This WAS very interesting because everyone is just talking about the basics while MatPat literally read and entire legal document to see what’s going on. @@TheThorbob380 This plan is so well thought-out by Epic that I feel there's no unsuccessful outcome. Even then, I'm 100% sure they've already thought "what if we lose?"
Epic's intentional breaking of the terms of service was a very deliberate move to force Apple's hand - being removed from the App Store gave Epic the perfect publicity platform to start this whole thing. I wouldn't think for a second that there's something they didn't think through. Remember, 60-something page legal documents don't appear out of thin air - they take a team of lawyers a solid few weeks... Epic had the document ready to go because they knew how Apple would respond to the price change. Also, I'll agree with what Pandize said that there really isn't such a thing as unsuccessful outcome for Epic. Worst case scenario: they lose the lawsuit, and Fortnite users jump ship from Apple devices in favour of Android where they can still sideload the game, meaning Epic still wins in the public eye (which is the important part). Best case scenario: Epic wins the lawsuit, and they get what they want. There really isn't a 'lose' scenario for them.

I would love to see more of this! People keep talking about these huge tech giants, but they (Epic Games) will become their own tech giant. Repeating what Apple already did. All until another small popular game down into the future. I am always reminded that history always repeats itself. This is no difference. In summary, YES! MatPat I would be on board with this idea! Lore is great and all but History is where you can be a part of.
I would certainly be interested in hearing more about the company behind Epic! I hope you see this MatPat! and are ready to read a small essay :) That being said, one point that I think was kind of glossed over was security. One of the biggest reasons our app store based world exists is because of Apple's walled garden approach on the Mac lineup. It worked so well to keep desktop and laptop devices protected (compared to windows xp and before) that it was a no-brainer to integrate that same design into their mobile devices. When Google started shipping the android platform, the success and security of Apple AppStore was blatantly evident! They had no choice but to build a similar system to protect their users most valuable, and mobile, data. To this day, that is still a reason to avoid side loading APKs. If you're technically inclined and know what your doing, it isn't any more dangerous than installing a program on your computer. But for most mobile phone users, opening your phone to side loading can allow dangerous applications, especially shady app store, to install and sometimes modify what they please. While I understand and agree with the vast majority of your points and arguments, I think both Google and Apple have a responsibility to protect their users, the user's operating system, and the user's intellectual property. I trust and use the Epic Games Store on my computer, but blessing one company to create and host its own app store could start a trend, resulting in less reputable, and generous, companies designing their own offerings. Competition is good! But confusion, especially in technology, causes problems and misinformation. Strictly from a security standpoint, I think Google and Apple should fight to retain control of the only application that installs and allows code to run on their operating systems. If that is changed, I would be willing to bet we would see an influx of malicious code and nasty spyware into a device that is inherently more personal than any computing device in the past.
Kind of like how Monopoly released Ms. Monopoly, even tho the creator of the game (a guy) stole the idea from a woman (Lizzie Magie’s The Landlord's Game), never credited her and then bought her out years later after Monopoly had become more financially successful
This would be an awesome series. I love learning about how companies work and I would love having it be as digestible as this. Please make a bunch more !
Fun fact. Monopolies are legal if they don't raise prices to "unfair" amounts. That's how it's legal for amazon to basically have a monopoly on online shopping.
@@deadgamesdeadman but in the case of ebay it is a more open store where everyone can sell, is like a flea market while amazon is like a deparment store
Except for the fact that people can sign up as a business and sell products on Amazon, including used products. It isn’t as easy as eBay, but it is there.
@@Cyberspark939 except its not really but ok.... For example Steam charges 20-30%, GOG actually recodes old games to work on modern PC's. Gamestop is literally retail and its a totally different business model. Humble Bundle only takes 15% for their store, Discord store is 10%, Itch.io is whatever the dev sets. Mac OS only charges 3%. It is an arbitrary number that only consoles truly deserve.
Really nice new take on Game Theory! Probably the most interesting episode yet albeit perhaps not as "fun" as the other crazy game theories. Would love for you to continue this series and make more similar content if you stumble upon something interesting within the gaming industry.
most of it is just propaganda, even the part about turning down OnePlus because effectively the devices would have to be completely reprogrammed so that a second app store could not bypass the security restrictions of the first. As an example, if steam could bypass microsoft's store or Epic's store, all H would break loose...but the platform does not have that problem because it was not designed around a central store. It's really expensive to host so many apps. Epic even decided to charge people more...for charging people less XD
Please do a part 2. As much as I enjoy Fnaf and other games lore discussions, it's really interesting to know something that's going on in the real world righr now. And I feel like a lot could be learned by studying the business practice of epic games. So thank you for this video and please do make a part 2.
This is the first Game Theory episode I've watched in a while. I've missed these business scheme exposing episodes. Ever since the Spiderman one, there haven't been any. Also we are waiting for Fall Guys.
You fall for the bait, now epig will now proceed to monopolize the gaming industry, both pc and mobile, because of spineless sheeps like you. You want free games, and now you support the vile practices epig has been doing for the past years since fortnite. You will suffer in the end but you can still change your fate if you boycott everything epig does.
Alfred Ong dude I don’t think you know what a monopoly is or what Epic is trying to do. Stop attacking people when you have no clue what you are talking about
@@alirohani2687 Unfortunate when people for years still cannot figure out what epig is really doing and still think what epig is doing serves the consumer. This is why our gaming industry is doomed and its up to us the resistance to continue emphasizing and spreading every vile thing epig is doing. You can still change your gaming future. Wake up.
@@alirohani2687 Neither do the game theorists based on this video. Numerous time, courts have upheld that a monopoly cannot be defined as a company's own marketplace. Otherwise walmart, game exchange, your local mom-and-pop grocery store, or even epic games themselves could be sued for not allowing other people to sell whatever they want at their stores/on their digital storefronts. Try watching the Hoeg Law youtube channel if you want more information on what's going on with this case rather than a hoy take that doesn't have much of a, if any, legal foundation on the matter.

