Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and its normally full of shit. I think your takes are funny and entertaining even when you fire shots at my favorite artists. Keep up the good work.
People laugh when I say I be watching Finn Mckenty
Korn’s debut, SOAD’s albums are fantastic, Deftones are their own genre, Limp Bizkit isn’t actually Nü metal, it’s lame rap core. Nü metal isn’t rapping over guitar work, sorry. That’s not Nü metal or else Korn wouldn’t be considered Nü. I don’t know why the difference between industrial metal, Nü metal and rap core are so hard for people to grasp. Primer 55 is not Nü metal, and they’re certainly in the same genre as alum Bizkit. How is Death Kill Logic, Coal Chamber, Mudvayne, or early Korn in any way rap? This is why I gatekeeping exists, because people don’t understand why subgenres exist. And apparently people understand this generalization is the reason Nü metal has gone out of style, because Limp Bizkit and Slipknot were considered a genre that they weren’t a part of. Slipknot’s first album has turntables and they have a synthesized or whatever, okay but they’re more hardcore than anything.
This is like calling any metal with audible bass funk metal, just stop it, you’re being ridiculous
Hybrid theory is always #1 to me its the first album I ever had growing up. My brother's played it all the time and it's still my favorite album by Linkin Park (after which being meteora and minutes to midnight of course and all 3 are fantastic. ) That was an entertaining video and the worst to best albums of nu metal. Thanks to finn for sharing.
I’m convinced that Serj Tankian bullied you in highschool

He has one of the most unique voices in metal, and Finn's like "I dOn'T gEt It!"

I didn't even pay that much attention to them as a teen. As a young adult, I was like wthr they even on about? I think it was needles that drew me onto them at first. Not bc I'm a heroine junkie. I just tweaked it to wever I was going through, ha. Now I gotta go reminisce. Plus, they got elements of surprise & throw u off. And their sounds r bipolar & idky "I like to f myself up" in those vibes but I do. other than it just seems challenging bc I was a dancer... thinking ish like is this my image? Ppl really must think I can pull off anything damn random & just ha, ha? ok then. Early 20s I was just also trying to embrace my feminity, haha ha. They'd prob be like welp, that took a turn. Late 20s- now, still same. But it's like no 1 truly understands my history... They're like the closest thing. From my memory, Steal This Album! was supposed to be a "sequel" to Toxicity called Toxicity II. The songs on this record were essentially in demo sessions and recordings when it leaked to the masses. It kind of stunted the recording process, so they decided to clean up what they already had and push it out. It has a home in my heart as a good album but it is a very justified opinion to say it's bad.
No, they were leaked and called Toxicity II. That's why it's called "Steal This Album!"
Idk why, but I really really like Steal. It is... brighter than Toxicity? Idk, more lighthearted maybe. Has a handful of songs like Bubbles and Pictures, really upbeat and cheeky. But also intense emotional songs like Highway song and Streamline.
And I just realized that it has the most harmonised vocals with Serj still being the undisputed lead singer. So, because I absolutely love harmonised vocals but think that Serj is still clearly the more gripping lead singer (Daron is still good, too, but Serj is more magnetic), so Steal has the best of both worlds there. Toxicity's highpoints are more towering, though, objectively speaking, I gotta admit. The whole album has a more serious tone, though, while Steal feels just fresher to me, like a cool breeze on a clear spring day
Coal Chamber prob closest to sounding Kornish without being Korn.
Kind of interesting also that their demo was made back in late 1994, around the time Korn had already released their debut album. If it wasn't for a series of issues back then (mainly Dez Fafara's wife disagreements about the band), they would have had done their debut album at least by 1995-96, and probably being remembered much more as part of the beginning of nü metal.
Adema also
@@hre2stay no lol they came way later and is related to John Davis and tried to rip his vocals to point that’s what is sounded like . They had couple ok songs but that’s it.
Adema. Their song 'Close Friends' could literally be on any Korn album.
Just saw they play last week supporting Mudvayne, they blew Mudvayne out of the water, they were sick, I also forgot how many of their songs I knew
"Shut the F**K Up, Get Up!" by Korn of "Totality" is one of my all time favorite songs and is STILL the first song on my "weight lifting" playlist because it is just the best. Love it.
