- Made the video after some research on pigtails. Even reputable psu manufacturers use them. The reason is, they still follow spec and work just fine. I would even say they are even more in spec than the 12vhpwr connector.
I'm a gpu miner and I used these with 3070 ti cards pulling around 250-260w of power in total (around 230w through one cable and rest through riser) using one cable like this, I managed to melt the psu side ports of 2 power supplies one of which was asus rog strix top brand psu. so the cable might be fine but the connectors are dogshit and can't handle 230w of continuous power. after these burns I swapped to using 2 separate cables for one 3070ti not going above 150w per cable, and haven't had a problem in 3 years.
Hello friend. Do you have the link of the exact cable that is worked for you?. My card draws 250-300 watts and every cable I use ends up melting down.

I had to use 3 of these for my 7900xtx. It seems to work fine but I'm not a big fan of having extra connectors sticking out around my CPU cooler
I have just melted the power connector using this pigtail. I use a 7900 XT with 4 monitor setup. The cable or the connectors was not able to handle the heat. I'll never use a pigtail again in a GPU scenario.
I did the same with a 7900xt. Reason behind it is some 7900xt including mine are rated for 380w the connectors can’t handle more than 150w each which means they might be ok under normal circumstances but if you’re using the gpu constantly at a higher power then they might melt just like mine and yours did
i been using pigtails on my cards for the last 5 years no stress running just fine on my 6800 xfx

C just don't use them stay safe they have a stigma for a reason they just are not as good as the single 8 pins a rating of power is not a hard confirmation of what they can handle the 16 pin is a testament to this since they literally melt if they are even slightly loose and they are rated for 600 watts on a 450 watt card.
so the conclusion is, as long as your graphics card doesn't hit 375 watts mark on full load, it wil be least fine with a little undervolt
375 is absurdly too much. i wouldnt go over 50w of the max 150. especially if you are using them with nvidias 12 pin adapters. pulling 375w from a single cable is just asking for it to melt.
I have a corsair cv650 can I pigtail rtx 4070 ti super which tdp is 285w my other components are completely lower powered so don't worry about that? What's the maximum my single 18awg 8 pin 2×(6+2) pcie cable can handle some say 150w and some 288w? I will also get 75w from pcie slot?@@zexal4974

Can i use the pig tail part of the pcie cable instead of the main cable? It seems ghat my case oannel wont close because the cable cannot bend to wear i can fit it in the case.

Question: 7900 XTX. I've currently got it plugged up to 2 8 pin PSU spots and it's got 3 8 pin ports on the GPU. I'm using a pigtail to handle that. TDP is 375 watts, which is fine. However when I started overclocking it'll go above 400 watts. Typically I would have said in the past no - 150 watts per 8 pin + 75 watts from PCI-E so 375 is the top. However, it appears it'll be fine according to this video? I'll still be well within Molex spec I believe.
bro just get one more whole 8 pin cord by itself i wouldn’t risk it on a 7900 pigtailing is still scary for high end gpus

I’d recommend getting the 3rd cable I melted a cable and bricked the power supply by pigtailing a 7900xt so would definitely recommend to be safer than sorry. In saying that the cable lasted 6 months until it melted but don’t risk it

@@ImaITman good to hear brother I’m lucky my card is covered by 2 year warranty which will cover the damages and I’ll be getting a upgrade to the sapphire 7900xtx for only 50 euro extra. If it wasn’t for the warranty I’d be stuck with a dead psu and a gpu with damaged pins that might be unstable
I been using then even on a 4070 ti super and would even trust it on a 4080 super. This is such bull the stuff going around all because of old issues where someone had a bad psu and then this rumor started.
I just installed a 4090 less than a week ago. I was planning on upgrading my power supply only because I only have two dedicated connectors with pigtails. After researching the specs I decided to go ahead and run it. And I have had no issues. Plus I only play VR games and the 4090 so far hits 350 watts max on everything I have tried and less than 300 most of the time. I know it would spike a lot higher running ray traced benchmarks and the big ray traced flat games. I'm not worried at all about running pigtails for a while with the low power load I am seeing in VR. Personally I'd be good with 500 watts. Above that I might want to upgrade.
2 dedicated connectors would be really tight because of the power use from the 4090. If it only hits 350 its fine, but these gpu's will have short hard spikes. The reason it's not as great for the 4090 is because you have 3 layers of connectors instead of 2. the gpu, adapter and psu. Getting a custom cable for a psu would already be a big help.

So I was advised to buy asus tuf 7900xt oc gaming wwhich has 3 pcies lanes with a be quiet pure power 12m 850w. But is has only 2 12v rails with 2 pcie lanes pigtailed. Is that even a good combo then? Do I need to be worries for failing hardware or fire? Im scared as hell to plug it in. Should get a psu with 3 pcie lanes?

