I arrived with not much 6 years ago with no degrees and not much money, I am still hustling, but still there. th-cam.com/video/55MGkn9noyk/w-d-xo.html
i moved to Thailand in 2022 after visiting multiple times from 2001 onwards. I'd always planned to retire here but realised that that would mean living here only once I was old. I spoke to the company I worked for at the time and asked them if I could work from Thailand for 6 weeks, they agreed, this was then extended to 10 weeks, whilst I was here I found a remote from anywhere role (I work in tech), flew back to London, handed in my notice, then moved back just over 4 weeks later. Now married with a little one on the way and it feels like the best decision I ever made
When I was 19-23 years old I would do it without thinking twice. Now at 47 I want to have that non-fear again.
I decided to retire, and tried to at age 50. I took me 2 years to work out some financial details, and at 52 I moved to Thailand permanently.
You are well suited to it kreg, having met you of course!
Dito !
Great perspective. We made the leap of faith and left US for Laos in early 2023. Best decision we ever made. “Semi-retirement” is a great way to define living and continuing to build options into your life. We came with some savings, passive income, and a path to hit pension kick-in down the road. Best advice I would give is don’t wait until it’s too late to enjoy life.
Sounds like you guys really cracked it, congratulations!
Caution - when talking about Retirement to a Country that has no Retirement Financial agreements with your own just be sure that your Monthly income netto will A. Satisfy that countries minimum required Income with some room on top as the requirement will always rise over time and your income not necessarily. B. That income will allow you to invest in adequate Health Insurance that covers emergencies, hospitalization and treatment of life threating diseases. Once you've nailed both of them you should be able to relax and just live at a level you can afford.
invest in medical insurance ? better to invest in a charcoal stove it is much cheaper and less painful 😂
I (39y) work 6 months in the West and make my money there (self employed) and live 6 months in Thailand without any worries about money. We live a frugal life and enjoy life without much spending. Having a decent Thai lady that prefer a simple life is a must to be able to reach this.
I retired after my divorce for 2 years and got bored. Only traveling around also gets boring after a while. Once i visited Thailand i figured out pretty fast that this will be my "home".
Thanks For Creating And Sharing
Thanks for watching
Im 38 and manage to live out here for most of the year. I work in Europe through summer (as a tour driver in the music industry) then spend at least 7 months every year in Thailand with my feet up. Its a great life and giving up my home in England 4 years ago was the best decision I ever made!
This is another great way to do it!
Great video. So what do you put on your CV to keep it fresh?
But what sort of visa at age 38 do you get, to be able to spend 7 months a year in Thailand ?
@@Wilko11 visa on arrival 30 days then a wknd in vietnam/cambodia/laos come back have another 30 days then do a visa extension get another 30 days...theres many ways 2 stay here 4 months as long as you dnt take the piss...i also spend alot of time in vietnam so its not 7 months straight in Thailand...Hanoi in N. Vietnam is alot cooler and its nice 2 take a break from the heat
@@chrisg2759 Cheers, sounds like a good way to do it. I no longer work so was considering the 5 year Elite visa, but it's a big financial commitment and you'd have to spend most of the 5 years living there to get any value out of the visa. 👍
Great vlog… yep the secret of a good retirement is to Lee yourself busy, no matter what it is, hobby’s , working part time, whatever is your thing. Working in a barbershop, I meet a lot of people who retire and the ones that are happiest are the ones that are busy doing what they enjoy
Thanks for your insights Ryan. It is so easy to allow fear to keep us locked into familiar patterns that no longer serve us. I love what you’ve been able to do for you and your family. Truly inspirational!
Quite right my friend, this is all midset
Great vlog Ryan as always, love watching and listening to your thoughts and insights to your life in rural Thailand.
Best wishes to you and your family.