Imho, a thousand suns is the most solid non rock LP album. Its disjointed and jarring but many years after first listening to it, I ended up appreciating it so much more. The Catalyst is intense, Wretches & Kings and When They Come for Me go as hard as Meteora stuff, it just has a bit of everything
Absolutely!! The triple punch of Waiting for the end, Blackout and Wretches and kings alone already elevates this over Hunting Party imo, just incredible songs. And then there's The catalyst, what a banger. Other good songs on there, too. It kinda is its own thing, sounds like nothing else really
The album is very enjoyable but bcs its a concept art rock album it is really meant for invested fans, and most of the songs are not made to be hits, but to tell a story
Ive always felt that minutes to midnight is there best even tho its not a popular opinion, but thousand suns goes irresponsible hard and is definitely not talked about enough.
@@Zhwach999 yeah I'll have to agree MTM turned out to be my absolute favorite album, growing up. It's a really mature effort and full of memorable songs
Hybrid Theory and Meteora is peak Linkin Park, Minutes to Midnight was a solid effort, A Thousand Suns divided the fans, Living Things was a 50/50 album, The Hunting Party felt forced/ fan service (still good though), One More Light made Nickleback sound like Metallica
I liked Take a Look in the Mirror when it came out. There is a track with Nas on it also.
This may be the worst Loudwire list I've seen.
That's saying something.
Soad is like cilantro. I think you just have to be born with that particular gene to enjoy it. To me, soad just sounds like soap.
Yup. I liked "Sugar" but every other song sounds the same to me.
I personally think it's just an aquired taste. I didn't like them at first either, but over time they've become one of my favorite bands
So strange to me that Slipknot aren't considered to be in the "big four" or Nu-Metal.
I always thought that it was Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Korn and Linkin' Park
Slipknot Is more enduring, System of a down has larger songs
It's because Slipknot is more multi-genre than just Nu Metal
Slipknot was/is definitely more on the "metal" side rather than "nu-", thought so even back in '99.
I figured it would be linkin park, slipknot, korn, SOAD
I always thought Slipknot was categorised incorrectly with the 'nu-metal' label.
Korn Issues WAS fan art! That’s why it’s 8th grade level. I remember a contest on MTV. They put up several versions, I recall.
I find your lack of faith (in SoaD) disturbing.
I love Hybrid Theory but Korn’s debut came out 6 years earlier. The argument could be made there would be no Hybrid Theory without Korn’s debut
Mike from LP said that the most influential album that they used as a benchmark in the studio for their debut was actually The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused.
Sure but does that make it *better*? I think it makes it significant, but not better.
The cover art for Mezmerize and Hypnotize was done by Daron Malakians father. I thought of it being so deep when it came out - but I was in 9th grade at that time...
"Art is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone will have their own interpretation" E.A. Bucchianeri
Mezmerize art goes so hard
It was kinda cool when you bought both albums they slid into each other to make a larger album they were ment to be listened back to back as the last track on I think mezmerize rolls right into hypnotize
I don't see why he hates it so much
@@neolbioldey he's one of those people who gets triggered by music that calls out the brutality of nationalist types
As someone who actually likes both Black Metal and some nu-metal...
I am baffled Korn got some of their good albums ranked so badly. Who did this list needs to lay off whatever they were consuming.
Might be a bad take, but I've always considered Slipknot to be a part of the big 4 of nu metal rather than SOAD, as they blended elements of hip-hop/electronic and metal music way more than SOAD ever did. SOAD just came off as like ... maybe if Frank Zappa was less jammy and did metal
Agree, plus Slipknot is objectively more popular and successful
I generally would make the argument that Slipknot isn’t really nu metal either, but I would put them there WAY before SOAD. I’ve never understood why they are categorized that way, besides era and proximity, I guess? I don’t get it.
@@bottletoad1020Yeah thats why I was leaning more towards it being a bad take, as their first album was closest to nu-metal, but after that they really distanced themselves from it.
tell me you've never listened to SOAD without telling me.
seriously though, I think they're the most comparable to Slipknot, if I was going to swap one out it would be for Linkin park. To me, they've always just been hardcore rap, not Nu metal.
@@noahlenhard7010 to be fair I don't think Linkin Park really fits in either, except Hybrid Theory really was the blueprint for a lot of bands that followed in the genre. Same thing goes for Slipknot with their demo and first album.
But I wouldn't go as far as comparing Linkin Park to hardcore hip-hop ... if we're speaking of at the time and not what it would later become like Run The Jewels, Linkin Park sounds nothing like Beastie Boys, DMX, or Onyx. Chester's clean singing brings it a lot closer to nu-metal which shared a lot of those choruses vs. Hardcore Hip-Hop that usually relied on spoken word choruses, sampled choruses, or features for choruses.
