truly amazing songwriting at its peak it is so complex yet so simple townes was the real mccoy . that line, " but your softest whisper's louder than the highways call to me" just gets me
I used to ride freight trains and hitchhike and do dead tour live in the forest all over this country. Now I have a four year old daughter. Her mom and I aren’t together and I sometimes get such an intense longing to go hit the road and this song encapsulates so incredibly the bittersweet feeling I get. It resonates with me more then any other I’ve ever heard. Rest in power Townes, you were without equal.
I hitchhiked and busked on the streets and work ski resorts etc thru all my twenties and slowed in my 30’s. Had my first born 5 months ago and my ex broke up with me while pregnant after we decided to ‘keep it’. And I feel both thr e shackles of following her around for the next May years to be with my son and also the beautiful journey of staying up and developing a solid relationship with him. It’s a no brainer to sacrifice wanderlust for a relationship with my son. SOO, we gotta get trips in every once in a while though, to feed that part of us, we can have both, just not the same as the past; which is something we can never have anyway. Much Love and I hope you’re child is healthy and happy thru the years!!
Musicians, those of us who feed ourselves with our craft, generally speaking, are always longing to be home with our families. But the sad facts are that you have to hit the road to make your paper, you know? Wanderlust? Okay…I get it. I do. But home with your loves, being a father, one that sticks through the tough shit no matter the weather, that is what I believe we long for, once we grow up. The sadness you hear in Townes, is because he never did feel right at home - and the pang of regret is motherfucker. Townes was so loveable to me anyway. I never knew him, but just from his footage on heartworn highways, and hearing kris kristofferson and willie Nelson and the others talk about him, he was a sad and beautifully complicated individual, perhaps not long for a world like this that eats people up who are all heart and beautiful soul.
No song has ever capitulated my 26 years on earth more. The absolutely mind tinging urge to get out there and the hopes for something more out of life in general, kinda feeling that tears at you in the morning hours. There’s a girl that loves me more than I can understand and around her there is no worry, yet I will always crave more. Hoping i find my way by 30.
Over the years I have listened a lot to the album "Townes Van Zandt" that features this song but I was so addicted to "Waitin' Around to Die" that I didn't give the other songs enough attention. But on a roadtrip recently this song hit me hard and now I love it endlessly along with "(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria". Two of the most beautiful, touching love songs ever written. They put me in a very emotional state. I wish I could have seen Townes perform this, it would've moved me to tears for sure. Glad I can watch this video at least ❤
if you guys havent seen heartworn highways you should check it out. It shows townes' backyard and he shows the camera some "rabbit holes" and he actually falls in one and drags himself all the way in it, knocking his cowboy hat off. he seems very happy(drunk) in that vid, excellent footage of guy clark and steve young as well. Townes is the man
My first crush was John Denver, my wedding song was John Prine's In Spite of Ourselves, grew up with Johnny Cash and my new beau introduced me to Townes....yeah....that would be something!!
Music isn't a competition. Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan are both great musicians, but there is absolutely absolutely no sense comparing anyone to anyone else. You like it or you don't, period.
Alcohol, which is the most dangerous withdrawal along with benzodiazepines. Only two deadly withdrawals. Seizures... A lot of shit. Read about delirium tremens.
The same thing happened to a sweet lady called Debbie at 58 years old. The whole town misses her and we have nobody to look after our dogs when we go away. RIP Townes RIP Debbie.
Well, don’t come whining to us about YOUR short comings. We gotta nuff problems of our own. The arrogant nerve. Waltzin in here demanding answers and blaming others for your embarrassing lack of self awareness. Tsk, tsk, tsk! Your Momma must be so proud. Smh.
@@maskandvaccinefreeandproud2110 What a puerile response.Maybe take your medicine to calm down?I don't know about your title, but you seem like some right wing opinionated hick from the 19th Century. It seems incongruous how someone like you can call themselves a Christian with your odious opinions. And I note you deliberately call yourself "white",which suggests a racist to boot.I came here to listen to TVZ who would have detested your moralistic BS.Why are you here ???
I love how the strength of these songs let him tour around for twenty years. Better than bob dylan? maybe the closet person ever to come close. Leonard cohen it totally over-rated
One of my all-time favorites.. Townes was phantastic!
Wow, a Holliday inn in Houston had the privilege to have this man play… born to late to have guys like this make “music”.
truly amazing songwriting at its peak it is so complex yet so simple townes was the real mccoy . that line, " but your softest whisper's louder than the highways call to me" just gets me
a song you don't want to end.
Pat Bruce Best fucking way to describe it. Oh my gosh. It's perfect. It's so true.
Thanks man, you made my year. :)
Pat Bruce Well I'm glad I could do that!! You deserve to have years made, homie!! Hope they keep being good to ya!! :) Thank you for living!! :)
Wow, what an incredibly perfect way to describe how I feel when I listen to this song
Yes, just like everybody else already answered... Perfect way to describe the way this song makes you feel...