.. exactly what I needed to be told! Thank you Ryan! For the times they are a-changin' 💙
Always interesting and informative and entertaining
Thanks Michael!
i find your channel very inspiring ( i love our northern accents)i have arthritis and suffer in the uk cold so often travel to the sun I visited thailand 30 years ago after a year working holiday is Oz after they closed the coal mines. I lived and worked in southern spain for 12 years until my kidneys failed and was so much more healthy in the heat. now having had a transplant im able to travel again and we are planning to come over at the end of the month just getting some health stuff sorted.I am hoping the climate suits me and will definatley travel to the north, your lifestyle is just what im looking for..At 61 and not worked for years I still like to build cars and always have projects on the go just hampered with the weather and the cold. carry on making these inspiring videos after divorces deaths health issues i belive you should live a real life like you are doing, good luck mate keep it up Dave
Thank you for the feedback and show of support Dave appreciate it and respect for not giving up under such difficult circumstances
Some interesting points there Ryan. Thanks for that
Thanks matt, hope you are well!
@@thenakedguru I am. Thanks very much
Looks a smashing trail for a run!
Good advice Ryan. The voice of experience.
Thank you
Great advice Ryan. You and your beautiful family give me a little peace when I watch you. I want to do something similar to what you’re doing but need about two or three years to build my capital back up after getting ripped off by family. Thailand just has an attitude about life that fits me more than the pointless aggression I’ve dealt with living in big American cities. My brother lived in Phuket to train for about six months and has never stopped talking about it since. A beautiful place with kind hearted people. Wish I could move today
Cheers Charlie, and wishing you all the best with your move, sounds like you have a plan!
You give me a lot of things to think about, to come to Thailand permanent! 🙏
😍Beautiful sunset. Hopefully I will be able to stay couple of months in Thailand during our winter.💞💞💞💞
That would be lovely Wendy
Something to 🤔about you got your points of view👍🏻🙏🏻🇹🇭
Damo/Ryan, what is the name of the purple flower vines to the left of your kitchen? Thanks 🙏
thank you
Good job Rossi.😊
Gday Ryan, yeh Thailand is a developing country with lots of opportunities for everyone
Sounds like you are getting it. Thanks for the inspiration. It is not how much work you are doing as much as enjoying that work.
Keep it up mate. Always moving forward carving your own path. #notthecommonman
Good discussion..
I'm in my early 50's and retired here almost two years ago (the minute the boarders opened in W.A in Australia).... It did take courage being younger and a single female but without stepping out of our comfort zone - there is no growth❤.... I'll miss the more frequent vlogs but are happy for you guys that you have identified that this is whats right for you and your family atm😍. Thankyou guys🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Tammy! And kudos to you for taking the leap - I always say I’ll
Limit content and then stuff happens and I end up releasing more 😂🙏❤️
😂😂😂🙏❤️
Hi, I think you are talking about a change of life rather than retirement. Having been in IT for many years, I wanted to reduce stress so looked for a different role and life that less income could cope with.
Would love to live in thailand. Been married to a thai for 8 years, we live in UK. Im not old enough to retire at 32 but always thought about starting a business in thailand. Maybe a moo kata restaurant or something
ครอบครัวอบอุ่นมากครับน้อง
Great topic Ryan....
My story, worked my whole life in California. I retired as a computer engineer and have great pension/savings with medical coverage. I've been married to a Thai lady for 6 years and still live in California. But we're looking to buy a home and live in Thailand part time. Wife likes to work here and my step daughter came from Thailand to go to college. We live very comfortably now and I look forward to spend more time there. I'm healthy and love life. Keep up your videos 🤟
Thanks Steven 🙏
Most mid 60s men are still ok
I’m 63 I can assure readers the pension in Rural Thailand is sufficient- I planned so have the house , land etc partner
Health is key
Have a few investments
But in all seriousness
If you have 50,000 baht a month
Even 40,000 the country side is fine
It’s actually easy
I live there on what will be my pension equivalent
But work high season tug driver in west
I’ve four years to go
The bottom line is discard fears
Travel be happy
Make sure health insurance is good
I’m trying to get there full time!!
