor!

    As a guy who used to airbrush T-shirts at Universal Studios in the early 90s, the Paasche VL double action is the model to have. Cheap, rugged, modular construction allows for personal customization, easy/fast to clean, clears clogs super easily, and sprays just about anything you can chuck at it. You can even use em in less-than-clean condition... Most common setup was three brushes: one for black, one for white, one for all the other colors. Fancy artists had extra brushes for light/med/dark colors. I'm still using my first three Paasche VL airbrushes 25 years later...

    I'm sponsored by Molotow and the liquid chrome is amazing. One of my favourites in all their ranges, it's so reflective, like almost a mirror finish.

    • @Mennenth
      @Mennenth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      just how durable is it? Looks like it should be very durable from this video considering its on a foam that can flex a bit, but on the overnight cure Adam said he could still finger print it. How long is the cure time for a really durable finish? Can it be clear coated for extra durability without losing its luster like so many other metallic paints?
      Thanks!

    • @repletereplete8002
      @repletereplete8002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      it's got some scratch resistance, and resists abrasion and good uv proof. I know it takes at least a day to full cure but I'm using it to create art with, not as a coating so that would really depend on the surface, and thickness of layers. Adam used a lot in one go, so probably best to layer it up. Also it's near mirror reflective so a finger would leave a grease mark on it. Not used a clear coat with it so that's something you'd have to test. In theory you should be able to do it but would require a bit of experimenting to find the best one that doesn't react with the paint. It's an alcohol based paint btw.

      I was going to comment the exact same thing! I've been using these brands for years and I would swear by them any day. The only time I've had any sort of issue with a Montana or Molotow product was when I painted parts of the grille on my car with some cheapo plastic paint and then coated it with a Montana matte clear coat - it didn't quite hold up to the abuse on Swedish backroads. Then again that's very much not what it's made for so it doesn't really matter. Great stuff!

    Should have masked the cross guard and the pommel and painted the blade and then applied the gold leaf last!

    • @Apostate_ofmind
      @Apostate_ofmind 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is what i tought too. Its probably because its not a high quality build where it really matters. It came out fine in the end anyway. Oh maybe was to avoid the gold leaf to stick to the still sticky chrome paint while it cures.

    • @almagill
      @almagill 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remember how he said "the gold leaf will stick to anything sticky" (or words to that effect..) The chrome paint can take up to 72 hours to cure and even then still has a little bit of 'tack' to it.
      His sequence of operations allowed for that and the fact he was doing this, as it traditional, in the last hours before heading off to the Con.
      Just thinking...unwrapping that sword after the journey might be a bit interesting. Hope he packed a touch up kit..

    • @allluckyseven
      @allluckyseven 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking, if metallic gold paper is just silver with some yellow cellophane or something similar on top, what if he painted the crossguard/pommel with that same Molotow chrome and then overlayed it with a transparent yellow paint?
      Sure that would need to be tested separately first...

    The stupid thing about this sword is that it's a longsword. Arthur's story is supposed to be set in the 5th or 6th century and longswords weren't a thing until the late 13th century. But that's typical of tv and movies I guess...
    Great work though Adam. ;)

    • @chartle1
      @chartle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He also shouldn't be wearing full plate armor. Thats a major goof of the movie.

    • @Varadiio
      @Varadiio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure I'd call this particular one a longsword. It seems to be on the larger end of arming swords, but a longsword is a two-handed weapon. Fiction like Dungeons and Dragons have confused them with arming swords, if we're going to nitpick historical accuracy. Arming swords certainly did exist by the 5th or 6th century. As far as King Arthur's tale, it has rarely been depicted with period-authentic anything, no matter what time they writers decide upon. Even fiction from millenia ago struggled to place their characters in the correct gear.

    • @jakx2ob
      @jakx2ob 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vara Diio it's a not that trivial subject. The german Wikipedia actually has two articles about longswords one called *Langes Schwert* which talks about the two handed sword from the 13th century and than there is the article *Langschwert* which describes a larger variety of types of swords which are about a meter+ long. This page also includes a aword type called *Spatha* which was used by romans from 1st b.c. -6th century and is probably the class of sword which excalibur belongs to.

    • @chartle1
      @chartle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I doubt the real sword would be as Adam says that chromey. Maybe something closer to gun metal gray. But since he cos playing a film character in a film that I recall were all the armor and swords were super chromey it works.

    If I remember correctly from my readings on gilding, it was often done with a very thinned out hide glue that was brushed on, wiped off and then allowed to become tacky prior to applying the leaf. The leaf is handled by lifting the sheet of paper over the workpiece and sliding the leaf carefully off the sheet. This is less important for objects which have multiple compound curves and won't be able to be buffed. You can also find some recommendations to apply more than one layer of leaf so that small scuffs don't immediately wear through all of the gold. Then, if a more burnished appearance is desired, after the hide glue has dried, the piece can be burnished with a fine shellac similar to French polished wood.

    FWIW, I find that an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner type thing works really well for cleaning airbrush parts. Depending on the solvent you need for the paint you've used, it might not be too kind on the O-rings, but it generally makes a really good job of cleaning the fiddly bits.