I have a corsair cv 650w psu and was planning to buy a rx 6750xt that has 1 8pin and 1 6pin. Can this psu handle rx 6750xt (tdp of 250w) in a pigtails or is it one of the psu that can't handle transients from the modern gpus? I just bought this psu recently and now that I'm planning to upgrade my gpu, I just noticed now that it only had one pcie cable on it.

pigtailing should be fine, (not a good option, but a bit fine), i also have one, the only causes it will burn it because the wattage overladed the cable, if your GPU had to 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin, the maximum load should be 300W (include the wattage from yout PCIE slot on motherboard carried max power of 75 watt) so it'll be 150 + 75 + 75 watts in total, if you wanna go safer i suggest undervolting, it might hurt, but at least it will reduce the chances of power spike
as long as your GPU TDP still around 50 watt below the maximum power of the system can provide, it should be good.
you are asking 2 questions:
Can I safely connect the 6750xt using 1 cable with pigtails?
Can my PSU handle transients?
PCIe 8-pin connectors can supply 150 W (th-cam.com/video/FfoT3qLH3rY/w-d-xo.html and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#6-_and_8-pin_power_connectors), the motherboard provides an additional 75 W through the PCIe slot, so together that's 225 W. Since your PSU has only 1 PCIe cable, you're 25 W short.
However, the problem is not power (watt) but heat. If airflow around the connectors is sufficient, you may not have a problem.
As for the transients: I think you will be fine. Say a transient occurs during a few microseconds and asks the PSU for double the TDP, i.e. 500 W. The other components want some power too, for instance 100 W (depending on what and how many components you have). Together that's 600 W and you'll still have 50 W headroom.
To be honest, if I were you, I would upgrade the PSU to 1 with 2 (or more) dedicated PCIe cables to prevent using a pigtailed configuration. Usually that means the PSU has more power too which gets you on the safe side concerning transients.

Being running my OC's 1080ti with a pigtail cable for 7 years and the card can do over 310 watt under heavy load. Nothing wrong with it (PSU is a CM850V I thought), just bough a 4070 super to replace it on monday will run it the same way in the adapter.

So I’ve ordered the nzxt c850 (2022) to go with my sapphire nitro + 7900xtx. The issue I’m facing is that the psu comes only with 3 pigtail connectors. So if I were to just ziptie the “pigtail” and use the main one. Would I be fine? I might plan on using cable extensions just in case (for aesthetics) and worse case (I don’t wanna do it bc it’s expensive) is cablemod replacement psu pcie cables. Any insight on this?

@@jeanbannon so I did do that, I used three different pigtails and just zip tied the extra pigtail on each one. I went with the Asiahorse gold plated extension kit and used them from the pcie cables!! 4 months in and no issues whatsoever!!

Same here i have c850 i actually got extensions for mine so the ugly ass pig tails are in the back of the case. But yeah only use one of the connections and zip tie the pig tail.
I can also concur months later if works fine but isn't all that aesthetically pleasing.

So I just got an RX 6700 XT on Google it says the max watts can draw is 230w. Now I got a single pig tail style cable with 6+2 pins on both ends since the motherboard gives 75watts that means that the cable needs to give me 155w when the gpu is under full load. So my conclusion is that I'm safe to simply use that one pigtail cable c

@matiasluna8235 well i did alot of research 7 months ago and apparently these cables can handle ALOT more than 150 its just a safety companies slap on their cables,ive been using what i described on the comment and under full load on forza horizon5 and it has been working fine. Yes, and it's the best, providing 300W of power to the GPU. But since it's an rx 5700xt, I think just one would be enough, depending on the model.
I had my 7900xt pigtailed and the cable was touching the plastic Window of My old cooler Master q300l and the cable run so hot that melts the Window, so i end the situation just adding the other cable

If you have the extra cables. Use them!
It all matters if its muli railed or single railed. If its a single rail essentially the both of the tails are dc which means its split YES but its going into one current. Now if its multi railed you will have to be careful because it can overcharge one or the other tail and cause bsod/restarts and worst case scenario it can fry your pcie port directly on the pcie connectors and the pcie slot of the card. This when knowing and benchmarking your card to see if it spikes above 225W. Most psu's that are worth a damn are single railed anyways. Another reason to only go for certified gold only psu's, i.e quality psu's. Like EVGA, Corsair, Be quite, and seasonic.

No you can't due to why the 2 extra pins are there. They are 2 ground pins for added stability for the cable. Hence why it's an 8 pin connector.

No, they really aren't. That's why all of the major GPU and motherboard manufacturers recommend not doing this.

That's what I've been wanting to know lately. From what I've researched, the 4070 Super FE's total power draw is 220 watts maximum.
So if I'm understanding correctly, then using 1 pcie daisy chained to gpu should be fine. Don't take my word for it though. Do some research and do what you are comfortable doing and or knows to work.
It's also kinda weird nobody has put a video together showing exactly what kind of cable and how they are connecting gpu to psu regarding the 4070 super fe.

Please don't you have no idea how the circuit is making contact since it's melted. It could cause a short.

No, it won't but it can contribute to heat building up.
Heat is generated at the weakest link, i.e. at the point where electrical resistance is the highest. This would be the connectors itself which are positioned at the side of the board. Whether this heat reaches the back of your board depends on the airflow in the case.
The GPU chip and the MOSFETS generate much more heat than the connectors so the connectors don't play an important role in heat at the backside of the board. This video is all about preventing melting of the plastic isolation of the connectors and the wires close to the connector.