Keep on it my friend, you can do it!
har ..sounds like bo carter... all around man ...with some... fast life blues... thrown in.. at the end ..not bad...
Gave up on uk 🇬🇧 in March 23 moved to bkk due to meeting my gf the year before. So far no regrets. I do miss the weather seasons of the uk 🇬🇧though. Money wise , yes could have worked on a bit more to get some more savings behind me , I’m 59 , coping well really and would not like the thought of going back to uk. May move to the country for a quieter and cheaper life , best wishes to you & family for 2024 ..

Hi Ryan...what recruitment sites do you use?
Alot of offers come directly from the hotels, linked-in and hosco :)
Coccidiosis likely about the silkies...apple cider vinegar in the water helps.
will look into that Anthony thanks
@2:12 Ryan!
Honest opinion, would $20k USD per year be enough to live comfortably?
Not going out and partying all the time, but also not just being locked inside everyday.
Just living normally, maybe go out to eat one meal per day and cook the rest at home. Maybe go out for a coffee in the morning after going to the gym
Of course it would be ;-)
I'm retiring at 62, this is 22 more paychecks (those are months). I'm going to Laos to avoid Thailand's red tape harassment, uncertainty and higher cost of living. I've taught myself the basic Lao language and am now learning to read and write it as well, this of course will be on going, hell I still don't speak proper English... 😉
Sounds like you have a solid plan though brother, and i always say that Loas is what Thailand was 30 years ago which has a lot of benefits to it!
My thinking exactly...@@thenakedguru
Not good idea to live in Laos.
Why do you say that?@@emma-fo7oz
Issan Thailand I would say is better Then Laos just over The river
I was going to wait until I was 40 to move back to Thailand but at 36, office work is already beginning to take its toll on me. Back pains, weight gain. The wife, the kid and me have decided we are selling our house in UK and can't wait to get back to Thailand. Although we already wanted this before I discovered your channel. I would say your videos have been instrumental in accelerating that process, so thank you. I don't regard the move as retirement but between home schooling and running a small farm, I don't expect to have an enormous amount of free time for other businesses. But I don't recommend anyone to move to Thailand with a plan to relax and sip cocktails in a hammock all day. That life will be unfulfilling and will lead to all kinds of vice.
thanks and appreciate the comment
Are Thai Chicken chicks / Ducks ... Fowls vaccinated before you purchased them ? Are you aware there is feed for chicks that gives them good start to be healthy. Vitamins in the 🚰 Good Luck with your flocks
I personally think generally people shouldn’t ever plan to retire per se. I think people should plan to retire from corporate life asap where humans have been relegated to units of productivity that is to be bled dry which is very unhealthy. Get out of that asap, but have side hustles / jobs that are not particularly arduous to keep you going, active and your mind ticking. So many people in the west go from one extreme to another, where they are in corporate life for too long and when they finally retire they have nothing left in terms of health or desire to do other stuff, and it’s not healthy
I agree 👍🙏
I got obligations to my family still where I live so it suits me well to wait some more :) and I am pretty much 100% I will be well off when my obligations ends.
best of luck with it, sounds like you have a plan!
@@thenakedguru Thank you, yeah it is very similar to yours.
Sensible philosophy and advice.