Commenting only 3 minutes in: I think it would have been hilarious if Finn had just continued to name Korn album after Korn album for the entire video while apologetically noting that they're a great band each time.
System of a Down is for us Prog metal elitists that want to look down on Nu-Metal, but can't due to the time signature and key changes of SOAD
Korn Serenity of Suffering was awesome. It also had Corey Taylor on it
I'm not familiar with most of SOAD's discography, so can't comment on them, but the template of 'the big 4', which is used to discuss thrash metal, or grunge, I don't think really applies to nu-metal.
For me, Limp Bizkit is the only band that retained the nu-metal formula for more than 2 or 3 albums before beginning to experiment, so it doesn't feel fair to rank albums by Korn or Linkin Park so low because they don't follow a nu-metal template. They may be terrible nu-metal albums, but are great albums nonetheless.
SOAD are the only one of these 4 that I can listen to.
I liked the first couple of Korn albums and saw them live a couple of times in those days, but soon bored of their sound.
LP I liked .... but heard them everywhere, so over-saturated. I should possibly give their later product a listen.
That other band I could never tolerate. Absolutely dreadful band .... with a cool guitar player.
Yaaayy more very-important-and-under-discussed nu-metal content
I think it’s hilarious this article considered living things and a thousand suns “nu metal”. LOL, it’s not even close, and Linkin Park made it a point to NOT make it nu metal. Also… I will fight whoever wrote this article, simply for the fact that they labeled “one more light” better than LT and ATS. Tf type of hardcore drugs was that person on?
They said ranking ALL the albums by the big 4
@@neolbioldey That explains why those albums were on that list but still they should have made it more clear. That confused me.
I resonate with the one commenter that said "They lost their AMV-ability". I guess referring to Linkin Park from their 3rd album onwards.
Having AMV-ability was a big fucking deal back then, who wouldn't want to make an epic AMV? Some of them were classic, a pity many got deleted
Seriously. I grew up watching so many AMVs and thats how i discovered all this music
@@coda1587 yeah and even if I never made one, I would listen to new songs wondering if they would fit into an epic one. If they didn't it was obviously dissapointing, so it affected how I approached music
personally i think steal this album is SOAD's worst album but by no means is it a bad album. The only reason it gets hate is because it's a bit more abstract than the rest of their albums. SOAD has no bad albums
Your analysis of depression was on the money. My partner deals with it currently and yeah that’s what she goes through. I’ve also been in that position as well…props to anybody who’s overcame it all.

*I literally got butt hurt looking at this list.*
I'm not angry with this list, I'm just disappointed.
Are we just going to pretend that Rage Against the Machine never existed?
Roots by Sepultura is the best nu-metal album, but being that it’s their only nu-metal album, I understand why it’s not on the list.
Steal this Album! By System isn’t just b-sides. They did start out as outtake demos from Toxicity BUT what song doesn’t start out the same way. SOAD worked them all out and made them into excellent full-fledged songs. “Bubbles”, “Streamline”, “Highway Song”…some of their best are on here, give a listen. 👍
You seriously think he will do that?
@@neolbioldey I meant that more for System fans who would rate said album low. If one doesn’t like SOAD, then obviously more of it probably wont change their minds. 🤷♂️
As much as I don't even enjoy Korn, it's only fair to argue that their self titled album should be nr1 for basically creating the genre. I'm just ridiculed how Slipknot's self titled didn't get here.
After an 8 year break, limp bizkit has released gold cobra and I think they have remained absolutely true to themselves,i celebrate the album
much better than still sucks
Idk what the sudden fetish is people have for the Deftones. This started about 5 minutes ago and they’ve been around for 30 years. Nobody cared when these albums came out, I know because I bought Around the Fur in 1999 and nobody gave a shit about them.
Yep
System Of A Down clearly has a punk influence. A lot of their less popular songs have pretty strong political messages. Plus across the board, the energy in their music seems to match a lot more with punk. Personally i love the more experimental sound of their song Mind.
