I would love for someone to play really, really, old versions of Rimworld. Like back when the fear mechanic was still in the game. People think it's hardcore now, but they know nothing :P
IIRC they're available on the Ludeon studios website.

If you can call it a colony, I just got the game and started on the hardest difficulty with naked brutality and Robbie Random set to "Losing is fun". Started out with a one-armed cannibal who is a great shot but not great at much else. I got a somewhat sizable base set up in the boreal forest before he starved to death. I could not get him to pick berries for the life of me. He did, however, snap out of a daze once to rush half way across the map and eat a dead raccoon, then go immediately back into a daze.

First colony, now that is a story. It involved slaughtering boomalopes in a wooden barn, meteors hitting my chemfuel next to my barracks while half of my pawns were down with the plague and every pawn trying to do everything and going nowhere. It was mercifully ended by a man-hunting Thrumbo herd, 3 rocket raiders and and infestation all at once. Then I started looking at guides.

Sweet mercyful Randy who did you decide to use as the teller? Well if it's that chaotic it had to be Randy. Oh and my first was basicly blitz's rimworld experince as I did a cannibal colony. It lived. Never saw it die but than I learned about dev mode and my next dozen have cheated till I got into high about of mods. Than I just never finish it. Oh and currently I have only cheated so my colony don't get fucked by stupidity round of events that happen to be rim of horrors mod. (I HAD A FUCKIN STAR SPAWN NEARLY KILL one of my colonests. Oh and they frail things. As avali, but I do have by now a 80or so teifling and a kobold, (who has one the favor of my personal colonist who is my starbound main character I play with, or on eof them any way) so ya coloney is rocket as of now but living in their frozen waste just fine.

In my last colony (it died 1 hour ago) I actually had a strange event which is probably a part of the alpha animals thing. A person joined my ranks randomly, did work though not much, and ate a shit ton. It was kinda strange but I let it pass. Suddenly, right after I had cleared a large infestation, that person suddenly "died". It turned out that it was a insectoid called a Mime that took the form of a colonist to eat my food, though since the game suddenly thought I was out of food for some reason, it dropped the facade and went on the attack. It's kind of a strange event but one to keep in mind.

    - the importance of Art. (cuz i know you're a man of culture)

"NOT DIGGIN TO DEEP INTO A MOUNTAIN"
      Whoops...
My first one was this. Starting with the 3 pawns picked a rocky terrain with a lot of minerals and other stuff but i was forgot about the necessity of food and wood as a needing material for starters.
i was well preped from videos at least that was i tought. And off course because i started the game with vanilla expanded give or take a 100+ mods
Around 60 hours of sweat and blood & swear to gods and devils, i was fine. No more manhunting packs of predatory animals, no lightning strikes directly hitting pawns, and finnaly: no more mentalbreaks. after 60 hours i had a chance to start my mining operations and carve my empire large business from the mountain. And what my story teller cannot done i made it my self: 3 out of my 5 pawns ended up a pancake under the moutain tiles including my doctors and yes... rest of the two was non capable of violence... and a very next day i got raid again... and that was a moment when i gave up...

Pro tip! If you see a wild man and want to recruit them but you have no one with the skills for taming animals all you have to do is beat the crap out of them. Then when there down rescue them. For some odd reason they think highly of you saving them after you brutally beat them that they will either A.) Decide not to join and leave Or B.) Join because you were so Kind on saving there life from the danger that is yourself. Well we don't like answer (A) so we gonna keep beating them and rescuing them until they realize we are good people and eventually they actually will join. Be sure to use a club or wood because apparently your colonist will bite them and cause a infection in there torso and you have to waste medicine saving someone that is going to be making your colony more artistic. My longest attempt was 3 recuse missions, He may be a trauma savant now but damn the base started looking pretty.
Side note you cant reduce there resistance if there a prisoner because they are treated like animals. You can however throw them in a cell and wait for the slavers to come by to make some extra profit.