Ain't that some true wisdom right there! "Guru" indeed! Great life quality you guy's have established for yourselves! I can Imagine, though, that when you "make the jump" as early as you guys have, that luring question "are we missing out, stuck here in the middle of nowhere" repeatedly hounts you, and you get tempted from time to time to, perhaps, go back to your past life style? But, I can also imagine, that, when that [miss placed] initial "panic" settles, you [again... and again] arrive at that, actually, you are living your dream in that "Ark" of yours? Because, the way I see it, the biggest mistake you could do is to get lured back to "corporate" and throw away all that wonderful stuff that you have built up! BUT, as you, wisely, say: For us that haven't - YET - made the "jump": an even bigger mistake would be to postpone it to far, and risk that it might either never happen, or it will be sub optimal due to age and health issues... Personally, it has been part of the "master plan" for a very long time, and we (me and my Thai wife) have kind of been living with one leg in Thailand the whole time...We might not do 100% Thailand, but perhaps more like "60-40" (in favor of Thailand)...because as you say: you never "really" retire...I managed to jump "corporate" a long time ago and run my own shop, but, still - hopefully it's just one or a couple of years more, and we'll "JUMP". Before it's too late... :-) There is actually research suggesting that time passing as perceived by someone in their mid 50's moves about 17 times faster than it does for a kid. It kind of speeds up, like that final swirl down the drain when you empty your bath tub... So, better not wait for that swirl - or one might find that the jump happened too late, and be missing out... This (European) winter, it will only be a quick visit, but we HAVE to catch up some time when we stay longer - i just feel that we would have so much to talk about (not the least egg laying chickens!)! We're not far away from Buri Ram... All the best, and congratulations on your life choices!
Thank you, the temptation is never really the corporate or city life, but i want to be 100% sure my boys have opportunities when the time comes, so far so good but you know as a father we want the best for our kids even if it means sacrificing our own dreams, at the moment we are having our cake and eating it, all the best with your mission!
@@thenakedguru Thanks! Yes - of course, when you have kids - THEY become your dream!
Myself working in the uk for a German multinational was slowly eating me alive. Some important people we lost at a certain age, so one I thought " s£&t ! I've only got 2 years left" lol. now I can breathe ! Oh sort of living in bkk 🙏

I’m fit and healthy , touch wood so far , I’m not a millionaire , far from it , 😅 but I get a bank pension & have savings locked away ..
I'm probably telling you something you already know, but this is just a cautionary warning: with the sick birds, practice really good hygiene when working with them. Bird flu is a real thing, and bird to human transmission happens easily. Protect the family. Good luck!
100k I would move to Thailand literally now 😂😂😂 ..
Hoped to retire there at 50, lost everything. Now 58 and in the uk, love my job so not so bad. When my son finishes university in Bangkok hopefully he'll get a job and i can do 6 months UK, 6 months Thailand until my pension kicks in at 67.
Sorry to hear that but sounds like you have a plan that could work very well
In a weird way things worked out alright in ways other than money. I have a great family.
To do business in Thailand, have some smarts, some money, and LEARN THE LANGUAGE
Bingo!
😊❤❤❤xxxx
IM a paint and decorater back here in the UK, Im not financially secure, have about 100k in savings, could I find work there working for expats,?
Hi Ryan another very well put together video and one that im sure will help alot of people who maybe feel stuck 👍🙌
Ps Is there any chance you could share either the recruitment agency you use or someone else that could help, I'm really looking for a job in hospitality work in Thailand, I have a customer service and sales background and just looking for any opportunity to get into the industry in Thailand...
Many thanks 🙏
Stephen
Hi Stephen, many offers I get come direct form the hotels, linked-in and hosco :) glad you enjoyed the video
Best investman you can do in Thailand is to buy land.
I am thai living in Germany. I want to move back to my thailand but my man worried about healthy insurance and visa.
If you are Thai, why do you have to worry about a visa?
@@kevinp8108 her husband is worried, not her. 'My man worried about healthy insurance and visa.'
Not taking risk is the biggest risk in life. 😂😊
Serious question. Would AUD$300k get me a comfortable life in Thailand? Not quite ready to retire, as I work in the tech industry and always want to be a part of it, but AUD$300k is my savings right now at 48 and want to move there for a no stress life. Thanks brother.
Would you continue to work also, online?
i think that about would buy you about 10 years
thats renting and not buying which is probably best
if you are continue to work and could make 30-60,000 baht a month, you could make the move
Yes, I would continue to work, no idea how to though remote from Thailand, I'm sure there are many employers who still employ remote workers. I'd need to do a bit of research.@@thenakedguru
I think work out the online work in whatever form you can do it, explore other options and your starter funds are enough, if you can make 30-50k baht a mont online you will do very well here and if you are a person that seeks opportunity other things will happen to open up income potential, dont leave it too late, even if you decide 6 months on and 6 months off at the start, cheers!