Meanwhile one of SOAD's most popular songs:
WHY DON'T PRESIDENTS FIGHT THE WAR
WHY DO THEY ALWAYS SEND THE POOR
Rise Agaisnt has always been THE PUNK bank for me
Korn Issues cover art was all fan made. Had a contest on MTV about it. So you are right lol
I dont understand how mesmerize sounding like hypnotize is a criticism when thats exactly what they were going for but go off loudwire
It’s also a weird criticism since Mezmerize came before Hypnotize. It would make more sense to say that Hypnotize sounds like Mezmerize.
you ever just listen to a song and it’s so good you wish there was a song just like it but different that’s what system is
It's like they assume it's not a double album because they aren't in the same package. Heck, to fit the theme and the album names even more, the artwork on the CDs matches the inside artwork of the other one. So, if you were to put the disks into the matching case, you'd put it into the wrong one.
00:31 I feel like a lot of Deftones fans read Chino's infamous drunk comment from Summer Sanitarium 2003 and took it to heart
I think it's pretty clear Chino does not associate his band with nu metal and hated all his rap rock songs. Back to School was forced on them by the label at the time and they hate that song
Fuck the Deftones being nu metal or not, what about Slipknot?
went from nu-thrash to nu-alternative metal :P
Putting Serenity of Suffering so low is a crime against humanity

I think the reviewer was born after 1990 - I grew up on new metal, born in 86, so I was right there for Jnco's and all the horseshit. When Linkin Park dropped, I thought it was sellout bullshit. As I got older, my friends who were born after 90 or so swore that Linkin Park were the beginning of nu-metal and the jeans got tighter. I swear there's a difference of like 3-5 years that determine who you thought were the purveyors of the genre simply based on age.
Oh no; not Take A Look In The Mirror!
That was like my gateway into metal (I only really listened to punk mainly, along with a handful of classic metal bands, and then only really Sabbath, Maiden and Motörhead).
That album (along with, gradually, all the ones before it) was pretty much my soundtrack for like the whole of 2004, which was a pretty tough one for me. I brought (well, downloaded) that and the Greatest Hits album that came out that year, and really got into them.
Then I heard Slayer and the rest is history.
But yeah, definitely fond memories of that album.
I agree all the albums after that aren’t as good as the one before; there’s a definite drop in quality as regards songwriting after it in my opinion.

at least 4 Linkin Park records have no business being on a Nu metal ranking. I mean "Is A thousand suns or One more light the better Nu metal album?" is a ridiculous question.
I know I’m not looking at Toxicity on that thumbnail…
See You On The Other Side was terrible. The two singles were overrated. Serenity of Suffering was leaps and bounds better. It sounded like Korn again.
Agree with this take. I think most people here would love Serenity of Suffering if they actually listened to it
This is one of the worst lists Ive seen, like they made it so bad intentionally for clicks and outrage... The ranking of just the Korn albums without the other 3 bands is batshit crazy
Linkin Park is all the cool stuff from nu metal turned into the most bland and generic music in the entire genre
The way you feel about SOD is how I feel about Linkin Park. I never got the hype. It always seemed so boring and mediocre to me. With all due respect to Chester, I hate his vocals so much.
Doesn't help that everyone's been trying to copy Linkin Park for years
Back in the day there were many metalheads and even early nu metal fans that considered Linkin Park to be too commercial and overproduced, while calling Chester's vocals whiny and cheesy
@@neolbioldey I recall Threat Signal getting criticized by some metalheads in the mid 2000's cause the singing sounded like Chester, even though they were much heavier. I'd say Threat Signal were arguably the first band to combine Linkin Park choruses with Meshuggah riffs, well before it became cool and trendy to do so
Even when Linkin Park were cool they weren’t cool. It’s literally music for children.
@@phil8528 I wouldn’t call them children’s music but i would say it appealed to the same preteen demographic as emo/scene music, which was also hated by the previous generation of metalheads.
Even heavier more explicit bands like Slipknot and suicide silence were called children’s music cause they had some young fans
Three dollar bill yall is limp bizkits best album and pollution says it all
SOAD was certainly quirky and zany for the sake of it but quirkiness was much of nu metal's appeal at the time for many people. Like, SOAD was there for those of us who were first exposed to Korn through Twist
SOAD's quirkiness wasn't that much different from the quirkiness of Mike Patton's bands, or even Frank Zappa.