as a business studies graduate from havard the definition of monpoly is , real-estate for two to eight players, in which the player's goal is to remain financially solvent while forcing opponents into bankruptcy by buying and developing pieces of property
RupluttajaGames It IS a monopoly. Let’s say you get the iPhone by your parents, without knowing the restrictions of Apple, then realize how much freedom Android has. Asking your parents to change to another phone won’t work, because you already have that one, and it’s not free. Your argument it’s really too dumb. Let’s put it this way. You change of country to another one, without realizing they live in a dictatorship. Now, you are trapped there, because it isn’t free to go back to your past country. Just because you have freedom in other countries, doesn’t mean it’s fine that this country rules a dictatorship. Now change countries to the devices, dictatorship to monopolization. Now, changing the words of your argument: “Who forced you to go to *dictatorial country* ? Pretty sure you had plenty of other options. => Not a dictatorship”. As simple as that, your argument sounds completely dumb.
@@Flotube444 Jim Sterling's take away sucked though. It was basically all companies bad. It doesn't consider the amount of competition Epic's case will encourage.
Makes sense and I'm with Epic on this. Also I'm curious if their app store would have the same guidelines as their game store would have, that 12% drops to 5% when the game is developed with the Unreal Engine. I hope you see this MatPat! and are ready to read a small essay :)
That being said, one point that I think was kind of glossed over was security.
I hope that Matt Sees this it’s top like rn so I hope so

Except 30% is the same across all game stores. Steam, GoG, Playstation Store, Gamestop. This is nothing new.
thats is self a calculated business
@@Cyberspark939 except its not really but ok....
For example Steam charges 20-30%, GOG actually recodes old games to work on modern PC's. Gamestop is literally retail and its a totally different business model. Humble Bundle only takes 15% for their store, Discord store is 10%, Itch.io is whatever the dev sets. Mac OS only charges 3%.
It is an arbitrary number that only consoles truly deserve.

most of it is just propaganda, even the part about turning down OnePlus because effectively the devices would have to be completely reprogrammed so that a second app store could not bypass the security restrictions of the first. As an example, if steam could bypass microsoft's store or Epic's store, all H would break loose...but the platform does not have that problem because it was not designed around a central store. It's really expensive to host so many apps. Epic even decided to charge people more...for charging people less XD
I hate epic but this is just amazing
Please do a part 2. As much as I enjoy Fnaf and other games lore discussions, it's really interesting to know something that's going on in the real world righr now. You want free games, and now you support the vile practices epig has been doing for the past years since fortnite.
You will suffer in the end but you can still change your fate if you boycott everything epig does.

Wake up.
@@alfredong6850 it's called epic btw not epig
@@alirohani2687 Neither do the game theorists based on this video. Numerous time, courts have upheld that a monopoly cannot be defined as a company's own marketplace. Otherwise walmart, game exchange, your local mom-and-pop grocery store, or even epic games themselves could be sued for not allowing other people to sell whatever they want at their stores/on their digital storefronts. as a business studies graduate from havard the definition of monpoly is

When epic reveals your being monopolized: *perhaps i treated you to harshly*
Who forced you to buy iPhone? Pretty sure you had plenty of other options. => Not a monopoly.
I thought this was a very interesting video since i haven't seen anyone else talk about this. Would love to see more

Makes sense and I'm with Epic on this. Also I'm curious if their app store would have the same guidelines as their game store would have, that 12% drops to 5% when the game is developed with the Unreal Engine. So would apps developed using Unreal be subject to the 12%. I'm glad Epic has been doing everything they can to take a chunk out of these other monopolies.