Do not mix chickens with turkeys. Histomoniasis/blackhead disease
yeah, I think the risk there is for the turkeys, they stay separate
You not been on father and son holiday for a while. Hugo must be old enough now for family holiday
We talked about it the other day actually, after family visit we are thinking koh chang
Bird Flu ?
Or snakes maybe
Silkies are very weak and fragile chickens. Also not the best layers
Spot on Ryan, best rule of thumb I live by is it is going to cost you 300,000 baht a year as a single person living a simple life in rural Thailand, that focuses you on how long to expect to be able to live here and to cut out the unnecessary fat to maximize your time
I agree!
Is that enough? 300k Baht? What do you consider a ‘simple life’? I’m really trying to crunch some numbers here because my fear is that the longer that I stay in the west the Government will tax me poor and the Oligopolies will gouge me to death.
@@Lifegoal2030 Honest answer is that depends on you, your lifestyle, expectations and how adaptable you are, the only real way for you to find out is to give it a go for 6 months to a year first before making that final decision. My yearly living budget is comfortable and based on a single person already established here for many years, if part of your expectations is to find a long-term Thai partner, obviously the costs will increase depending on that person (and family) needs. Best advice is to take a trail run, always rent, be honest, don't make rash commitments and keep your financial situation to yourself.
I would advise people to wait until they are rich. People that were raised in poverty know what its like to have nothing and its better to have nothing in your homeland than to have nothing in a foreign country.
I think a lot of people don't have the luck like you if they are doing the same so early without a lot of money. It is irresponsible to recommend your rare life style plan to others. Because it's so rare, your TH-cam channel is so successful. Don't tell it's easy. Don't tell others to do it the same. You were very lucky! You can bring others to ruin ther live.
I’ve only done TH-cam for 3 of the 15 years here, I came with no money- many people can make it if they have the balls and half a brain 👍
You seem like the sort of person who will always make excuses why they can't do anything.
@PeterFreitag I'm guessing that you've only watched this video on Ryan and Damo's channels. If my guess is correct, maybe you should do what I did - go back at least a year (I started watching their vlogs @thenakedguru and @lifeinruralthailand close to 3 weeks ago and started with vlogs about 18 months old). Get a better picture of who this beautiful couple really are and where they've come from to reach the point they're now at.
@@thenakedgurugood response Ryan. I'm nearly at retirement age, have found a beautiful, kind and honest Thai woman who lives in the edge of a small village. You're right, it just takes some balls and half a brain. My parents moved from England to Australia when I was 13 years old, quite a big move for a couple with 6 children, including 3 month old twins and 'barely a few £'s in their pocket'. I'm planning a similarly big move, probably no better off financially than they were and all going well, it'll be a good move - I'm determined to make it so.
How can you be retired your to young! And whey to young to be retired because you haven't worked long enough to retire to save retirement money?
Im really discussing semi-retirement here and i feel i defined this in the talk
Some work all their life until they are rich, then move to Thailand to become poor again fast.
The heading of your video is so appropriate and accurate. Yes...Don't wait until your rich to move to Thailand because the girls will take your money away from you. So better to come here when you have nothing to lose.
That's if you go with the wrong type of girls.
Most people are dead with in 5 years of their retirement. That mindset kills you. Pretty much how it works is only poor people retire, it’s like the shiny object but it’s more like a flame!
Yes i feel like its a complete lie, but semi-retirement or a "doign you r own thing" approach is something less discussed
Why didn't you pick up the dog crap with a plastic bag? LOL 😂
ill start picking i up when the farmers pick up their ons and tons of buffalo and cow crap all over the roads 😂
That is just funny guess you have never been to Thailand
