  • An engagingly nervous Daryl Hannah giggles and fidgets her way through an interview with Terry Wogan at the time of the UK release of STEEL MAGNOLIAS (along with the writer Robert Harling); also talking about SPLASH and ROXANNE.
[Note: Some of Robert Harling edited out to keep it under 10 minutes for TH-cam]

She was stimming through this whole interview. Precious. She's a gem and people who talk crap about how she looks now vs then need to stop being so shallow. PS Yes, I'm autistic myself.

      How she looks now?
It's called aging and EVERY body has it happen to them sooner of later.
She is still as huggable today as she was yesterday, her warmth, kindness, and honest personality shine threw every time i see her interviewed.
She is a gem and I always wondered way some guy didn't wife her up years ago.
If i were 10 years older and I new her, i would have been working hard to wife her.

tartuffe8 B stimming is a repetitive behavior that most autistic people engage in to overcome anxiety. Just look at her hands.

No, I mean, you're clearly being well meaning, but as a person with aspergers, I can tell you that this is absolutely identical to how I behave when talking with people. The looking away, the fiddling with hands, the disjointed and stunted conversation. Finding it very different to comfortably elaborate on a question beyond the initial, constantly looking to the person with you to help.

Daryl is also missing a fingertip on her left hand from a childhood accident and seems self-conscious about it. If you look at photos she's very good at hiding it. She does it here too.

Her nervousness is part of her as she has aspergers syndrome, part of the high functioning autism spectrum. Nervous is an understatement, she's working very hard in her brain to behave and react as an NT (Neuro Typical), but it still always shows. She scared continuously someone will say something that will spark her brain to blurt out something inapprpriate. Aspies have a natural and strong tendency to speak their mind, literally and without social filters.

I see a reflection of myself in the way she acts in social situations, it's pretty exhausting and I feel like I have to act out a lot of times, which leaves me drained of all energy. When there's too much information thrown at me, it becomes irritating in trying memorize what the person talking to me has said, it's awkward.

I've never been formally diagnosed with aspergers, but from what I've gathered from articles and books that I've read, I have just about every symptom of it. I think my parents always knew (in fact, I think that I may have inherited it from my dad and my grandpa on his side) that I was different, but they didn't want to face it so they chose to stay in denial about it. Now I'm 28 almost 29 years old, and while I've learned to deal with some of the symptoms (poor social skills, inability to read emotions, lack of facial expressions, etc.) it's still a struggle at times. I applaud people like Daryl who are brave enough to come forward with something like this...aspergers has always been such a misunderstood illness/syndrome.

I am in the process of being diagnosed but, like many people commentating on here who have not been formally diagnosed, I relate to every symptom of the Asperger's syndrome diagnosis I read. I have had tests which indicate that I have traits relevant to autism, such as difficulty in differentiating words and vestibular problems. It has afflicted my life for too long and I am finally getting the support I need as an adult. I cannot express how much I admire people with the condition like Daryl Hannah who have overcome so much to fight so much for the causes they believe in and build an admirable career. She is inspirational!

I'm just learning she's autistic and watched Splash for the first time in many years - a movie I was obsessed with after watching it at 5 years old when it premiered and saw it hundreds, possibly thousands of times - with my daughter; I'm late diagnosed autistic and my daughter was diagnosed a couple years ago. I can see now why I identified with Madison so much & Daryl. Watching this interview, I'm in tears because we have the same stims, except at some point I started doing the arm rubbing behind my back.

You can really see her getting overloaded at the end the movements like rubbing her arm known as stimming getting more frantic the attempts to control it breaking down. Just watching a minute of this interview and you know exactly why Ron Howard cast her in Splash.

I can usually understand most social situations, but I typically mumble, and lengthy conversations are usually only on certain topics and interests, but I can be flexible but I get uninterested rapidly. One of my difficulties is my facial expressions, I do not always know how to respond when certain people give certain facial reactions, etc. I basically don't know all of them, so it can be awkward, to say the least.

She seems so nice. Much better than Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.Jackie was stupid to have told her son to not stay with Daryl. As if she had decent taste in men herself. Knowing how JFK Jr was still struggling with his own career, he actually was dating up when he was with Daryl Hannah. Then again, at least Daryl lived because she didn't end up in that plane crash with JFK Jr. Maybe Jackie did her a favour there. Still, Jackie was too controlling and jealous and in the end, she destroyed her son.