My top 5:
1: Issues by Korn
2: Meteora by Linkin Park
3: Slipknot by Slipknot
4: The Nothing by Korn
5: Significant Other by Limp Bizket
1. Meteora
2. Hybrid Theory
3. Vol 3 Subliminal Verses
Don't remember or haven't listened enough of the others to list them
More of a Singles listener
The Path of Totality is still one of my top 5 Korn albums. They could re-record the whole record on their own without the dubstep artists and almost every song would still hold up. Get Up is one of the most Korn sounding songs they've ever done.
Take a look in the mirror does not deserve to be that low… Korn’s heaviest album imo
Zero Mezmerize slander will be tolerated
Lol. I think the songs were mostly good, but it marked the beginning of the Serj ultra-nasal voice era. Definitely loses points for that.
Steal This Album! may just be leftovers, but it was claimed that the songs just didn't fit with the continuity of the album, and the songs are just as good
Had no idea Korn had that many albums
Why go through this list if you aren't familiar with half the albums. Waste of time.
serenity of suffering is seriously some of korns best stuff up there with follow the leader and they do that to them
Well after this complete atrocity I was finally able to schedule my butt replacement surgery 6 weeks from now. This is the last one I'm qualified to get so hopefully it doesn't get hurt again.
Personally I like 3 Dollar Bill Y'all more than Significant Other but I can't deny the influence and significance of Significant Other. For me Limp Bizkit's top 3 albums are their first 3 in order of release.
That said, I'd put Korn's S/T and Life is Peachy above all of Limp Bizkit's albums
Korn self titled should be number 1, life is peachy should be at least top 10.
At last Finn understands the rectal trauma he has caused over the years!
Anyway, I have found that Korn is polarizing to people, once you get past Untouchables. A lot of people don't appreciate the experimentation, even though they were always experimental. Then, when they returned to their roots in most recent years, people say it is too samey and predictable. There really is no winning.
You say Metallica, i say five finger death punch
You say Sex pistols, i say Jonas brothers
You say Tupac, i say Tom Macdonald
Stop it, Get some help
🤦
You say The Beatles, i say Theory Of A Deadman
Hell yeah brother🦅🇲🇾🧨
Not the Old McDonald! 😂😂
What I like about SOAD is everything *but* the zaniness.
They are objectively fantastic musicians. The song structures, the rhythm section, production, mix, and gigaton weight of the riffs on songs like “prison song”, “toxicity”, or “BYOB” are undeniable. I don’t listen to them for their lyrics any more than I do limp bizkit. To me, they are another on of those bands of the late 90s-early 00s, along with limp bizkit, creed, and RHCP that to me qualify as “S tier band, f tier vocalist”.
If you ignore the whacky vocals, there are some great melodies and song structures with absolutely hall of fame worthy instrumentals.
I like to take what this guy says with a grain of salt
You must be a damn prophet
Bro legit had a premonition, like wtf 😂@@derpydino17
Requiem and see you on the other side is better than 90% of limp Bizkit albums.
I've always been surprised that Finn never understood SOAD. I've always seen them as the best that Nu Metal has to offer. I can find something to enjoy on most of their albums (except Steal this album, just B sides which i can understand why it isn't on this list). As much as I hate to pigeon toe them Linkin Park to me were always a 2 album wonder. They peaked in their start and were never able to top it. They went full Butt Rock and were unfortunately never able to bounce back. I never listened to much Korn, wasn't really for me. I don't hate Limp Bizket as much as I used to because those instrumentals were a lot better than I gave them credit for, but they are a gimmick behind Fred.
It's funny because Serj's voice is such a turn off for some people, which I don't understand
You can tell a lot about a person by how they rank their Nu Metal. This is not a guy you invite to your BBQ.
😂
I was more surprised that söipknot wasn’t there
thats because slipknot never had a bad album
@@hippywill they definitely did, maybe not in the early days but later on yeah
Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. should be no1 lol
@@raulfigueroa588 wasn’t that an unofficial album tho?
@@jaariboo6528 ya not the best but still not bad
Dude your depression's roots must partly be in your negativity - Three dollar bill y'all has a great cover and music too.
But anyway we love your critique that's why we here ✌🏼💜
Issues had 3 or 4 different covers from different submissions. pretty sure they were al "shown" in the liner notes.
I had one of the entries as a poster. It was fucking cool.
Imo, there is no Big 4 of Nu-Metal; its a big 6: Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Deftones and System of a Down.
I’ll vote for this man
Korny-def-system.of.a.limp-knot-down was my favorite 🤩
Mud-pool-chamber had bangers for days
1st Korn album is #1 for nu-metal picks. Anything else is wrong.