Some extra tips: the button to stop the home area to be set by the game is on the right side on the bottom of the screen (looks like an home) there is also another very useful one (looks like an hammer) that makes it so whenever something is destroyed ib the home area a blueprint is put in it's place so that your builder will rebuild it.
You can also youse the room stats one to se what is important for a room as some stats are bright white and some grey, the white ones are important, the grey ones not.

One tip that I pain-stakingly found out as my crops grew in. Be careful when clicking on your crop plots, because you can select all of them at the same time. I didn't have any animals to help with fabric, and being new to the game thought, "cotton works" Now I have a lot of cotton and am struggling on food. Otherwise, my colonists seem to love chopping down trees, to the point of forgetting to be jailers so I ended up with less mouths to feed as a positive...

Important raider tip. Always check to make sure the raiders don't have the Raid Aging Disease. If you capture such a raider you will have to execute them, as you will most likely never be able to heal them fast enough to outpace the aging. They do make very good skill dummies for your doctors and wardens though.

Now we're all starving , slowly going insane, as lighting is coming down from the heavens setting the jungle a blaze and I've only played for like 3 hours. This is fun.

Started two days ago and have been playing at work while I have free time. It's been maybe half a year in the game.
2 of my colonists died. My dog died. A man in black came, immediately got injured, and my lone colonist nursed him back to health. He's been a beast the whole time and the only reason I picked him is because the game named him Fartier. Fartier the Farmer.
So now it's just Fartier and Anarchist (the man in black), and a wild woman they imprisoned for stealing food. Except now they feed her and probably waste more now.
I've tried to save two people on the edge of my map that crash landed and both died in Fartier's arms as he rushed back to the base. Sad.

As for my first colony... Well, I took the new solo mechanitor start. To give you an idea of my experience at the time, I had finished the colony and done nothing else. To make a long story short, my colonist got attacked by a rat. The wound got infected because I didn't know that I had to enable self-tend, then she died from her infection.

I know that this tutorial is pretty old now, but i can give some of my tips. First thing you do after starting the game, is making the schedule, my standard schedule is sleeping from 22 to 5, 3 hours of recreation after they wake up, and after the work, 2 hours of recreation. Always have a guy that only cook, otherwise you'll have huge problem with food. So if we had the setup behind us, we can talk about late game. First thing you want to do after making formalities is selecting some trees to chop, and placing down a campfire, butcher spot and a crafting spot, so your cook could feed your pawns, and crafting spot, if you are chad like me, and spawn wihout nothing. After you've set up some campfire, you should hunt some animals or harvest berries, so your cook could use his new kitchen, dont forget about storage space near your kitchen. After your food supplies will grow, build your first building, and make interior at least 5 blocks wide, so you could build hi-tech research table here after some time, but for now, you should have fun with normal research table. So after you placed your research table, prioritize researching cooling systems, so you could make a freezer, and then the fabrication, so you could make components, cause they are rare as damn if you use them all. After it all, i just do my own buisiness with mods, i build some houses, farms or factories, but late game, peace.

First colony was a dunk in the dark and started with naked brutality and a 10yo child. Was able to erect a shelter in a small 2*3 space in the edge of a rock formation. First raid came up, bonked me (my pawn had the wimp trait) , and kidnapped me. End colony attempt. 😅
Proceeded to retry with the same pawn and instead waited out till the raider gave up bashing walls in. From there on it was harvesting berries, carving out the mountainside, and forming the base day by day till I got another child dropping from the sky (an yttakin). While children have penalties they are still very capable at running a small colony. Also, having an yttakin with animal warcry early game feels very OP. Can be used to defend yourself or back off a hungry predator about to turn your pawn into second breakfast.
OH, fun fact, apparently using the default custom storyteller settings is identical to strive to survive. My first runs used these settings with the only change being to change child growth rate to 100%. It was an adventure to say the least.

Then a Man in Black showed up to save my colony but he was downed by the boomrats, too. I then watched my pawns die one by one as I could do nothing.