You’ll regret this time with your little one man. It goes so quick and then their off doin their own thing. You got 12-14 yrs at best. Trust me.
Stick to your kid dude

Just Townes, his guitar, and his poetry, that’s all I need. RIP legend
Amen to that. He's got me through a lot along the road.
I like what you hear him say at the end. "I am glad that I remembered that one."
Right
“Your softest whisper’s louder than the highway’s call to me...” beautiful!
I cried a lot when I heard this song first time on June 24, 2018.
I almost cried hearing this one today
I cried when I read your comment. Because I don’t care so much. Lol
It's like it finds you when you need it. Fuck I'm crying too freind
Townes breaks my heart.
his eyes and closed the entire time, I'm so in love with this recording.
thats how he always plays
My father is the same way. The bass becomes an extension of his body, he plays with his eyes closed. He says it connects him to the music better.
To have even half the talent that Townes had would be an incredible gift that few humans posses
I possess it. I frikkin rock man! Lol
We see him playing guitar…but he’s in a completely different world. You can tell each word is a stab to the heart.

there is truly something in the water in Texas that has given us all these great legends
I think it's glyphosate.

If you haven't already Delta Momma Blues is an excellen album to leave playing on repeat
Lungs is my favorite, Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold is great too
An absolutely incredible poet. Such great songs like no other’s.
What a songwriter, such a tragic life.
Awesome picker too.
You’re missed John.
My favorite of all of Townes' beautiful songs....he was magic xoxo
I so love my Townes without all kinds of sugary strings slopped all over the purest songwriting ever. Thanks so much for "A Private Concert".
One of the artists I truly regret never having met or seen live. But he left a group of great tunes. 🙏🏼🎶
A truly wonderful song by an American classic who died far too young!
“Thanks, y’all. I’m glad I remembered that one.”
One of the best songwriters ever. He wrote so great songs. But there are just 45 thousand people who watched this video. so sad.
I am responsible for at least 100 of those viewings..
@@michaelfriese431 I’m responsible for 101.
Townes, I sure wish that you'd stayed here a bit longer. See you on the other side.
Memories of the Old Quarter, Houston, back in the day. We didn’t know what we had or how fast it would pass.
so many great TVZ songs: this is a particular favourite. Sheer poetry

This song will always make me think of you. I love you Emily

Simply phantastic!
Love this song..... thanks for putting it on the net
Eases my soul .
Can you imagine Townes, prine and Denver and cash all playing together at the pearly gates on Saturday’s call it gods quad John heavenly band

Great comment, I wish more people would realize that!
Thank you. Just, thank you!
Thanks Hank
Forever in my heart. Real feelings❤
Happy new year.
And on the 7th day God rested my ass! He was busy planning on making the greatest songwriter ever!
So genius person, sad he had to play in private concerts
Unbelievable. Pure fucking genius.
Thank you for posting this, lapislazuli42.
Great 🎉🎉🎉
PRICELESS, guyz
Simply so sad but true
My song !
Oh, why oh why, did we loose him that early?!

Why, oh why, oh why do people consistently misspell lose on social media sites so often?!

To the Rag n Bone man cover🚬🎸
This song could use about twenty more versus.
@jonterhaar where can you order the dvd?
Beautiful doesn't cover it.💔
Some folks say Daniel Johnston wrote touching songs..it may be true but nothing compares to Townes..not even Hank Williams
8 dislikes? come fight me
nothing as real
i mean i feel what yall are saying. but yeah i think he's happy to be playing, townes' personality is pretty monotone/dry anyways.
I love how the strength of these songs let him tour around for twenty years. Better than bob dylan? maybe the closet person ever to come close. Leonard cohen it totally over-rated
damn..... poor guy looks horrible :(...... I love TVZ music, but drug addiction is a horrible.............
Much respect to Townes, but I believe Don Williams sang this song better
Townes don’t care what you think
No one sings Townes’ songs better than him
