This song saved me and my sister. When my abusive father was on the booze we would dance around our table to this song to distract us from what was coming when he got drunk. Thank you for this song, it got me through my childhood.
AHH so sad to hear that some alcoholics don't care about anyone there selfish and distructive most off them they don't even care about their selves no child should have to endure that I lived with an alcoholic when my son was two I'd to put him father out because I didn't want him to have to grow up seeing that aggression towards me ,,my grandad was aloholic but he was never agressive towards anybody he used to stand up and hold on to the table to dance when I read your message I remembered Him doing that he would off sang the one song in Irish for hours some old song about milking a goat lol he bought the pub out off crisps in Donegal think it was st Patrick's Day about 35 years ago he bought crisps all day for the children that were there most people that are alcoholic are agressive my my gramps as we called him he was a jolly drunk miss him so much he lived to 87 vand drank everyday how he lasted so long nobody knows ,,so sorry to hear you've been through so much your mum was probably afraid to leave him but at least you can still listen to the music and appreciate it god bless you and your sister
...and as the band came on the stage for the THIRD encore, Paddy said to the audience; "Sure yer gluttons for punishment" There is some fine music being played in the Heavens tonight.
Grew up listening to this music, the Wolfe Tones, Dubliners etc. Brought my fathers ashes home to Dublin and spread them, along with my mother’s on a beach near Howth where they had their first date. Took his urn around to a few of his favourite pubs first tho’, he’d have loved that☘️
im just curious beg my pardon, could you resist the temptation of throwing a sip of beer in the urn xD i think i would have done that with my fathers hahahaha

Unbelievable! I was just humming this to myself an hour ago and TH-cam offers it to me. Probably the first Chieftains tune that I ever heard when the great DJ John Peel played on his evening show, so in 1973 when the LP came out. I bought it straight away, to my parents great relief, as they were tired of heave metal. It reminds me that we have not got enough of Paddy Moloney's piping on record. Such a wonderful style. All I ever had was a couple of tunes on the compilation Claddagh "The Drones and Chanters", including a wonderful "Bumper Squire Jones". RIP Paddy. Thanks for the many wonderful musical moments. None better than this one.
Till this day I didn't know about Mr Paddy, may he rest in peace 😥. 15 years now since I first heard them, even bought a tin whistle living in Brazil, I don't know what to say, I'm just sad now
From a group so excelled in Irish culture and its heritage, I've studied them for years and listened longer than want to admit, even some of their shite stuff. This piece alone sums up best, the very best of what irish music is and what the chieftains personify
Wow that's what I call whistle players bodhran so simple but absolutely amazing a true Irish masterpiece from great Irish musicians Irish music dosnt got better than this for this is a complete masterpiece
I want so badly to go and spend much time there, in the emerald isle....being obsessed with it's culture and music, having adopted a brogue myself, and also in the process of learning Irish Gaelic. Éireann go brach!
Suena a Antiguo; sabe a la Tierra cuando era joven; huele al océano primigenio; nace de los primeros días del Sol en la Vía Láctea. No me canso de escucharla.

Brian Boru's family wrote the history after the fact. He wasnt killed while praying. In fact there were equal numbers of Norse and Irish on both sides of the battle. It was a dynastic power play rather than some nationalistic struggle between Gael and Norse.

RIP Paddy Maloney, thank you for all the inspiration.
This tune captures the essence of the Irish spirit!!!
Sounds like a medieval Kern swinging an axe into the face of a downed English cavalry man
The very first Chieftains track i ever heard, way back in the 80's. Still makes my heart skip a beat in 2021.
Rest in Peace Mr Paddy Moloney 😢

This how I imagine Brian Boru and his men preparing for battle against the Norseman.