  • @gekkobear2
    @gekkobear2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

"common sense" mod IMO is crucial.
Pawns should be smart enough to clean before doing doctoring/cooking/sleeping or doing a job where cleanliness matters.
And then cooking (in a small floored room) is workable but not required.
Tribal start in particular; manage your "wealth". Give crap away if it's rising too high. Seriously, I just hand out loot I got like I'm Santa at Christmas sometimes.
Low wealth is better than a mechanoid raid on your tribals armed with clubs and bows sitting on a huge stockpile of gold and silver.
You can get gold later when you can defend it; you can't get a colony later when mechanoids have turned the area into an inferno of pain.
Last thought... your base is nice; but really not the end-all be-all. Don't die for it.
Bugging out with whatever you can carry lets your colony survive and restart elsewhere with whatever you can grab.
Skilled colonists with some good stuff make for a better "re-start" than a new game.
When your 4 guys see 20 mechanoids incoming, and your turrets/killroom isn't up to snuff? You got your wealth way too high.
Grab what you can, call it a learning experience, and run like fun.

    • @gekkobear2
      @gekkobear2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Add some Slightly advanced tips for the ones wanting a bit more info? Sounds like fun. Lets do some less known ones.
      1) Smooth walls are very nice. You can repair them. You can build power cables in them, and they're (mostly) more durable too.
Using them where possible on your outer walls makes a lot of sense even if you can't build them yourself.
granite has 900 for a smooth wall, or 520 for a built wall. Which do you think lasts longer when you're repairing it to stall a sapper? ;)
      Limestone smooth-700 built-465
      Slate smooth-500 built-390
      Marble smooth-450 built-360
Smooth sandstone (weakest stone) has 400 durability. sandstone brick wall has 420. Okay, sandstone stinks. Bummer.
      2) Dirt doesn't need cleaned, but isn't that dirty. Dirt floors everywhere avoid you tracking in dirt.
Stone floors (natural, not built) don't pick up dirt aside from vomit and blood. And don't have a serious "dirty" modifier for researching or cooking.
If you have a handy mountain with stone ground nearby? Set your cook up there. Just keep you butcher table outside/away some to avoid blood.
But it's not pretty? Get a small statue for that; and you still avoid a massive cleaning job.
      3) The Anima tree (for tribals and those who capture tribals).
It says don't build on/near it and tries to warn you building anywhere near it... And it is lying to you to make you suffer needlessly. I think Randy wrote that part.
The tree is for 2 things, in order of importance (IMO).
      1) Grow grass to get to 20 to gain psycaster levels. This is unaffected by building near the tree.
Yep, no change. Surrounding it with walls or leaving it in a pristine grove gets you the exact same Anima Grass grow speed when a natural focus guy meditates there.
      2) Meditation psyfocus to gain psy-power. This is affected; but it's not terrible. You have a base 50%/day (≈2%/hour). It can give you another 30%, getting to 80%/day (≈3%/hour).
Lets say you schedule 3 hours to meditate?
Oooh, you get 9%, not 6%? But it's half the map away and you spend an hour walking there and back in those 3 hours... so you lost all of your gain.
But at least you're outside the walls where the manhunting warg pack will eat you; and your grass is far enough away that Randy's dry thunderstorm will burn the grass away (the tree doesn't burn, but the grass surely does, trust me, Randy hates me having Anima grass).
So build it inside; just leave 20+ dirt/gravel areas for the grass to grow (and clear other trees if needed, anima grass will replace grass, but not trees).
      4) Psyfocus shuffling (generally for tribals).
Your lone recruited tribal wizzzard is doing well, but has to meditate a ton as he keeps burning psy-mana like a crazy man?
Wish you had that 30%, even halfway across the map? No. Don't say such heresy. Don't even think that.
Are you a cannibal/psychopath/bloodlust/masochist/undergrounder? Then you're in luck. (ascetic, slightly less so)
Build 5 Sarcofa... Sarcophi... coffins near your meditation spot by the tree. Fill them with people (whoever you've got).
If you can get a relative of your wazzard in one. (wall for an ascetic).
Because you use your best psyfocus. 0% tree or 28% coffin pile (38% if you were related)? Coffin is better. (22% for an Ascetic with a wall).
AND if you're in range of the tree? Then you still grow grass for your next captured tribal to gain more wizzzird powers. Yes, really. That's what I do, every time.
      5) Do NOT get a tribal wizard a royal title. Just don't.
Titles give me psypower? Only if you have a LOWER level than the title. If you have a level 3+ tribal psycaster, and grind him up to be a knight? He needs a fancy bedroom and a throne room and you get NO PSYPOWERS. You already had level 3, so they skip you.
And now you have a throne room, so you spend your meditation time on your throne. Away from your tree, and you have to block your guy out of his throne room entirely to avoid that.
      6) If you want a Royal for psypowers and especially the permits to call in troopers and airstrikes?
Okay, Get an Ascetic one. They want a crappy room and terrible clothes. They won't complain about either.
You only even need a throne room when you want to do a title ceremony; and then you can let the braziers burn out; it's not important to him.
Count Gekkobear in his crappy dirt closet with his tribalwear and no throne room? +5 for a crappy bedrooom, 0 for no throne or no braziers, 0 for clothes, 0 for not a count bedroom.
Vagabond Kings are the best kings... apparently. Who knew?

