WHY MUST THEY TURN EVERYTHING INTO A MOVIE?! I remember going to our local theatre (my music teacher made it into a fun field trip) when I was in school and seeing the STAGE version of this AND FELL INSTANTLY IN LOVE…..
Saw Cats in Detroit back in 2010 for our first wedding Anniversary. I was pregnant with my first daughter (now almost 10). I remember her enjoying the music as much as I did! Bought this version on dvd soon after and we all enjoy it as a family still! ❤️
This brings me back to when my little sister and I did our own mini play of 'Cats' for our family. We watched it so many times I'm surprised we didn't wear out the VHS tape.
I live on the same grounds as a no kill animal shelter. I also work for them as the lead filmmaker and the author of most of the articles in the yearly magazine, and I have theater experience. I would prefect for this as I know how cats move.
This vhs version of cats will always be my favorite I remember burning the tape out!! I saw cats right before the show ended on Broadway in 2000 when I was 7 years old
I have just convinced my fiance that our bridal party popping up like each of the cats do at the beginning would be so cute when they are introduced at the reception. Now time to convince my bridal party.
I did hear about a Cats themed wedding. They asked their guests to wear cat ears, it sounded really cute. It was longer ago than this post though so hey, you would not be the first to do it!
Saw this live on tour in 1998, my mom and grandma weren't fans, but this is what introduced me to ALW. I will always love this show, moreso for the dancing (as a dancer), but of course for the music as well. This absolutely trumps the shite that is 2019s version.
Ok, I need to know - is it or is it not Elaine Paige singing the line “When you’re walking alone?” (And please no comments on how she also plays Grizabella in this, I already know and that was not what I asked.)
I'm pretty sure this song is a flashback in the play. That is Grizabella before she left the tribe. That explains why Rum Tum Tugger doesn't have his full coat yet and Old Deuteronomy looks much less fluffy too.
When I saw them perform at the queen Elizabeth theatre in Vancouver, they hid in the audience until the curtain rose then took the whole audience by surprise
Cats has always been a guilty pleasure for me. Whenever people ask me how can you like it? There’s nothing going on… I’m like… yes.. there is nothing going on… in fact there is so much nothing going on that you start to notice things…
The problem with cats is it takes a bit of getting used to the absurdity in order to like it, and people just don't want to put in that effort *because they think it's absurd.* It's a bit of a *cat*ch 22.
Watching this, I'm wondering something about the film: could fixing the uncanny valley effect have been as simple as given them the show's face painting or the CGI equivalent?
MIght have helped a bit but they´ll still have the janky animation and lighting/shadow issues. A lot of THAT simply is down to not enough post production time. The problem with the face paint however would be that then the complete cat design of the film doesn´t make sense anymore. I think they went purposefully for a more naturalistic, less exaggerated vibe in the film. But should have kept more of garish design looks and music, close to the strage show.
I auditioned for this at a community theater but I had absolutely no idea how intense the audition process was.. needless to say i didn’t get the audition probably for the best
I was today years old when I just found out the 1998 version is actually from 1988… I thought it was a remastered version from the past past… mind you I’ve been watching this film since I was a baby and I’ve it live as well.. I watch at least once a month.. I am so mind blown. 😂😂😂
I was hesitant to watch this til I was about 19/20 years old; I didn’t expect to like it. But this opening number just hits it out of the park! I was hooked.
I assigned my most of my friends a cat from cats the musical. The two rambunctiously mad ones are Mungojerri and Rumpleteazer, the one with what looks like a mane and is basically the rpg powerhouse of the group but extremely chaotic and quiet is Macavity, and I am Mr. Mistoffelees because I love him and would definitely be a mage type character who is shy and definitely gay
I can't count how many times I've watched the CATS video but here I am again :D one thing I'm absolutely loving is all the comments discovering a particular performer or voice for the first time!
Which number from Cats would you LOVE to see on the channel?
Gus the Theatre Cat
Macavity the mystery cat
Victoria solo ballet.
Magical mister mistoffles

This is how it should be done! Thanks for this. I just wish the film didn't exist as it isn't a true representation of the true art of the show. The show is just incredible.
I know. The stage musical Cats is my favourite musical. It's amazing seeing it live with these giant cats roaming around. You totally forget they're people dressed up. Now I'm afraid the film will hurt the stage show. The make-up is just so brilliant. I don't know what they were thinking going for human faces in the movie. And the way the songs were done just sucked all the fun and life out of it (with the exception of the Railway Cat.)
In my mind, this is the ONLY Cats movie

🤦🏽
They massacred Jennyanydots.....
@@egobang0716 Indeed…
@@egobang0716 It's even sadder when you notice Rebel (and James Cordon as well to a point) have moments where they show they do know what character they're supposed to be playing, and want to be playing, but they were unfortunately hired to be caricatures of themselves and not to actually act the part. You can see moments of Jenny shine through, before she's forced into doing another lol fat joke moment.
What I would give to have seen this cast live...
To be fair, this cast doesn't exist outside of the movie - some actors (Elaine Paige, Susan Jane Tanner, Ken Page, Michael Gruber, Sir John Mills) were brought on specifically for this, and most of the actors played different roles in the running productions at the time. (Doesn't stop us from wishing, though!)

During the choir part he’s standing next to Munkustrap (not sure on spelling)

its cool how their choir actually sounds like cats howling
Saw Cats in Detroit back in 2010 for our first wedding Anniversary. I was pregnant with my first daughter (now almost 10). I remember her enjoying the music as much as I did! Bought this version on dvd soon after and we all enjoy it as a family still! ❤️

Ok, I need to know - is it or is it not Elaine Paige singing the line “When you’re walking alone?”
(And please no comments on how she also plays Grizabella in this, I already know and that was not what I asked.)
Yes, see my comment !
I'm pretty sure this song is a flashback in the play. That is Grizabella before she left the tribe. That explains why Rum Tum Tugger doesn't have his full coat yet and Old Deuteronomy looks much less fluffy too.

Idk why but my friends always get annoyed when I sing Cats ITS THE BEST MUSICAL EVER HOW CAN SOMEONE NOT LIKE IT
The problem with cats is it takes a bit of getting used to the absurdity in order to like it, and people just don't want to put in that effort *because they think it's absurd.*
It's a bit of a *cat*ch 22.
such a good show!
Who knew a concept as strange as people in costumes reciting poems about cats in a musical form could have worked so well?
This one has grown on me massively, from "oh yeah it's quite OK" to my second favorite number after Skimbleshanks.