6:36 that was my problem early on. I still survived with only one pawn who could fight though

my tip is don't pick pawns with poor world outlooks. I took a depressive and a pessimist as 2 of my 3 bc they were skilled and... well they were constantly at minor break risk until about mid game.
Also, thrumbos... Hmmm.... yeah well i had 8 pawns and decent weapons. I thought i stood a chance and basically got destroyed by them. Uncool!

I watch so much rimworld content but I don’t know how to play myself. I’ve barely survived a couple years and never get to the end game or even mid game state. Thanks for doing a guide though, as having to restart this many times gets a bit old.

You have to fail to win and Invest to start producing, the more you learn and fail, the less often it will happen in the future

I just learned that you can click-drag to assign meal and drug types to the entire list, instead of choosing each one twenty four times to go back and forth.
It works for slaughtering animals too!

my first colony, Randy bless his soul, decided that we needed a plague.
Followed by a raid. Where i lost 2 pawns, and 2 pawns were down due to the plague.
man in black came, colony stabilized.
    Randy gifted me chickens.
    SO. MANY. CHICKENS
    Also MIB also catches plague
chicken population started out around 8 or so. This soon exlpoded to over 30. I did not know what to do, nor did i have the food to feed them.
the chicks would hatch, starve then die, as i had no hay grass, kibble or even normal foods like rice to feed them, as my colonists were in bed due to the plague. I couldnt grow more food, and they ate what food was there. Shady Creek was lost, barely 3 years in
As a Dwarf Fortress enjoyer, i felt right at home

Another random tip. Take full advantage of your starting area. Full time growing period? Farm till you drop "don't survive of hunting only for like three years"

I didnt knew what to do with the first raider so when i beat him i accidentally ordered one of my pawns to shoot him to dead while in the floor and then i left him there like a week, they didnt like to see a corpse too much

So i saw a couple thrumbos in my first colony and thought that itd be cool if i could tame them. It wouldn't let me tame them so i decided i would settle for killing them and getting whatever i could out of them. I sent all 3 of my people at it with the starting guns / knife and all of my colonists proceeded to get absolutely destroyed. Knowing not to fuck with a thrumbo wouldve been nice. I'm glad i watched this video

4:00 My 2nd game ever was going pretty well,
until a cluster of robots with a mortar landed next to my base and a two week fallout began raining down over the land, killing every food source and making it impossible to survive a trip to snipe down the mortar.
Edit: I laughed as I watched it all burn, as people descended into violent madness due to starvation.
